Third Quarterly Report The “Forward Movement” For Foreign Missions The Winter Months December, 1902, to March, 1903 . Special Subcommittee REV. H. F. WILLIAMS, Chairman W. G. ADAMS REV. W. S. JACOBS CHAS. A. ROWLAND, JR., Athens, Ga. Executive Committee of Foreign Missions Presbyterian Church in the United States Nashville, Tenn. THE FORWARD MOVEMENT. The third quarter of the Forward Movement has been full of encouragement, although the work has been somewhat obstructed by the continuous rains. Fifty-five churches have joined in the support of some definite object, either the salary of an individual mis¬ sionary, or shares in a specific station. These churches gave last year $5,871; they now promise $18,810, an increase of $12,939. During the past nine months 144 churches have entered the Fomard Movement promising in the ag¬ gregate $56,843 anually, a gain of $36,724 over the past year’s contribution. These churches give an average of $1.72 per member as against 64 cents last year. These results aim to be conservative estimates of what may be safely counted on from each church. They are based upon personal subscriptions, and in every case have been passed upon by the pastor and officers of the church. The effect upon the foreign mission treasury receipts will not be evident at once. Many of the subscriptions do not mature for several months. But in the coming year there ought to be great advance. Whether there is to be a real Forward Movement depends upon the stewardship of the pastor and “local representative,’’ in whose keeping this promise of larger service now awaits fulfillment.
