Fourtu,—It is the slowest, hardest setting, coolest working and most plastic manufactured. This Plaster is manufactured from Gypsum carefully selected at the quarries, and is, consequently, unequalled in quality and eens SUE The constantly increasing demand for our plaster is conclusive evidence of its superior quality. | Wherever it is introduced it has the preference over all others, consumers finding it greatly to their advantage to use it, and dealers readily obtain a large advance in price over all other brands in the market. We call the attention of Architects, Builders, and others interested in the construction of buildings, to the merits of our Patent Cornice, which for high finish and excellence of workmanship cannot be excelled, and is seldom, if ever, equaled. It is the most economical Cornice that can be used for ornamenting the interior of buildings, and is susceptible of elaborate ornamentation, at a moderate cost. By its use, a heavy ornamented Cornice can be put up at about the same cost as a plain run Cornice of similar girth. Being made of our “Selected Plaster” it will not crack or crumble. It is easily put up by any mechanic. Special designs made from Architectural Drawings. SamueL H. Frencu & Co., York Ave., Fourth & Callowhill Sts., PHILADELPHIA, PA. 48 SAMUEL H. Then put your Cornice up (after first having thoroughly soaked it) in the same manner as centres. In corners, cut mitres in the same manner as you would a wooden moulding. Ke WAU UUs UL UA PULL In presenting the following cuts, we show many of our newest designs, and feel confident that in no single year since Marbleized Slate Mantels were first introduced, some thirty years ago, have so many new features embodying novelty and beauty, without sacrificing utility, been produced. We employ the most experienced mechanics, and the best educated and competent artists for the production of our work, and with recent improvements in our machinery, we are in a position to produce the most highly finished and beautiful mantels at the lowest possible cost. We make but one quality—the cheapest mantel is as thoroughly made in every particular as the most expensive. Marbleized Slate Mantes retain their original finish better than most marbles. They are not susceptible of stains from coal gas, acids, oils, liquors, dampness in chimneys, or other causes. They are susceptible of elaborate ornamentation at a small cost by the combination of different marbles, and the judicious use of gold lines and tracings. They are far superior to wood mantels, as they do not shrink, crack, or ignite from the heat; nor do they require re- finishing every few years, as is the case with mantels con- structed of wood, Samuels bl trenches Go. Mantels showing high backs will have them, unless otherwise ordered. 3. All hand-painted work is overglazed, and is more durable than upon wood or canvas. 4. The backs shown upon Nos. 96, 202 and 211 may be ordered for other mantels. 5. Nos. 210 and 222 have silhouette decorations. The figures are black, highly polished, and stand upon the gray background in beautiful contrast with it. The work which this so closely imitates is executed in black marble at large cost. 6. In No. 227 area variety of new features ; the concave quarter columns, double shelf, the lower being 1% inches smaller than the upper, the long trusses and the imitation mosaic tiles. Different marbles are shown in geometrical shapes. The work is finely executed and is indistinguishable from real inlaid marbles. 7. No. 242 represents bricks with black joints between them. The color is that of the finest red enameled bricks ; bases and trusses are commonly of some variety of marble. 8. No. 245, unique and chaste in design, every detail is carefully wrought out, as may be gathered from the engraving. The decorations consist of hand-painted facings. The subjects are Oriental, the larger one a view of the river Nile. Theetchings in gold and silver are quite new in mantel decoration. The fan-shaped piece below the shelf is a piece of mosaic work, several varieties of marble being introduced. Mirrors are French plate, bevel edges. 9. No. 246. This mantel is sold with or without the high mirror back. The tile shown are known as the Elfin’s set. The mirror is French plate, beveled. 10 No. 247 is made either with or without the high mirror back. An examination of the engraving shows the mantel to be well-formed, and while well supported in all places, possesses the light appearance of a wood mantel. The centre is decorated with gold and silver etching, a new method of decorating slate. 11, Another feature, one not clearly represented in engravings, is the reeding. This corresponds with much of the finish of rooms as now made. It is distinctly shown in Nos. 216 and Z10; 12. Any special designs made from architectural drawings. 66 SAMUEL H. FRENCH & CO., PHILADELPHIA, PA. Sek: Direction$ for Setting Mantels. — 1.—Take the fronts, or the pilasters, from the box and place in position upon the hearth, if there is one, otherwise, upon the floor. 2,—Place the wall plates—the two long, straight, one inch thick, unattached pieces—against the wall, back of profiles, finished edges out, Move these out or in until they are adjusted to stand even with both ends of the shelf when put in place. 3.—Fasten the fronts to the wall with wire or hooks, one end to be placed in holes drilled in top of fronts, fasten there with Calcined Plaster ; the other end fasten to hook in the wall. To keep any piece from drawing in, cut small sticks and brace from the back ; these will remain if the mantel is not set for a fire—if there is to bea fire-place the mason will remove them when he sets the bricks, 4.—If there is a centre, put in place, and make use of a piece of board or iron asa washer across the back of the fronts where they join. 5.—Place the circles, two narrow circular pieces—or, if a square mantel, the facings, three narrow straight pieces—inside the opening, and fasten in place with small wood braces. 6.—Some mantels, in addition to inside facings, have inside returns, Their use is to set the facings further back, and consequently, the grate or grate frame. These are commonly three inches. in width, and are placed with finished edges to the front. 7,—When all other parts are set up, place Calcined Plaster upon the upper edges, and bed the shelf into it ; then set the top strip against the wall and fasten it with Plaster. Clean with a soft stick and wash the mantel all over, using cold water and sponge ; afterwards, dry with chamois or very soft cotton. SAMUEL H. Vee nme en Set NZ ay Our Glass-cutting Department is under the care of a prac- tical Glass Cutter of many years’ experience, who gives every order his personal supervision ; this, with the most modern and improved machinery in the hands of skilled artisans, insures the highest. perfection in Glass Cutting. All our work is regularly and evenly cut, and all polished, so as to give the full lustre which is too frequently lost in an effort to reduce the cost of production by turning out work with unpolished parts. Weare now making a new departure in Glass Cutting, by producing a diamond cut on thick polished plate, similar in de- sign to that used upon the best table ware. This can be made with or without a border, the former being most in favor for vestibule and transom lights; it can also be cut as a narrow border upon beveled plate window lights, giving the beautiful effect of prismatic rays, while the centre has an unbroken polished surface ; this undoubtedly makes the most pleasing and beautiful window that can be constructed. We execute special designs for Architects and others. Samuef H. drench Je Go., ayork Ave., SourtA Xe Gallowhilf Ofs., ®)RifadefpRia, 170 SAMUEL H. FRENCH & CO., PHILADELPHIA, PA. CUT GLASS. Height of Top, 2 feet 10 inches. a These Tops being made of hard, well-burned Terra Cotta, are durable in any climate, and do not become black and dis- colored, as most Tops manufactured in this country do Their construction is such as to increase the draft of flues and at the same time prevent the wind from blowing down the chimney, thus making them the most reliable Tops offered in the market. Wind blowing from any direction must pass up through the holes C, and out at B, thus creating a vacuum in the smoke flue A, of the top which mechanically increases the draft. It is impossible for a chimney to smoke with these tops on. They give universal satisfaction. Price of Top, f. o. b. Philadelphia, $4.75. FRENCH & CO.., IMPORTERS AND DEALERS IN foreign and Domestic Gementé. English, French, German and American. Portland Cements. English and Scotch Roman Cements. French's Rosendale Cement. Anchor Cement. AND VARIOUS OTHER BRANDS. DIRECTIONS FOR MIXING AND USING CEMENTS. ‘Take one (1) part cement and one (1) part sand, and in all cases mix the sand and cement well together before applying water, and do not mix more than can be used in thirty (30) minutes. The sand should be clean, sharp and entirely free from any foreign matter. In plastering walls with cement, care should be taken that the surface is washed clean, and the cement applied while the bricks or stones are still damp. As a general rule, slow setting cements are the best. Cement mixed with cold water in cold weather, in a damp place, may take from ten (10) to twenty (20) days to get moderately hard, but will eventually become perfectly solid. } Cement worked during warm weather sets much quicker than it does in cold weather, and even then it takes several days to harden. Some kinds of cement sets so fast that it is not safe to mix more than can be used within twenty (20) minutes. Mortar made of cement worked after it begins to set, becomes more or less damaged, and frequently worthless. Cement should be kept in a perfectiy dry place, and the barrels containing it that have been opened should be closed by putting in the head, or covered so as to exclude the air. One (1) barrel cement and one (1) barrel sand mixed, will cover a surface of about 72 square feet, one (1) inch thick. Concrete.—Mix equal parts of cement and sand together to the consistency of mortar, and then add four parts of broken stone or coarse gravel, or as much as can be mixed with it, and when thoroughly rammed will give sufficient cement on the surface for finishing. | Wet the broken stone or gravel before mixing with the cement. The strongest colors made in the world for coloring Mortar, Cement and Plaster. Peerless Colors are manufactured from the best and most permanent pigments. ‘They are ground extremely fine in pulp state, and hence mix readily with mortar, giving a uniform color at all times, with but little labor and small expense. ‘Their composition is such as to increase the strength of the mortar, and they are brilliant and thoroughly permanent, and instead of losing their Color and becoming dull, as many of the coloring substances used for this purpose do, they become somewhat darker by age, and at all times retain their brilhancy. If properly used they always give satisfaction. DIRECTIONS FOR USE. Make up your (bricklayers’) mortar in the usual manner, being careful to have it well ¢empered, and as free as possible from lumps of Lime, and any foreign matter ; then add the “ Peerless Color,’’ and to insure uniformity, give them a thorough hoeing together. It will require about forty (40) pounds of the Black, and sixty (60) pounds of the Red, Brown or Buff, to color sufficient mortar for laying a thousand bricks. These proportions vary according to thickness of joint and depth of color desired: Again, some make but a surface joint, while others lay the entire course with colored mortar. These colors work equally well with Foreign and Domestic Cements. gas PEERLESS Coors should not be used in hot mortar. Always keep them well covered to prevent dust, dirt or other foreign matter from getting into them, and also to prevent the moisture from evaporat- ing, which would cause the colors to cake, and thus make them difficult to mix with the mortar. After opening the package, we would advise keeping a small quantity of water on the color, which must in all cases be removed before using the color again. FOR INSIDE FINISEs Peerless Colors are the best in the market for tinting the finishing coat of walls. ‘They should be thoroughly incorporated with the white stuff before running off, in such quantities as may be necessary to make the desired tint. Apply in the usual manner. SAMUEL H. FRENCH & CO., PHILADELPHIA, PA. | | Established 1844. SAMUEL H. FRENCH «& CO.. PHILADELPHIA, PA. Peerless Colors for Mortar. RED. For contrast with the various colored bricks, also for massing with red stretchers or pressed bricks. This is the latest and most desirable style of erecting buildings. Peerless Red is much stronger than any of the reds (dry or moist) now in use, and is more readily mixed with the mortar. It wz// not fade, and the joints do not require penciling, as is the case with most of the other reds. It does not blacken with age and wash over the face of the brick, as is frequently the case where joints are colored with Venetian Red, Spanish Brown, and many of the mineral paints. It will not in any way add to or assist in forming a deposit of Magnesia on the bricks. BLACK. This makes a beautiful jet black joint that will not wash out and deface the walls, as powdered coal and other worthless compounds do. It has the advantage over Lamp-Black of being /e¢ Black, and of working smoothly and making a finer finished and more solid joint. It does not cause the mortar to work spongy, as is the case with Lamp Black. Being of extreme fineness, it incorporates readily with the mortar, and thus saves much time in mixing. It is used for making a continuous belt or massing with Blaek Bricks, also for a contrast with Red Bricks, for which purpose it is most largely used. When used with Buff, White, Drab, or any light-colored Bricks, the effect is quite beautiful. BROWN. Well adapted as a contrast for most of the various colored Bricks, and particularly so with Buff. BUTE: For massing same colored Bricks, and contrast with Black and Red. Send for circular giving testimonials, prices, terms, etc. CAUTION.—Since the introduction of our Peerless Colors, there have been numerous worthless imitations put upon the market, and we therefore ask architects and builders, when ordering colors for mortar, to specify SAMUEL H. FRENCH & CO.’S PEERLESS COLORS, and to see that all packages have our labels upon them. 208 SAMUEL H. FRENCH & CO., PHILADELPHIA, PA. eps ESTABLISHED 1844. Samuel H.
