As civilization advanced and the comforts of home life became more carefully studied, fancifully designed tapestries and other woven materials Were hung from ceiling to floor to hide the unsightly masonry. These fabrics became known as arras from the town in orthern France of that name where they were largely manufactured and which, being a fortress of the first magnitude, has figured so repeatedly dur- ing the last few years in connection with the war. The dampness of the rooms necessitated the hanging of these costly materials at a considerable distance from the dripping walls, thus forming an excellent hiding place for eavesdroppers and spies, and Shakespeare speaks of the slaying of one of these by means of a sword-thrust through the arras. 7) In due course the rough interior stone-work was plastered for the embel- lishment of which a fitting material was sought that Would be in keeping with the improved conditions that prevailed, and that Would be within the means of the masses, for these rich tapestries or arras could only be afforded by those possessing extreme wealth.
