SHELLEY 4 CHEVAPOLELO Wiehe WN Te HE APOLLO is an indirect lighting unit with luminous bowl. About 17.5 of the light is transmitted downward through the bowl and 82.5 upward, softly and uniformly illuminating the ceiling. Heretofore, indirect lighting units have thrown a bright, well- . defined spot of light above them. The APOLLO is so designed that the uncontrolled light from the inner bowl is bent upward by the outer bowl and dissolves the edge of the spot made by the inner reflector. The result is a lighted area that softly fades until the walls are reached. In the past, lighting units of the luminous-bowl indirect type have employed dense absorbing mediums to keep the brightness of the bowl below permissible values. The combined action of the reflecting and refracting prismatic construction of the APOLLO Unit is to lower the brightness of the bowl to 2.6 candles per square inch without excessive absorption. The light which would ordinarily produce excessive brightness of the bowl is refracted to the ceiling. There is neither direct nor reflected glare from the unit due to its low intrinsic brilliancy. Its average brightness is similar to the ceiling so that there is no objectionable contrast but instead the unit blends with the surroundings. The APOLLO can be accommodated to varying sized rooms and different ceiling heights. For low ceilings and small rooms the ceiling unit should be used. For high ceilings and large rooms the canopy and holder can be separated, and a chain, cord or rod support of the proper length inserted. All glass surfaces exposed to the air are smooth. The space between the two bowls, shown in Fig. |, page 7 is sealed at the top with the white enameled diaphragm and at the bottom with the finial. The unit is thus, for all practical purposes, dustproof. The dust that may collect in the small cup formed by the inner bowl can be easily removed by first releasing a hook catch and then wiping the inner bowl with a damp cloth. Git APOLLO -s) The materials used in the manufacture of the APOLLO are permanent in their nature. There is nothing to deteriorate, nothing to rust, nothing to decay. A decade from now the APOLLO will be as efficient, and as good as when first installed. The advent of the APOLLO brings within reach of everyone the limitless possibilities of TINTED LIGHTING. By placing a color filter of sheer silk or some similar translucent material around the inner bowl the outer bowl can be beautifully and delicately tinted. Thus the soothing atmosphere of the rest- room and the hotel bedroom, the chic feeling of the dressmaker’s salon, the gay air of the cabaret, and the reverent dignity of the church can all be expressed more definitely by the use of the appropriate color filter in the APOLLO. To recapitulate, the APOLLO: 1. Lights the ceiling without objectionable spot or shadow effects, softly and comfortably. 2. Has the ideal distribution for indirect lighting, putting the light where it is wanted. 3. Is glareless. 4. Can be accommodated easily to varying sized rooms and different heights of ceiling. 5. All prismatic surfaces are sealed from contact with the air. All outside surfaces are smooth and easily cleaned. 6. Is made to stand up and give full performance continually. Is durable and permanent. 7. Is highly efficient—approximately 85%. 8. By the use of color filters and silk or parchment shades it permits expression of individuality. CHE APOLLO 9 GOUOR RIN SELGE TING AINTING with light” is a phrase that has recently achieved popularity in the lighting field. It has made articulate a feeling, a desire for the beautiful in lighting that has steadily grown for years. Until the advent of the APOLLO that desire could only be met in unsatisfactory ways. Today the APOLLO brings all the wealth of infinite atmospheres that the world of color puts at one’s command, into the every- day shop, the office and the home. The mistress of the house can exactly match her lighting furnt- ture with her household furniture. Whatever the color of her draperies, table covers, cushions or upholstery, that hue can be given to the APOLLO, and by the mistress herself. Should she decide to change the decorations of her home, to bring the APOLLO into harmony with her new color scheme all she has to do is to replace the old color filter with the proper new one. The lawyer, the physician, the architect and others whose offices have distinctive, individual appearances can all add greatly to the special purpose and appeal of their surroundings by the use of appropriately tinted APOLLOS. The milliner’s, the modiste’s; the candy-shop and the tea-room; the florist’s and the haberdasher all have a definite individual “air’’ to which the APOLLO can be exactly adapted so that one might say “it is born to its surroundings.” An additional, welcome refinement can be had in the use of silk or parchment shades, silk or metal fringes, metal or glass beads, or crystal ornaments suspended from the lip of the APOLLO in a way to exactly catch the spirit of the interior. /0 CHES ALOLEG APOLLO ACCESSORIES HE APOLLO lends itself to “decorative treatments.” The lip of the outer bowl forms a support upon which any ornamental embellishment on a wire frame can be hung. Thus, by dressing the unit with a silk or parchment shade, or silk tassels or fringes, or beaded loops, the little extra touch can be added to harmonize the unit with any interior.
