Author of the beauti- ful hymn. “My Mother.” She died at Nottingham, England, December 20th, 1866, in her 85th year. A. L. S. 3 pp. 8 vo. Nov. 28, 1866. In which is included in her own handwriting, a copy of the above mentioned hymn, which she says was “Indeed justly true of my own dear mother.” She refers to an article in the Athenæum, suggesting a change in the last verse. “The word vengeance sounded too harsh for the context.” She gives the new version which reads as follows: . - “And would our Father in the skies Look down with pleased or loving eyes, On any one who could despise º A Mother.” - This letter was written only a few weeks before her death. To it is attached her photograph, a sketch of her life and an account of the literary family to which she belonged, taken from the Athenæum of Dec. 26, 1866, and a mourning card announcing her decease. tº- - - - - - $25. - glaria ãhereia, Empress of Germany, Queen of Hungary, Archduchess of Aus. tria, etc. Born 1717. Married Francis of Lorraine 1737, (who died 1765.) Maria Theresia died 1780, having reigned forty years. L. S. in German 2 pp. 4 to, Aug. 2, 1769. It is written on paper bordered with black and with black seal. It is well known that she always wore mourning after the death of her husband. This letter is signed worthy of the Empress Queen. It closes thus, “Yours with Imperial, Royal and Archducal Grace.” And then in autograph follows:– “Wohlgewogen, - - MARIA THERESIA.” This autograph is accompanied by a superb portrait of the Empress, clad in deep mourning and wearing the historical black pearl necklace; also a portrait in rich court dress. - $26. Among the most interesting Autographs in this collection are those of - jīlbert of - Ausſia, (Surnamed the Pious.) Son of Maximilian II Emperor of Germany. Splendid Document Signed. , 1 p., folio with address, Dated Oct. I 2, 1683. With perfect seal. Born November 13, 1559, and died without heirs at Brus- sels, in 162 I. And his wife ... Aſsabella of \matria, (Clara Eugenie) She was the daughter of Philip II. of Spain, and his wife Elizabeth of Valois, and brought her husband as dower, Burgundy, the Netherlands and seventeen Provinces. Reigned with her husband over the Low Countries, from 1598, to 162 I. She was born Aug. I 2, 1566, and died Nov. 29, 1633. She often accom- panied her husband in campaigns against the Dutch. At the famous seige of Ostend, she swore never to change her linen until the place was taken. The precise epoch at which she made this strange vow is not known ; but Ostend defended itself three years, three months and three days. The linen of this Princess had turned quite yellow. This particular shade was called ever after, “Couleur Isabelle.” The portraits which accompany these documents are in the superb court dress of the period, and are after paintings by Peter Paul Rubens. MEMORANDA. *Uſhe lard's #rager. A remarkable collection written in sixty-seven languages, almost in every instance by natives of the respective countries, and often by persons of distinction. Several of them were beautifully transcribed at the College Propaganda at Rome, by students from oriental countries. Among the most curious and interesting is the one in hieroglyphics, written at Thebes, Egypt, February 9th, 1865, by Mr. E. Smith, an American resident of that place. Some were written in monasteries, others by diplo- matic agents. One was written in the convent of Mar Saba, Palestine, December 26, 1859. The one in Abyssinian was writ- ten by Madame Gobat, wife of the Protestant Bishop of Jerusalem. The one in the language of the old testament, is written by the Very Reverend Bernard Smith, D.
