H I S Decree, which is now fomuch talked of in France, being fent, over to me, I thought it would not Be ungrateful to this T eNation to have it reprinted here with an Tranflation. But lel’t {ome unwary Readers might make an ill ufe of it, I judged it needful to pre- parerthemtp it by two Refleétions, which from the reading of the Decree‘ they ought to make. The firfl: is, That thofe monfirous Tenets for which We have fo often heard the Cafuifis of the oman Church , parti=cular1yt‘he Jefuits, .accufed, are no falfe Imputations unjultly laid to their Charge, but are truly delivered by them. This none can have a face to deny any more, fince the c Pope and a Congregation of Cardinals have ga- thered thefe Opinions out of the Books of Cafui{’ts,i and have thus condemned them. So that our Di- vines who have charged that Church for tolerating thefe impious and immoral Doétrines, ate no more to be fufpeéted as falfe Accufers, ‘fince herewe have ~ Witneffes beyond exception, that thelc Opinions have been publickly taught by the Ma{’cers\of the Cafuiltical Divinity among them. Of the followi/ngPropofitions I defire theReader D i A2 » may , r, it C E» The ? F A C E. may confider the 26th and 27th, by which he will fee that thofe Direétors of Confciences teach, That if a man is queflioned whether he has done’, a thing that he really did, he may forfwear it, meaning within himjelf [onto other thing, or any othtrweiy of doing zt, or any ad-' dition to what he jays, in which cafes he does not lie, nor is he perjured : And a icaufe offuch (Ref-ervatiotts, is, when they are nece_/fary to fave our Life, Honour, or Goods, or for ‘any other ah? fofV_irtne 5. fo that the con- cealment of Truthhe judged expedient or defirahle. By this Doétrine, fuppofe a man is examined con- cerning the Murder of Sir Edmund-fury Godfrey, that was privy to it, he may {wear he knows nothing of it, meaning either that he was not unjuftly mur- dered, or that he was not murdered with an ill in- tention, or thathe knows nothing of it fo as to tell, thoie who examine him: And there is a very jufl caufe for ufing thefe Refervations, fince fuch denials are intended to preferve the Lives, Honour, and Goods of Catholicks. Thefe being the Opinions of F their Doé’cors, none can wonder if the People, at great part of whofe Devotion it is to obey their Confefiors, are perfuaded into inch praétices. . l_3ut to this it may be now oppofed, that thefe O- pinions being condemned by the Pope, we need fear the 111 efieéts of them no more. Upon this I {hall make alecond Refleétion, which is no leis clearthan the former, That this Condemnation is [0 lame and d'efe 1.: A CE. ,/See the red to be at leaPc *fcandalaus and pernicious inepia; Li’§iz:“' am. How foftly and mercifully does his Holinefs iiiitieif treat them? To be S~c:ar1dalous and cPernrc1ous, ra- {§’o‘p°e"j§_‘ mounts to no‘~more, biut that {uch Propofitions i’W”"'-”' have ill efletftsg but does not concludethem to be th 7th _ _ y paired on Ill in themfelves. Ifthenthe cafe comes, that chefs me 0- . . ‘A that _Fro- Opinions may have good eflefts, the Pope by 3, 1:3,. g;{;§g;;;d culty .mav difpenfe Wltll them, lince they are not in 555"‘ declared to be in themfelves evil or impious. monatthe F_unera1of All perfons are alfo required neither to defend :,',f,,§‘§,,,, nor publifh them , not reduce them to pra€tice.: gdfiei.’ P‘ This is only a Prohibition, but no Condemnation. ’ The Pains are, Excommunication ip/ta faéio, and they are required in the virtueof a Holy Obedience to do lb no more. Nothing here of the Law of God and Nature, but only Obedience: it Therefore finee the Pope ‘can difpenfei theLaWs of the Church, but more particularly with the Obedience due to himfelf, it is evident from hence that all the ePfeé’t this Decree can have, is onlyto ma-keit necef-i fary for Confellors toprocure a Famlty difpenfing with it, before they may poflefs their Penitents with thele Opinions: which, how eafily it may be ob- tainedsat ‘Rome, is well enough known. 4 So that by this Decree thefe two Points are clearly made out, that fuch Opinions are main- tained by many Cafuills in the Roman Commu- nions and that this notwithllanding they may be . {till taught among them. i ~ s iDE- DECRETUM s.S.D.N.D.LINLNocE%NTI1DIVINA Providentié Paps: XI. quo 65.
