There are many plans of construction for Steel Roofing now on the market—some of them very defective, and would not make a good roof, no difference how good the material might be. We shall not try to compete in price with them. By our continuous Cap and Sheet combination, there is but one side of the seam to open, instead of two, and on this, the lower edge is folded so as to conform to all inequalities in the sheeting, making it stronger and to remain more snugly in place. A folded edge so near the bottom of the seam is much better than the single or raw edges of a separate cap, which has a raw edge on each side of the seam, and which does not conform to the inequalities of the surface, which causes it sooner or later to Ge: e or bulge or loosen irregularly from the seam; also the end connections of such % Rav not perfect or substantial, and will, sooner or later, get out of order. with our improvement in cross seaming steel sheets, we can recommend | our Roofing to be used on a flatter surface than would be safe to use ANY OTHER steel roof not so constructed. . In comparing our samples with others, please examine the quality. of material closely. ‘Take the sample to pieces so as to see the construction and to help you deter- mine as to the merits of both material and plans of construction. No matter how good the material may be, if the plan of construction is bad, it will make a faulty and worthless roof. We not only GUARANTEE the plans of our roofs, but every foot of material in them, and request that it be returned, at our expense, if not found as represented. - Our prices will always be in harmony with the Steel and Iron market, and will be as low as our quality of goods can be furnished. er WRITE FOR SAMPLE. 4 J.«H.#ELLER & CO..%CANTON, OHIO. Steel Roofing Has proven itself by practical tests and comparison with other roofing materials to be the best for all general purposes, where a perfect protection from the elements, com- bined with durability and economy, are desired. The cheapness of steel, with our improved machinery for the manufacture of our roofing, enables us to offer our patrons the best roofing in use for the least money. All End Locks are made at our shops, and the roofing is put up in rolls 50 feet long, with a covering width of two feet, and will cover one square when laid; though when so ordered, we can cut strips any desired length to suit our customers. It is wrapped in heavy paper, secured by wire, which makes it convenient for handling. Combs and Hip Seams are more easily and neatly made with our roofs than by other plans. Our Roofing Seamers are fitted up especially for our Roofing; they do the work very rapidly, and make better seams than can be made otherwise or by any other plan. Flashings around Chimneys, Skylights, Hatchways, Firewalls and other places can be neatly and easily done with our Roofing. Painting. The material used for this coating is the best quality of Iron Oxide or Graphite Paint, ground in linseed oil, which are the most indestructible paints in use for metal roofing ; they adhere tenaciously and will not peel or blister. The construction of this roof is such as to warrant it wind-proof and water tight. The seams are double folded, making a continuous cap and sheet combination which conforms to all inequalities in the sheeting, with ample provisions for the expansion , and contraction of the metal. All cross seams are double-locked and are guaranteed not to become loose or come apart in handling. Our Flexible Double Cross-Lock. A Cross-Seam That Will Never Come Apart or Leak. Our manner of double locking the cross seams of our Roofing makes it the most desirable Steel Roofing in use. Cross seams constructed in this manner are guaranteed not to leak or come apart. The leaking of cross-seams of Steel Roofing on flat roofs is entirely overcome by the use of our Double Cross lock; therefore our Roofing can be used with safety on a flatter surface than is safe to use on any other Steel Roof. J.#H.%x#ELLER & CO.#CANTON, OHIO. IJ Our Anchor-Cap Steel Roofing. This Roofing we make of the same quality of Steel as our Lock-Seam Roof. It is a little cheaper, as it costs less to manufacture it. The construction of this roof is the best and most secure single folded Steel Roof in use. It is virtually a wind-proof roof. The Cleats being set on the wide up-turned edge of Roofing, secure it firmly to the sheathing or lath, so that in seaming it will not be raised from the sheathing by the seamers, but remain firm and solid on the roof boards or lath, thus preventing that vibration so common in most all other Steel Roofs. It can be laid either on lath three to six inches apart, or on sheathing or over old shingles. It is more easily put on over old shingles than any other Steel Roof that has ever been produced. KEasily attached to any kind of valleys or gutters. It forms its own comb and hip seams, and will be found complete in all respects. The Cleats for this Roofing are all made of Galvanized Steel and are formed complete, ready for nailing to the roof boards. Our Flexible Double Cross=-Locks. We carry in stock for prompt shipment 6, 7, 8, 8%, 9 and ro foot sheets. A square consists of six and one-fourth sheets, 8 feet long, with a covering width of 24 inches, or their equivalent in other lengths. We send free with each square a sufficient number of cleats already formed to put the roofing on with. We always ship nails and dry paint for a final coat with roofing unless otherwise ordered. Nails, 3 cents; dry paint, 2 cents per square. We paint this Roofing on both sides with the best Iron Ore paint, ground in pure Linseed Oil; or, if preferred by our customers, we will coat both sides with pure Graphite Paint, ground in oil, without extra cost. Weight per square, when packed for shipment, about 70 to 75 pounds. This roofing is very desirable for steep roofs as there are no edges to be turned, and as it is put on one sheet at a time, it is much easier managed on a steep roof than a continuous strip roofing, which reaches from comb to eave. With our printed instructions and our special tools for applying this roofing, almost any one can apply it. THE CLEATS as shipped with the roofing are formed ready for setting and should be spaced not over 16 or 20 inches apart, with two wire nails in the foot of each cleat. All our sheets are made to the United States Standard Gauges as adopted by Congress, March 3rd, 1893, and are guaranteed to be full weight. When the lengths and gauges are not specified in the order, we s/ip standard gauge shects, 8 feet long. We keep in stock sheets 6, 7, 8, 9 and ro feet long, of stan- dard gauge for prompt shipment. When heavier gauges are wanted, more time is required to fill the order. Galvanized Standard Gauge sheets are always kept in stock for prompt shipment. We also furnish heavier gauges on receipt of specifications. If there is any cutting for gables or any other parts, we must have accurate draw- ings or diagram filled out, showing size and space to be covered. For tall buildings, such as grain elevators, we recommend sheets three to four feet long, it being much more convenient to handle, and makes a much better siding for this purpose. How to Order. Much care should be taken in making out orders. It always delays shipments when orders are sent in that are not plain or complete, which compels us to hold them until we can write and find out just what is wanted and how it is wanted. Fill out order sheet carefully, which we send you, or the diagram in catalogue. Estimate how many sheets you need to cover the surface and what lengths will suit best and make the least cutting. Be sure to allow for end laps. If for roofing, allow 3 to 6 inches; if for siding, one inch is enough. The covering width of everything we make is two feet. Be sure to name everything in your order that you want, and how you want it. When corrugated sheets are used for roofing not less than two corrugations should be used for side laps. ‘There is always danger of leaks in the side laps where only one corrugation is used. We do not advise its use on a flat roof, but recommend our Standing Seam Steel Roofing, which will always be found satisfactory for this purpose. — JwtH.ELLER & CO.CANTON, OHIO. 25 We Corrugate by Pressure, Not by Rolls. This we furnish, made of Painted Steel or Galvanized Iron, as desired. A square consists of 8+ sheets, 60 inches long by 28 inches wide. DIRECTIONS FOR PUTTING ON Steel Brick Siding Over Wood Sheathing. Ist. Get the level of your building entirely around its base or top and strike a line corresponding thereto. 2nd. Place a full sheet of siding at one corner of the building, allowing the end to extend two or more feet past the corner, so that the cross grooves are imme- diately over the corner, the lower edge of the sheet resting on the chalk line. 3rd. Nail the sheet fast to the wall through the grooves sufficiently to hold it fast and bring it down solid all the way along. Begin at the middle of the sheet to nail and work towards ends and sides, putting nails two or three bricks apart. Never nail through the brick. 4th. Bend the projecting two feet around the corner with the bands or with a piece of board, using a mallet lightly to bring down any uneven places. Sth. Lay around the building until you meet the commencement. Place the first sheet of the second tier over the first so as to break joints perfectly, as in brick work, letting the half groove at the bottom of the sheet lap over the first and fit closely in the half groove at the top of the first sheet. 6th. Window and door frames should not be put in until after the siding is on. But in case the frames are in, the Steel Siding may be applied and faced at doors and windows the same as for wood siding. 7th. At windows or doors cut the sheets about three inches above the bottom sill, and the same distance from the side; then cut from the corner thus formed obliquely to the corner of the window or door space, bend the steel with the hands down upon the window sill and around the side of the studding, and nail it fast. The window frames fit in over these laps and show a complete brick finish. Use a %-inch wire barbed nail and drive through the grooves without the use of a punch, but always use a nail-set to drive nail home. Cost of nails for applying siding, 5 cents per square, and will be shipped with siding when so specified in the order. ‘jOOJ [Boul], ted eor1ig “VSE “ONT No. 355. This paint will not corrode under any circumstances, and is not affected by heat, acids, alkalies, sulphur, ammonia, chemical fumes, etc. é To secure the best results on any metal surface, one coat should be applied and allowed to stand a week or so before a second coat is applied. To insure the greatest protection a good heavy body of paint is required. If properly applied, it is a sure protection against rust or corrosion of any metallic surface, under any circumstances, or in any climate. As we manufacture it, it is tenacious and elastic and will not scale from any metallic surface. It conforms to the expansion and contraction of metals painted with it. For the convenience of our customers, we put it up in impervious wooden tubs, with handles, in any quantities up to barrel lots. Asphalt Roof Coating. For Tin, Iron, Wood or Felt Roofs, also Smoke Stacks, Tanks and Piping, Bridges, Brick, Stone and Cement Walls, Fences, Trestle Work, Architectural Iron, Boilers, Machinery, Gutters, Copings, Window Caps, Shutters, Fence Posts and all exposed surfaces, it is:equally serviceable. Put up in tubs same as above. Dry Iron Ore Paint. Our Iron Ore Paint is virtually a fire-proof paint. Ground very fine, will not crack, scale or fade; neither will it run in streaks nor settle in the bucket. It spreads well and always gives the best of satisfaction. It is extensively used for painting outside woodwork. Its lasting qualities make it especially adapted for iron, tin and shingle roofs. If not satisfactory, return at our expense, and we will cheerfully refund the money paid. J.#H.#ELLER & CO.#CANTON, OHIO. 47 READY MIXED IRON OXIDE PAINT, To better protect our Roofing and customers from the use of the impure and adul- terated mixed paints now on the market, we have been induced to put up in convenient sized impervious kits a mixed paint made of Iron Oxide, ground in pure Linseed Oil. The market is now flooded with cheap, worthless, mixed paints. We caution our customers against their use. They are well calculated to deceive any one not acquainted with the mixture of paint. They have no virtue and are worth nothing for the protection of Metal Roofs. One gallon of our mixed paint will spread a good coat over four hundred square feet. It will last and protect the surface. The labor of laying is the same; the three ply is always the cheapest in the end. Put up in rolls containing 108 sguare feet, wrapped and labeled with directions for putting on. EACH ROLL WILL COVER 100 SQUARE FEET. Directions for Laying our Prepared Roofing. The roof boards should be dry, of uniform thickness, and laid close together. Cover all knot holes with pieces of tin, and sweep clean of nails, chips, etc. In nailing roofing commence at the eaves or gutter (if there be any) and lay the first piece parallel with the edge and close to it. Nail the Jower edge with 11-inch barbed wire roofing nails every two inches, using the tin caps (see cut No. 2). Always begin in the center of roof and nail toward the edge. Let the second sheet lap over the first, two inches, be sure to thoroughly coat between the Japs with our ASPHALTUM CEMENT. Then nail as before, repeating thus until the roof is covered. Nall well along the edges, and be careful to make proper fastenings around chimneys, &c., as per Fig. 4. Where there are coping, walls, chimneys, etc., let the roofing run to the angle (as in Figs. 3 and 4) and finish with a separate strip of roofing, six or eight inches wide, lapping one- J = half on the roof and the other on the icin wat. Secure the top edge to wall by Fig: 3. nailing wood strip over the same and cementing it well to prevent water from getting back of it. 52 J.»H.2ELLER & CO.#CANTON, OHIO. Black Diamond Roofing Laid Over Old Shingles. Our Black Diamond Roofing can be used for re- covering old shingle roofs. We recommend for this purpose our Three-ply. Before covering the shingles, sweep them off clean and nail down all that are loose or badly warped. When the shingles have edges projecting, saw them off to make a smooth even surface. Take care to drive the nails where they will hold well. Avoid walking on the roof as much as possible. It is best to use a ladder fastened at the edge. In putting in valleys we recommend that not less than 15 or 20 inch valleys be used and that the roofing be lapped on the a valleys not less than 4 to 6 inches as per Fig. 6. We take pleasure in presenting our Patent Chimney Ventilator, or Foul Air Shaft Ventilator. ‘The Hood of the Ventilator revolves with every slight change in the wind, thereby always holding the back or crown of the Hood against the wind. Combined with its peculiar construction an upward suction is formed on top of the chimney. The wind or rain can never blow down into the chimney, hence the smoke is also prevented from doing so. It is an indispensable article when it is desired to ventilate a building through a cold ventilating or foul air shaft, as it is always sure to create a draft upward in the shaft. Special attention of furnace men is called to above Ventilator. A Sure Cure for a Smoky Chimney, or a Sluggish Working Ventilating Shait. Complete as we ship them out. Construction of Iron Frame. It has merits that need only to be seen to be appreciated. Is simple in construc- tion, made of the best material, put together by mechanics skilled in tbis specialty. A strong air pressure makes it a perfect blast furnace, producing a clear, blue flame entirely devoid of smoke or dirt, and having an intensity of heat hardly credible. No wind is heavy enough to extinguish the flame, and the furnace is so compact and light that it is especially adapted for tak- ing out on jobs. Note This.—Particular attention is called to the fact that with No. 1 Fire Pot akettle of solder or lead can be kept hot enovgh to wipe joints and at the same time, without removing kettle from the fire, there is sufficient room and heat to keep soldering irons ready for use. It will heat all the Fi metal and soldering coppers two men can use at the same time. There is No. 1 Fire Pot. no other fire pot made that can do this. Bearitin mind when purchasing a Price, complete, net, $6.00 Furnace. Gq Our ‘‘Special’’ For Tinners or Plumbers. We are furnishing this Fire Pot to meet the demand for a good, service- able Fire Pot at a low price. The “ Special’’ is exactly like the No. I, ex- cept that the burner will be a little smaller and not quite so strong, but will still be better than any other on the market. The tank, while smaller and different in shape from the No. 1, is still plenty large to hold gasoline enough to run for ten hours and is well built. No. I Torch. For Plumbers and Tinners’ Use. This Torch is used by leading mechanics everywhere and cannot be equaled for convenience, power, durability and economy in fuel. The burner hangs on a movable joint and works equally well in any position. It has clean out plugs and is therefore easily kept in order. It has the strongest blast, the hottest fire and the most of it of any Torch made. The flame is easily governed, enabling the operator to get heat enough to braze, or as : : much less as desired, and it will not blow out, no matter how strong the No. 1 Torch. seta Price, complete, net, $4.00 Tinners’ Charcoal Fire Pots. STAMPED METAL CEILINGS. Pune —ELEGANT DESIGNS. THE MOST DURABLE AND HANDSOME CEILINGS IN USE. We wish to call the attention of Architects, Builders, Contractors and Busi- ness Men to the use of Sheet Steel as an inside finish for ceilings, wainscotings, etc., and all interior decorations. This material, made up in appropriate designs, is fast supplanting the old-fashioned lath, plaster and wood ceilings. It pos- sesses the very essential advantages of beauty, durability and fire-proof qualities. We are producing some very handsome designs which are comparatively in- expensive. They are suitable for all kinds of buildings, such as storerooms, factories, offices, asylums, hospitals, churches, colleges, school-houses, etc. They supply a much needed want in building material, in places where plastered ceilings are unsuitable on account of their cracking and falling off, and liability to become detached by motion of machinery, or any other cause that produces jarring or concussion upon the floor above. But, over and above these, is its intrinsic value as a fire-proof protection against the spread of fire in a building. We fit these ceilings up for any sized room, when accurate drawings and measurements are sent us. The drawings must show all angles and offsets in the ceiling, also all chandeliers and drops.
