The term “Steam Elevators,” as commonly used, refers to that class of elevators in which a steam hoisting or elevator engine is used, and the car is connected directly to it by means of the wire rope. This term distinguishes it from “Belted Elevators,” which are run indirectly by steam power from line shafting, which in turn is driven by a steam engine or other power. The Steam Elevator Engines are usually placed near the wellhole, and the steam is piped to them directly from the boiler. Each engine is provided with a grooved iron drum, on which is wound the iron cables used in raising and lowering the elevator car. These engines are made in two styles; the worm-gear and the spur-gear. The former are used principally for passenger service on account of their quiet, smooth running, and the latter are used for freight and heavy work on account of the small friction in the spur-gear. HYDRAULIC ELEVATORS. These elevators are used in buildings where there is high pressure steam to run a pump, or in Towns or Cities where the water pressure is high. In the latter case, the water is taken into the cylinder directly from the mains, to raise the car, and in lowering, the water passes into a waste pipe. Where a steam pump is used to obtain the needed pressure, there are two systems—the “pressure tank” and the “open tank on the roof.” In the former case, water is taken from a supply tank, pumped into a closed pressure tank, and drawn from there to the cylinder to raise the car, and in lowering, the water is discharged into the supply tank to be used over again. In the second system, an open tank is used on the roof, and water is pumped into this tank, which, because of its location, gives the required pressure. This water is drawn off into the cylinder and returned to the supply tank, as in the ‘pressure tank” system. The only material difference in the two systems is that in the “pressure tank” system all the tanks and machinery can be placed in the basement, and the steam must be always on the pump to supply the tank when the pressure is reduced, while for the ‘tank on the roof” two lines of pipe must be carried from the basement to the roof, but it has an offsetting advantage in that water may be pumped into the tank to last a number of trips, to run the elevator without running the pump. i a mr m til TM ah SUE ES SCREW = BEING ie ie pws BAGH eb: > | BED oCR EW Siig lel et bh VeeshC ke SEE PAGE 15: IRON FRAME, DOUBLE-GEARED BELT ELEVATOR. BELT ELEVATORS. The above term applies to elevators driven by belts from line shafting, which shaft- ing may be driven by Electric Motor, Steam Engine or Gas Engine. A_ broad-faced pulley is placed on the shaft which drives two belts, an open and a cross belt; these in turn travel on two loose pulleys when the elevator is at rest. To raise the elevator one belt is shifted to a tight pulley and turns it in one direction; to lower the elevator the other belt, which is running in the opposite direction, is shifted to the tight pulley. These machines are of two general types—the screw machines and the spur-gear machines. The devices for shifting the belts and applying and releasing the brake are practically the same in each type. The difference in the machines, as the name indicates, is mainly a difference of gearing. The spur-gear machine has a pinion attached to the pulley shaft, which meshes into a gear, on an intermediate shaft, which in turn, carries a pinion which meshes into a large CcimeOnmcicwcrum shalt. bysthissmeans thesspecdso! the pulley shatteis reduced: toewhatus required on the drum shaft, with a corresponding increase of power. In the Screw Machine there is a steel screw on the pulley shaft, which engages directly with a large bronze worm-gear attached to the drum shaft. In both cases the hoisting rope is connected to the car and runs to a grooved drum, which, to hoist or lower, winds or unwinds the rope as the drum is revolved. These machines are used largely in places provided with line shafting, which is used to drive other machinery. (hese machines can be placed on thesiloor or under the ceiling. — [hey are usually placed under the ceiling, as in this way they take up no valuable space. This term applies to all elevators in which hand power is used in hoisting the load. A machine of this type is useful in buildings where the elevator is used so little that it would not pay to introduce steam, electric or other power. For ordinary freight work these elevators are built to use on standard cars, as shown on page 27, and are provided with safety devices to hold the car at any point in case the lifting cable should break. They are built of any size, from the smallest to a size large enough to carry railroad cars. They are also used largely in stables, and in many cases for private houses, for passengers or trunks; in the latter case, we often use the car on page 21. On page 28 is shown a Four-Rope Carriage Elevator, which is largely used in stables where the overhead room does not permit of a side post car, or where the culde posts would be objectionable on the first floor. All the above elevators are operated by means of a hand rope, which passes down through the floors, alongside of which is a brake rope, so that the elevator can be operated from any floor, and then by pulling the brake rope, it is stopped at any point and locked firmly in position. Another type of Hand Elevator is operated by turning a crank. Two styles are shown on pages 29 and 30. The first is used for Carriage Elevators, usually where they run only one or two stories, and the second cut shows a Sidewalk Elevator, as usually employed to hoist goods from a cellar or subcellar to the sidewalk. In both of these machines we use a double-geared iron frame winding machine, provided with a brake for lowering and a device to hold the load at any point. 31 Ave oe ee Bei CaO LO This motor is constructed entirely of steel, and represents the very latest and most improved type known to electrical science. Its simplicity of construction is obvious, and it is one of the most efficient motors ever designed. Our patents cover the details and general form of the motor itself, and of the brushes. These motors are used in any case where electric power can be obtained, not only for running elevators, but for an infinite variety of purposes. We build them for 110, 220 and 500 volts, and from one to twenty horse-power. They are used exclusively on our own Electric Elevators and Electric Pumps, and have a wide reputation for durability and efficiency. B2 ‘‘A. B. SEE”? ELECTRIC PUMP. In high buildings, where the water pressure is not sufficient to force the water to the top stories, it is found necessary to provide a tank on the roof and a pump to fill it. The simplest and cheapest way of doing this is by means of an Electric Pump. The cut on this page shows one designed by us especially for this service. The “A. B. See” Motor is used and an automatic switch is provided of special design, which is operated by the water in the tank. When. the water is low. it turns the current into the motor and starts the 4 ee io uy _ “jo pump, which runs until the tank is full, and then the current is shut off automatically which stops the pump until the water is low again.
