(Harper’s Encyclopaedia of United States History) For ten generations the Sedgwicks have continued in the craft, devising and fashioning from metal and wood those machines and mechanical devices which have contributed so largely to the wonderful progress of the United States, handing down from father to son the skill and experience accumulated during more than two and a half centuries of conscientious effort. In 1844, Charles Henry Sedgwick, whose likeness from an old photograph is reproduced on the opposite page, and who was the seventh direct descendant of General Robert Sedgwick, brought the business to Poughkeepsie, N. Y., our present location. In 1893, Alonzo Sedgwick, son of Charles Henry Sedgwick, associated with Justus Ingersoll Wakelee, erected a new plant and concentrated their united energies on the manufacture of Hand Power Elevators and Dumb Waiters. The business was incorporated September |, 1913, under the laws of the State of New York, with Justus Ingersoll Wakelee as President and General Manager, and Dwight Robert Sedg- wick, son of Alonzo Sedgwick, as Treasurer and Factory Manager. In 1925, Dwight Robert Sedgwick was elected President to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Justus Ingersoll Wakelee. At this time, Horace Wright Yarrington became Secretary, and Justus Ingersoll Wakelee, Jr., Treasurer. Cars are handsomely finished, the wood being first filled and then surfaced with two coats of best varnish. Dumb Waiter Cars are carried in stock in sizes, listed on page 6, fitted either with one hinged shelf or two solid shelves, in addition to the top and bottom. Dumb Waiter Cars fitted with one hinged shelf are, for the No. | size, 30 inches high inside; for the Nos. 2, 3 and 4a sizes, 36 inches high inside. Dumb Waiter Cars fitted with two solid shelves are regularly 6 inches higher. The No. 5a size car is regularly furnished 48 inches high inside with one hinged shelf. The outside or overall height of Dumb Waiter Cars is about 6 inches greater than the inside heights given in the above paragraph. We recommend the fitting of Double Face Cars with solid shelves, when possible, as the solid shelves give additional strength and rigidity to the Car. Dumb Waiter Cars are regularly shipped assembled and crated, but will be shipped knocked-down, upon request. Door openings of sufficient size to admit the Car into the well must always be provided until after the outfit is installed. If sufficiently large openings to admit the assembled Car are not provided, it is necessary to build Cars of special design, which may be assembled inside the well. AUTOMATIC BRAKE DUMB WAITER OUTFITS HE Sedgwick Automatic Brake Dumb Waiter Outfits are a great improvement over all automatic lock and other self- retaining dumb waiters, and are especially designed for purchasers who consider just as carefully what they are getting, as what they are paying. Sedgwick Automatic Brake Dumb Waiter Machine Automatic Brake Dumb Waiters are suit- able for residences and similar service where average loads do not exceed twenty-five pounds. For heavier work, see pages 12, 13 and 14. When the operator ceases pulling hand-rope, the automatic brake applies, holding car at any point in its travel. Accidents through careless handling are prevented by this device. The brake does not lock fast, but is applied and regulated by the load, holding the car securely at any point, but at the same time allowing it to be raised and lowered smoothly and easily without jumping or jarring. Independently supported, the automatic brake does not transmit to the machine any end thrust, strain, or unnecessary wear. Automatic Brake Dumb Waiters are su- perior in principle, design, construction, and finish, and are unequaled for durability and safety. A “Fool Proof’ Outfit ope yvat ler Une tL hE ele Ween te OS. I] BAND BRAKE DUMB WAITER OUTFITS HE Band Brake Dumb Waiter is specially adapted to carrying light loads, averaging twenty-five pounds or less, in high hoistways in factories, stores, etc., where a strong, rapid running dumb waiter for hard service is required. For heavier work, see pages 12, 13 and 14. Pulling down on the brake rope applies the brake partially, and controls the speed in lowering; a final pull locks the brake and holds the car stationary until the operator pulls up on the brake rope. Requiring some judgment on the operator’s part, it is usually advisable to install the Band Brake Dumb Waiter Outfit for the carrying of loads which are of an unbreakable nature. All shafting is of steel, and all bearings are fitted with steel anti-friction rollers, making an easily operated, rapid, smooth-running and durable machine. They are manufactured in large quantities with special tools, insuring greatest accuracy, and are sold at the lowest price consistent with the quality of the mechanism. The illustration of Sedgwick Automatic Brake Dumb Waiter erected in plastered hoistway (page 10) shows proper installation for lath and plaster construction. Horizontal cats, or bridging should be placed between vertical studs, on 30-inch centers, to which the guide runs are secured by long screws passing through lath and plaster. In many cases it is preferred to ceil the hoistway with wood as shown on page 7. If hoistway is of fireproof material or has been finished without the bridging, it may be necessary to put cleating on the face of the plaster, to which the guide runs shall be secured. This cleating may be horizontal and nailed to studs, or vertical, back of the guide runs, if proper fastening can be had. Guide runs are always to be secured with screws, never nailed. Self-contained machine, a complete unit. 2. Sedgwick automatic brake, operating whether counter- weight be located at right or left of car, is of recognized superi- ority, allowing smooth and safe operation, the device auto- matically adjusting itself to the load carried. 3. Anti-friction roller bearings (the proper type of bearing for the service) make for ease of operation, quiet running, and increased life of the machine. 4. Machine-cut gears eliminate the possibility of uneven- ness in machine performance which is often experienced with cast gears. By means of these gears we can arrange that each pound of pull on the hand-rope will raise from four to ten pounds of load, depending on the gears and hand-wheel used. 5. Full diameter hoist wheel, over which cable connecting car and counterweight travels, permits cable to drop straight to both car and counterweight without the use of intermediate leading sheaves or idlers. The great advantage derived from the elimination of friction is emphasized by (a) Increased ease of operation, (b) Doubling life of the car cable. Reducing the number of moving parts in the mechanism further guarantees long and reliable satisfactory service. The full diameter hoist wheel gives a 50 per cent gripping surface of wheel on car cable, effecting certain and unfailing transmission of the automatic brake action. Lowest in Ultimate Cost GEARED BAND BRAKE DUMB WAITERS HE Sedgwick Geared Band Brake Dumb Waiters are designed for heavy service, and are especially desirable in commercial establishments, where loads exceeding twenty-five pounds are regularly handled. These outfits will give good results with occasional or test loads up to two hundred pounds. The operator controls the speed of dumb waiter by means of the brake rope. Pulling down partially applies brake and tends to regulate speed when lowering; a final pull locks the brake and holds car stationary until the op- erator pulls up on the brake rope. In the geared band brake ma- chines, the hand wheel and the lift wheel are on separate shafts, which are mounted in substantial iron frames, with anti-friction steel roller bearings, and the motion of the hand wheel is transmitted to the lift wheel through a pair of carefully designed iron gears. The Compound Geared Dumb Waiters are used with great satisfaction for capacity loads of three and four hundred pounds. Provided with two sets of machine-cut spur gears, a sufficient gear reduction is secured in the machine so as to permit the operator to raise heavy loads with reasonable effort. The heavy iron frames insure permanent alignment of shafting and thereby minimize friction, which is practically eliminated by anti-friction roller bearings in every bearing and the use of full diameter hoist wheels. Safety in use of this dumb waiter is assured by equipping machine with two hoist wheels and using two wire hoist ropes to suspend car and counterweight. These cables are inde- pendently attached and either alone is of sufficient strength to carry safely car and counter- weight. Besides the heavy duty machine, heavy materials are used throughout the building of the entire outfit so as to insure long and dependable service in spite of severe use. Sedgwick Under Counter Dumb Waiter Many Different Styles 18 S ED GO oWiIC K Ww MvAlClHeIsSNiE Ss WreOgkane ICELESS REFRIGERATORS HE term “Iceless Refrigerator’ is used to describe an arrangement for the preservation of food without the expense, trouble and annoyance of ice. In most homes the cellar is sufficiently cool to preserve the supplies of food which are carried over from one meal to another, and these cool cellars were the only means which our parents had in many cases for the preservation of such food. Once in a while someone was fortunate enough to have a very cool well or spring of pure water, and the food would be placed in a vessel and lowered into this well. Nowadays, however, the effort required to run up and down stairs to carry the food down after meals and to bring it up again when wanted is correctly assumed to involve a greater ex- penditure of effort than the cost of ice justifies, and therefore many people resort to the use of the ordinary refrigerator. The use of the Iceless Refrigerator, or in other words, a Sedgwick Automatic Brake Dumb Waiter, (page 10) as a cabinet in which the food may be placed and then lowered either into the cool cellar or, if the cellar be not sufficiently cool, into a prepared well or pit beneath the cellar floor is becoming more and more general because a good dumb waiter costs but little more than a good refrigerator and the saving over the use of ice is likely to pay for the dumb waiter ina season or two. The only difference between one of the regular Sedgwick Dumb Waiter Outfits and such an outfit designed to be used as an Iceless Refrigerator is the furnishing of a heavier counter- weight which shall weigh enough to balance both the car and the average weight of food and dishes to be kept in it. In ordering, therefore, it is well to state what the estimated weight of the usual load will be, so that a sufficient amount of extra counterweight may be furnished with the outfit, for which there is a small additional charge. The special advantage of the Sedgwick Automatic Brake Dumb Waiter Outfit (page 10) for this purpose is found in the fact that the Sedgwick Machine is automatic and effective in both directions. If the loaded car should be heavier than the counterweight, the automatic brake prevents the car running down. If, on the other hand, so much of the load be removed that the car is lighter than the coun- terweight, again the automatic brake prevents the car running up. So whatever the conditions, no accident can happen. BOOK LIFTS ANKS, insurance companies, libraries and commercial establishments have found the Sedgwick Dumb Waiters valuable labor-saving equipment when used as book lifts. The hearthstone has been the center of the home life; the hearth fire has been the symbol of the family spirit. Most people appreciate that the open fireplace is one of home’s most inviting features; and rare indeed is the home- builder who does not insist upon at least one open fire as the altar of his household gods, the center of his family life. Despite this traditional longing of man for a fireside of his own—and despite the readiness of architects to gratify that longing—it is a fact that most fireplaces lie cold and dead, lacking that which is their very soul and their only justifica- tion—the fire on the hearth. The explanation of this anomaly is simple. It is found in the inconvenience and untidiness of supplying the fuel and removing the ashes—two very necessary operations which nevertheless offend the sensibilities alike of master and mistress. The Sedgwick Fuel Lift solves the problem and fills a long felt want. Sedgwick Log Lifts are larger and heavier outfits designed to carry larger sizes of firewood. Details and Prices upon Request. A slight pull on brake rope partially applies the brake and controls speed of car in lowering. A final pull locks the brake and the outfit cannot move or be moved until the operator releases the brake by pulling up on the brake rope. ‘The brake band is lined with vulcanized fibre and is practically indestructible. The two hoist wheels, as shown in cut, allow the use of separate hoist cables, thus dividing the load, and one acting as a safety for the other. ‘This is the safest arrangement known. With the larger sizes are furnished two lift wheels as shown in cut, or scored iron drum, as may be best suited to the work to be performed. This elevator complete is in use in many stores and factories for handling freight, also in private houses and hotels for trunk lifts. This arrangement may sometimes be substituted for the corner post car as shown at the lower part of page 23. The regular side post freight car shown on page 21, or an enclosed car as shown on page 26, or the special car shown on this page may be used, whichever is best suited to the work. We have specialized for over thirty years in the design, manufacture and installation of hand power elevators and dumb waiters for all purposes. This specialized experience is at your command. GRAVITY DROPS HIS is a term adopted to distinguish outfits designed for use where the loads are uniformly down. The Sedgwick Machine Works has installed such outfits for the National Biscuit Co., American Sugar Refining Co., Kirkman Soap Co., Dover Fire Brick Co., and many other firms. These outfits, being designed to suit the general scheme for handling their materials, give more satisfactory results than would anything else. Sedgwick Gravity Drops are particularly well suited to installation in manufacturing establish- ments where raw materials are first raised on electric elevators to upper floors of buildings and then are lowered from floor to floor in course of production. This lowering may be more efficiently and econom- ically handled by Sedgwick Gravity Drops in most instances. There is practically no maintenance cost, and the Gravity Drops are usually operated by the person handling the load at upper floor, thus eliminating the need for a special elevator operator. In lowering, power is not used, simply release the brake and control the speed. Upon installing the Grip Hoist some prefer to reduce the counterweight sufficiently that even the empty car will descend upon the release of the brake. The Universal is run by two belts (one straight, the other crossed). The Differential has cut gears of highest quality, insuring smooth running and is operated by a single belt. Both are carried in stock in two sizes: No. | will lift 2000 pounds test load on a good elevator; No. 2, 3000 pounds. These Grip Hoists may be located on floor, ceiling, or joist work. For such service they have proved to be the most satisfactory equipment obtainable because of their safety, ease of operation, and simplicity. The illustration was suggested by a letter from a customer who said that his five-year-old boy operated the elevator without undue exertion and had a lot of fun being the ‘‘Elevator Man.” All Sedgwick outfits are good, but none have inspired our enthusiasm to: the extent that these Invalid Elevators. have, because there is no other outfit in the market like them, and because of the many letters of appreciation and gratitude we have received from those who have them. HOSPITAL ELEVATORS Wi have made a special study of the prob- lems involved in the design, manufacture and installation of hand power elevators and dumb waiters for hospitals. eT Sedgwick Hatchway Hoist If architects and hospital authorities requir- ing hand power outfits will consult us, we can furnish outfits which, because they are designed especially for the purpose, may be expected to give satisfactory service. The Sedgwick Hand Power Hospital Elevators are designed with special reference to the practically uniform conditions under which hospital elevators are to be operated. The primary essential of a satisfactory hand power elevator being dependability and relia- bility, it is necessary that the outfit shall be strong, to guard against accident; simple, to pre- vent getting out of order; and fitted with a powerful and dependable brake so that the outfit is always under perfect control of the operator. The next and equally important essential is ease of operation and reasonable speed. All these essentials depend upon proper design, proper material and workmanship and correct installation, which are characteristic of Sedgwick Hand Power Elevator outfits for hospital service. Special circular on this outfit will be sent on request. Outfits for Every Purpose—Index Last Page Pour yvauo Loloth STREET, NEW YORK 29 AUTOMOBILE ELEVATORS AND Power Elevators for hand- ling automobiles are frequently desirable where there is not sufficient work to warrant the instal- lation of power elevators, as for ex- ample, transportation to the repair department, or a paint shop, or for dead storage, or to a show room. The Sedgwick Automobile Elevator, like all the Sedgwick outfits, is strong, simple, and dependable. The Sedgwick Grip Hoists illustrated on page 25 are frequently used in con- nection with these outfits, thus permit- ting the use of power for lifting the loads at comparatively little expense. Lumber for posts, overhead timbers, and bolts, screws, and nails required in erecting are not included in the outfit itself, but will be included where we furnish estimates for installation. Sidewalk Elevators serve a variety of purposes, perhaps one of the most common being for removal of ashes. For this use Sedgwick Sidewalk Ele- vators are doubly serviceable in schools, banks, and many other buildings, as they may be used also for carrying all kinds of freight, supplies, fur- niture, trunks, etc. These outfits are regularly built as shown in illustration at left in three capacities, 1500 pounds, 2000 pounds, and 2500 pounds, but may be had from 500 pounds to 10,000 pounds capacity. DUG owss The Sedgwick Sidewalk Elevator illustrated at left is regularly built in two capacities, 500 pounds and 1000 pounds, but may be had in any capacity desired. This outfit combines every advantage found in any sidewalk elevator with some advantages found in no other. The crank handle is thrown out of gear when lowering and the outfit is easily controlled by the powerful self-locking band brake. COMPLETE OUTEIT INCLUDES Machine, trusses, drum shaft and drums, bearings, and main gear, two T uprights, platform, chains, and foot plates. Special Arrangements to Suit Conditions 150 WEST 15th STREET, NEW YORK 31 SIDEWALK ELEVATORS HE outfit illustrates a method of bringing the gearing forward as is required in some cases. All Sedgwick Sidewalk Elevators are strong, durable, and easy running, and are equipped with the Sedgwick Fibre-Lined, Self-Locking Band Brake. The crank shaft is thrown out of gear, so that it does not revolve when lowering and a slight pressure on the brake lever controls the speed. A final movement of the lever locks the brake and holds the platform stationary at any point desired. ete ASH CRANE HE Sedgwick Ash Crane (shown at right) makes a very simple and convenient device with which to hoist cans of ashes. When not in use the Crane is dropped below sidewalk level as indicated in dotted lines. When raised to position shown in cut the Crane may be swung to any position required, thus permitting the cans to be raised without coming in contact with surrounding walls or the hatch combing, and when the cans are above the sidewalk level the Crane may be swung around so as to deposit them upon the sidewalk. We furnish crane, brackets for supporting same, self-retaining block and fall, also bail for can.
