A Partial Index to the Proceedings of the Society from its foundation in 1812 to 1880 has been prepared by Stephen Salisbury, Jr., to which it seemed advisable to add a list of all the Publications from the first-named date to April, 1883. This list is now published in a separate form for the convenience of those not desiring the volume containing the " Partial Index." Many of the pamphlets mention i herein are out of print, and of others but few remain in the possession of the Society. Prices have been affixed to such as can now be supplied, but of several the number is very limited. The more prominent of the publications are the six volumes of the '•'• Archieologia Ameri- cana," the first of which was published in 1820, at the expense of Isaiah Thomas, the founder and first President of the Society. In October, 1822, the Worcester members of the Publishing- Committee issued a circular with a " Proposal for continuing the publication of the Transactions and Collections of the American Anticjuarian Society, * * * the work will be com- menced as soon as sufficient encouragement is obtained, and to be continued at indefinite jjeriods as material shall be collected." The price to be "• at the rate of three dollars for 400 pages, including engravings." The second volume was issued in 1836, the third in 1837, the fourth in 1860, and the fifth and sixth in 1874. These volumes are devoted to archaeological and historical subjects, or reprints IV of rare books aud manuscripts, the last two containing the "History of Printing in America," by Isaiah Thomas, being a reprint, with additions, corrections and notes, of the original edition of 1810. In the last volume is a very full list of books printed in America previous to 1776, which was begun by Dr. Thomas, was continued and extended by S. F. Haven, Jun., M.D., and completed by Samuel F. Haven, LL.D., late Libra- rian of the Society. The first publication of the Society was issued in 1813, from which time till October, 1849, the Proceedings were published only occasionally. Beginning with the annual meeting in Octo- ber, 1849, the Proceedings of the Society at its annual and semi- annual meetings, have been regularly printed. They included, besides the ordinary reports of the officers, papers of antiquarian or historical interest prepared by the members of the Society. Many of the reports of the Council contain biographical notices and memorials of deceased members of the Society, and add largely to the value of these publications as works of reference. The only printed catalogue of the books in the Library, a volume of 571 pages, was issued in 1837. In order to render this publication more complete, a list of the reprints from the "Proceedings" has been added, and includes all such publications as have come to the notice of the compiler. Those desiring any of the publications of the Society should address the Librarian, Edlito M. Barton, at Worcester. The prices here given are liable to change as the supply of any of the numbers becomes small. PUBLICATIONS OF THE SOCIETY. Aroh^ologia Americana.
