The following pages illustrate the several styles of lamps we manufacture. Under each style is listed the candle powers and voltages we commonly supply. We make to order any candle power in any style. UNANCHORED COIL FILAMENT LAMPS. Are well adapted for general illuminations, when used vertically with tip down, especially for illuminating halls, and for out of door lighting. The single coil for 16 c. p. The double coil for 10 c. p. or less. ANCHORED OVAL FILAMENT LAMPS. For general illumination, where lamp is inclined or subject to jars. TYPES M AND N. To fill all the above requirements, and especially valuable where more useful light is required. See following pages. OUR G UARANTEE. All goods supplied by us if not as repre- sented will be replaced free of charge. Note.—Do not wait until goods are used up. If they are not satisfactory write UiSeace Once. GILMORE ELECTRIC CO. Light. Users of incandescent lamps are beginning to realize that no one style of lamp will fill all requirements; one case required horizontal, another vertical light: For convenience we will divide the light given from an incandescent lamp into three parts. LOST LIGHT. That part throWwn into the base of the lamp and lost, or throtwn so high that tt is of no value. HORIZONTAL LIGHT. Light from a lamp between the angles of 45 degrees above to 50 degrees below the horizontal. USEFUL OR VERTICAL LIGHT. Light between the angle of 40 degrees either side of the tip. The sum total of these three parts constitute Spherical Light. We claim that what we call Useful Light is in most cases the most valuable, but there are some cases, where Horizontal Light is equally valuable. TYPES M AND N. A lamp to give vertical or useful light must of necessity be one containing a filament with several coils or convolutions. These coils must have sufficient rigidity and in order to get this must be anchored. At the present time our Types M and N are the only anchored filament lamps that give a large amount of useful light. In perfecting this lamp we made over twenty different styles of lamps, mostly anchored, but all except Types M and N had some undesirable electrical or mechanical feature. Fig’s 2, 3 and 4 were among the best, but even these were not satisfactory. The principal difficulty of anchoring a filament of many coils is illustrated in Fig’s 6 and 7. If coil (c) is held rigid, coil (a) will in vibrating short circuit on the anchor and burn out the filament. The end of the anchor might be insulated, but that would be unmechanical and clumsy. Again, an anchor direct on the coil does not allow proper expansion and contraction of the filament due to turning on and off the current. Fig’s 2 and 4 show a form of anchor that lacks mechanical strength, obstructs the light and does not at all support the coils. Compare Fig’s 5 and 14 for liability of coils to strike anchor. Note that in Type M the coils can be separated at (b) so as to spread the light around the tip, impossible in the 4 coil type. GILMORE~ ELECTRIC’ CO. P. | It has been the custom to measure lamps by the horizontal candle-power regardless of the large or small amount of light thrown in the useful direction. This is not a fair test, for if you measure two lamps (according to this stand- ard) the one that has the most light in the horizontal and least in the vertical direction will have the longest life, and apparently be the most efficient. Law. It follows from the law of conservation of energy that several filaments of exactly the same length, diameter and risistance, will.give exactly the same total light, (spherical light) at the same consumption of energy. Regardlessof the shape of the filament. But the shape of the filament does determine how this total light is distributed in the various directions. In order to demonstrate the above facts we have made a great many tests. The test shown in Fig. 15 were made on lamps so constructed that the light usually lost in the base could be measured. The filaments were all made out of the same piece of fibre, and measured very care- fully before and after carbonizing. In every way all the lamps received exactly the same treatment. Relative Values. Curves in Fig. 15 show the relative values of the three types only as far as distribution of candle-power is con- cerned, and do not consider the value of anchors, etc. By changing the size of the coils, slightly different results were obtained, butin all the tests the relative values were about as shown. In Fig. 16 we show five types of lamps all with the same horizontal rating (16 candle- power). The accompanying table shows the distribution of light, energy, etc., for four types of lamps all of the same life. Lamps are of the same life when the watts per spherical candle-power is the same. (Lost light must be considered in the spherical light). In this tablea 3% watt oval filament lamp has been taken as a standard by which to com- pare the others. In burning lamps in Series it is necessary, in order to get good results, that each of 1 4 the lamps in any one series should be the same within three one-hundredths of an ampere. The Voltage may vary but the sum of the voltages in any series must be within three volts of the voltage of the circuit. If a lamp burns out replace with a lamp of the same voltage and amperes. When Ordering Series lamps to replace burned-outs always state the voltage and amperes of those in use, also voltage of circuit. Miniature Multiple. In ordering Multiple Sign and Candelabra lamps the voltage of the circuit should be specified. By following suggestions you will save trouble, delay and expense. GILMORE ELECTRIC Co.
