MacDougal THE WOODLAWN CEMETERY THE CEMETERY can be reached by the following routes: Harlem Railroad from the Grand Central Station (42d Street) to Woodlawn Station; West Mount Vernon Trolley from the Third Avenue Bridge (Third Avenue and 129th Street, marked Woodlawn) ; Jerome Avenue Trolley from Central Bridge {155th Street and Eighth Avenue) ; Third Avenue Elevated Road to Bronx Park Station, thence by West Mount Vernon or Yonkers Trolley, marked Woodlawn ; Lenox Avenue Subway to 149th Street, thence by Elevated and Trolley; Carriages via Webster or Jerome Avenues. Transportation charges by the New York Central Railroad Company (Harlem Division) : For Special Funeral Train (the car "Woodlawn" to the Cemetery and return, $60.00; the car "Wood- lawn" attached to passenger train, $40.00; for ordinary car attached to a passenger train, $50.00; for the conveyance of remains from New York to Woodlawn, $1.00; railroad fare to the Cemetery and return (excursion ticket), 35 cents. A fifty-trip ticket is issued to one family for $8.75, and is good for one year from time of purchase. Woodlawn Station is provided with a passenger elevator and commodious waiting-rooms, one of the latter being especially set aside, with a maid in attendance, for the comfort and convenience of our patrons. The Woodlawn Cemetery was organized December 29, 1863, under the "Act authorizing the Incorporation of Rural Cemetery Associations," passed April 27, 1847, ^'"^^ ^^^ several amendments thereto. The Statutes contain every desirable provision for the safety, permanence and government of the Cemetery, and the rights of lot-owners are carefully guarded. The Statutes of the State of New York provide that no street, road, avenue, or other public thoroughfare shall be opened through the Cemetery without consent of the directors and of two-thirds of the lot-owners, and then only by special permission of the Legisla- ture of the State. Of the entire area ot the Cemetery, about two hundred acres, or one-half, has been improved. A considerable portion of the above is yet unsold, and is available for intending purchasers, offering exceptional opportunity for the selection of choice sites, as well as lots of more moderate cost. General care is given to all lots without any expense to the lot-owner. The lands acquired by the Cemetery are to be disposed of and used exclusively for the burial of the dead. Such lands are forever exempted from assessments and public taxes, and also from liability to be sold on execution, or for payment of debts due from any individual proprietor. Single grave for an adult, and opening, $51.00. Single grave for a child under ten years of age, and opening, $41.00. Single grave and opening in Honeysuckle plot, including founda- tion for headstone, $75.00. Headstone must not exceed one foot in height and no mounds will be allowed. Only one grave-marker can be placed at a single grave, which must not exceed two feet in height above ground, or be over two feet in width for an adult, and eighteen inches for a child, and such stone must be so cut as to set in the ground not over eighteen inches and be of full size the entire depth. Should a lot be afterwards purchased, the full cost of the gra\"e vacated will be allowed, that is, $44.00 for an adult's and $35.00 for a child's grave, less the usual charge for opening the new grave. PRICES OF LOTS Circular Lots, ranging in size from 1,000 feet to 10,000 feet, may be had at the rate of $3.00 to $5.00 per square foot, according to location. Avenue Lots at $1.75 to $5.00 per square foot. Path Lots at $1.75 to $4.00 per square foot. Grass Path Lots at $1.50 to $3.00 per square foot. Lots Admitting Ten Graves $528 and upward. Eight Graves, $390 and upward. Six Graves, $300 and upward. Four Graves, $195 and upw^ard. Three Graves, $150 and upward. RECEIVING TOMB CHARGES A deposit is required, for each adult, $30.00; for each child under ten years, $24.00; which will be returned in full on removal within ten days to a lot thereafter purchased in the Cemetery; otherwise a monthly charge of $5.00 for each adult and $4.00 for each child will be deducted from the deposit. For removal from the Cemetery an additional charge of $5.00 for an adult or $4.00 for a child will be made. NEW RECEIVING TOMB CHARGES A deposit of $30.00 is required, which will be returned in full on removal within ten days to a lot thereafter purchased in the Cemetery; otherwise a monthly charge of $10.00 will be deducted from such deposit. A deposit of $150.00 is required for Special Crypt. A monthly charge of $50.00 will be deducted from such deposit. OPENING TOMBS AND GRAVES IN PRIVATE LOTS Opening tomb, $7.00. Opening adult grave, usual depth (six feet), $7.00. Opening grave for a child under ten years of age, usual depth (six feet), $6.00. Opening grave for steel vault or concrete vault extra charge of $5.00. Slate burial case, including opening of grave, $40.00. Double extra-sized slate burial case, $50.00. Evergreen lining, $10.00. A soldering charge of $3.00 will be made for hermetically seal- ing zinc-lined cases. The bricking charge will be $5.00 and $7.00, according to the size of the catacomb to be sealed. Use of the hearse when funerals are met at the Woodlawn Sta- tion may be secured at a cost of $5.00. Use of a wagon for the conveyance of flowers from the Wood- lawn Station may be secured at a cost of $2.00. Use of the Burial Lowering Device may be secured at a cost of $2.00. Double charge for opening grave for removal made on Sunday or Monday. The Cemetery is situated on the line of the New York. & Harlem Railroad, at Woodlawn Station, in the 24th Ward (Borough of Bronx), New York City. The grounds, which contain four hun- dred acres, were laid out and the improvements begun in the Spring season of 1864. The first interment was made in the Cemetery on January 14, 1865. Total number of interments in the Cemetery to January i, 19 15, is 88,575. The Cemetery provides a shelter tent, matting and chairs at the time of interment, for the comfort of the lot-owner and those attending, without any extra expense. To serve the best interests of Intending purchasers, it has been arranged to have our representative at the Cemetery at all times {Sundays excepted) to wait upon those Interested, so as to give them such information as they may desire and show the lots which have been prepared for sale, and a conveyance will be in attendance for their accommodation. By appointment, our representative will meet parties at Wood- lawn Station, or at the Jerome Avenue entrance, with a conveyance, or will call at the office or residence of any one so desiring.
