HOTEL FIRE ALARM AND ROOM CALL. See Cut, page 7. Nothwithstanding all that science and building skill have done during the past few years in the better and safer construction of hotels, there is nothing so much dreaded alike by landlord and guest as fire. The many hotel fires in the last few years, with their startling record of lives lost and property destroyed, show conclusively that the most careful watchfulness on the part of the landlord and assistants is not sufficient to prevent their almost periodical occurrence. Inventive genius has done much, by the introduction of stand-pipes and fire escapes, to lessen the danger in case of fire, but until the introduction of our IMPROVED HOTEL FIRE ALARM, no absolutely reliable means had been invented for automatically arousing every sleeping guest in a burning hotel, no matter how large the structure. The cut represents our Improved Hotel Fire Alarm and Room Call Appa- ratus, which is placed in the office. In each room of the hotel there is a bell, which is connected with the series of push buttons shown in the cut. By simply releasing a lever or arm, the bell in every room is rung twice during each revolution of the lever, and the revolutions continue until long after every guest has safely left the burning building. This system, on account of its ingenigus and reliable construction, can always be depended upon as a fire alarm. No large battery is required to operate it, and its daily use as a Room Call is a constant test of its readiness for use in case of fire. AS A ROOM CALL. The value of this system is not alone in its capacity as a reliable fire alarm. With it, the clerk can instantly answer the call of an impatient guest; can call a guest at any hour, thus avoiding the necessity of sending the porter to rousea sleeping guest by pounding on the door, to the annoyance of the occupants of adjoining rooms; or can ascertain at once if a guest is in his WESTERN ELECTRIC COMPANY. 8) room by simply pressing the button on the Fire Alarm Dial corresponding to the room he desires to call. Our apparatus is so arranged that the call bells in the rooms will give but a single tap when used as a call, and ring as vibrating bells when operated as a fire alarm. : The advantages of our system are as follows: First—Only five or six cells of battery are necessary to operate all the bells in the largest hotel. This feature is of great importance. A system that requires from fifty to one hundred and fifty cells of battery is liable to be neglected, and in a large house it is almost impossible to test the alarm without disturbing the guests. ° Second—aAs only one series of wires is required for the Annunciator and Fire Alarm, a great saving in first cost and also in maintenance is thus assured. Third—lIt is the only system in operation where distinct and separate action of the bells is secured—when used as a call, or as a fire alarm. Fourth—As no large and expensive battery is required, and no duplicate series of wires necessary to be kept in repair, it is therefore economical. Fifth—The fire alarm and lines are tested every time a call is made, either to or from the rooms ; hence it is reliable. Sixth—Our system can be connected to the nearest fire-engine house, giving the fire department instant notice when the fire alarm is operated. We make our apparatus in two forms, as shown in the illustrations. The combined Annunciator and Fire Alarm Dial makes an elegant piece of office furniture. Where the Annunciator is already in operation we make the Dial as shown in the small cut. We connect our system to any make of Electric Annunciator without the necessity of running a new series of wires. We will be pleased to correspond with hotel proprietors and others interested in regard to our apparatus. 10 WESTERN ELECTRIC COMPANY. a ! fi i IN =a No. 502. >= DINING KOOM CHINACLONT © PARR rd coe og | i} ’ FRUNTVESTIENE UBRARY SmtiNICRDOM \W} | sn eo <2 |||! | a ATI tition Coo i tna No. 503. We manufacture three different styles of Electric Bells: Skeleton, Iron Box and Wooden Box; the skeleton being used for the larger and the box for the smaller sizes of gongs. We spare no expense to make them durable and reliable, and to their superiority we attribute much of the success that has attended their use in the past. We call particular attention to our new Iron Box Bell No. 1006, and to our new Wood Box Bell No. 51244. These we can recommend for use where a low-priced bell is wanted. In cases where the sound of the bell would be louder than desired, we recommend our Buzzer, which produces a humming or buzzing sound, and does not attract the attention that the bell would. Our Turtle Gong and Electro-mechanical Gong are specially designed for loud calls in large halls, at railroad crossings, and for fire alarm purposes, and being thoroughly made, are perfectly reliable. FOR PUBLIC BUILDINGS, HALLS, THEATRES, CHURCHES, ETC. rQHE Central Apparatus manufactured by us consists of an induction coil with key and circuit breaker, a double bi-chromate battery and a circuit switch, all conveniently placed in a finely finished black walnut case. The induction coil we make to meet the requirements of each order, and it is so constructed that there is no likelihood of annoyance from the jumping of the spark. Instead of the automatic circuit breaker we use a hand key. In this way the time for applying the spark is completely under the control of the attendant. The battery is durable, inexpensive to maintain, and requires but little attention. The elements are mounted on hard rubber disks, and can be raised and lowered as desired. The switch is mounted on hard rubber base, securing the high insula- tion which is necessary to keep the electric spark within bounds. The burner consists of a lava standard and tip, with platinum-pointed electrodes placed over the tip. The electrodes of the different burners of a group are connected in series to the switch and the Central Apparatus, so that the spark passes across all the burners of a group. Prices on Application. OUR IMPROVED RATCHET RUTOMATIG. (See inside view herewith. ) The S. M. Ratchet Automatic No. 4, has recently been materially improved by dispensing with the soft iron base, the contact cam, the rubber bridge, one German silver and two steel springs. In place of the cam, the burner now has two platinum pointed brass pins, which are driven into the gas plug ex- tension. A brass base is substituted for £a (: the soft iron one, and a small rubber in- > Ga sulating block furnishes a foundation for the connection screws. Two flat springs of German silver attached to this block make connection with the brass pins in the gas plug extension, as the ratchet- wheel revolves. The current passes through but one coil of the magnet at a time, but energizes both poles. The two coils are energized alter- nately for lighting and extinguishing the gas. The simplicity of the improved burner is greatly in its favor, and the positive reliability of the contacts is an important advantage. The peculiar winding renders a comparatively weak current effective in its operation. Patents for these improve- ments pending. This burner will be known as ‘‘The Im- ———— : proved Ratchet Automatic No. 4 1-2,’’ and TNO both the old and new styles will be kept in yy i \ stock and sold at the same price. A single push-button both lights and extinguishes the burner. Two of the Triumph Automatics can be placed on a fixture wired for one ordinary automatic, and wires for “pendant” burners can be utilized by simply connecting in a push-button between battery and burner. | It lights instantaneously, and vibrates while the finger remains on the button ; a second pressure of same button extinguishes the gas without vibra- tion. Its operation is positive, the electric impulse being sure to leave the gas-way wide open or entirely closed. It is simple in construction, does not easily get out of order, requires only minimum battery power, is a third smaller than automatic burners in general use, and unites the highest degree of simplicity, safety, and efficiency. What does it signify? Well, less cost and better results to the contractor. Besides the saving in wire and push-buttons or keys the trade price of the burner is much less than for old-style automatics. This Automatic is adjusted to work on five or six cells of Leclanche or Improved “Law Prism” Batteries. Every burner is carefully tested by practical use, and put in perfect working order before it leaves our salesrooms. If an Automatic fails to operate satisfactorily, the trouble is very likely to be found in the wiring, battery connections or engineering of the job. It is oftener the result of rough handling or indis- criminate turning of the adjusting screws, twisting of electrodes, thumping of armature, etc. If, how- ever, the burner has from any cause become in- operative, and you are unable readily to locate and remove the difficulty, it is generally better to return it to us than to attempt to adjust or repair it. Ad- vise your customers not to handle or tinker the burners. 76 WESTERN ELECTRIC COMPANY. ELECTRIG HAND-LIGHTING GAS BURNERS. THE SIMPLE ARGAND BURNER No. 16. The Tip-Top Ratehet Burner, No. 7, differs materially in construction from No. 3, but is operated in the same manner by means of a pending chain. In it are em- bodied several improvements of value, and it 8 is a remarkably fine worker, which gives the most general satisfaction of any ratchet bur- ner made. One great advantage is that it always lights under the first pull. @!It has recently been improved by dividing the pillar to enable the user to get at and regulate the flame check; and the retractile spring has been so arranged, in connection with the ratchet, as to prevent the possibility of the wheel returning with the movable arm after the gas is lighted. Patented June 10, 1873; August 8, 1876; Jan’y 11, Sept. 14 and 28, 1880; and April 7, 1885. No. 7. THE DOUBLE CONTACT RATCHET BURNER, No. 11, is similar in style to No. 7, though it has a doubly sure connection of the movable arm with the body of the burner, and thence to the ground, which removes a difficulty that often causes trouble in the use of electric gas-lighting apparatus. Under this method the German silver wipe-spring is thrown out of the flame on its return to position after making and breaking contact at the burner tip. It will doubtless interest electriv contractors to find a burner whose movable electrode cannot be held in the flame “ just for fun,” until it is softened, and so robbed of its tension. This new burner electrode is notlifted over and through the flame, but under and out of the flame. Our burner arm is arranged not only to avoid sparking or catch- ing on the way back to its normal position, but the wipe-spring is preserved and a more positive ground provided. Cut shows the vibrating arm returning after the lighting is accomplished, with its spring point turned away from the fixed electrode and out of the 04 Wy ocesttateatatneciote OY flame.
