—= - { Lies | HINTS & SUGGESTIONS FOR THE USE OF ARTISTIC \' 4 PAPER TIANGINGS “——— : CHICAGO SEASON 1913-1914 N THIS book are mirrored many features of our new line. It has grown as our house has grown and as our line of wallpaper has grown. As our line has the reputation of being the largest and most complete in the country, so this fifty-six-page illustrated book is the largest and most complete ever issued by any house. With our previous successes as an impetus, we set out this season to surpass. all our past efforts. How well we have succeeded a discriminating public will judge. This book is issued as a help and guide to our many patrons in featuring the latest ideas in interior decoration and the showing of color schemes not heretofore attempted. It still leaves plenty of room for your own imagination and the following of your personal tastes. But we have opened the channels leading to the new thought in decorative art and have paved the way to the solution of an always vexing problem as to what is proper in interior decoration. No description of an idea in colors or style of decoration would throw nearly as much light on the subject as the colored illustrations of this book, for what the eye perceives in this case is more helpful to a decision than what many volumes of treatise on art would be. Much stress has therefore been laid in the tone reproduction of the original colors of the Decorations by the use of the most advanced methods of the printers’ art. The suggestions shown in this book are not the ideas of one man, and not the work of one man, but the compilation of the best decorative thought of the foremost artists of America and Europe. Where we ask credit is in the discriminative selection of the best there is in the world’s markets. We have put a hard cover on this book with the thought that you preserve it well. We have new advanced plans for the coming season, not fully matured, yet to be announced, which make us feel that it will be worth your while to preserve this book. Preserve this book. It will prove its value to you at the most critical moment. IPUL, JAD ID, INbeY, 1 HAMBER—The Japanese primrose design here illustrated is especially adapted for larger Bed Rooms and for Parlors where a light, cheery effect is desired. The cretonne we offer to match the design of the Sidewall and of the upper and lower Borders greatly enhances the beauty of the room, and is really a part of the entire scheme of decoration. We think so well of this decorative ensemble that we carry it in three different colors, and while we show here the blue effect, we are illustrating on Plate No. 4 of this book the yellow and pink effects, both with sep- arate cretonnes to match. This leaves variety in the choice of color schemes and also permits the use of the same decorations, but of different colors, for different rooms of the same house. There is here a happy combination of dignified splendor and natural beauty which cannot be surpassed, giving the room the refined appearance so much desired. These decorations can be arranged in a great many different ways to fit the plan of the room, and the panels may be held at any height or width. We recommend white woodwork. We have always advocated that great care be given in the decoration of the Hall, and in the decorative scheme suggested here we believe we have produced an exceptionally stately and extremely beautiful Hall. The style is of the Arabesque school and the decorations match harmoniously with the imitation Cordova leather Sidewall. For the Ceiling decoration we use besides the Paper Beam No. 23980, also Base Border No. 43378, which together produce a very effectively decorated ceiling, but where the plan of the Hall would not permit the use of the beam, the base border alone may be used, as shown on ceiling of Plate No. 1. The decoration of the lower part of the wall is produced with Cut-Out Border No. 33378, by cutting out the center figures of the border, and with Base Border No. 43378. The design is a composition of roses and lilacs so cleverly worked together as to make it one of the most artistic floral effects of the season, mechanically produced. The harmony of colors is superb, leaving but very little to one’s imagination, and it cannot fail to appeal to our true artistic sense. The Cretonne, no less the Wall Paper deco- rations, is cleverly executed and contains the identical design as of the Frieze, so truly matched in colors, which materially helps to bring out the entire harmonious effect of the room. Here the family meets at least three times a day across the table, and pleasant conversation is had in the discussion of the events of the day and the happenings within the family. It is very important, therefore, that the decorations of this room have the proper motif and color, so as to bring good cheer into the hearts of everyone. In this room also we entertain our guests and friends, and in their honor and in true hospitality no effort should be spared to make the Dining Room as attractive as possible. The illustration on the opposite page speaks better than any words of ours could describe. It is indeed a pleasure to look at and a joy to behold. The upper decoration of the wall is produced with our famous lithographed Frieze, “The Needle Mountains,’ executed for us in Germany, and the color effect and the beauty of the scenery have never been equalled in work of this kind. Where the plan of the room will not permit the height (42 inches) of this border, other of our beautiful lithographed Friezes of different heights may be substituted by referring to Plates Nos. 30, 31 and 32 of this book. We show the largest variety of lithographed Friezes, most of them made for us in Europe as repro- ductions of the work of famous artists. For the lower Sidewall we have used a Tiffany background, so popular now for work of this kind, and the decoration over the lower Sidewall is as fitting and harmonious with the entire arrangement of the room as it ’ possibly can be. Decoration No. 13986 has to the width one strip of the part of the decoration set under the plate rail and two strips of the narrow binder, which we have used as pilasters and as the base border. The Decorations illustrated are also hand painted in oil colors over paper, carried out in the Modernized Biedermeier style by one of our best American decorators, which for originality, beauty and real striking effect could not be reproduced for many times the cost of these decorations. The great advantage in using the plain Academy Blends is that they come 5 feet wide in rolls up to 60 yards long. It is the ideal material for upper and lower sidewalls, as it permits the use of the goods lengthwise without showing a single seam in the wall. On the lower Sidewall AB4, the decoration is painted on the 5-foot wide Academy Blend, the design repeating every 22 inches, making it very easy to put on the wall. The Caen Stone Sidewall with the Caen Stone Columns in combination with the Holy Land Scenes produce a very pleasing and harmonious effect, and very appropriate at the same time. But if a still plainer effect is desired the plain Sidewall effects as shown in our sample book No. 5 may be substituted with equally good results. The reproduction of Holy Land Scenes for this kind of work is an idea of our own, and has just been executed for us by one of the best artists in France. All these scenes are painted by hand over paper by skillful artists in Europe. We have them in a series of one hundred different scenes or sections, each scene 371% inches wide and 9 feet high, all matching on in rotation, so that any width panel may be had without a repeat. As the sections match on consecutively we cannot take out any panel from the center, but will furnish as they appear in rotation, and while they may not be the same scenes as shown in this illustration, they will be of equally artistic merit. The height of the scenes may be cut down to 5% feet without hurting the effect. Price of the Holy Land Scenes, per section, 3714 inches wide, 9 feet high, 500750. We show two Scenes in each panel of the Sunday School, making these panels 6 feet wide, but any other size of panel to fit the lay-out of the room may be had by using more or less of these scenes. We have used Tiffany blended effects for the upper Sidewall, enlivening it by truly modern bold decorations, which have many possibilities in the different ways in which these decorations may be set together. The Decorations of the upper wall consist of No. D100 and No. D101 and in the upper cut on the left side we show how these two decorations come in the roll. wa We also show in the middle left cut how an entire wall may be =| fe artistically decorated by the use of the same two decorations, using 4 the upper Frieze No. D100 as it comes in the roll. For the lower Sidewall, as shown in the illustration on the opposite page, we have used one of our Lucillin-Lincrusta designs, which is a very appropriate material for use on lower walls, especially in public places, as the material is practically indestructible and will last a lifetime. The hand-worked process of the making of these goods is responsible for their splendid effect, and we pride ourselves that so far they have not been successfully imi- tated. This is our new 1913 coloring, which we call the “‘Davis Gray,” and as far as we know this color scheme has never before been used in the making of Wall Paper. Besides its desirability because of its strict newness, it has the advantage of a soft and neutral effect that will harmonize with any furnishings of the room. We cannot too strongly recommend the use of this color scheme for Parlors and Sitting Rooms. We are indebted to many sources in this accomplishment. We are indebted to the French artist who painted for us the Holy Land Scenes. We are indebted to the American manufacturer who produced the lower Sidewall Decorations, the Columns and Cornice. We are indebted to our own staff for the execution of the drawing and the color scheme of this Lodge Room, and lastly, but not least, we are indebted to the printers who so truly carried out the work we have entrusted to them in the printing of this book. This page is dedicated to our friend, the decorator, whose trials and tribulations are many. He is not only called upon to offer suggestions for the proper decoration for different rooms, but he must follow the individual taste of his customer, at the same time he is held responsible for the final decorative results obtained. His diffi- culties are greater when called upon to execute work for public places, when the arrangement for the work is generally left to a committee of several members, often with varying ideas as to what is wanted. It is to help the man who is finally to execute the work and the committee who is to decide on it that we offer this illustration as showing the most fitting and best adapted plan for work of this kind. No more fitting idea for the decoration of a Lodge Room has ever been suggested. Our plan has the great advantage that it can be used in rooms of any height by holding the lower decorations of the Sidewall and the upper plain wall at the exact proportionate heights to fit the entire height of the room. The Holy Land Scenes are strongly recommended for backgrounds for the different stations in the Lodge Room. They have just been painted for us by one of the best artists in France and are sold exclusively by us. The Scenes come in sections 371% inches wide and 9 feet high. The height of the Scenes, however, may be reduced to as low as 5 feet when required, without hurting the effect of the Scenes. The Scenes match consecu- tively, so that any width of panel may be had without repeat of the same scenery. The Scenes come in one hundred different sections and will be furnished in rotation as we have them when the order comes in. See Plate No. 36 for scenes of other subjects. The width of the Scenic Panels are to be held to fit the requirements of the room by using one, two, three or more sections. The lower Sidewall decoration is very effective and easily set together over a plain blue oatmeal back- eround. The workings of these decorations are fully described and shown in a different color on Plate No. 34 of this book. The Lodge Emblems shown in this illustration are of our own make, painted by hand. A large variety of these Emblems is shown on Plate No. 31. Heretofore we have aimed to illustrate single rooms only, bending our efforts to produce a beautiful and correct decoration for the special room chosen, but realizing the importance of harmony in color and style of decoration permeating the entire house, we have spent considerable time and effort to illustrate here a scheme of decoration for the entire average home of our substantial citizen. We have named it ‘‘The Ideal Home,” because the color arrangement for the different rooms is perfect, and the style of decorations used modern and pleasing. We have created a perfect harmony between the colors in adjoining rooms, and have set down an idea for the decoration of an entire house that will please many. Where better decorations are wanted, and where the plan of the house does not permit of the adaptation of this arrange- ment, this illustration will be of some help in showing the harmony of different colors in adjoining rooms. We believe the illustration of ‘““The Ideal Home’”’ to be the largest and the most correctly printed that has ever been used to illustrate wallpaper. In the following space we give the pattern numbers, prices and the number of our sample books in which the different decorations illustrated may be found. Every part of the globe has contributed to the magnificence of our collection of artistic Paper-Hangings, and from those illustrated on the opposite page only two, in the center top, are of American make, the others are our own importations, designed especially for us and colored under our own supervision. In the Aerochrome Friezes we have introduced entirely new color schemes, incorporating the new ‘Davis Gray,” by which we create a harmony of colors which is as correct as it is pleasing, besides the advantage of being entirely new. We call special attention to the Cloth Base Binders, which match the Pressed Crowns shown on the opposite page, and which are intended for sewing on to the draperies of the room, producing a harmony with the Sidewall decorations that is exceptionally effective. Only a few of our extremely large collection of Cut-Out Friezes are shown in this book, but many others, to satisfy the most exacting taste, will be found in our different Sample Books. PLATE No. 24 HEATRE EFFECT—For use in Thea- tres and public places with or without the use of the Dancing Girls. A very effective treatment especially adapted for large rooms. The illustration we show here is laid out for a wall 11 feet high, but it is just as well adapted for higher walls by holding the columns higher. We would not advise, however, the use of this plan for rooms lower than 10 feet. The 42-inch Frieze used above the columns comes in two separate widths and one is set on top of the other, making the entire height of the Frieze 42 inches. We sell the two Friezes as one, under one pattern number, and when a certain quantity of yards or rolls is ordered we will furnish the same amount of both Friezes. The price quoted is for both Friezes, so when one roll of Frieze No. 13996 is ordered, one roll of each of the two Friezes will be furnished at the price of one roll. The Dancing Girls, No. D96, are cut out and set over the columns, 4 feet apart. We hung these decorations over an oatmeal brown, but they will be just as effective on any other background, as the colors of the decorations are neutral. Other patterns of Lucillin will be found in our Lucillin Sample Book, which is furnished upon request, or on the sheet of Lucillin Illustrations in our Book No. 4. We can agree that the interior of a church should be held in quiet, yet pleasing colors, and that the proportions of the decorative scheme are to be in harmony with the size and architecture of the room. This is the general rule, yet it is of the utmost importance that the interior of the church be made very attractive. We have specialized in the decoration of churches for many years, and we find from experience that the style and color harmony of decorations we here illustrate will produce a very attractive church in the great majority of cases. We strongly urge the adoption of this decorative scheme; yet should the architecture not permit the use of this plan, we will appreciate if you will make use of our decorative department, which we maintain for the help of our customers. By submitting to us a rough sketch of the church with dimensions of same, we will, without delay, forward a complete drawing and a working plan fitting the particular church with the cost of the material to be used. We had many inquiries for a fitting background for the pulpit, so we engaged a famous artist-in France to draw a series of pictures of the Holy Land, made up in sections 3714 inches wide and 9 feet high. Three of these sections are used for the background of the pulpit shown in the illustration on the opposite page. The height of these scenes may be cut down to 5 feet when required. The Holy Land Scenes come in 100 different consecutive sections, so that a picture of any width may be had without any repeat. The scenes will be furnished in rotation as we happen to have them when the order reaches us. The Church Emblems placed in the different panels are of a series of five different subjects, of our own design and production, as shown on Plate No. 30. These Emblems may be had on either brown or green background, and in ordering please specify what background is desired. We show in the left hand corner a cut, showing how the Arch is set together and giving correct measurements of same, which will be of help in the lay-out of the work. In other parts of this book we have spoken feelingly of the immense decorative value of our Imported Aerochrome Friezes, on the coloring and production of which we have spent much time and effort, and were fully rewarded by the most beautiful effects we have derived,—effects so new and different from anything else as to bar description. We have brought out in these goods new color combinations never before used in wall- paper decorations and we strongly recommend them to a discriminative public. We regret that space does not permit us to fully illustrate all the different colors we carry of these Friezes, but small illustrations of some of the colors may be found on Plate No. 24 of this book. On all of the Aerochrome Friezes we show Binders to match, and the use of the two Borders of the same color permits of great variety in the decorative plan of the room. This treatment has much in its favor in that it permits the use of bolder designs, which is again offset by the usually somber appear- ance of the lower part of the wall, producing the exact tone desired in most rooms. For Library and Dining Room the upper third effect is especially to be desired for the reason also that it permits the use of a plate or card rail for which there is such good use in these rooms. The Upper Sidewall shown here is a splen- did reproduction of a famous woven tapestry, and when on the wall it produces the same effect as the expensive hand-woven article. The lower green sidewall has just the proper tone to blend perfectly with the upper wall, producing a very harmonious general effect. We advise the use of oak woodwork. The upper black cut shows the use of these two decorations for the entire wall without the use of the Blue lower wall. The ancients have built great monuments in their theatres and arenas which outlived the existence of those nations. Modern man has not been backward in providing suitable places for the amusement of the people, and in the larger cities we have great temples of joy and laughter, where the craving for amusement may be satisfied. While the man in the large city catering to the amusement of the public can afford to put up a specially adapted building and spend large sums for the decoration of same, the problem of decoration is more difficult in the smaller theatre, for the expense must be held within reason. With this knowledge we have worked out here a plan for the decoration of the average middle-size theatre, which is extremely beautiful, at the same time not too expensive or hard of execution. We strongly recommend the use of the decorations shown here for this purpose. The main features of the Sidewall decoration are the River Rhine Panels. The center panel shown contains three sections, but the panels may be made of any size to suit the requirements of the room by using more or less of these sections. We also carry the Orient and the Switzerland Scenes, which may be substituted for this purpose, or all used together by making the Scenes of each panel of a different subject. The Three Different Scenic Decorations—Switzerland, the Orient and the River Rhine—are hand painted by some of the best artists in France. We carry each subject in continuous scenes from No. 1 to No. 100, each scene different from the other. Size of each scene 3714 inches wide, 9 feet high. You may therefore show as much as 300 feet of any one of the three subjects without showing a single repeat, or arrange them in any group of panels as shown in this illustration. As the panels match on consecutively we cannot take out any panel from the center, but will furnish as they appear in rotation and while they may not be the same scenes as shown in this illustration they will be of equally artistic merit. The panels may be cut down to 5 feet without hurting the effect. In ordering, please specify which of the three subjects is wanted. ; Price per panel, 37! inches wide, 9 feet high; either the Orient, Switzerland or the River Rhine, 400600. The Theatre Decoration over the stage and in the panel near the stage, as well as the Dancing Girls, are fully illustrated and described on Plate No. 33. The colors of the background of the Sidewall may be changed to suit the individual taste. The same decorative scheme as shown in this illustration may be used for Dance Halls, Restaurants and Ice Cream Parlors. 36 PLATE No. 3403 No. Book 4 bo = 7) 1o) 139 Cornice No. See Plate No. Panel Stile No Book 5 ) No Panel Binder Plate No. 37 lew Sic Panel Book 5 PLATE’ No. 37 23900 ; SS ———— 23948 oe vo se ; Roll Yard | Inches | in Roll aa —_|— ——— _ 23904 |. 23556 | Fungus 100150 0406 4 30 aa 23560) ~Fur 100150 | 0406 4 | 30 73906 fit 23564 | Gable 100150 0406 4 30 23570 | Gait 100150 0406 4 30 23008 p 23952 23572 | Galaxy | 100150 | 0406 | 4 30 —EE a. 23900 | Habit 70105 | 0203 | 114 60 ee ae ee 23902 Habitue 70105 | 0203 | 14% | 60 ri re = _ ae : 23904 | Haddock 6090 | 0304%| 24% | 38 23912 § RA pg 2p RO Teme ye Ne ie 23954 23906 | Haft 6090 | 03044% 2% 38 — 23908 Hail 6090 | 0304144 2% 38 23014 eee Se OM 23910 | Hake 6090 | 030414% 2% 38 ' ' 23912 | Halberd 6090 0304144) 2% 38 23916 ‘estas . ‘ — 23914 Halcyon 6090 030414 2% 38 —_ 23916 | Halibut 6090 0203.2 45 i 23918 Halo 6090 0203 2 45 23920 23920 | Halter 6090 | 0203 2 45 : 23922 Halyard 6090 | 0203 2 45 23922 23924 Hamlet 6090 0203 2 45 23924 23926 | Hammer 6090 | 0203 2 45 : ro Pn ee ee YEG NS CES 23928 | Hammock 6090 0203 2 45 23926 23930 Hamper 5075 | 0203 1% | 45 23928 23932 | Handle 5075 | 0203 3} 45 23934 | Handsome 5075 | 0203 3 | 45 23930 meaner 23936 | Happy 70105 | 0304%) 3 38 23938 | Harbinger) 70105 | 030414) 3 | 38 23932 23940 | Harbor 70105 | 030414, 3 | 38 se 23942 | Hardy 6090 | 0203 14% 60 23934 joe 23944 Hare 6090 | 0203 114 60 23946 Harmonic 6090 0203 14% | 60 23936 23948 Harmony 80120 0406 4 | io) 23950 | Harness 80120 | 0406 | 4 30 23952 | Harp 80120 | 050714) 514 23 7 23954 Harpoon 100150 0609 | 514% | 23 23956 Harvest 100150 | 0609 5% 23 23940 23958 Hasp 100150 | 0609 5% 23 23960 Hassock | 100150 0609 Seal 23 23942 23962 Haste 80120 | 0507144) 5% | 23 23944 23946 PryA WES No: ego) CRED eS aE RUG a No. a ROWaM Nendo aches) an Rall) 23480 | Floe 90135 | 0406 3 30 23484 | Florist 100150 | 0406 3% 38 23486 | Flout 100150 | 0406 31% 38 23488 | Fluid 100150 | 0406 3% 38 23490 | Flux 100150 | 0406 3% 38 23494 | Focus 100150 | 0609 6 23 23528 | Frantic 120180 | 05071%) 3 30 23530 | Freedom 120180 | 050714) 3 30 sees Mieatel ~ busssoass 2436 Sh hl ee 23540 | Fringe 100150 | 0406 3% 30 23542 | Frock 320480 | 1015 3% 38 23544 | Froth 150225 | 050714 3 38 23546 Fruit 70105 | 030414] 234 38 23562 | Fusion 100150 | 0406 314 38 23568 | Gage 100150 | 0406 314 38 13964 Hatchet 100150 | 1624 18 8 23966 | Halter 100150 | 0812 9 15 *23968 | Haven 70105 | 0406 3 23 *23970 | Hawser 70105 | 0406 3 23 *23972 | Hazel 80120 | 050714) 3 23 *23974 | Health 80120 | 050714] 3 23 *23976 | Heart 100150 | 0203 34 - 60 *23978 | Heather 100150 | 0203 34 60 23980 | Hector 100150 | 0812 1% IS 13982 | Hedge 100150 | 1624 18 8 23984 | Heirloom | 100150 | 0812 | 9 15 *Binders Nos. 23968, 23970, 23972, 23974, 23976 and 23978 have sufficient corners, which will be furn- ished free with the Binders. 13904 &F 23966 § 23542 | 23546 23484 pain 23490 Seles 23486 23488 a 23494 me *23968 & *23972 | 38 | *23974 r a are
