Thornton 104 mmii- i %\i %f Maww Slalliow,y, URING the season of 1887 the performances of Prince Wilkes, White Sox, Sable Wilkes, Honri, Silverone, Da- vid L. and Garnet, have established a fact that the sons of Geo. Wilkes are getting the highest class of race horses that are being produced at the present day. They have inherited his power of transmitting great speed and endu- rance to their offspring. The quality of their get are fully equal, or superior to that of their illustrious sire. This may be accounted for in part by the superior quality of mares now being used for breeding purposes. It is acknowledged by all that George Wilkes was far superior to any other son of Hambletonian, as a sire, and as a trotter, having trotted more heats in 2.30 than all the entire sons of Hambletonian combined, one hundred of which have sired 2.30 performers. The reputation of the Ham- bletonian family will be maintained principally through the Wilkes branch. The question now is, which son of Wilkes is most likely to reproduce the qualities of the family with the greatest uniformity? Alcantara is the only son of Geo. Wilkes having a dam that has produced four in the 2.30 list, with four others nearly ready to enter the list. She is now but sixteen years old, and being a regular breeder, will eventually have a much larger number in the 2.30 list than any other mare. Alcantara showed his ability to produce speed from the start. His first season in the stud he produced four colts only. The first one foaled has a record of 2.2oi, the second 2.25-J- ; the third, a trial in 2.35, will beat 2.30 the coming season ; the fourth, a mare, never harnessed, produced a two- year-old that trotted in 2.40 last season. His full brother, Alcyone, showed his power to transmit speed during his first season's service, by getting Silverone 2.19I, Alcryon 2.23, and Alcyona 2.29. The get of Alcantara show in their races the indomitable courage which he possessed. He obtained his present record at four years old, winning six of the eight races in which he started that season ' While trotting the race in which he obtained his record, he was suffering from a severe injury to his leg, caused by getting hung under the stable door. Only for this ac- cident he would have had a record that season low down in the teens, as he had repeatedly shown one-half mile in 1.06. His sire has more representatives in the 2.20 list than any other. The sire of his dam, Mambrino Patchen, is the sire of more dams of 2.20 per- formers than any other sire. The fact is dawning on the minds of all intel- ligent breeders that the superstructure of first-class trotters must be built upon thoroughbred blood. The breeding of Maud S., Jay Eye See, and Patron is undeniable proof of this fact The third dam of Alcantara Fannie G., by Imported Margrave, IS also the thud dam of the great four > ear-old, Palo Alto, 2.2o|-. ^ m;:m^-- ■- ■- ■- ""- - -'^ % THE HIGHLAWN STALLIONS. USUAL PRIVILEGE OF RETURN. TERMS FOR KEEPING STOCK. % ADDRESS ALL ^ COMMUNICATIONS TO mmsmmm w. The doctrine that we can get the swiftest harness horses by breeding y down instead of up; that we can produce trotters which will cast the 2.o8f ^ record in the shade, without going now and then to plastic thoroughbreds ^ for the form and nerve force which have always been associated with the ^ highest development of speed, is disproved by the records of the past, and ^ reflecting, far-seeing men are not likely to become wedded to it in the future. ^ In Nominee we have the blood of three great performers. He appears to y have inherited the nerve force of Goldsmith Maid, the stride of Lady Thorn ^ and the courage of Lucy. He is a descendant of three of the greatest per- ^ formers of three great families, the Alexander Abdallah, the Mambrino ^ Chief, and the Clay. He should breed well to all classes of mares, as no ^ one strain of blood greatly predominates in his breeding. His conformation y is faultless and his speed quite phenomenal, considering the limited handling ^ he has had. ^4 I SEASON or 1888. ^ Alcantara, $200.00 ^ Nominee, 75-oo P •^ Brood mares, $1.00 per week on grass, $2.50 per week on hay and grain, ^ or $100 per year.
