Those not belonging to the Class of that year are separatecd from them by a dash. Where the name of a Meiember is followed by two resicdences, the one immediately after his name is that of his original residence; the other his present residence, so far as is known. The name of the State is omitted after places situated in NewYork. The Society will be obliged by any corrections, or additional information, forwarded to their Corresponding Secretary. NOKTE THE PIr1 BETA KAPPA SOCIETY was founded at WVilliam and MBary's College., in Virginia, in 1776. The Alphas of Connecticut and Hlarvard were organized in 1780, by a Charter from the Alplha of Virginia; the Alpha of New-Hamlpshire in 1787; and the Alpha of NewYork in 1817, as appears from the annexed Charter. The following are the branches of the Society existing at the present time Alpha of Connecticut, at Yale College, New-Haven; Alpha of Massachusetts, at Haarvard University, Cambridge; Alpha of New-Hampshire, at IDartmouth College, Hanover; Alpha of New-York, at Union College, Schenectady; Alpha of Maine, at Bowdoin College, Brunswick; Alpha of Rhode Island, at Brown University, Providence; Alpha of Ohio, at Western Reserve College, Hudson; Beta of Connecticut, at Trinity College, Hartford; Gaimma of Connecticut, at Wesleyan University, Middletown. CHARTER~. ON the first day of May, one thousand eight hundred and seventeen, the " Alpha of New-York" was instituted by the concurring resolutions of the Alphas of Connecticut, Mcf!ssachusetts ancd New-Hampshire, and the following Charter transmitted to the Honorable Chancellor Kent, the Rev. Dr. Chester, and the Rev. Andrew Yates, viz: "To the Honorable JAMES KENT, the Rev. ANDREW YATES, and the Rev. JOHN CHESTER, brethren of the Phi Beta Kappa, the Alpha of Connecticut sends greeting: " Whereas, by the concurring resolves of the Alphas of Connecticut, Massachusetts and New-Hampshire, it has been deemed expedient to establish, in the State of New-York, a branch of the Phi Beta Kappa, in connection with Union Collegee: now, therefore, by virtue and in pursuance of the aforesaid resolves, we do hereby incorporate and establish you, the above-mentioned James Kent, Andrew Yates and John Chester, with such others as you may associate with yourselves, in conformity with the Laws of the Phi Beta Kappa, hereunto transmitted, into a separate and distinct Branch of said Society, to be known and called by the name of the " AL.PHA OF NEW-YORK;" hereby granting unto you, and your successors, all the powers, privileges and benefits thereunto appertainintg, in as full and ample a manner, as we, or our Brethren of MIassachusetts and New-Hampshire enjoy the same.
