NOR nearly fifty years the house of CLOW has been manufacturing steam and hot-water apparatus and working out heating problems. Steam and hot-water have long been recognized both by architects and the general public as the best of all heating systems. With the ordinary steam or hot water heating there are many days, PARTICU- LARLY IN THE SPRING AND FALL,—after the fires are out or before they have been started—when heat is desired in certain rooms in residences, apartments, office buildings, and so on, but everybody has shivered and gone without because of the trouble and expense to meet these temporary needs. For years we have been working on this problem and have perfected a radiator, thoroughly tested by our experts, and whose use for several years in all parts of the world has demonstrated it to be the perfection of the best of all heating systems. It is no exaggeration to say that the Clow Patent Radiators mark an epoch in the history of heating engineering. “Chere are two types—JThe Gasteam and Gas water, and either type can be used in two ways: FIRST: As an independent plant—gas only for fuel. SECOND: As part of a regular steam or hot water system—gas or coal for fuel. It will thus be seen that the Clow Patent Radiator can be used as part of a regular plant in which the other radiators are of the ordinary variety, or as a whole plant in itself. By thus combining the Clow Patent Radiators with radiators of the ordinary type—using them as Gasteam or Gas water radiators in rooms where temporary heat is wanted—and as heat distributors with a central boiler when the fires are on in the basement, you have the only steam or hot water heating system which adjusts itself to every condition of climate, season or weather, for the Dining Room, Sewing Room, Sick Room, Bath Room, Sitting Room, Bed Room, Conservatory, also for offices, ‘clubs, churches, stores, apartment buildings, railway stations, banks, lodge halls, garages, roller rinks, hotels, and for ANY ROOM IN ANY BUILDING, where you want the best heat—STEAM OR HOT WATER—and want it quickly. nee Clow Two-=Column Gasteam Radiators eee acs | Salta ae cHica 0 ‘as in In{Squa ton Approximate f von No.of Setionsgiee wiht] Hosting Sor) yen, ches 4 154 16 155) le oe 5 18 20 190 B74 6 204 24 | 230 374 i 28 De |e O70 7a 8 258 32 B0Ot | 874 9 28 36 340 874 10 304 AQ a|) ABS ae e874 11 33 44 | 415 374 12 354 AGH NES AB 274 i 38 52 490 a7 14 404 BEL |. 530 S7 Lee 15 43 ee eer) 374 TWO-COLUMN “GASTEAM” RADIATOR, 37 Inches HIGH MARBLE BASES FURNISHED AT NOMINAL CHARGE END VIEW SHOWING AUTOMATIC REGULA= TOR AND WATER GAUGE Rules for Figuring ‘*Gasteam”’ Radiation Allow 1 square foot of radiation for 2 square feet of glass. TWO-COLUMN “ GASTEAM” RADIATOR WITH VALVE FOR STEAM CONNECTION TO BOILER IF DESIRED (@|N rooms equipped with Clow Patent Radiators you can have steam or hot water heat in twenty minutes; and at very low expense—a little over one cent an hour, for example, for a seven section radiator. And you turn off even this small expense the moment you turn off the heat. Why Tear UP the Floors Do not tear up the floors if you are thinking of putting in a new heating plant or perfecting your present one. CLOW PATENT RADIATORS not only furnish steam or hot water heat where there is no boiler, but those having the ordinary steam or hot water systems can substitute CLOW PATENT RADIATORS in any room, simply by connecting them with the piping of the regular system. The Clow Radi- ators will thus constitute a part of the regular system under ordinary conditions and furnish a complete heating plant in themselves for temporary needs. How the Automatic ‘‘Janitor’’ Controls the ; Fuel Supply Where the Gasteam or Gas Water Radiator is used inde- pendently—either as the sole means of heating or as part of the ordinary heating system to meet temporary needs—heat is supplied by gas generated in the base of the radiator, and the amount of gas is automatically controlled by the automatic regulator shown in our illustration. Combustion is PERFECT: so that there is absolutely no odor. Four Raw Day Conundrums With One Answer What is the good of a steam plant without steam? A hot water plant that isn’t going? In this chamber is .a burner: of the Bunsen type, with a means of regulating it to any gas pressure. A gauge indicates the amount of water in the water chamber, and is provided with screw caps at top and bottom, by which water may be supplied to or drawn off from the radiator. Each Gasteam radiator is equipped with an automatic air valve, which closes as soon as radiator is filled with steam. The Gasteam radiator is assembled in sections from four to fifteen, the size of the radiator depending upon the size of the room to be heated, and is manufactured in the following heights: 2-column, 37 incheshigh by 8 inches wide. 6- column, 20 inches high by 124 inches wide, without flue. 6- column, 20 inches high by 122 inches wide, with flue for natural gas. With artificial gas the Gasteam radiator is odorless, and does not require a flue. In some sections of the country the natural gas is of such a quality that no flue is required, but in other sections a flue is required. The 6-column Gasteam radiator, on account of its height, can be used under a window or set ina mantel in place of a gas log or grate. The Clow Gasteam radiator, as previously mentioned, can be used in two-ways, as illustrated. FIRST: As anindependent steam plant—gas only for fuel. SECOND: As part of an ordinary steam system—gas or coal for fuel. Thus when part of the radiators in a steam system are of the Gasteam type they can be used the same as other radiators) during cold weather. In moderate weather such as Fall and Spring, the gas attachment can be used-to’ kill the chill, for it does not pay to keep up a fire in the boiler for a little heat night and morning. Clow Patent Gas Water Radiator The Clow Patent Gas Water Radiator resembles the Clow Gasteam Radiator in outward appearance. It does not require a water gauge as it is connected to the water supply system of the building. A key air valve is used instead of an automatic valve, because a hot water system does not become air bound like a steam system. A thermostat regulated by the temperature of the water controls the gas supply, reducing it as soon as the water reaches a temperature of 190 degrees. This radiator is very attractive in pattern and design, and in keeping with the fixtures of the most costly homes. Under the radiator is a Bunsen burner for use when radiator is not being used in connection with a boiler. The Clow Patent Gas Water Radiator can be used in three ways as illustrated: System No: I Independent of boiler or expansion tank — gas only for fuel: System No.2 Independent of boiler but connected to an expansion tank — gas only for fuel. First unscrew the top of water gauge, as shown in | illustration herewith, and pour in water until gauge shows ¢ about one-half full. Ordinarily this water will last for * several weeks, but if water does not show in gauge at any time, put in more water. Then light a match with right hand, turn on the gas with left and hold match in front of and above burner pipe. The automatic regulator turns down the gas ;when a few pounds of steam pressure are raised, and leaves only enough gas burning to maintain that pressure. In Combination with Steam Boiler. When it is desired to use Gasteam radiator in connection with a steam boiler open radiator valve and steam will travel through the Gasteam radiator the same as in the case of an ordinary steam radiator. If on opening radiator valve there is any water’in the radiator it will naturally flow back to END SECTION. boiler as every steam radiator is pitched slightly. Gasteam Radiator Tey: , . ss : showing water gauge When it is desired to use gas for fue! turn off radiator valve and regulator. tightly, fill radiator with water until gauge shows one half full, then apply match to the burner and in a short time you are enjoying steam heat without coal. DIRECTIONS For Operating Gas Water Radiator. When Gas Water radiator is connected up to the water supply of building with- out boiler, designated in illustrations on pages 12 and 13 as systems one and two, all that 1t is necessary to do is to turn on gas cock and light the burner, and in a short time you are enjoying delight- ful hot waterheat. In the case of system 2, see that expansion tank is replenished with water occasionally. If Gas Water radiator is connected to hot water boiler (see page 13 system 3) and itis desired to use the gas only, turn off valve in flow pipe to Gas Water radia- tor then turn on gas cock and light burner, and a soft, gentle and uniform hot water heat will be the result. When gas water radiator is to be operated with hot water boiler simply turn on valve ‘‘J”’ and the hot water circu- lates through radiator. Valve in flow pipe should be a tight closing valve for a loose fitting valve would when closed allow the circulation of hot water from the radiator through the heating system instead of localizing the heat. Decoration Radiators can be decorated to harmonize with the environments of the room. We are prepared to furnish them in aluminum bronze ata slight additional cost. However, we. consider it best that radiators should be shipped plain and decorated after being connected, as END SECTION. they will not then be marred or damaged in transit. THE MODERN BATH-ROOM pits what room in your house can you ‘least dispense? Your Vi answer is the bath-room. Yet, in how many well-to-do homes ve one finds the-bath room tucked off in one corner, small and poorly ventilated and apparently located wherever space was left, after special attention had been paid to the arrangement of bed rooms, living rooms, furniture, etc. The bath-room is the most important room in the house, and no expense should be spared to make it roomy, well ventilated and up to date in the selection of plumbing fixtures. It should also be readily accessible and located in the most convenient place. The health of the family depends upon first-class sanitary arrangements. In many spacious homes, one will find only one bath-room, when there should be three, altogether. One bath-room to every three persons is a fair estimate. When it is not possible to have more than one bath-room, separate lavatories in the bed rooms relieve the situation, for in the mor- ning the bath-room is in great demand and much delay in getting down to breakfast is occasioned if the only lavatory in the house is in the bath- room. There is a great demand now for high grade plumbing goods, but they must be plain, practical and sensible fixtures. Ornamental tubs and lava- tories are obsolete. In this booklet we are illustrating only one of our many designs in bath-room interiors, as lack of space will not permit more. If you are building, or are about to alter your present home, we hope our suggestions, as to fixtures and their arrangement, will be of benefit to you. Our line of plumbing and steam goods embraces a catalog of nearly 1,000 pages, which will give you some idea of the magnitude of our manu- facture for Residences, Apartment Buildings, Hotels, Schools, Universities, Railway Stations, Banks, Clubs, Etc. Please send us the name of your plumber, if you are considering new plumbing fixtures. At the earlier period the use of latrine closets was general and the primary question was between the latrine and the individ- ual automatic closet. Within the above stated period, the latrine or range type of closet has been substantially elimi- nated. It is now generally recognized that a closet should be flushed out im- mediately after it is used. Apart from this insanitary feature of the latrine closet, its consumption of water being five or six times that of individual closets, made it expensive for maintenance. The elimination of the latrine closet not only for schools, but for other buildings, has increased the demand for automatic in- dividual closets. In this field James B. Clow & Sons occupy a unique position in that they are the only firm in the country which actually has an auto- matic closet which is made substantially as it was made many years ago, many of them having been in use as long as fifteen years, and all having given com- plete satisfaction. There is nothing in the realm of plumbing fixtures in which a test of actual use is so essential as in automatic closed tank closets. The Clow Company long since passed the ex- perimental stage and have a record of thousands of installations and tens of thousands of closets to which to refer. A recent addition to the Clow auto- matic closet line is a closet adapting the closed tank flush valve to a very low water pressure. The Company can now furnish these closets to operate under any pressure that will lift water to the level of the tank. Urinals In urinals a ventilated type of fixture as shown on page 37 of this booklet unquestionably represents the highest type of urinal yet introduced. Not only is the urinal ventilated but the entire room in which the urinal is placed. The method of cre- ating an air current is quite simple. This type of urinal is adapted for any type of school building. There is a growing tendency to place plumbing fixtures around the walls of the school toilet room instead of a double line of fixtures in the center. This puts every part of the toilet room under the obser- Cleveland Technical High School. Architect F. S. Barnum Sanitary Engineer W. W. Nixon 36 Plumbers Poplowsky & Hirsh The “Cymric’” Automatic, M-1810 Madden's Patent vation of a person in any part of the ‘room. A fixture which has happily gone out of use to a large extent and which should go more and more out of use is the automatic trough urinal which does not hold a body of water. The insanitary features of this fixture are so patent and so pronounced that its inappropri- ateness should be apparent. Where the ventilated urinal first referred to cannot be used on account of cost, the appro- priate fixture is an automatic siphon urinal which holds a body of water in the trough, lke the Clow automatic siphon urinal. The large body of water in the trough acts as a dilutor and pre- vents the dissemination of odors. This urinal has much to recommend it for school use. Drinking Fountains Hygienic considerations have prompt- ed quite a general use of a type of drink- ing fountain which relieves the user from contact with cup or other vessel which another has used. This has de- veloped an interest and quite a general adoption of the bubbling cup type of drinking fountain for use in schools. These fountains are made either to The Clow Patent Ventilated Double Urinal N-28r (Patented September 11, 1906) 37 JAMES B CLOW &SONS CHICACO NEW YORK HAVANA JAMES B CLOW & SONS CHICACO NEW YORK HAVANA attach to the wall like the ordinary type of fountain, as illustrated in Fig. R-710, or to stand on a pedestal, the pedestal being either of iron or of Adamantose ware, R-735. A line of fixtures of the types referred to is illustrated in the new Clow Catalogue. A school toilet room should always have one or more lavatories according to the number of persons to be provided for. These should be of Adamantose ware and have self closing Basin Cocks. The illustration Q-363 shows Adaman- tose lavatories arranged in battery. A fact which we are disposed to urge in selecting plumbing fixtures to be subjected to hard usage as in schools, is the vital importance that only fixtures which have proven themselves equal to the test be used. A certain amount of experimentation is necessary, but the course that wisdom would suggest is to profit by the experience of others and take the legitimate advantage which that experience has brought.
