FEB 13 Documents Center UNIVERSITY OF MICHGAN Lººs Now 0.5 ºn: DEPOSITED BY UNITED STATES OF AMERICA - Welcome to Upper Souris National Wildlife Refuge The diversity of wetlands, native grasslands, and woodlands found on the Refuge provides excellent wildlife habitat which supports a variety of game animals. The Refuge offers a quality hunting experience for deer, sharp-tailed grouse, Hungarian partridge, and ring-necked pheasant. • ‘º Hunting on the Refuge is in accordance with all North Dakota Game and Fish Department regulations. Check with the Refuge Manager for updated regulations and seasons. Special Refuge Hunting Regulations * The Refuge is open from 5 am to 10 pm. - It is unlawful to carry a loaded firearm in any vehicle on Refuge lands or roads. - Vehicle travel is restricted to public roads and recreation area parking lots. Do not block gates. The use of all-terrain vehicles, snowmobiles, and other off-road vehicles is not allowed. Walk-in access only. m Horses are not permitted on the Refuge. - Camping and open fires are not allowed on the Refuge. m Visitors must take their trash with them when they leave. * Trespassing in closed areas is not permitted. * The areas surrounding the Refuge office and visitor center and residences are posted closed to hunting. State law prohibits hunting within one-quarter mile of an occupied building. - Weapons are not allowed in boats and canoes. - Intoxicated and disorderly conduct is not permitted on the Refuge. Possession of controlled substances is illegal. - Collecting, injuring, disturbing, destroying, or harming any animal or plant, except legally taken fish or game animals, is not permitted. - - - - Artifacts and historic items are protected on Refuge lands by Federal laws. It is unlawful to search for or remove these objects from Refuge lands. Deer Hunting Archery and gun seasons on the Refuge coincide with State hunting season dates. A Refuge permit issued by the North Dakota Game and Fish Department for Unit IIIA2 is required to hunt deer on the Refuge during the 16%-day rifle season. Hunters possessing a State muzzleloader deer permit may hunt without a Refuge permit. Pre-season scouting is allowed only in open public use areas and areas marked “foot traffic only.” Once hunters fill their deer tag, they may not return to the Refuge with a weapon, although they may carry a shotgun while hunting upland game birds in open bird hunting units. .- Portable tree stands are allowed, but they must be removed from the Refuge daily. Only strap-on steps or removable climbing . ladders are allowed. Hunters can carry, drag, or use a cart to remove their deer. Baiting is not allowed. Grouse, Partridge, and Pheasant Hunting Approved non-toxic shot is required when hunting. No other type of shot may be possessed while in the field. Hunting on Unit I is open during the State hunting season. Unit I includes all land north of the township road that runs east of Tolley, across Dam 41, and east to State Route 28. Hunting on Unit II is open during the State hunting season, except it is closed from the first day of State duck season to the last day of State deer rifle season. Unit II includes land south of the township road that runs east of Tolley to Lake Darling Dam. Land South of Lake Darling Dam is closed to all upland game bird hunting. Hunting with dogs is allowed on the Refuge. Blaze orange vest and cap must be worn when hunting game birds during the deer gun Season. It is reached by traveling on U.S. Highway 52 to Foxholm, then north 7 miles on County Road 11. Or, travel 18 miles north of Minot on U.S. Highway 83, then west 12 miles on County Road 6. The Refuge office and visitor center is open from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday, except for Federal holidays.
