Prayer Calendar and Directory Mission Fields and Missionaries of the Christian and Missionary Alliance January, 1924 The Christian and Missionary Alliance 690 Eighth Avenue, New York City PREFACE The Prayer Calendar and Directory is sent forth in the name of the Lord of the Harvest with the prayer that: the followers of Christ shall be con- strained to pray more earnestly and definitely for the work and the workers in different portions of the Master’s harvest field—the world. In the pages of this book are given the names of the mission fields of the Christian and Mission- ary Alliance with the names of the stations and missionaries in each field and special items of interest to aid in leading the soul out in definite, earnest, prevailing prayer. The assignment of missionaries to stations on the various fields is given in this Prayer Calendar according to the latest information in the Foreign Office at the time of publication, but, since the appointments are made on each field at the time of their annual convention and the date for this varies in the different fields, it is evident that many changes occur soon after any edition of the Prayer Calendar is published. Those using the Prayer Calendar are advised to watch the columns of the Alliance Weekly for up-to-date information re- garding location of missionaries, opening of new stations, ete. “Continue in prayer and watch in the same with thanksgiving.” fGOD .SO Su0OVEUse es oe THAT HE GAVE.” As on Calvary God gave the supreme gift of His love for the redemption of man, so today the love of God reaches out for the salvation of men in every nation and tribe of earth. This love of God can only make itself fully known to the peoples of earth through Christian lives bearing witness to the Gospel. Thus, MEN are needed—many men and women of God. To open, equip, man and maintain mission stations requires the use of money. Thus, MONEY is needed—much money given freely by God’s people. But mere human devotion and energy are powerless against the terrible forces of Satan and sin which hold men in their grip, and money is of little value to meet the needs of men. Only as through prayer the men become the means of God’s working and channels of God’s blessing, and the money is used according to God’s purpose and plan will the work of God be ac- complished, the love of God be made known in all the world and the church of God be completed through the winning to Christ of men from every tribe of earth. Thus, PRAYER is needed—intense, continual, pre- vailing, intercessory prayer. The supreme need and the final appeal of the mis- sionary task is that the work shall be underwritten by prayer. Christ Jesus, holding in His life all en- ergies, and all plans, and all love, wants each of us through intercession to release His energies, to discover His plans and to make His love known to mankind. There are three kinds of prayer—communion, peti- tion and intercession. As S. D. Gordon says, ‘“‘Com- munion and petition store the life with the power of God; intercession lets it out on behalf of others.” INTERCESSION IS THE PUTTING FORTH OF VITAL ENERGY. Service, the giving of money, the going out of missionaries, represent the going forth of the life of the church. Intercession is no less a putting forth of its vital energy. Something really happens when men pray aright. In Christ’s teaching prayer involves. the putting forth of vital energy in- tended to secure definite and unmistakable results. Prayer is not passive, it is active. INTERCESSION IS A GREAT ACHIEVING POWER. It is the only means by which the individual can touch the whole world. INTERCESSION BREAKS DOWN BARRIERS. _ It is the greatest known solvent of difficulties. Christian history affords many examples of obstacles which have yielded to prayer. INTERCESSION OPENS DOORS. Not merely prison doors, as in the case of Peter, but every door whose opening would lead to the furtherance of the Gospel may be prayed open, if we but truly prevail in prayer. INTERCESSION CALLS FORTH WORKERS TO ENTER OPEN DOORS. Christ said, ‘‘Pray ye the Lord of the Harvest to send forth laborers into His harvest.” INTERCESSION RELEASES MONEY FOR THE SPREAD OF THE KINGDOM. The financial problem involved in the evangelization of the world is after all primarily a spiritual problem. Many a financial need remains unmet because there is no intercessor. INTERCESSION BRINGS VICTORY IN HOURS OF CRISIS. It puts new courage into the hearts of the workers and inspires them to renewed zeal in life and service, in love and prayer. INTERCESSION MAKES POSSIBLE THE PREACH- ING OF THE GOSPEL WITH COMPELLING POWER. The workers in God’s vineyard need such a rich and full measure of the presence of God as will make their lives compelling. Prayer contributes much to this end. 3 . > The Acts is the first column of missionary history and is full of the story of answered prayer. It was in connection with ten days of prayer (Acts 1:4), when the church united its intercessions with those of Christ (John 14:16), that the Holy Spirit was released upon the disciples for world-wide witnessing. It was prayer that made the vision of the Christ Man and the Christ Message clear (Acts 6:4-10; 7:60). Prayer safeguarded the lives of the workers (Acts 4: 24-31; 12:5; 16:25; 27:24). It was at a place of prayer that the first converts in Europe were made (Acts 16: 18-15). Intercession thrust the apostolic missionaries forth on their evangelizing journeys (Acts 13: 2-4). Prayer called forth the martyr spirit and gave the workers resistless courage (Acts 4:31; 16:24). Intercession released great spiritual forces (Acts 10 and 11), influenced courses of action (Acts 3:1), pre- pared the field and subdued the enemies of Christ (Acts 16: 25-29). All this and more intercession will do for the modern church, if only with the same abandon and the same insight modern men go forth to their world-wide conquering tasks. Paul’s conviction concerning prayer as a power indispensable in the preaching of the Gospel may be summarized as follows: The Primacy of prayer—‘First of all,” 1 Tim. 2:1. The Inclusiveness of prayer—‘‘In everything,” Phil. 4:6. The Time for prayer—‘‘At all seasons,’ Eph. 6:18. The Place for prayer—‘In every place,” 1 Tim. 2: 8. The Continuity of prayer—‘‘Without ceasing,” 1 Thess. 527; The Plea of prayer—‘‘In My Name,” John 16: 23. The Spirit of prayer—‘In the Holy Ghost,’’ Jude 20. “PRAY YE THEREFORE” (The paragraphs on this and the preceding pages are taken largely from an excellent tract, ‘‘Intercession,” by Wm. E. Doughty.) 4 OFFICERS OF THE CHRISTIAN AND MISSIONARY ALLIANCE Headquarters address of the Christian and lca eh Alliance, 690 Eighth Ave., New York, OFFICERS Founder, Rey. A. B.
