To estimate the cost of Elevators, the following information is needed : 1. How many required ? 2. For Passenger or Freight service ? To be operated by water or steam ? 4. Height the car will travel ? 5. Character and cost of car? 6. Size of hatchway or car? Maximum load to be lifted in the car? 8. Maximum speed with average load ? g. Water pressure at Building, if to be oper- ated from street main. 10. Distance from basement floor to bottom of upper tank, if to be operated from tank above ? 11. Steam pressure, if steam elevator or steam pump is to be used ? 12. Plan and section of Building, showing loca- tion of Elevator, also of pump, and upper and lower tanks, if they are to be used, will aid in determining the cost of any plant. 4 il All) ily \ il vam i en DAS AUCSOA-TOW A ‘THE HALE PASSENGER ELEVATOR {ZGA WITH GRAVITY WEDGE SAFETY PLATFORM, On all Passenger Eleyators we use at least four independent lifting cables, each one of them being capable of sustaining several times the maximum load to be raised by the elevator. SAPETIES. AUTOMATIC GRAVITY-WEDGE. 1. Under the Car is a heavy hard-wood Safety-Plank on each end of which is an iron adjustable jaw, enclosing the guide on the guide post. In this jaw is an iron wedge, withheld from contact with the guide in regular duty. Under the wedge is a rocker-arm, or equalizing bar, with one of the lifting cables attached zzdependently at each extremity. The four lifting cables after being thus attached pass over a wrought iron girdle at the top of the car. Each cable carries an equal strain, and the breaking of any one cable puts the load on the other cables, which throws the rocker out of the horizontal position, and forces the wedges on Jofh sides instantly and immovably between the iron jaws of the safety-plank and the side of the guides, stopping the car. It may be raised to any position by the unbroken cables, though it can of be lowered until a new cable is put on. A WARNING SAFETY. 2. Any cable will always stretch before it breaks, which will lower one end of the equalizing safety-bar, and force the wedges on both sides into position. Vo other safely device will give warning in advance. AUTOMATIC GOVERNOR. 3. Our improved Automatic Governor, located on the overhead cross beam at the top of the Building, is operated by an endless cable passing over its driving wheel, with a weighted gin-block in its lower loop, and is connected to the gravity wedges under the car, so as to arrest its descent the moment excessive speed is attained, from azy cause. Pin OW Ate ClcS AE Y.no:L OP 4. We offer the only positive Automatic Stop, as it has no mechanical device of any nature connected with it, is necessarily automatic, and mast work at every full ascent or descent of the car. It is an extension, or apron, on the top and on the bottom of the main piston in the cylinder. Aero ALC. WATER. SHUT -O.REF: 5. Its graduated extremities pass across the supply and exhaust ports at the top and bottom of the cylinder, through which the water is supplied or discharged, and so by stopping the supply of water, gradually retard the speed of the car as it approaches the extreme landings, and stop it at the AT TOP OF SHAFT. Gio Milby VEG EH SAI rh LY: SE oe proper place zxdependently of the operator, hand cable, lever, or other device. ‘There is nothing to get - out of order, or repair, or watch. It is always ready and simply shuts off the water power by which — the car was being moved. WATER SAFETY BRAKE. 6. We always have in use a special Water Safety Brake. By means of a circulating pipe, the © main cylinder, closed at both ends, is always full of water, without regard to where the car may be. Therefore, if the descending car becomes obstructed, or stops from any cause, the piston also , stops, as the water Ree: escape, the car remaining sfationary until the obstruction can be removed, and then continuing its journey as before. AUTOMATIC BUTTON-STOP. 7. A double button-stop with rubber buffer is placed on the hand cable, which will automa 3 stop the car at the upper and lower landings. Lever Operating Device. Special attention is called to our Improved Lever Device, for operating the car, which can te used interchangeably, in conjunction with the hand cable, if desired, and presents to the operator at all times two independent and reliable methods of controlling the Car. It is simple in its construction, operates the car with steadiness and great ease, makes reliable stops at landings, and obviates the — jumping of the car in stopping or starting. a 4 ly ay al — at) a e. me > Information for Architects. From our experience with elevator service, as best adapted to the various buildings in which they are to be placed, we submit some suggestions to architects, builders and owners. EOC Asi OouN:, In planning first-class buildings, no single point is of greater importance in the primary consideration than the location of the elevator plant, since, for buildings of greater height than three stories, the elevator service is generally considered by tenants the most important feature of the building. ‘Io obtain the most satisfactory results, the elevator should be placed directly opposite the main entrance, as near the front of the building as possible, and if several machines are required, they should be banked together, rather than placed in different positions in the building. NUMBER. The number of passenger elevators required depends entirely upon the size and nature of the building under consideration. It is difficult to lay down any rule which may be followed without exception, but in a general way our experience proves that for an average office building, one high speed elevator will serve the requirements of from thirty to forty offices to good advantage. This number will, of course, vary according to the business of the tenants. CAPACITY. It has been found that better service is obtained by passenger elevators adapted to lifting an average load at high speed, than a maximum lifting capacity running at slow speed, as was formerly the construction preferred. While the maximum capacity varies according to existing conditions at a building, we advise for an average office building, a maximum lifting capacity of from 1,500 pounds to 1,800 pounds, with as high speed for an average load of from five to six passengers, as cal be obtained from the power employed. For hotels or mercantile establishments, where slower speed is advisable and larger loads must be lifted, we would not advise a greater maximum lifting capacity than from 1,800 pounds to 2,000 pounds. SIZEVORSC ARS The size of the elevator-car should be no larger than is necessary to accommodate the maximum load to be lifted, calculating two square feet of floor space for each Passeneey and allowing 150 pounds: for the average weight of a passenger. SHARE 0 ReaGacn. 4 In order to allow passengers easy and rapid ingress into, and egress from the car, and thus facilitate the service, it is desirable to make the car greater in frontage than in gsrar For the aver opening not less than three feet in width. SIZE O FesriaAd ChowiAY a The finished dimensions of the hatchway or well-hole in which the car is to run, should when plumbed, eleven and one-half inches in width, and four inches in depth, larger than the size the required car, LOCATION OES CY LIN DER. The elevator machinery may be placed within or adjacent to the hatchway, although it may be located some distance away, if necessary. Better mechanical results are, however, obtained by having the elevator machinery close to the car to be raised. LOCATION OF PUMPS, TANKS AND PIPING. When the tank system is to be used, the pump and tanks should be located as close to elevator shaft as possible, in order to avoid the use of horizontal water piping, thus avoiding unnecess first cost, and loss of power through friction. It is cheaper and preferable to convey steam to pump, than to force water a considerable distance. DESIGN AND COST OF CAR. The design and detail of construction of a car should be left largely to the elevator builder, it is necessarily peculiar, and it is always to the interests of the manufacturers to provide as attrac 1) a car as possible for the money specified. The architect’s specifications should name the amount of mon to be expended on it, always remembering that a handsome car is an attractive feature 2 building. From the large number and variety of car designs that we have,.and are continual preparing, we can furnish hard-wood cars varying in cost, from $250 to $1,000 each. Cars of wroug iron construction cost from $400 to $1,500 each. Wooden cars are preferable where moderate cost _ desired, since they can be made of more showy design at less outlay. With fire-proof constructi however, the iron car is more in keeping. WATER SUPPLY FOR ELEVATOR SERVICE. In cities where high water pressure can be obtained from the street mains, it may be well to operate an elevator from that source, but only if it is to be used moderately. As a rule, it is much more economical and satisfactory to provide a pump and tank plant; thus using the water over and over again, without wastage. The water taken from the city mains carries with it a certain amount of dirt, or grit, which, although almost invisible, is liable to cut the packings, used in elevator machinery, and increase the cost of maintenance, besides affecting the power. The city pressure also varies con- siderably, proportionately affecting the lifting capacity and efficiency of the elevator, while with the tank system absolutely clean water can be used, the pressure always remains constant and reliable, the efficiency is at all times the same, and the cost of operation is very materially less, as no water is wasted. COST OF SERVICE. It is not possible to give an accurate statement of the cost of operating elevators, as the con- ditions vary so materially; the amount of water used depending upon the pressure obtained, the load to be lifted, the height to which the car will travel and the number of trips made. Experience has taught us that in tank pressure systems, where the rise of the car is about 100 feet and the maximum load to be lifted does not exceed 1,800 pounds, the average amount of coal consumed per day for constant service does not exceed 1,200 to 1,500 pounds. ‘This would be increased or decreased in proportion to the economy of your boiler service, the efficiency of those in charge of the plant and the demands upon the elevator. We consider it safe to estimate upon this basis. In street pressure systems, the cost varies so much from numerous causes, that no specific estimate can be made, but it is safe to assume that an elevator, rising 100 feet, usit’g a pressure from the street main of 60 pounds, and lifting a load of 1,800 pounds would use about 260 gallons of water for each trip, and the cost per day would be governed by the number of trips made, and the cost of water per thousand gallons. ‘This cost would be lessened or increased in proportion to the variation of the pressure. Of course, if lighter loads were lifted, and the travel of the cars were less, the cost of operation would be proportionately reduced. COMPRESSION TANK SYSTEM. The open tank on roof or in upper story, or the gravity system, is the one generally in use and preferred, but the closed or compression tank system in basement, though more complicated, may be used where the former is not practicable, or where specially high pressure is desired, and cannot be obtained by gravity. OTHER \PUMPING POWERS. In buildings where steam cannot be obtained, gas engines may be used to furnish the power for driving the ptfmp for lifting the water. The electric motor also is being employed for this duty. i —== os ELEVATOR es PF RC CERO Ati) Nios The architect’s specifications, upon which proposals for elevators are submitted, should state the requirements asked for on folio 3, by which the cost is estimated. If a tank plant is to be used, the pump, tanks (whether of wood or iron), and hydraulic ' to connect the tanks and pumps with the elevator cylinders should also be specified, if to be f by the elevator contractor. The elevator manufacturer should not be asked to include any work that does not pt ANS ee belong to him, such as boiler, gas engine, motor, preparing and enclosing the hatchway, founda for machinery, szpports for tanks, for guide posts or for sheave beams, steam connections to p in electric annunciator, gas fixtures, or any work he does not produce himself, which is outside o building, and can be directly contracted for more cheaply by the owner. We will be glad at all times to furnish estimates, detailed specifications and plans for a of elevator construction. HALE Er evA ror Ce '. = ZETNA, TENN. STEAM AND HYDRAULIC HOISTS. “Etna Iron Co.
