AVERY LIBRARY COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY ELECTRICITY IN THE HOME MEANS ECON- OMY, COMFORT AND CONVENIENCE The House Without a Kitchen Chimney A house without a kitchen chimney may not be within your grasp or may not be desired by you at the present time, but a home containing a reasonable number of modern conveniences is a necessity. There is no more reason why you should put up with discomfort and positive lack of ordinary necessities in your own home than there is for you to tolerate poor service and out-of-date methods of illumination in a modern hotel. The private residence which does not utilize Electricity in some shape or form is as antiquated as a hotel of the period of 1860. The old-fashioned housekeeper would not have believed you if told that a house without a kitchen chimney was a possibility—that hot water with~ out a boiler was simply a matter of turning a switch—that laundry work required no stove for heating irons—or that lamps required no oil ; and SIS BURGLARS AVOID ELECTRICALLY LIGHTED HOUSES. WOULD YOU LIKE TO KNOW THE REASON? vet; that is what Electricity has done for the housekeeper of to-day. The illustration on the middle pages of this booklet is a reproduction of some photographs taken of a house which does not contain a kitchen chimney. There are, to-day, quite a num-~ ber of these houses in various places in this country, and these houses are not the homes of the rich or the homes of the faddist. We have reached the point where the use of Electrical ap- paratus and Electric Light 1s no longer the exclusive privilege of the wealthy. The rates named for the use of Electricity in residences in Philadelphia are lower than any cities of the first class in this country, and in Bathroom Conveniences AN ELECTRIC HEATING PAD IS NEVER TOO HOT NOR TOO COLD. SINCE LY DURING THE SWITCH addition to that fact, the liberal user of Electric Light in residences receives a rate which is lower, lamp for lamp, than any other modern illuminant. Now-a-days, housekeeping really is a busi- ness—quite as exacting and difficult for the housewives as ‘“money~grubbing ” is for the men ; and if there is one function more than another which Electricity can be made to serve, it 1s that of making housekeeping simple and easy and economical. Hundreds of two-story houses in West Philadelphia are using Electricity in some of its many forms. This fact, alone, should be conclusive proof of its economy. Many of the little Electrical helps and practi~ cal conveniences to which we call attention else- where in this booklet have become necessities in thousands of Philadelphia homes. They have done more to simplify household work, to econo- mize labor and clarify the servant problem than all the theories and advice to housekeepers that have ever been presented.
