zº, 2 sº // 3 -º , L - #2 **24 H H 2 BULLETIN The Hadley Climatological Laboratory University of New Mexico. VOLUME III., NUMBER 5. JANUARY, 1903. METEOROLOGICAL TABLES. BY C. EDW. MAGNUSSON, PH. D. ºmºmºmºmºmº . A voluntary station in connection with the U. S. Weather Bureau was established at the University of New Mexico and observations begun January 1, 1893. The sta- tion is not as complete as it should be, especially for the efficient working of the Hadley Climatological Laboratory; but it is hoped that a thoroughly equipped station will be established in the near future. During the ten years of the station's existence, the ob- servations and reports have been made gratuitously, first by Prof. R. M. Gaines (1893-1895) and second, by the custo- dian, Mr. M. Custers (1895-1902). For this laborious task much credit is due. It has been thought worth while to bring together, for ready reference, the data thus far obtained. For this pur- pose each year's observations are tabulated separately. Also summaries for the ten years by months and by years are given on separate pages. The tables follow this in- troduction, and speak for themselves. The following facts are especially prominent: The prevailing wind is south, while the cold north winds are rare. The average number of clear days during the year is 219.4, partly cloudy 104.9, while only 38.4 are cloudy. (For 24 days in the ten years the records are wanting, as shown in the tables.) On “partly cloudy” days the sun is, on an average, hidden by clouds half the time. Hence, to find what part of the year the sun has been shining unobstructed by clouds, one-half of the 104.9 days are added to the “cloudy” 2 and the remaining to the “clear” days. Calculating upon this basis it is found that this locality has, during the ten years recorded, been flooded with direct sunlight almost exactly 75 per cent of the time the sun has been above the horizon. The low annual precipitation is also quite remarkable, being 7.44 inches. Most of this precipitation falls during the heated period of July and August and, from the health point of view, is most welcome, since it serves to reduce the otherwise high temperature of the period. As a result the temperature is not as high as is expected by persons not familiar with the facts. Only three times within the ten years has the temperature passed 1000 F. (June, 1898, 1949; July, 1899, 1040; June 1900, 1010). Only once has the temperature fallen below 00 F. (Feb. 1895–100). Presenting Meteorological Data for 1893. TABLE I.
