Sir: In obedience to instructions from the War Office, the Adjutant General respectfully submits the following REPORT, relative to the land forces employed in the late war with Mexico, being the information called for by the resolution of the House of Representa- tives of July 31, 1848. The tabular statements, A, B, C, and D, exhibit in detail the army statistics from the commencement of hostilities on the Rio Grande, April 25, 1846, to the close of the Avar in July, 1848. The tables have been prepared with great care, and the information they furnish, derived from the reports, returns, &c., received at the Adjutant General's ollice, is as accurate and precise as the circumstances of the service would permit. Reference to these tables presents the following results: I. — The Regular Army. 1. Statement A shows the strength of the army at the commence- ment of hostilities with the republic of Mexico, in April, 1846, (7,244); the regular force on the frontier of Texas, May, 1846, present and absent, (3,554); the number of troops joined the several divisions of the army in Mexico, including recruits, (27,470,) of which 15,736 were of the old establishment, 11,186 new regiments, and 548 marines; which added to the force on the Rio Grande in May, 1846, makes the whole number of Doc. Table B presents a detailed view of the number of officers and men of the regular army killed and wounded in battle, and died of wounds, from the first conllict of the reconnoitring party, under Captain Thorn- ton, on the left bank of the Rio Grande, April 25, 1846, to the termination of hostilities in 1848, in which the battles, and the regiments and corps engaged, are specified. II. — TriE Volunteer Service. 1. Statement exhibits in detail, by States, regiments, and corps, tlie whole number of volunteers mustered into the service from May, 1846; of which 16,887 are mounted men, 1,129 artillery, and 55,244 infantry; making an aggregate of 73,260, including 3,131 commissioned officers. From this number it is proper to deduct the forces called out neither by authority of the War Department, nor under the act of May 13, 1846, and also the number mustered and paid, but soon after discharged as super- nwmerary. In this class are embraced the three and six-months men, two regiments of twelve-months men from Ohio and Missouri, and one company from Iowa, amounting in all to 14,448; of which 2,778, not being required to proceed to the seat of war, were discharged (except the company) a few days after being mustered into service. Deducting this class from the aggregate mustered into service, (73,260,) the force enrolled under the act of May 13, 1846, and under the 5th section of the act of March 3, 1847, (which authorizes the President to accept the services of 4 Doc. Desertions, 2,730. 3. Recapitulation of the casualties incident to the whole number of vol- unteers, under various periods of service, is as follows: Discharges before the expiration of the term, 9,109; of which 7,200 were for disability. Deaths, 7,015, to wit: ordinary, 6,210; killed in battle and died of wounds, 007; accidental, 192. Resignations, 279. Desertions, 3,870. 4. Table D presents a detailed view of the officers and men of the vol- unteer service killed and wounded in battle and died of wounds, in which the various battles, the several regiments engaged, and the States where raised, are specified; and may be regarded as supplemental to statement C, as table B is to statement A, with respect to the regular forces. 5. Tiie numbers reported under the heads ^'■uiounded'''' and '■'■ died of wounds,^'' in each particular battle or afiair, in tables B and D, although correct as exhibited in the field reports of the commanding generals for- warded immediately after the action, do not agree in the aggregates with those in the statements taken from the muster rolls and returns subse- quently made up and forwarded to the department, because many reported in the first despatches as being ^'■wounded'''' die of their wounds perhaps weeks alter the action. It is believed that many who died of wounds are reported on the rolls as cases of ordinary deaths. It is proper also to state, that the discharges on account of disease or disability, and the num- ber of ordinary deaths reported to the Adjutant General's olilce, and ex- hibited in the table, must be much less than the actual loss, owing to the missing muster rolls and returns, which could never be obtained, although repeatedly'" written for to commanders of regiments and corps.
