(PATENTED.) This non-conducting product is the result of a discovery of the adhesive attraction existing between the tentacle-like barbs of common sponge (which is practically fire-proof) and the fine silky fibres of Asbestos, which is so great that a natural “felting ’’ process takes place between these two ma- terials by mere contact. We have taken advantage of the afinity between these materials, and in adding to the well- known properties of Asbestos the lightness and porosity due to the cellular formation of the sponge we have produced a non- conducting covering with which we have attained results never before accomplished. This covering is light, elastic, strong, durable, and may be used on all steam surfaces com- mon to power plants. It is especially valuable wherever there is danger of injury from motion or vibration. It is formed into cylinders which are cut longitudinally, and caa be readily ‘““sprung’’ over the pipe. This covering 1s finished with a canvas jacket with lap to be pasted, and metal bands, forming a neat finish over joints. In sections three feet long. Elbows, Tees, etc., as supplied with our Fire-Felt Covering will be furnished. See price list, page 4. Prices subject to change without notice. Discounts on application. 8 H. W. JOHNS [1’F’G CO. ASBESTO-SPONGE MOULDED COVERING. (PATENTED.) This form of covering is offered as an inexpensive and effective Moulded Non-Conducting Covering. It 1s fire-proof, and adapted for ordinary steam pressure. It is supplied in sections three feet long, which are provided with canvas jack- ets and metal bands to hold them firmly in place, and can be easily applied by unskilled workmen. We carry in stock sections and fittings up to 12 inches. See price list, page 4. ‘““NATIONAL ”’? COVERING. (PATENTED.) For Low Pressure or Hot Water Pipes. This covering is spe- cially adapted for low pressure steam, 50 lbs. or under, or hot water pipes. It is made of layers of corru- gated Wool Felt and Asbestos Sheathing—these sections are full of confined air spaces, thus making an ex- cellent non-conductor. This covering is supplied in three foot sections, cut length-_ wise to spring over the pipe; strips and staples sent with each shipment. Fittingsare furnished to go over the outside of this Covering, making a very neat finish. We ship this Covering in bundles, thus materially reducing freight and permitting of express shipments at moderate cost. We carry in stock sections and fittings up to 8 inches. See price list, page 4. Prices subject to change without notice. Discounts on application. H. W. JOHNS I1’P’G CO. 9 FROST PROTECTIVE COVERING. (PATENTED.) For Gas or Cold=-Water Pipes. This covering is made in sections three feet long, and is composed of alternate layers of corrugated and plain soft wool felting. It forms the neatest, most efhcient, and econom- ical covering for the prevention of freezing in gas and water pipes that has ever been introduced. It is easily applied in the same manner as our other Sectional Coverings. We also make this covering with: a wrap of canvas or water-proof felt, for the protection of pipes which are exposed to the weather; these are supplied as extras. Elbows, Tees, Valves, etc., to match, fitting outside cover- ing We carry in stock sections and fittings up to 8 inches. See price list, page 4. COLD WATER, AMMONIA, AND BRINE PIPE COVERING. So many difficulties attend the proper covering of cold pipes, and so much mis-information ex- ists on this subject, that we pre- fer to correspond specially with those requiring such goods. We show herewith one of our methods of Brine insulation, comprising a double layer sectional covering, in which all joints are broken and cemented with a water and air proof compound, making it impervious to both. The thickness and arrangement of Brine Pipe Coverings depend upon the tem- perature of the brine, location of the pipes, etc. Prospective purchasers are asked for these particulars. See price list, page 4. Prices subject to change without notice. Discounts on application. 10 H. W. JOHNS IV’F’G CO. «© ZERO” COVERING. ‘Zero’ Covering is made specially for cold-water pipes, to prevent freezing. That part of the covering coming next to the pipe consists of a % inch layer of Hair Felt, around which is wrapped layers of corrugated wool felt- ing to a thickness of 34 inch, making the whole covering 1% inches thick. Supplied in three-foot sections. There is pasted firm- ly to the covering a strong canvas with laps at end and for closing seams; metal bands with which to hold the covering in place accompany each shipment. When Zero Covering is used out of doors it should be thor- oughly painted with two coats of our Water-proof Composi- tion, price per gallon 55 cents. One gallon is sufficient to cover 100 square feet of surface one coat. See price list, page 4. ‘¢CHAMPION’’ SECTIONAL COVERING. This covering is made expressly for very low pressure steam (25 lbs.) or hot- water pipes. The in- ner layer which rests against the pipe is made of Asbestos, and (its Cybele Ieee S. making the covering about inch thick, are composed of cor- rugated wool felting. It is neatly covered with a canvas jacket with flaps to be past- ed over the seams and ends. The covering is held firmly to the pipes with metal bands which accompany covering. Sheet Fire-Felt is a firm, even block of Fibrous Asbestos, and is the same material as our Fire-Felt Pipe Covering de- scribed on page 5. Itis very light in weight, is singularly adapted to all conditions of heat insulation and will re- main intact and effective j when other materials crack and disintegrate. It does not sag, settle, or powder. leone Malrekere Pipes, Boil- ers, Drums and other large sur- jfaces Fire- # Felt is fur- nished in sheets, flat or curved, which can be removed and replaced without injury. It is especiaily valuable for marine and other high-pressure surfaces. This cut illustrates a boiler covered with 1% inch Fire-Felt, over which is a jacket of canvas duck sewed and banded on. Asbestos Cement Felting adheres very readily to Sheet Fire-Felt, and can be used over sheets with excellent results in place of canvas if so desired. See price list, page 12. These sheets, 24x36 inches, are easily applied, and owing to their extreme lightness in weight do not sag the iron, and remain permanently in place. Where thorough insulation is looked for we use from 11% inch to 2 inch sheets; wired fast and finished with a coat of our As- bestos Cement Felting. The expansion and contraction of large sheet-metal surfaces are often so great as to injure cement cover- ings. In placing Sheet Fire- Felt next to the a8 ae aie is entirely overcome. Dry Houses, Ceilings, etc., can be lined in this way. This cut represents a flue covered with 1% inches of Sheet Fire-Felt and Hexagonal Wire Cloth, finished with our As- bestos Cement Felting. ASBESTOS FIRE-FELT LOCOMOTIVE LAGGING, (PATENTED.) Showing application of Asbestos Fire-Felt Lagging. This is a fire-proof felt composed entirely of Asbestos Fibre, and is similar in texture to Hair Felt, except that the outer surface is made hard enough to give a firm foundation for the iron jacket. It contains no lime, clay, or powder of any sort, and is con- sequently clean to handle and free from dust. Thus it com- bines the cleanliness and convenience of wood with the fire- proot indestructible qualities of Asbestos. As a fire-proof non-conductor of heat, it has no equal, and the felted structure of the material renders it proof against displacement by vibration. No heat is required in boiler while applying, and the sections can be removed and replaced with- out injury. See page 15 for prices. Prices subject to change without notice. Discounts on application. H. W. JOHNS IV’F’G CO. 15 ASBESTOS FIRE-FELT LocomMoTivE LAGGING—Continued. BINDING WIRE. ASBESTOS FIRE*FELT Locomotive LAGGING H.W. JONNS MFG Co. Fire-Felt Locomotive Lagging is made in blocks of standard size 6x36 inches, and of any thickness from }g-inch up. Blocks will, however, be made to dimensions required by blue print, curved to radius and of such varying thickness as to make a uniform surface when applied. Lagging is applied in the following manner : A wire cable is passed around boiler, drawn taut and securely fastened at both ends, after which the binding wire is attached to the cable at the lowest point at which lagging is to be applied. The cables should be spaced two (2) inches within the ends of lagging, as shown in cut, and one midway between the two. The application of the lagging may then be begun, starting at the bottom and building up. Hold the first block of lagging in place; pull binding wire attached to middle cable over block and engage it in hook attached to cable and draw bind- ing wire taut and bend up, which will hold lagging in place until the other two binding wires have been similarly drawn over lagging and engaged in hooks, when the next section may be applied. This novel method of application does away with protruding hooks and iron banding, leaving a smooth surface for the iron jacket and effecting much saving in time. A strong, flexible, durable product, made in sheets to any desired thickness from Asbestos and Sponge. Similar in con- struction to the Asbesto-Sponge Felted Covering described on page 7 of this Catalogue. It is an insulating sheet second to none, and valuable for uneven surfaces, as the laminations of the material permit of the sheets being separated in layers, whereby all seams may be lapped and joints closed, Being very elastic, it will yield without injury to the expansion of the iron. The Asbesto-Sponge Felted Lagging was found, at the recent Chicago & Northwestern Railway Tests, to be superior to all competing Laggings, as a non-conductor of heat. This is a fire-proof Felt, composed entirely of Asbestos, and is similar in texture to hair felt. The importance of covering hot-air pipes in cellars is not generally appreciated. Tons of coal are wasted yearly in each house containing a furnace, the hot air passing out to overheat the cellar, the rooms upstairs suffering in proportion. Asa protection against cellar fires due to over-heated flues, it is invaluab'e. The lightest cov- ering for a hot-air pipe should hs re be #5-inch Roll Fire-Felt. This MALREE 2 LAAE DIVE material is easily cut, passed over the pipe and wired in place. On furnace use 44-inch Roll Fire-Felt, or, for the best possible protection, use 1-inch Sheet Fire-Felt, and finish with Cement Felting. The practice of wrapping hot-air pipes with Asbestos Paper (1.e., Building Felt) we cannot endorse. It does not sufficiently insulate the heat, and cannot prove satisfactory. Our Cement Felting is composed almost wholly of Asbes- tos fibres and forms a light, porous material, partaking of the nature of a felt and a cement. Uses: It is an efficient non-con- ducting covering for Boilers, Domes, and irregular surfaces. How Furnished : This Ce- ment is furnished dry, in bags; one bag containing sufficient material for covering about 40 square feet of flat surface, 1 inch thick. Mixing : It should be mixed with water to the consistency of ordinary stiff mortar by working it thoroughly with a hoe until the whole mass is perfectly amalgamated. Application : Apply, with a trowel small patches or lumps, to form a rough surface preparatory for the next coatings, after which apply additional coatings, each about one-half inch thick, until the desired thickness is attained. Each coat- ing should be dry before the next is applied, and all but the final coat should be left ‘‘scratched,” that the following coats may more readily adhere. It is desirable to have the surfaces partially heated. Care should be taken not to trowel the cement down hard. This Cement is usually applied about one and one-half inches thick. Wiring: Hexagonal wire, as shown in cut, is often used and sometimes is a necessity, especially on vertical boilers and large heated surfaces subject to vibration. By following these directions the Cement can be easily ap- plied by unskilled workmen. Per bag, weighing about 120] DSi059.=. «<> ae eanenr ares . $3.08 Prices subject to change without notice.
