This is because of a Perfectly Watertight Lock. Because Metal Shingles necessarily Note This Lock-Joinl ! are fastened together by a lock, it is at this part where moisture is most likely to enter. It is the vital point in construction; therefore, is the po- tent factor which makes either a good or poor shingle. The Side-Lock is so formed that the matching beads are absolutely straight and true to size. The outer flange is pressed to such an angle that after it is inserted in the recess of the adjoining shingle the act of laying the shingle springs it into a perfectly tight contact at both the top and bottom with the beads positively nested. This construction provides amply for expansion and contraction of the metal. The nailing flange being covered by the inserted shingle, the nails are underneath ard not exposed. End Laps — T he bottom and top are so formed at all points of contact that when shingles are laid, no rain, snow, soot or foreign matter of any kind can enter. Embossing — The nature of embossing embodies features exclusively original and not obtainable in any other shingles. The crimps or narrow corrugations formed lengthwise of the plates produce the highest degrees of rigidity and strength, and prevent buckling of the plates, at the same time providing perfectly for the natural expansion and contraction of the metal. HANDY COMPANY, LYNCHBURG, VA. 21 "‘ Tir EiocK ^ Metal Shingle Trimmings Galvanized or Painted Tin RIDGE-COPING Both the Roll and Plain Ridge-Coping are suitable for use with either style “ A ” or B” Shingles. Made from one piece of metal folded as here shown. The shingles are inserted in the folds over the nailing flange, thus _ protecting the nail heads from the weather and roll ridge-coping producing a storm-proof covering. PLAIN RIDGE-COPING HIP-COVERING Made of one piece of metal, in the three styles here shown, and applied to make an absolutely storm-proof covering. This Hip- Covering is laid from the top downward, the lower end being pro- vided with projections or nailing flanges, over which the top end of the next piece below is inserted, thus con- cealing the nails. SECTION OF VALLEY VALLEY This Valley is so formed that the Shingles will lock over the folds, giving perfect protection against water washing up or under the shingles at sides of Valley. The folds allow amply for expansion and contraction. Two Folds are formed on each side, so as to give double protection against storms. The shingles must be locked over the larger fold nearest the center of Valley. The sections are so constructed as to slip easily on the roof. The flange insures the ventilation and drying of the metal in the Valley at all times. Made in two widths, 14 and 20 in. The smaller size is used for ordinary dwellings, while the 20-inch is more suitable for large structures where a considerable amount of water is to be carried down. The pattern will readily be gotten by the eye after one or two trials. Place sloping end of form in gutter about even with end. Start iron into grooves ; then reverse form and set up the iron into grooves on right angle end with a dull pean hammer. Don’t give up on the first trial as there is a little knack in doing the work neatly. Start all the grooves a little before setting them down, commencing with outside ones. Clamp the form in place on first trial — you will not need the clamp after a few trials. CO to 58 N. B. HANDY COMPANY, LYNCHBURG, YA. Niagara “Superior” Machines—Encased Superior Small Turner Superior Small Burr Superior Wiring Machine Superior Large Turner Superior Large Burr Superior Setting Down Machine The illustrations on this page represent the latest improved Tinners’ Bench Machines. They are made from new patterns and embody original features. The Crank Screw that raises and lowers the upper shaft is in such position that it will not interfere with the work. This screw moves the upper shaft twice as quickly as the crank screw of the ordinary machines. The Upper Pace will go over seams without causing strain or breakage. In addition to these new features, the Superior Machines possess all the desirable qualities of our old style Encased Machines, viz: Removable faces, interchangeable parts, adjustment for wear, brass boxes, etc. The “ Superior Setting Down Machine” is constructed on a new principle, possesses the advantage that the operator can start the seam inward while setting it down, thereby facilitating the operation of double seaming. The work can be held up or down. PRICE LIST INCLUDING STAND “Superior” Wiring Machine $14.00 J 11.50 l 11.25 . 12.00 f 10.50 Large Turning Machine, i ... , , .
