K. Chow, Secretary of the Alliance, Tech Union, Trinity Place, Boston, Mass., U. S. A. gofo^^- . — — __ .5)8^ CHINA MEDICAL BOARD r In accordance with the provisions in the Constitution of the Alhance, the following pages have been published in the hope that it will be of service and usefulness to the members of the Alliance and to those interested in the Chinese students in America. The collection of statistics started one month later than usual owing to the delay in the election of the new executives of the Alliance. The slowness on the part of the members in returning the statistics cards and the great distance separating the different sections through whose machinery the greater part of the statistics was gathered, account for its late ap- pearance. The Alliance published its first Directory in 1911 with English and Chinese names and mail addresses. This policy was adhered to until last year when to the names and ad- dresses was also added other information concerning a Chinese student in this country. This new feature has been incor- porated into the present publication. The work has been much, .enlarged as a result of the inclusion of students in High Schools and of the arrival of even increasing number of Chinese students. An idea of the increase in the number of students included in the Directory can be had from the following sta- tistics : 1910- 1911 , 650 1911- 1912 877 1912- 1913 870 1913- 1914 900 1914- 1915 1400 The Chinese students in this country are a growing body and the Alliance is a growing organization. There will be a time when the organization grows so large as to make the Directory voluminous and the work of publishing and man- aging it by a single student a physical impossibility. It is hoped that the Constitution will be amended so as to entrust the work to a committee which will divide up the whole work among several persons into compiling, editing and managing. ii CHINESE STUDENTS' ALLIANCE DIRECTORY There has been no standard form of statistics cards, each section using its own. The returned cards came in such kaleidoscopic forms that they had to be recast into shape by me before it could go to a stenographer,— whose expensive service I rarely employed in the face of the meagre appropria- tion at my disposal. All this nieant delay and expense. If we could use a standard form of card, if each person would fill it out carefully, and write so legibly that it could go to the printer direct, there would be economy and efficiency and would relieve the greater part of the unpleasantness of the work. I have from my personal knowledge, omitted names of all persons who have returned home. It is probable, .however, that many names under the same category have not been detected and still stand in the list. At present we have no way of ascertaining them. It will be in the interest of both the Alliance and the individual that his departure for home- land be made known to the editor of the Directory. It is to be remembered that all second-class mail which can not be delivered is destroyed by the Post Office Department. I have endeavored in the following pages to place the Chinese names by the side of the English names. The Chinese names were first written on sheets of card board, photo-engraved, and etched on zinc. The Chinese names have been rewritten throughout upon the failure of the first attempt. It is impossible in a work of this kind to be free of errors and omissions and I would feel grateful to those who will call my attention to these mistakes. I desire to acknowledge my indebtedness to the Sectional Secretaries through whose untiring effort much of the statis- tics was gathered ; to the Universities which supplied me with the desired information; to the Chinese Educational Mission at Washington which furnished me with a list of students under its charge; to various other organizations from which I derived much information; and finally to my Chinese friends in Technology who have kindly given me their help. I wish to mention in particular the valuable assistance rendered by Mr. M. C. Hou both in proof-reading and in rewriting portion of the Chinese names. To him I desire to express my deep gratitude. H. K. CHOW. Boston, Mass., 1915. CHINESE STUDENTS' ALLIANCE DIRECTORY iii FEW FACTS ABOUT THE CHINESE STUDENTS ALLIANCE The Alliance had its inception on October 17, 1902, when twenty-three students from Berkeley, Oakland and San Fran- cisco met in the Congregational Church in the last-named city and organized "The Chinese Students Alliance of Amer- ica." This formed the basis for the Western Section of the present Alliance. In 1903, a handful of Chinese students in Chicago formed "The Chinese Students. Alliance of the Middle West." This formed the basis for the Mid- West Section of the present Alliance. In 1905, thirty-six students residing in the eastern part of the United States, assembled in the Museum of the Massa- chusetts Agricultural College at Amherst, organized the "Chinese Students Alliance of the Eastern States." This formed the basis for the Eastern Section of the present Alliance. In 1911, the three independent organizations were con- solidated into one called, "The Chinese Students Alliance in the United States of 'America," and reconstituted them- selves into the Sections of the present Alliance. The objects of the Alliance are to labor for the general welfare of China, both at home and abroad, and to promote the common interests of Chinese students in this country. The active membership of the Alliance is open to all Chinese students. By "Chinese students" are meant persons who are Chinese by birth, descent, naturalization or marriage, according to the nationality laws of China, and who are stu- dents enrolled in universities, colleges, academies, high schools and other educational institutions of secondary rank. They are admitted irrespective of race, sex, religion and creed. Applications should be sent to the Alliance Secretary, or to the Secretaries of the three Sections. Any person, irrespective of nationality (except a Chinese student in the United States of America), who manifests an interest in the Alliance may be elected to associate member- ship. Applications should always be sent to the Alliance Secretary. Any person who has rendered distinguished service to China or to the Alliance, and whom the Alliance wishes to iv . CHINESE STUDENTS' ALLIANCE DIRECTORY honor, may be elected to honorary membership by the Council. The Section authorities may recommend the person to the Alliance Secretary for action by the Council. The Alliance is divided into three Sections, namely: the Eastern, the Mid- Western and the Western Sections, each having its own executive board and all enjoying complete autonomy in so far as their internal affairs are concerned. Each Section delegates certain number of "councilmen" on the basis of membership in that section, and from and among these councilmen, the Executive Board of the Alliance is elected. While the executives of a Section represent the Chinese students who are members within the territory of that Section, the executives of the Alliance represent all the Chinese students in this country who are members of the organization. The local clubs form the component parts of the Sections. They delegate a certain number of Representatives to the Section on the basis of membership in that club. In all, there are no less than thirty of these clubs in this country. Each section holds its Annual Conference. These Con- ferences have proved to be some of the most inspiring gather- ings to a Chinese student. There the atmosphere of friend- liness and the spirit of co-operation always prevailed. The^ Eastern Section has just celebrated its tenth anniversary at Amherst, Mass., last September. The Alliance at present has a membership of approxi- mately eight hundred. The Eastern Section has the largest enrolment, and the Mid- Western and Western Sections come in order. The annual dues for active and associate members are tv70 dollars and fifty cents, gold, payable to the respective Section Treasurers. Members who have fully discharged their obligations to the Alliance, are entitled to the full privi- leges of the Alliance including receiving free the publications listed below and attending the Annual Conference without paying one dollar extra. CHINESE STUDENTS' ALLIANCE DIRECTORY vii EXPLANATORY NOTE FOR THE DIRECTORY The complete information about a student is in this order: Name in Chinese; name in Enghsh; highest academic degree obtained; native province; means of support; the year of arrival; course of study; institution and mail address. For example: ( ) Chow, H. K. 6, I, 10, Aero Eng., M. I. T.; Tech Union, Trinity Place, Boston, Mass. The first numeral following the Enghsh name, "6" represents the province of Kiangsu; 'T," the indemnity fund; ''10" means 1910, the year of coming to this country; "Aero Eng." means Aeronautical Engineering; "M. I.T." stands for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Where the scholarship is not specified, it generally means the student is a private student. When the year of coming to the United States is not mentioned, it is, in the case of a provincial student, a failure to secure such information, but otherwise it generally means the student is nativeborn. When the course of study, in the case of a college or university student, is not specified, it is understood to be academic. Other abbre- viations are sufficiently clear.
