DAVID E. KENNEDY COMPANY ING@ORPORATED * a>, by Dayip bE. Nuwn EV 7EeRsL7 AUS aie Tei ie tO 2Osha SOOT UUW DU WLLL LULL UL ULL UML USM MULL ULL LLL LL ULLAL MLA LULL ULLAL ULL AULA LULA AULA LULA LULL OT HE floor is the single surface of a building, inside or outside, that is subjected to traffic and dirt and that comes in contact with moving objects. It is the only part of the building that, literally, is wsed. Its function is wtility as well as appearance. The utility of hard, slippery, uncomfortable floors—hardwood, marble, tile, terrazzo, concrete, etc.—is question- able. These hard materials are often appropriate in appearance, but their physical characteris- tics disqualify them for floors, upon which one should be able to walk with a feeling of security and without noise or distraction and to stand at ease without fatigue. Certainly a floor that is capable of a wider artistic and architectural treatment than any of these materials; that will retain its original appearance under severe conditions; that is easy to clean and to keep clean; that is impervious to dirt and traffic; that is soft, resilient, comfortable to tired feet, backs, nerves; that one can walk upon with a feeling of security; that deadens distract- ing noises ;—such a floor is incomparably superior to the conventional flooring materials that have been used through custom rather than through reason. Everlastic Tiles are a composition of which cork is the basic ingredient. Cork is recognized as a wonderfully durable and elastic flooring material, and it is the cork of which they are mainly composed that gives to Everlastic Tiles their great wear-resisting quality and their soft, pleas- ant and secure foothold. Under foot these tiles are as soft and quiet as carpet, yet they are as sanitary and non-absorbent as glazed tile. Everlastic Tiles would be sufficiently distinguished by the beauty of their color and texture were they marked by these qualities alone. Just as they add beauty to a room, so they add utility. These characteristics combined with permanency make them distinct among all floors. Fverlastic Tile is so durable that it has been adopted by the Otis Elevator Company as a stand- ard flooring for their elevator cars. As an instance of its durability, we refer to the Everlastic Tile Floor in the Gray Drug Store at Forty-third Street and Broadway, New York, the photograph of which is on page 33 of this book. It has received seven years of severe and concentrated traffic intensified by the circumstance that the entrance to the Times Square station of the subway is through this store. A continuous throng passes over this floor night and day. It is in splendid condition to-day and good for many years more. Everlastic Tile Floors give all the advantages of carpet, with none of its drawbacks. Everlastic Tile Floors give all the advantages of marble, with none of its drawbacks. Everlastic Tile Floors can be laid on any smooth surface—wood, concrete, metal, composi- tion, hard tile, marble, etc. This is of particular interest to owners of buildings with existing wood or composition floors that require something better. Everlastic Tile Floor in Italian Room of the House Palatial. HE wide and unusual decorative possibilities afforded to the designer by Everlastic Floors are here indicated. The large, black slabs of Everlastic are a delightful reminder of the floors in vogue in Italian palaces of this period and style. What other material in dull black slabs, capable of being laid over a wood floor, could have filled so perfectly the unusual requirements of this interesting room? The design color plates shown on the following pages are generally reproductions of the designs used in the accompanying photographs. Where the same design is shown with another photograph, a color plate of a different design is shown as a suggestion. Strip borders only are shown in most of the color plates. Both interlocking and square tile can be furnished in any color or combination of colors. Dee A D> we. ok EN NSE DY COMPANY 3 EV. Everlastic Tile on Ground Floor. Hutchins and French, Architects. Plate No. 78 = HE floor for the large department store is probably the toughest problem of all. The vast areas and enormous traffic make economy and durability vital factors. To obtain with these qualities a floor of attrac- tive appearance that is soft and restful to the tired shoppers and that through its very silence under the tread of the crowds imparts a sense of luxury, would seem beyond reason- able expectation. Everlastic Tile possesses these qualities and, excepting wood, it is the least expensive flooring that can be obtained for the modern department store. ee ate RE Ee A st 2 ee 2 ede PO) a ee ere Dee Dt ROE NN-E DY COM PAN Y 5 BE’ Ve ER.
