Our gardens must necessarily differ from those of other countries owing to the difference in climate, but their marked difference from the gardens of the Old World is due to changed social conditions. During the Colonial period, our gardens, like our architecture, were modelled chiefly after those of England. Since then we have passed through periods when the decorative accessories were all that bad taste could conceive. Our awakened sense of beauty and the perfection of the lawn-mower were undoubtedly responsible for the vogue of the undecorated lawn. Owing to this advance in our artistic appreciation and the general increase of wealth, we have evolved the present style of gardening, which is more luxurious in character. The gardens of Italy are the chief source of our inspiration. The plans of the palace gardens of the Renaissance, though on too grand a scale for our average scheme, are replete with suggestions, and the gardens themselves contain a profusion of vases, pots and furniture that can be appropriately used. Our chief aim should be to make the garden an outdoor part of the home as well as a beautiful setting for the house. The Galloway Collection of Terra Cotta and Pottery shown in this catalogue include many original designs and replicas from antique art adapted to our present needs and in harmony with the prevailing styles of architecture. —_ #@ She 2¥ % ie j sa ier pa Dr Zig ie a Fi —— ', oe TERRA* COLV AND POTTERY FOR] GARDEN AND&« ¢ © oar aes ERRA COTTA is the ideal material for garden rc: and out-of-door decoration, combining durability ‘ with great artistic possibilities in color and treatment. The extensive use of Terra Cotta since the early history of architecture is con- vineing proof of its worth. Our clays being earefully selected and fired to a degree that ' renders the body frost-proof, produce material that will weather the severest winter. A wide range of color is possible in Terra Cotta, the natural clay tints varying from a delicate cream white to deep red, while other { shades can be obtained by the addition of color. Gray of medium shade is the most popular color. Our gray Terra Cotta harmonizes with the usual building materials, matching in tone many of the gray stones and in pleasing contrast with red brick and other dark materials. The plasticity of the clay in the unburned state permits a freedom and delicacy in handling detail that is impossible in other materials. Careful workmanship makes our productions as appropriate for use in the house, where the first consideration is beauty, as they are for a out-of-door decoration where the essential quality is durability. In addition to the advantages already mentioned, the cost of superior work in Terra Cotta is less than inferior work in the cheapest stone. It is also superior in color, finish and durability to any cement composition. It is this combination of price, beauty and dura- bility that has won high favor for our productions. We have had displays at several of the large exhibitions, notably: The Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia, The Columbian Exposition in Chicago and the Exposition at St. Louis. No matter how simple or pretentious it may be, the sun-dial should be a central point of interest. The sun marks on the trees and flowers the passing of the seasons, so it is fitting that on the dial-face it should mark the passing of the quiet hours spent in your garden. No. 202 No. 150. Sun Dial for Wall ‘A No; 287 “Greek” Doric Dial “Tempus fugit” Roman” Doric Dial 40 inches high 42 inches high Lin IAL PLATES of brass are included with all sun-dials except for Wall dial No. pal 150, which has the dial incisedin the terra cotta. Setting of sun-dial: The shaft should be firmly set upon a foundation that reaches below the frost line. To make the shaft secure and prevent its being thrown out of plumb, a rod should be extended up through the hollow center of shaft and the space filled with concrete. To accomplish this it is not neces- sary to completely fill the hollow portion of the shaft, but merely have several inches of solid material at the base. The plate is set with the base of gnomen pointing south, but as the true south varies from the magnetic meridian, a compass will not accurately determine the position. A more accurate adjustment can be obtained by using a table of time variation which shows the daily discrepancies between sun and standard time. With the aid of this table the dial can be set by the sun, mid-day being the best time to make the adjustment. The dial plate must be level and, when properly adjusted, should be securely fastened to shaft with cement.
