M. BARBER, ist. Since the law of 1878 has been passed, properties are now liable for material and labor, making it necessary for the owner of the house to know that all bills of material are positively paid before he owns his house. This he cannot know if his builder buys material of many different houses. But if all material is bought of one responsible house this anxiety and care of the owner is avoided, as we will always wait for our money until the building is completed, when one settlement and one pay- ment will suffice; then the owner of the property has nothing to watch but the daily labor of the week. 2d. To mechanics wishing to build, and not being able to afford bondsmen for their contract, by coming to us their bail-bond can be avoided, as we furnish all goods and wait until their last payment for our money, so we really become every poor and honest mechanic’s bondsman. 3 3d. Having now put in a set of machinery especially to facilitate the making of special orders, so in future no special order need be delayed as is customary in factories. 4th. Owing to the difficulty many persons have in deducting percentage, we omit prices, but will furnish them by return mail to any one. sth. It is therefore of prime importance that all the stairs should be built on correct principles, tastefully and scientifically. All farchitects and competent builders recognize this fact. 1207 Marker St., PHILADELPHIA. 83 Our stock of stair materials always on hand is complete, and embraces everything in the stair building line, from the plainest Baluster to the most elaborate Newel Post. We execute the most elaborate designs furnished by architects, and fill all orders from detail drawing in a manner warranted to satisfy the most critical. We are prepared at all times to erect stairs of any style or description in the city or country, in a workmanlike manner. This department is in charge of Amos MILLER, who gives his personal attention to all orders entrusted to us. In ordering stairs, be particular to give the height of story from floor to floor; width of joists in second and third floors; width and rise of stairs, and size of cylinder, with sketch showing the position of rises in cylinder; the number and size of rise and tread, as cut on rough horse, Orders for railing worked for straight stairs should give the rise and tread as sawed out on rough horse; the number of rises ; the size of cylinder; which way it turns on landing, and length of straight rail on stair and on level. Always measure from the spring of cylinder. For winding stairs we should have an exact plan, showing location of rises in cylinder, PMO BARBER, 84 1207 MarKE Ol == = = \, SS : . EE aS SAFETY, DURABILITY, SIMPLICITY AND ECONOMY, Although constructed upon scientific principles, it is easily understood and managed, and we can truthfully say that it is the only Gas Machine extant, using the air-pump which will supply at any degree of temperature a ful], brilliant, steady and continuous Light, carrying the Gas unimpaired through any length of pipe; and for this reason it is particularly desirable for FAC- TORIES, CHURCHES. COLLEGES, HOTELS and other large buildings. The Gas is superior to Coal Gas, being notably soft and mellow; and costs much less (the expense being about $1.00 per 1000 cubic feet). Gasoline, the substance from which it is generated, is worth, at the present time, twenty-five cents per gallon. It contains more gas- making material than any other known substance, and, being one of the lighter products of pe- troleum, naturally, the supply is as inexhaustible as the article from which it is distilled. Chem- ically considered, it is almost a pure carbon, and its comparative uselessness for. any other purpose points almost directly to its intended use (with proper appliances) for the production of illum inating Gas. The process is simply to pass a current of air steadily and continuously (while using Gas) from an air-pump located in your cellar through the air-pipe to the carburetter, located at a * preper distance from the house; and in passing through the evaporating material and large traveling surfaces in the carburetter, the air becomes carburetted, thus forming illuminating Gas, which is returned through another pipe (see cut) to the house. The process is strictly au- tomatic ; Gas is generated only as fast as it is required for immediate consumption ; continuing while the burners are being used, but stopping instantly when they are extinguished. Our air-pump and carburetter (except the movement, or winding apparatus, and frame, which are of iron and brass) are made entirely of copper ; and the latter is of sufficient capacity to require filling but once or twice a year. © No one is required to enter the vault, as there is no residuum to be drawn off—every drop being utilized. It can be operated with weights and pulleys, or with our new and grand improvement, the Overshot Water-Wheel, which is entirely automatic ; starting when you light a burner, and stopping instantly when the light is extinguished. . We wish it to be fully understood and remembered, that (unlike any other Air-Gas machine) it is in the strictest sense entirely independent of atmospheric changes, and is so constructed as to regulate, with unerring certainty, the quantity and quality of the Gas; affording a brilliant, steady and continuous light, for any number of heurs, days or weeks, or as long as there is any oil whatever in the carburetter. THE VICTOR is the only Gas Machine in the market which is entirely secure against back pressure ; that great desideratum being attained by the use of an ingenious and sure device. Insurance Companies endorse policies on buildings lighted by our Machine at the same rates as when using coal-gas supplied by the City Companies. We pipe buildings when desired. 162 P. M. RAND's PATENT SEWER GAS CREMATOR AND DRAIN VENTILATOR. Patented March 4th, 1879. The cremator consists of an air-tight packed retort, cast iron, - which takes the place of one of the ordinary range fire box linings, and is connected to the drain pipe at its lowest point, and is vented into the outer air by means of the chimney. A strong draught is created, exhausting all foul and impure gases from the entire house drainage system, and destroying them. Any system of plumbing or drainage work, wells, vaults, &c., thoroughly ventilated and purified at very small expense. Architects and builders are invited to thoroughly examine this system of ventilation; it is superior to any other offered. Disin- fecting chambers of any size built. Having made arrangements with the principal glass manufacturers, we are now able to fill all orders on short notice for glass of all descrip tions. Cate pk. 166 P M. BARBER, a ie BARBER'S Philadelphia READY MIXED PAINTS. (Guaranteed.) We would call your attention to our Pure Liquid Paints—ready for immediate use on opening packages. We offer these goods to consumers and the trade, as the very best that are made—for the following reasons : PURITY.—Being entirely free from barytes, clay, or any other adulterant, thinned with Linseed Oil, Spirits Turpentine, and dryers of the best quality, render them superior to all Liquid Paints that contain any of the above adulterants, or that are mixed with alkalies, water, benzine, soap, or the many articles that are used to cheapen the mixture, and necessarily reduce the quality. | BODY, or Covering Capacity.—These Paints being pure, and weighing 15 to 16 pounds to the gallon, will consequently cover better and more surface than those weighing only ro to 12 pounds (as the chemical paints do), or that contain barytes or clay, which add to the weight without increasing the body. PERMANENCY OF COLOR.—Great care being taken in selecting colors for tinting to use only permanent colors, our tints do not fade and change color after being applied, as this is the case where the only object is to get the tint, without reference to proper combination of permanent colors. CONVENIENCE,—Any one who can use a paint brush can apply them. Con- sumers can select tints, and if additional quantity is wanted, can always rely on getting same shade, and not have two or three shades on same building, as is often the case where tints are made experimentally. ; ECONOMY.—Being ready for use there is no waste or excess of any material, as is almost always the case where the consumer buys Lead, Oil, and Turpentine. With our goods he can use them all up, knows what he is getting, and has and uses what he pays for. We put these paints up in small cans, from 1 to 5 pounds, and also by the gallon, in packages from cans %, 1, 2, 3, and 5 gallons, to kegs 10, 15, and 25 gallons, and barrels, 45 gallons.
