It has a pebbled surface admirably suited for painting, thus making wall-paper unnecessary. | It is made entirely of selected woods shredded to fibrous form and pressed into panels about 3 of an inch thick, and of various lengths and widths for all building requirements. It is pure-wood-fibre all the way through. It is equally adaptable for new walls or remodeling. In new work it is nailed directly to the studding and headers; for remodeling, it is nailed right over the old walls. In either case it makes a quick, clean job, free from the dirt, litter and delays of the lath, plaster and wall-paper method. Beaver Board is superior to lath and plaster because it never cracks or chips, never needs repairs, and is easily put up at any season. It retards passage of heat, cold and sound; and because it can be painted or tinted artistically, it makes rooms more wholesome, inviting and beautiful. Page Three Why You Should Use Beaver Board N° matter what kind of room you wish to complete or remodel, no matter what the type of building, or the time of year, or where you may be, you will find that Beaver Board makes permanent, as well as more beautiful and sanitary walls and ceilings. Beaver Board gives you absolutely permanent walls that never crack, chip or crumble, that can never fall, that never need repairs. Mr. Otto Burger of Fort Thomas, Ky., has used Beaver Board in every room in his home. Note the restful, comfortable air this living-room possesses. Designed by Department of Design and Decoration. Its cleanliness and convenience in application, the freedom from annoyance, delay and litter of repairs, the endless opportunity for attractive designs in panel- ing and decoration, all combine to make Beaver Board the material to be preferred above all others. Progress and improvements in building products make Beaver Board the modern wall and ceiling ma- terial. It has forty-one advantages—every one a reason why you should use it. Page Four Beaver Board is as perfectly adapted for the most beautiful and expensive buildings as it is for the modest home. The beauty of Beaver Board will appeal to you strongly. All who appreciate attractive surroundings will quickly realize the wonderful opportunity in panel- ing and decoration that Beaver Board offers. Beaver Board solves the prob- lem of beautiful interiors at moderate cost. Beaver Board design and decoration allow un- limited scope to ingenuity and artistic taste; yet you get not only beauty and originality with Beaver _ Board, but also a vast number of practical qualities. The illustrations in this booklet convey only an idea—the real charm, originality and harmony are merely suggested—for the rooms themselves must be seen to be appreciated. Making Sure of Satisfaction VERY Beaver Board job can“be a good jobmm the few simple rules governing Beaver Board construction are closely followed. For nailing to intermediate studding, use brads mentioned on page 28, not more than six inches apart. Smooth out the panels as you nail. Don’t) tail@to nail all edges of panels by using flat-head nails (as shown on page 28) every three inches around the panel. Use headers where the ordinary framework does not provide a nailing surface for panel edges. ‘These headers are supplied by nailing crosspieces between the studding or joists, and they should be of a thick- ness sufficient to make a rigid backing for the panel edges. ‘They must also be used behind top of base- board, chair-rail, plate-rail and picture moulding. Beaver Board over brick and cement walls is nailed to furring strips (%”" x 114%4"’) secured to wooden plugs previously wedged into the mortar. Finish the decoration of Beaver Board panels and allow the paint to dry thoroughly before applying the strips over the joints. Don’t use wall-paper. ‘The beautiful pebbled sur- face when decorated is not only more pleasing but more sanitary and lasting. See pages 22 and 23. And Beaver Board is appropriate for every room in the house. The endless opportunities for paneling and color treatment make each room different from the others, but all form one harmonious whole. In commercial and public buildings, attractive effects in paneling and coloring are easily obtained, making interiors that are original and beautiful. In new work it is nailed right to the studding and headers of the walls, and joists and headers of the ceiling, quickly, conveniently, without dirt or litter, and at any season of the year. The work is done in a fraction of the time that would otherwise be re- quired, thus saving days and often weeks in con- struction. Alterations desired later are easily made. It is difficult to get an accurate comparison between Beaver Board and lath and plaster, or metal, owing to the various prices prevailing for labor and material. Beaver Board never chips or cracks, never falls, and it lasts as long as the building. Its economy comes through its permanence. When Beaver Board isup, itis up to stay. ‘There is never any repair expense. In figuring the cost of Beaver Board for any room you include only the space actually to be covered. With plaster, the entire wall area, including openings, is figured on for material and labor. The space figured on for Beaver Board is aboyt 20% less. But no matter what the first cost of Beaver Board is, in the long run it proves most economical, and the satisfaction you get means more than the saving through the use of cheaper materials. Poge Fourteen Physical Properties of Beaver Board EAVER BOARD never cracks, chips or crumbles like plaster. This is due to the use of long, strong pure-wood-fibre, and to the pro- cesses of manufacture which give the finished product great toughness and strength, and just enough elasticity to allow ad- justment to changes of seasons. It withstands jarsand vibra- tion without injury. Shocks that bring plaster down in ruin never affect Beaver Board. For that reason it is used extensively where there is vibration from traffic or machinery. Beaver Board resists passage of heat and cold, thus making rooms warmer in winter and cooler in summer. Manning’s charming home, “Franwill Farm,” at Ballston Lake, Saratoga County, N. Y. In every room, even including the attic, Beaver Board has been used, and a harmony of design and decoration has been maintained throughout. Every room is different from the others in style of panel arrangement and color schemes, and yet there is a Page Sixteen paver Board Room harmonious blending of the whole which is seldom accomplished by the use of other wall and ceiling materials. And the freedom from repair worry—the knowledge that the walls and ceilings of every room will remain in perfect condition while the house stands—that there will be no wall-paper to put on and tear off— no cracked walls, no dirt and inconvenience, and no after-expense—these things combine to make the Beaver Board home a model home. Page Seventeen Beaver Board Makes Interiors Beautiful PANELING Rest of all it produces the panel effect, one of the oldest and at the same time most approved means of modern interior decoration. A wide expanse of blank wall is difficult of treatment and gives a stiff, cold and cheerless effect. Paneling allows variety and taste in design. A different effect may be had in each room and all rooms will be in perfect harmony. Panels may be of any required size and may be used with or without dado, frieze or wainscot. Decorative strips should be wide. They may be of any wood, stained or painted, depending upon the room, the nature of the furnishings or the effect desired. Beamed ceilings, too, so appropriate for dining and living-rooms, harmonize perfectly with Beaver Board paneling. In paneling alone, splendid opportunity is offered for good taste, originality and harmony. This dining-room in home of Mr. A. W. Flagel, Cranford, N. The expense and annoyance of frequent repapering, when walls are plastered, are thus eliminated by Beaver Board. Either oil or water paints or stains may be used. Flat and glaze finishes, mottled or stippled and sten- ciled effects, are all possible and easy to secure. Soft, restful tones are obtained with flat paints. Glaze colors can also be used with beautiful results, producing interiors of permanent beauty and cleanliness. It is important to nail every three inches along all four edges, putting headers behind top of baseboard, behind plate rail and picture moulding, and also to nail every six inches to intermediate studding. Use flat- head nails for edges and. brads for intermediate nailing. Leave space of 14 inch between panels. A panel should never be left partially nailed over night. After Beaver Board is up it should be decorated, and then the decorative strips, previously painted or stained, should be put over the joints. If instructions are followed a good job is assured, one that will be a lasting source of pride and satisfaction. How to Estimate Quantity of Beaver Board Required You must first know the distance between centers of your studding and between ceiling joists. This will guide you to the widths of Beaver Board required. For studding centered at 16 inches you can use 32- inch or 48-inch panels. For studding 18 inches on centers the 36-inch wide panels may be used, and for 24-inch centers the 48-inch panels. The length of wall panels depends upon the height of walls and the panel design to be adopted. Take the distance around the room, less the width of doors, windows and other openings, and divide the result by the width of the panel decided upon; this gives the number of panels required for walls. For the ceiling decide upon design suited to dimen- sions. Base width of panéls on distance between cen- ters of joists, and length of panels upon length of joists. Beaver Board can be arranged in any number of artistic and appropriate combinations for any size of room and type of building.
