THEs following Tables are computedl for chains of 100 feet; being the length in ordinary use on XNew-England Railroads-and for a slope of three to two —-this slope being generally taken for the basis of calculation in original estimates. Opposite the number in the first column, denoting the mean depth of cutting, or filling at two adjoining stations, the cubical quantities for the different width of base, will be found under their respective heads. The nnmbers in the tenth column, (headed " Cor.") denote the number of yards to be added for the difference in depth at the twostations, which is uniform for any width of base. For example.-Suppose the depth of cutting at two consecutive stations to be!0 feet and 32 feet, (the base being 20 feet;) opposite. 21 feet the mean cutting, and under 20 feet base, is found 4006 yards; and opposite 22 feet, the difberence in cutting, in the column headed' Cor." is found 224 yards, which added to the 4006, gives 4220 yards, the quantity sought, EXCAVATION AND EMBANKMENT TABLES. Let 71 and m=the side distances; wivthee width of road bed at grade h —center cut or fill. Then eqniv. cut or fill= (=nt-m) (w+-3 Ii) W Or, arithmetically e:rpressed: Multiply the center cut or fill by three; to the product add the width of the road bed at grade; multiply this sum by the sum of the side distances; divide the product by nine; extract the square root of the quotient; and from the square root subtract one-third of the width of the road bed at grade.
