The most wonderful feat of hoisting heavy materials into position ever accomplished in Cleveland has just been completed by Mr. James Dunn with the aid of the Bailey Hoisting Ap- paratus. Messrs. Morgan, Root & Co. have just erected in the rear of their building on Bank St. a large smoke stack composed of ten foot sections of twenty-four inch iron water pipe weighing 2,800 pounds each. This compact little machine lifted each section into position with perfect ease, requiring the assistance of only two men. This operation attracted mnch attention and elicited expressions of astonishment from observers, that so great a power could be ‘concentrated in so smalla machine. As a lifting machine the Bailey Elevator is the wonder of the age. Its compactness, convenience and power being astonishing features, while its utility has been fully demonstrated. CLEVELAND, Ouro, December 5th, 1882. Mr. James Dunn, Cleveland, Ohio: Dear Sir: The Hoisting Apparatus, “Bailey’s’” No. 3 Portable Hoist, worked to our entire satisfaction. It lifted our flywheel and shaft, weighing over twenty tons, and did its work easily. For a machine of its character we do not think it has an equal. Yours truly, M: C.. DOW7&-CO;; Proprietors of the National Flouring Mills, 265 Merwin St. This wheel was lifted with a No. 3 Double Chain. Exyrid, O., Marcu 6th,°1883; Mr. James Dunn, Cleveland, O.: Dear Sir: The Bailey Hoist'No. 2, which we ordered from you some time ago, will hoist anything in our line of monumental business with ease and safety. It is all that it is recom- mended to be, and more too. We could not afford to do without it. : ; , Very truly yours, J. M. WooLrinGE «& Co. E. C. OFFICE oF JOSEPH BrITER, DEALER IN MARBLE AND GRANITE MONUMENTS. 2 , CanaL Dover, May 31, 1883. Dear Sir: I have just given the machine a trial, and think there is nothing its equal, and I can’t see how any marble or granite dealer can afford to do without a machine if they cost double the amount you ask for them, Yours respectfully, JosEPH BErrer. Mr. J. Dunn, Cleveland : ae Norroik, Va., May 26, 1883. _ Dear Sir: We have to apologize for keeping quiet about your hoist. Can set monu- ments from twelve to twenty feet high, with the help of one man only, and with less trouble and expense than with anything in the derrick line. With one hand can raise a base five feet square and twenty inches thick. Can cheerfully recommend it. ; ‘ Yours, truly, D. M. Bunnetu, Orrice oF THE ADRIAN CoNSOLIDATED STEAM GRANITE WoRKs. tS . ADRIAN, MicnHiGAN, Fepruary 67H, 1883. James Dunnn, Cleveland, O.: Dear Sir: The Bailey Hoist No. 2, which we got of you in May last has given entire satis- faction. We are using it in setting all our monumental work, and for hoisting heavy blocks of stone. One man with your hoist can raise larger blocks of stone and do it easier than four men with any other hoist. I cheerfully recommend them to any persons wishing a powerful and easy working hoist for raising heavy weights. Respectfully yours, W. T. CROSBY, Instructor in Geology and Mineralogy, says: It is important to observe that it is rare to find a Granite so destitute as this of pyrite, and other sulphides, through the decomposition of which the color, polish, and even the strength of many Granites are destroyed. So far as I am able to judge from the specimens submitted to me, this Granite is remarkably free from:cracks and pores, being practically impervious to water; so that we may safely predict that it will not be injuriously affected by cold weather. In short, this is a very compact, firm variety of Granite, possessing in its great durability, handsome color and brilliant and permanent polish just the qualities required for the best monumental work.
