S. PATENT OFFICE COPY RIGHT 1913 BY THE BRADFORD PRESSED BRICK CO. BRADFORD PRESSED BRICK COMPANY "THE RED BRICK PEOPLE'*^*«^« Brick Construction Coming Into Its Own S TATISTICS show that the use of brick for buildings is rapidly increasing, and this is as it should be, for there are reasons very apparent upon investigation. Notwithstanding the great effort of other classes of con¬ struction to dispute the growing supremacy of brick—the truth is that its superiority when compared is so evident that no other conclusion can be justly reached. How inconsistent is the human who will employ every care and precaution known to protect his business property, money and valuables from fire and destruction, using brick and other materials, but will thoughtlessly expose those dearest to him in all the world—the family, to the slightest accident by placing them in a wooden house, and consequently a “fire-trap”. And concerning stone, this material while very adaptable to the construction of public buildings, foundations, monuments, etc., is not popular as a material for the building of homes, and largely for the reason that it presents a cold, repellent appearance, lacking warmth and cheerfulness, so much desired by persons in the home, and whether one builds for himself or for others he is governed by the popular feeling. Further, stone will not withstand fire, water and weather conditions as well as will brick, and is much more expensive in actual cost. As for concrete, which has a decided use in the construction of culverts, bridges, foundations, roads, etc., this occupies much the same position as does stone, when the subject becomes one of home building. This material is even worse, if anything, as regards appearance, as it does not enjoy that uneven surface, the oppor¬ tunity for the placing of mortar between the stones, and the change from that bare hard appearance of flat concrete surfaces. How decidedly ugly is the appearance of this material as against a beautiful, clean, well-set brick of rich Red? Then “Stucco,” so called, is nothing but a thin veneer of plaster on metal lath, and not in any sense a structural material—in fact the Building of “Stucco” is usually a wooden structure with a thin coating or exterior surface of plaster, lacking permanency, and is subject to practically all of the dangers and objections of the wooden construction. Whereas, Brick possesses positive structural, fire-resistance qualities, and hundreds of years of wear, as proven by many examples. “BRADFORD PRESSED BRICK” is probably the most beautiful Red Brick in America. It is made of choice Bradford Shale Rock, of a natural unfading Red; clean and bright, and by the very best and most modern machin¬ ery and latest improved kilns. While many other concerns manufacture Brick of several and often times many different colors and com¬ binations of colors, necessitated of course, by the character of clay employed, we are makers of Only One Color: RED The Standard color of the world in Brick. “Colors may come and colors may go but RED goes on forever,” and this RED, a natural, unfading, peculiarly beautiful, fresh, rich shade, is made only by the Bradford Pressed Brick Company. We have been manufacturing Brick for over twenty years and are conceded to be the foremost makers of Red Brick in this country. In the following pages will be found, not only illustrations of our product, but a few of thousands of buildings constructed of our famous Brick. They are used for all styles of houses, especially attractive laid with heavy bond joints for interior walls and columns; garden walls; fences, etc. Arches and special shapes are furnished and are also made from designs submitted. ‘‘BRADFORD RUFFS" A section of Wall with Dark Mortar •BRADFORD REDS Residence of Bishop Hoban Scranton, Pa.
