Los Angeles, California All Rights Reserved THE BATCHELDER TILES A CATALOG OF DESIGNS FOR FIREPLACES WITH A COLOR PUA LE GOR, REPRERENCE HE FIREPLACE is a permanent, built-in feature of a room. Rugs, wall coverings, drap- eries and furniture may be changed from time to time; but the fireplace remains either as a source of perennial satisfaction or as a constant challenge to one’s sense of appro- priateness. If it is thoughtfully chosen it will lend itself gracefully to any reasonable scheme of decoration. A Mantel that is poorly designed, out of scale and too assertive in color will always stand in the way of a restful, decorative treatment in the room of which it is merely a part. If it possesses the virtue of distinction in line, form, and color, it will “fit in” with the room treatment. Distinction can come only from a thoughtful consideration of all the demands of the problem, utility, materials, environment, scale, form, color. Utility demands that the fireplace shall function properly. If it fails in this particular the designer has taken the wrong cross road at the start of the problem. A well built fireplace has two services to perform: —-the smoke should go up the chimney,—the heat into the room. A reversal of these functions is not an uncommon experience and is generally attributable to an improper construction of firebox, throat and chimney. For the average fireplace under normal conditions the general principles outlined in the sketch below will be found applica- ble. Let A equal the height of the firebox,—B the width. The depth C should approximate one-half the width,—although twenty inches will be found a desirable minimum. The throat E should be not less than one-tenth of A,—say three inches in the above example. The dimension D should be at least six inches. The thickness at K should be kept as small as possible. The area of the flue F should be not more than one-eighth, nor less than one-tenth of the % | are inches. The sides of the box L should be drawn in from four to six inches. The curve H at the back of the box is desirable but not essential. Lae The space G serves as a ae a Se 3 smoke chamber with pro- NS vision for keeping any wat- er which may come down the flue from dripping into the firebox. An _ observ ance of these principles may be relied upon for effective service. There are often modifying condi- tions which call for the exercise of judgment be- of = . . Pata Gat yond the definition of a ee + \¥ A WELL BUIIT general statement. | fon HE ee FI RE PLACE Special attention is called to the note in this drawing Page 404 Batchelder Tiles OTE: The colors shown in this plate reproduce Batchelder Mottled Finish Tiles of medium tone in the effects generally used for mantels and fountains. For bath rooms lighter tones should be specified. This material has a dull finished surface free from reflected lights. It is fired to high tempera: tures, insuring a perfect bond between the surface color and the clay body. Orders must state clearly both the number (clay body) and the letter (surface color). Medium tones will be shipped unless we are otherwise instructed. Each unit shown in the plate should be considered as typical of a color effect; we make no guarantee, nor do we think it desirable, to match tile for tile. Batchelder Tiles which refers to the “rough work” and to the finished firebox. Long experience leads us to assert that the finished firebox should be put in after the mantel face has been installed. In other words, the mantel design should not be limited to, or made to adapt itself to the errors of judgment or lack of foresight in building a finished firebox with the rough work of the chim- ney. The mantel is a part of the decorative scheme of the finished house and a final choice is not always possible at the early point of construc- tion when the chimneys are being built. It is sim- pler to make the finished firebox conform to the requirements of the final selection of a mantel than to be held to a mantel design that is dictated by a finished firebox prematurely built. Materials for mantel and fireplace construction are many, but a clay product fired to high tem- peratures appears logical, both from association and durability, and from its unique possibilities in a decorative scheme. The adaptability of our product is evident from a study of this catalog offering, as it does, mantels of terra cotta type involving large pieces and mantels built up from small catalog units. The focal point of interest in any room is the es. mantel. This does not argue that the mantel Mantel No. 350 should so dominate its environment that it is always and persistently the most conspicuous feature in the room. It is only one factor, always relative to other things. Paradoxically, it may be large without being obtrusive, or small without being niggardly. It must appear an inevitable part of the room, not look as if put in as an afterthought. A proper adjustment of scale, form and color is essential. It is the purpose of this catalog to offer a wide range of choice in the selection of an appro’ priate mantel. Reference to the various designs will indicate that they fall under three gen- eral classifications: (1) Spandrels, arches, and hoods built into and flush with the plaster wall, with appropriate hearth and fire box. (2) Mantels of Italian type with pilaster and NOTE: Color Symbols and What They Mean THE NUMERALS 1-2-3-5 each indicates a different clay body, while the letters A-C-D, etc., refer to the surface color. It should be clear in a study of the color plate and the key accompanying it that any desig: nation of color must include both numeral and letter. Clay body No. 1 is a deep red, No. 2 light red, No. 3 buff, No. 5 cream. Surface color “F” is a red brown, “M” orange brown, “A” brown, “OO” grey brown, “O” greenish grey, “D” dull green, “C” green and brown, “E” blue green, “R” greenish blue, “L” light blue, ““H” medium blue, “J” dark blue. “MEDLEY CoMBINATIONS’—Rich and interesting effects may be obtained by using two or more colors in one scheme, particularly with small tile units. We exercise care in the adjustment of these color schemes, elim- inating tiles which show too strong contrast. The smaller the unit the greater the variations may be. We offer the following suggestions for Medley schemes: Tan Medley—SOO—S5SM—‘SA. Brown Medley—5A 3A—5OO. Brown and Tan Medley—5A—53M—5OO — 5O— 3A. Blue Medley—SE — 5R — 5L—5H. Page 405 Page 406 Batchelder Tiles DeEsiGN No. 238. Cotor 5-O—FIREBOX 2 MEDLEY. THIS ILLUSTRATION will serve to give the general effect of a definite color scheme—5-O. This Mantel as well as the others shown in the catalog may be ordered in any of the color schemes indicated on page 404. In this type of mantel the pilasters, lintel and shelf should be limited to one color. In mantels built up from small units, as in No. 255, for example, two or more related colors may be employed to advantage and may generally be found more interesting than the use of one color. Batchelder Tiles Mantel No. 450 lintel’ treatment. (3) Mantels built up from catalog units and plain stock with tile shelves. In mantels of the first type the best effect is obtained when the tile face has a reveal of not over one-quarter inch from the plaster,—see design 350 and similar mantels. Care should be taken that the rough work conforms to dimen- sions shown. The outer edges of the units are not finished to reveal more than one-quarter inch. A shelf not over six inches wide may properly be used with this type of mantel if desired. See Design No. 947, and others of similar type. In the second type of mantel (see Design 450), the firebox is obviously an important part of the design because of its size. It should be interest- ing in design and must be carefully planned from the point of view of utility. If carefully planned a firebox of this size will not smoke and may be depended upon to furnish a maximum of heat. In the third type of mantels (see illustration be- low) a tile shelf is desirable to complete the unity of the scheme. Unless very carefully studied a wood shelf, especially if painted, will detract from the design of the mantel as a whole. A well designed tile shelf is undoubtedly a better solution of the problem, thus completing the entire mantel in one material. Batchelder Colors, and the textures of the tile surfaces, are of such character that they blend unobtrusively with almost any decorative scheme. (Refer to pages 404405.) In Arches, Spandrels, and Mantels involving large units it is best to use one color with its subtle modifi cations of tone, or at the most two related colors, as };OO—5O. In mantels of small units “Medley” schemes are appropriate. They have aot the mellow subdued character of an old Tapes- 4 ee - Si Bete =: try or an Oriental Rug, and bring a rare com- bination of colors to an otherwise interesting mantel. The chief beauty of a Batchelder Mantel is to be found in its carefully studied design and in the adjustment of colors. It commands inter- est without being unduly conspicuous. Its subtle modifications of color blend into almost | | SS eee) any scheme of decorative treatment. If the 1% ashe ¥ color scheme of a room is changed in the course ce ees eee ta Sore of time the Mantel readily adapts itself to new conditions. Its mellow tones harmonize with walls, rugs, and draperies. character without constantly challenging one’s attention. Much of the Mayan work shows positive genius with technique of a high order. A thoughtful stu- dent finds increasing respect for those people in any conscientious effort to adapt their forms and motifs to. a definite project. Any one familiar with Mayan design will rec- ognize the composite character of the fireplace opening illustrated above. We have attempted to work in the spirit of Mayan ornament rather than to merely copy the various symbols pertaining to the fire,—the wind and sun, and the calendar months. Furthermore, we feel that it is unjust to the Mayan sources to simulate crudeness, or the time-worn effects which have been wrought by centuries of exposure in a tropical climate. If this work is worthy of study it is entitled to serious thought and crafts- manlike execution. THIS FIREPLACE is particularly effective in our red clays with blues and greens fired into the background spaces and with stronger glaze tones in the small units. It is dig- nified and colorful. Quotations cover this mantel complete with hearth. Working drawings will be furn- ished showing complete scheme. While this is not a mantel which will be commonly used it is one which permits of many very interesting combinations of color, and in an appropriate environment it may be employed with unique effect. It has an all over textile like design without de- parting from the plastic character of a clay product. NOTES ON SHELVES: Shelf sections are made in maximum units of 12x12. The appropriateness of a tile shelf with nearly all of our mantel designs is obvious. In each mantel we have given careful thought to the type of shelf suitable for each par- ticular design without unnecessarily increasing the variety of profiles.
