NOT ACCOUNTABLE-FOR BREAKAGE IN TRANSPORTATION, CLAS. Noruine is known with certainty respecting the discovery of the art of making glass. In the ruins of Nineveh glass vases, bottles, and other articles have been found, but there is no indic»-ion of its having been used for windows. Glass beads, and ovaer ornaments of the same material, have been discovered with Egyptian mummies more than three thousand years old; and hieroglyphics are still preserved, supposed to be as old as the sojourn of the Israelites in Egypt, representing glass-blowers at work much after the fashion of the present day. ; In England, as late as the twelfth century, houses provided with glass windows were regarded as truly magnificent, and not to be indulged in by any excepting the rivi: .ud noble of the kingdom. In 1688, Abraham Thevart introduced into Paris the method of making large plates, by casting the glass instead of blowing; he thus produced heavy plates, measuring 84 inches long by 50 inches wide, while those previously made had not reached near one-third this size, and were necessarily very thin. Soon after Thevart’s discovery, works were established at St. Gobain, France, where the business became very successful, and has continued so to the present time—the product of this establish- ment now ranking the first in quality in the world. The skillful management of these and other works since es- tablished in France and Belgium, produces a very large proportion of first-quality glass for exportation. England is the largest customer for Frencn Plate Glass, after which in order comes the United States. The first glass works established in the United States were commenced at Jamestown, Virginia, about the year 1610—the completion of which, however, was interrupted by the Indian massacre in the year 1622. The next glass factory of which we have any precise account was built in the town of Temple, N. H., in 1780, only to be de- stroyed by fire the following year. + mee em 4 PHILADELPHIA AGENCY FOR In 1800 the effort was again made, and since then the business has prospered to some extent. Many works, principally in New Jersey, in Western New York,. and around Pittsburgh, Pa., have been established and now produée large quantities of glass. MIRRORS. Mention is first distinctly made of glass mirrors prepared from glass plates coated with lead, by the Francisean Monk John Peck- ham, in his “Perspective Communis:” which appeared in 1272 The art of covering plates of giass with tin foil was discovered and carried on at Venice in the sixteenth century, and was intro- duced from thence into France in 1665, where it was much ex- tended by Abraham_Thevart’s discovery of the mode of casting plates, in 1688, and since brought to its present state of perfection. The operation of coating glass with mercury is attended with "serious detriment to the health: of the workmen from the vapors of the mercury; it also requires very considerable time for comple- tion, and is subject to frequent miscarriage. , The process for silvering mirrors proposed by Drayton and tested by Faraday is free from all these defects. The silvering fluid is obtained by mixing ammonia with nitrate of silver, and adding to it an alcoholic solution of oil of cassia, When this mixture is poured upon the glass, and the reducing liquid* added thereto, a film of brilliant metallic silver is precipi- tated and attaches itself firmly to the surface of the glass. To protect the silver, it is then varnished or painted with shellac and red lead, making the “red back plate” so well known and so thoroughly disliked by the trade. Notwithstanding the apparent advantages of this process, it has not been carried on successfully by the manufacturers of mirrors, owing to the difficulty of obtaining a perfectly clear, un- spotted surface of any eonsiderable extent. IRREGULAR SHAPES. All panes of glass which are not rectangular are charged at the full size of the squares required to cut them, and fractional parts of inches are charged as full inzhes. * Solution of oil of cloves in alcohol. 4 a a tecitioeatle FRENCH PLATE GLASS COMPANIES. The flowers, figures, or other designs are then traced over with an etching needle, leaving those parts of the glass which it traces uncovered. The plate is now exposed to the vapors of hydrofluorie acid. In a few minutes the exposed portions of the surface of the glass are found deeply corroded or etched, the etching being deeper in proportion to the time it has been exposed to the vapors.
