Our aim in presenting this circular to the public, and particularly to
Architects, Civil Engineers, Contractors, Manufacturers, Mill Owners,
Builders, Trustees of Schools and Public Buildings, and in fact all who
may be interested in what this book contains, is to try and bring before
them the great saving our method of applying our Ventilating Fan to the
different lines herein shown.
Many places, such as Bleacheries, Dye Houses, Hat Shops, Acid Works,
Chemical Works, etc., are troubled with steam to such an extent that it
makes work injurious, as well as damaging to the goods, We have suc-
cessfully removed steam from these places, and can refer to many who
have been relieved.
Thousands of factories are troubled with dust, hot air, acid fumes, smoke
and steam, and many can save hundreds of dollars by obtaining relief from
these annoyances,
We can save from 20 to 50 per cent, in drying all kinds of goods, which
will make a handsome profit to any house having large quantities of goods
to be dryed, both in space occupied and labor saved in handling,
We will endeavor to show in this circular a few of the many ways our
Patent Exhauster is now being practically used, but as every case differs
somewhat, we always prefer to furnish special plans, and when desired
superintend the work, or take full contract for everything, guaranteeing
the results. :
We ask all who contemplate the use of a fan, for any purpose whatever,
to write us before buying. It will cost you very little to write, and we may
save you many -ollars,
Very Respectfully,

re
Newark, N. J., U.S. A. 3
The above cuts show how Fans with curved blades will collect dust in the
hollow formed by the curve, which can readily be seen would be greatly
against them in places where dust is to be removed, and even when using
them for other purposes, they tend to retard the motion of the air, which
proves a curved blade to be a great disadvantage.
Our Patent Blades
Are formed in every way so as to cut the air quickly and perfectly clea,
giving it nearly as large an impulse at the centre as at the outside diameter.
The Band and Blades are made of the best P. C. Steel, and arms of the
strongest Ulster Iron. The bearings are lined with Bronze Metal, and the
arms are driven into the hub on a slight taper, and held in position by a
Stubb Steel Pin running through the hub and riveted on both ends.
Our Blades Cannot Become Loose,
AND WILL NOT BREAK OFF.
This cut shows the advantages of our Patent Blade over all others, and
you can readily see that only a sharp edge cuts the air, which ayoids the
extra power required to drive the bulge or belly of any curved blade, and it
cannot catch the dust. Compare this with cut at the top.

A TESTIMONIAL FROM ONE WHO HAS HAD SOME EXPERIENCE.
Kansas City, Mo., Nov. 16, 1886.,
Backus Water Motor Co., ér7 Main St.
GENTLEMEN.—The Patent Exhaust Fan which I bought from you has
proved itself to be far superior to the other style of Fan which I have been using in an~
other part of my building. Your Exhauster seems to give wonderful results, and exhausts
enormous volumes of air, as well as freeing my place from all flies.
Yours very truly,

BACK-LASH, ILLUSTRATED.
SHOWING WHY OUR PATENT BLADE GIVES SUCH WONDERFUL
RESULTS.
AIG 4 Exw.2.
~ BACK-LASEH.”
Figure 1 illustrates air current propelled from a rapidly revolving Fan of
the ordinary type. As will be seen, its greatest propelling force is at the:
periphery of the circle, described by the blades in their revolutions.
All the blades extending full length from shaft to end, and, therefore,
being crowded together near shaft, it is impossible to a a current of air
through or near the centre of Fan equal to that of its periphery. Fully
one-third of the diameter of the Fan is thus rendered practically ineffectual
as an air propeller. By the rapid revolution of these blades a vacuum is
formed, like that caused by any swiftly passing compact body, and the at-
mosphere, seeking to fill the vacuum, rushes back (as indicated by arrows),
thus causing what is termed the ‘‘ Back-Lash.”’
In the BAcKus FAN (See fig. 2), such a defect is impossible. Half the
blades are double, while the remainder extend but half way down the spoke.
This arrangement allows much more space near the shaft for the air current,
which, being caught by the lower half of double blade, is propelled with
velocity nearly equal to that at the fan’s periphery, and the advantage of
the Backus PATENT BLADE over the ordinary type is apparent.
THE BACKUS EXHAUSTER CAN BE DRIVEN AT A HIGH RATE
OF SPEED WITHOUT DANGER.

The cuts shown on this page illustrate how our Fan can be put up with or without the
use of thelegs, The frame is made with bolt holes, all ready for screw or lag bolts, so that
the Fan can be placed in a frame, wall, partition, or ceiling, or put ona shelf or bracket as
most convenient. The legs can be removed in a moment, and when it is desired to run it
horizontally, we allow the end of the shaft to run in a socket, which tends to stiffen it, as
well as hold its weight.

Newark, N. J.,.U. S. A. 15
THE VENTILATION OF
Theatres, Schools, Churches,
Public Buildings, Hospitals, Hotels, Xc.,
IS BEING ACCOMPLISHED BY
THE BACKUS PATENT EXHAUSTER.
A FEW POINTS TO CONSIDER.
We desire to call the attention of ARCHITECTS, CONTRACTORS, BUILDERS,
HOTEL PROPRIETORS, SCHOOL BOARDS, and all COMMITTEES or INDIVID-
UALS who may have the control or management of Public Buildings, to only
a few positive facts in connection with bad ventilation, which will prove
clearly the great need of a perfect system.
Death rates have been reduced by the introduction of proper ventilation
in general Hospitals, (including children), from 50 to 5 per cent., in Army
Hospitals from 23 to 6 per cent., in Prisons from 8o to 8 per cent., and in
Stables from 19 to 1.5 per cent.
These are facts taken from Prof. S. H. Woodbridge, of the Massachusetts
Institute Technical, Boston, Mass. We feel the above facts to be the strong-
est argument in favor of proper ventilation, and the best authorities advise
from 30 to 65 cubic feet of air per head per minute, under general conditions,
and in rooms continuously occupied ; and we do not consider any architect
should prepare plans on a lower basis.
Some of the largest Steam Heating and Ventilating Engineers in New
York and other large cities, have adopted the BacKUS PATENT EXHAUSTER
in connection with the system of heating and ventilating, combined by in-
direct radiation, which is known to be the only perfect means for properly
heating and ventilating Public Buildings, Factories, &c.
We are always ready to furnish plans, specifications, or any information,
guaranteeing results if carried out as per our instructions.
NOTE.
We having just completed a system of ventilation in the HOTEL
BUCKINGHAM, 50th St. and 5th Ave., New York City, and the
HOTEL LIVINGSTON, Rochester, N. Y., we take pleasure in refer-
ring to these places.

The Backus Eleetric Motor.
EFFICIEN CY 75 PER CENT.
Construction ; The bearings are of nickel bronze, interchangeable. The shaft is
of the best tool steel. The armature is perfectly balanced, balanced by the process known
as ‘a running balance.” At the right will be noticed a hand wheel, for tightening or loos-
ening the belt. The boxes are self-oiling, and o o7z7 can work out of the machine.
Electrical Features: This part has been given great attention, its insulation being
perfect ; water or dampness will have little or no effect.
Interlocking Starting Attachment: Mostof the Motors now on the market
require aresistance box over the Motor, and, asa rule, ¢hree wires run from this to the
Motor, and in some cases fouv. A machine of this construction must be set up by an ex-
pert. The Backus Electric Motor requires but two connections, and it makes no differ-
ence in which binding post the wires are inserted; any person can connect this Motor. Our
Motor cannot be injured by carelessly turning on the current, and cannot burn out by any
failure of the fusible plug. Our Interlocking Mechanism prevents any accidents.
Automatic Regulation: The speed will remain practically constant under all
variations inthe load up to its guaranteed horse power. Our Arc Light Motors are sup-
plied with a most sensitive governor, which gives perfect regulation.
’ DIRECTIONS FOR ORDERING MOTORS.
State the electric motive force, (7. e. volts), for constant potential Motor, and the current,
(i. e. amperes). for arc light circuits. Unless otherwise ordered, all Motors willbe sent out
self-regulating, that is running at practically a constant speed up to its guaranteed horse
power. If it is desired to vary the speed, we must know this when parties order. A card is
sent with each machine, giving full particulars for setting, which, if followed, the result
will be guaranteed.

INSTRUCTIONS?
By the use of a smali awl, feel through the plaster at about the point
where the fan is to go for a beam, then bore a hole slightly smaller than the
lag-bolt ; next put the bolt through the crab first, then the wood base ; af-
ter screwing it partly in, put the hanger up and tighten the bolt, allowing
the socket in the foot of the crab to fit over the small ball on the leg of the
hanger. After getting it level by driving small wedges under the base put
the shaft through ; place the pulley on the shaft, as shown on pages 24, 25,
26, 27 and 28, first fill the cups which are cast on the hangers full of grease, ~
put one of the red washers we send under the pulley ; first let bottom of pul-
ley rest on this washer, then tighten up the set screw. Next put on the fric-
tion just as it is on the stick shipped with it. Then putin the blades. Keep
the small fans perfectly straight, set the large blades on an angle of about
twenty degrees, and the outer edge of the blade should be about three
inches higher than the lower edge. The main shaft should run at about
eighty-five revolutions per minute, and this will give the fans a correct
speed of about one hundred and forty revolutions. Our Shaft Hangers are
put up in the same way as the Fan Hangers. See that our Set Screws are
properly tightened before starting, to prevent accidents. Keep the pully
and shaft couplings as near the Hangers as possible. The Shaft Hangers
should be about five feet apart, where two rows of fans are used run shaft
down the centre of room ; where one row, along the side. NEVER RUN BUT
ONE FAN TANDEM, if possible, as it is not satisfactory. Keep the fan blades
about two inches lower than the centre of gas globes, or about six feet six
to seven feet from the floor.

If you have power for driving fans, state what it is and about where lo-
cated. We would advise the use of a Backus Motor in all places having water
works ; others can use electric motors, steam or gas engines. In case you
desire estimate on a Water Motor, send pressure of water. Estimates cheer-
fully given.
