I. JSutroduction OR more than a generation The Gorham Company’s Bronze Foundry has been one of the most important departments of that great organi- zation. Marked success has been continually evidenced by the fact that the leading sculptors of America have entrusted to the Gorham Foundry highly important commissions. Noteworthy to a remarkable extent have been heroically proportioned bronze statues, bas reliefs and portrait busts, many of which have attained world-wide celebrity. The principles which have governed for nearly a century the manufac- ture of Gorham Silverware are the same unvarying standards of workman- ship followed in the Bronze Department. The various processes required for producing Gorham Bronze castings demand not only conscientious and intelligent supervision and honesty of purpose, but also a high degree of technical skill and artistic sympathy on the part of all those who are engaged in carrying through every stage of the work to the ultimate pitch of artistic perfection, and in order that no interference with the ideas and intentions of the sculptor who modeled the original may be apparent. The working of bronze into enduring forms dates back to the very inception of the history of the artistic crafts, and from early times has been the favorite material of the designers of heroic statues and other sculptured works, (Torts 2 7 The Gorham Company - Fifth Avenue and 36th Street, New York Bronze as a material for the tablet form of memorial is beyond all others permanent. No more fitting form of memorial has yet been devised than the decorative tablet of bronze. It is artistic, unostentatious and equally appropriate, whether placed in church, hospital, library or public building. While unlike the mortuary monument, its erection is fitting at any time, no matter how many years have elapsed since the death of the person or the performance of the deed it is designed to commemorate. The lettered memorial in tablet form has always held an important place in the world’s history. The hieroglyph-incised “stile” of the Egyptian, the half-worn brass in the quaint English country church, and the more enduring bronze tablet which adorns the modern buildings are all linked together in one common lineage. Inspired by the same spirit or reverence for those who have departed, and by the same desire to permanently record their praise- worthy deeds or their moral excellences, these tablets have had for the living the double value of a memorial and an incentive, so their erection assures the respect of a duty towards the community at large, as well as an act of loving regard to those commemorated. The urgency of our customers has continually led us to broaden our field of activities. Skilled artificers in gold and silver, casters of brass and bronze, carvers of ivory and wood, workers in marble and stone, expert craftsmen in enamels and mosaic, artists in stained glass — all these are working in our own studios, under the personal supervision of our designers and department superintendents. Special brochures relating to any of the above subjects will be sent on application. Gorham quality is maintained everywhere, and the certainty of authority and accuracy of treatment have placed many of these departments well in advance of any establishment of similar nature in the United States.
