INLAID & PRINTED LINOLEUM | 1917 | COLMAN LEVIN © CO. is oe BOSTON, MASS. LINOLEUM & PRO-LINO Plant of The Nairn Linoleum Co., Kearny, N. J. The Nairn Linoleum Co. Newark, N. J. AVERY LIBRARY RY COLUMBIA UNI VeEpeiry INVA TREN ED: lee ie NG Ready Reference Edition In this book will be found an illustration of every design in the Nairn 1917 line. The patterns shown are classified under the various Nairn grades, each one of which is the highest standard of linoleum manufactured. The necessity of manufacturing a number of grades of linoleum is due to its various requirements, as for example, in public places where hard and constant traffic exists, the heaviest and best grade is used, while in the nursery or bedroom, a linoleum of lighter weight will be sufficient. The quality enters greatly into the situation of economy. The lowest price linoleum is not necessarily the cheapest. Experience conclusively proves that the best is usually the most economical. WHAT IS LINOLEUM? Every salesman should know how the goods he sells are made. Perhaps you already know how in the manufacture of Nairn Linoleum the pure linseed oil (from which the name linoleum comes) is oxidized in the air until it becomes thick and elastic, like rubber; how it is mixed with ground cork, coloring matter and other materials and how this ‘‘mix” is spread out on burlap and the whole passed under steel rollers that give many tons pressure. The mixture is forced between and around the strands of the burlap making the whole one piece. The tough, wiry nature of the jute yarn from which burlap is woven makes it the very best material to use as a backing for linoleum. Linoleum, there- fore, is a layer of cork bound together into a pliant, resilient mass by means of linseed oil and backed to give it strength by tough burlap. GRADES Lino.eums, such as Inlaid and heavy Plain grades, will naturally give a service impossible to get from a printed linoleum. The Straight-line, Plain-tile Nairn Inlaids are made by an ex- clusive Nairn process that has never been successfully imitated. That process assures a uniformity of quality and design that can be absolutely depended upon to give the utmost satisfaction. Nairn Straight-line, Plain-tile Inlaid linoleum will give better service than mottled or mould Inlaid linoleum of the same thickness. DIFFERENCE BETWEEN INLAID AND PRINTED LINOLEUMS EXAMINATION of the raw edges of an inlaid and a printed grade will show why an inlaid linoleum will wear longer than a print. In the former you will see a thick layer of linoleum with the colors uni- form from surface to back. This thick layer is resilient under foot and must wear down to the burlap back before its usefulness is gone and its appearance spoiled. In printed linoleum there is a layer of material over the burlap and the surface of this material is printed with an oil paint in various designs. ‘The pattern will last only as long as it takes to wear through the printed surface. Every salesman, consequently, should point out to a purchaser the economy of inlaid over printed linoleums, not only in the wear that they give but in the retention of their good appearance. LINOLEUM IS ADAPTABLE TO EVERY ROOM TuHereE are few rooms in the house in which Nairn Linoleum will not be entirely appropriate. In fact, the custom so prevalent in Europe of covering all floors with linoleum is growing rapidly in this country and should be encouraged. In this book are six illustrations which show how appropriate the proper linoleum is for every room in the house. Instead of your customers having to paint floors before laying down rugs, suggest the much more satis- factory method of laying linoleum. It will be more expensive than the paint, of course, but the painted surface soon wears through in spots where the rugs do not cover, and the floor becomes unsightly. Painted surfaces, too, become dingy and dusty. Cracks between the floor boards collect dirt and make cleaning much harder. Linoleum borders are much more satisfactory in every way than painted floors. Linoleum is sanitary, it being absolutely germ- proof, as has been demonstrated by scientific research. Most customers do not think of these points. The old custom of painting floors still prevails to some extent. Point out the advantage of the new idea and greater sales of linoleum will result. NAIRN SERVICE Ar convenient centers throughout the country are located Nairn Warehouses in which are large stocks of Nairn Linoleums. From these warehouses will be shipped small or large quantities with equal promptness. Orders received by three o’clock will be shipped out the same day.* *The only exception to the above is Galveston. The office is at Dallas and orders received there must be sent to Galveston for execution which requires an extra day. Goods should be allowed to stretch for ten to fourteen days before refitting and tacking. No tacking is required around the edges of the room as the moulding on the base-board will hold the linoleum in place and will also allow of expan- sion or contraction. This precaution will prevent any tendency to buckle or crack. The best method of fasten- ing down the linoleum perma- nently on wooden or cement floors is to use a good make of water-proof cement made for this purpose. Let the base- board moulding take care of sides next the walls. Apply the cement with a paint brush along the seams. Heavy weights should be laid on these and left for twenty-four hours at least, to allow for thorough drying and setting. Sometimes, cementing the entire back of the linoleum will give better satisfaction. Both the floor and the linoleum back should receive a coat of cement. When the cement starts to set, lay the linoleum in place and weight the entire surface with bags of sand. Concrete floors should be well cleaned and the above method used. About 1 gallon of cement will be needed for 12 square yards of linoleum. Cementing seams and edges only will take but half this quantity for the same surface. Wherever it is practicable, as in private houses, the floor should first be planed smooth and the holes and cracks filled. This prevents excessive wear on uneven places. The floor should also be dry. Fasten the edges down with No. 18-34’ brads, spaced about 3 inches apart. HOW TO CARE FOR LINOLEUM HAnpte it carefully. Do not allow the rolls or cases to fall, as cracking will result. The rolls should be kept standing on end unless the linoleum is very wide when they can be laid flat; care should be taken that nothing heavy is piled on them. In cold weather, immediately upon delivery, see that the linoleum is put into a dry, warm place. Never attempt to unroll or open linoleum while it is chilled from exposure. The rolls should never be placed in damp cellars nor against steam pipes or radiators. Many of the complaints against manufacturers of linoleums arise from careless and stupid handling in stores and warehouses. 61 List of Patterns | Carried in Chicago, Kansas City, St. Louis, Galveston, Denver and _ Pacific Coast Warehouses x Designates warehouse at which pattern is carried * Send orders to Dallas office ‘2 o 5 ¢ 3 ¢ 3 a =D A CnD Grade and Pattern } Or g 5 ad Grade and Pattern OR § q Sipe) to Qs 7 & |oag ms 2 & Ing q gs |Ga} 2 | & jn q ~ 2 1es] 2 | 2 |ass svi a| 8 |835 Oo |Mal oO A JaAw Mal oO Q Jar NEWARK INLAID DSON SC gee Quality sc 3 se - oe 1 ag NOLbUM Cont'd.
