V SAMUEL WHITMORE 18 12 18 9 3 ..J^/ye.. Whitmore Genealogy A RECORD OF THE DESCENDENTS OF FRANCIS WHITMORE of Cambridge, Massachusetts (1625-1685) 1907 Gift Author (Perion > s -9 I ul TO THE MEMORY OF MY GRANDFATHER Samuel OTfiitmore WHO INSPIRED THE DESIRE FOR THE RESEARCH THIS UTTLE BOOK IS DEDICATED XT may not be improper to state that this genealogy has been the result of several years of inquiry and labor. It had been my desire to carry down to the present generation the Whitmore Genealogy compiled by the Hon. William H. Whitmore in 1855, giving with it as many brief sketches of the family as possible, that it might have an added interest for the reader. Serious illness has, however, made it imperative that this work must be put aside for several years, or given to you in its present condition, and it has seemed to me wiser to adopt the latter course, trusting that some day I may be able to give the work more nearly the form and character originally planned. The records have, as far as possible, been verified with Town Records, and when this was not practicable, records have only been accepted from a member of the immediate family, who was known to be careful, and these in turn checked with records from another member of same family. Family Bibles or tomb- stones have not been considered, except where no other source of information existed. That there will be errors I well know, but have tried to make them as few as possible, and for them ask your indulgence. Acknowledgment is due to the Hon. William H. Whitmore, whose Whitmore Genealogy, as previously stated, is the founda- tion of this work; to Miss Charlotte Rice Whitmore and Mr. Henry Rogers Whitmore for their helpful interest and assistance incompleting the records of their lines; to every Whitmore, for, by their willing response to inquiries and the cordial inter- est shown, they have made the work possible. It has been a deep pleasure to me through its entire growth, and the better acquaintance with my family and many delight- ful friends acquired during these years are ample reward for the labor. I earnestly hope that some one who may, perhaps, get some aid from these pages, will be moved to taste this pleasure for themselves, and carry on the work. Jessie Whitmore Patten Purdy. (V) ^^^^HE name Whitmore is derived from a Gothic king,' ■ ^ J Wid( spear) -Mar (famous), famous-with-the-spear. As ^^^r early as 1215, at the signing of the Great Charter at Runymeade by King John, the name appears in English records. Whitmore Hall is situated in the village of Whitmore, Stafford- shire, England, 146 miles from London, and five miles from New-Castle-under-Lyme. By a marriage between the families of Whitmore and Mainwaring the Manor passed into the suc- cession of the Mainwarings, who held it in 1852. It is said that a direct lineal descendant of the Whitmores occupies it at this date. The early proprietors of the Manor were called Lords of Whytemore. John DeWhitmore was Mayor of Chester, 1369- 1372, and Sir George Whitmore was Mayor of London in 1632. From the Whitmores of England came the family of Whitte- more, who changed the spelling of the name from Whitmore, and while in this country they are a distinct family, they have the same origin. While it has not been possible to trace the English origin of the American family of Whitmore, the similarity in family names leaves little doubt they were from the Staffordshire Whitmores. Tradition says that two brothers, Sir George and John, came to this country in the early 1630's. Sir George, a bachelor, was a government officer in Nova Scotia, and lived at Halifax. While on a voyage from Halifax to Massachusetts, supposedly to settle an estate on his brother, he was drowned. A field in Nova Scotia bears the name of Whitmore's Field. Mr. Edwin P. Whitmore, in 1891, then at the age of 83, writes: "I remember hearing my grandfather tell of an advertisement calling on all people of the name of Whitmore in the States and Provinces to claim certain moneys or property belonging to said Sir George." (vll) That John Whit more (called the lost brother) came to this country in the 1630's we know. In what part of the Colonies he first landed we do not know, but he appears on the records of Wethersfield, Connecticut, as early as 1638. His lot of 54 acres at that place was sold to Robert Treat. He removed to Stamford in 1641, and was one of its first founders and settlers. His name is on the second and third lists of the Colonists; was given in the first distribution of land ten acres; admitted Free- man, 1642; Deputy to General Court October 27, 1643; Repre- sentative to New Haven Assembly in 1647. Was killed by the Indians in 1648. This act was not a case of private hatred, but seems to have been the deed of the whole tribe, and the Colony was moved to unite with that of New Hampshire in a just revenge. Colonial Records of Connecticut and Trumbull's Colonial Recollections: "This Courte, taking into serious con- sideration what may be done according to God in way of re- venge of the bloude of John Whitmore, late of Stamford, and well weighing all circumstances, together with the carriages of the Indians (bordering thereuppon) in and about the premisses: doe declare themselves that they do judge it lawful and accor- ding to God to make a War uppon them . " A committee was sent to New Haven next day to confer with the rest of the Magis- trates, and "return with what convenient speed they may." — Trumbull's Col. Rec, v. 1, p. 197. John married in England. The name of his wife cannot be learned. He married, second, in this country, the widow Jes- sup, who brought him wealth. By his first wife he had born in England — Thomas, 1615. Married Sarah Hall. Lived in Middleton, Connecticut. He changed the name to Wetmore, and is the ancestor of that fam- ily, who have retained the name as Wet- more. Anne, 1621 . Married February 16, 1644, George Farrar . Mary, 1623. Married October 23, 1647, John Brewer. Francis, 1625. John, 1627. Died at Stamford, 1650. That this son (Francis, 1625) is the Francis of Cambridge there can be no doubt, as Francis of Cambridge, on afiidavit, (vill) gives his age as 1625, and every new research strengthens the belief in this theory. In his later years, Mr. William H. Whit- more accepted this belief, so we can safely consider John our first ancestor. As, however, there is no positive proof, I have, for the sake of accuracy, treated Francis of Cambridge as the first ancestor. In all my research I have found our ancestors honest, trust- worthy, enterprising and influential, interested in all that meant the good of their community and country — all true men and women, worthy examples for this generation to follow. (Ix) FIRST GENERATION 1 Francis Whitmore — Bom in England 1625. Died at Cambridge October 12, 1685. Married Isabel Parke, daughter of Richard and Margery Crane Parke. Francis came to this country probably during 1630's, and had established his residence at Cambridge prior to 1648, as about this time he married, at that place, Isabel Parke. Brooks, in his history of Medford, tells us he owned property in Cambridge near the Plains, Charlestown near the Mene- tomie River, near Dendruck Meadows ; also in Medford and Lexington. His house stood on the dividing line between Lexington and Cambridge, and is mentioned in the Act of Division. His name, with that of his wife, appears on a petition in favor of an old woman charged with being a witch, so he can hardly have been of the extreme Puritan Party, though a mem- ber of the church. OJ^ 13 He served in King Philip's War ; was Selectman and Constable in 1668 and 1682. In his will he makes provision for the education of his chil- dren, thus early evidencing that regard for education that is so marked a family trait. This document, which is interesting in that it gives us a light on the character of our first American ancestor, is given in full in the appendix. 14 SECOND GENERATION 1-3 Lieut. A man of quiet taste, he always evinced an earnest, intelligent interest in the affairs of the church and town. He did not care for public life as typified by office, and, while ever willing to accept his share in the work for the interests of the community in every line, his inclination was for a quiet life, which he devoted to the improvement of his property, and the care and education of his children. An honest citizen who did his duty as he found it, finding his reward in the respect and aflection of his home circle. 189-299 William 6 - (Stephen 5, Francis 4, John 3, John 2, Francis 1) Born at Bowdoinham June 11, 1768. He lived to the ripe age of nearly 94 years, and left behind him a family of six sons snd three daughters, but one of whom (Chad bourne, who died at the age of 67) failed of the three score years and ten, a family if which the ten members attained an average age of 82. Nathaniel Whitmore, who died at Gardner in February, 1900, at the age of 88, left behind him a name that stood high in the ranks of his profession (the law) in his State. Be- ginning the practice of law at Gardner in early life, he maintained his resi- dence there. His activities were not however con fined to his own section, for during his long life his practice was so wide that few of the courts of Maine failed to show some record of his activity. Unmarried he made his home with his sisters, Philena, Hannah and Sarah, none of whom mar- ried. Of this group Sarah alone remains, now nearly 92 ; she is the oldest living descendant of Francis. She occupies the old home surrounded bj all the familiar objects of a long life ; she still directs the management of her home and interests. It was my privilege to have some correspondence with her in 1905, and in the late fall of that year spend an hour at her home. The deep interest she has in all that pertained to the family and her unfailing youth and interest in all the matters of the day will always be a pleasant memory. 189-302 Jonathan Wins 6— Born at Bowdoinham August 22, 1773. It was not, however, a mere boyish love of adventure that moved him, but a serious intention of making it his profession, for, with the Whitmore thoroughness, we find him between trips going to a teacher whom he engages to teach him navi- gation. By his fellow-captains and his owners he was always considered an able sailing master. He retired about the time of his marriage, and devoted the rest of his life to the bringing up of his families. Besides his profession of sailing master, he found time to make himself master of crafts. 69 194-326 Creighton 6 —Born at Bath March 19, 1799. Died March (John 5, Francis 4, John 3, 24,1850. H., where his childhood was passed. At the age of sixteen he began teaching in North Charleston, N. H., to which place his father had moved. He taught the winter school there successfully as long as he remained at home. Later he took up mercantile life in Springfield, Vt., where he married the daughter of his partner and made his home as long as his wife lived. After her death he settled all business and went to New York City, where he re- mained almost to the close of his life. His was a quiet but very busy life, being temperate in every particu- lar. Cheerfulness, happiness and unselfishness were a part of his religion. 82 He was fond of literature and study, spending much time in genealogical research, A letter written when nearly 84 showed rare literary ability for his advanced age. He was charitable in his judgments and helpful to the young. Many who went to him for advice received substantial aid if it was needed. For nearly fourteen years he was connected with the University Pub- lishing Co. in New York City. At the time of his death, a set of resolu- tions was issued showing grateful appreciation of his services as President and Trustee. His last investment was in a large farm in New Jersey, where he made a home for his children and grandchildren. Later the death of his brother Horace obliged him to spend much time in California. He crossed the continent many times, and was at home when the last change came, January 12, 1892. 258-411 Hamlin 6 —Born March 5, 1809. Died May 4, 188-. They had two daughters who died in infancy. Early in life he moved to Bangor, where he remained until 1837, when he settled in Ellsworth, Me., where until he retired from business he was the leading contractor in brick and stone work. The Post Office, Custom House and many of the buildings on State Street were built by him. He was also extensively interested in real estate. During the active years of his life he took a lively interest in all that meant the business and moral advancement of Ellsworth, and until his death his sympathies were always with every effort for advance. Like many of the Whit- mores while deeply interested in all the affairs of town, state and nation, he had no ambition for public office. A man much esteemed by his fellow citizens, it might truly have been said of him, he had no enemies. 298-453 Samuel 7 —Born at Bowdoinham, Me., October 5, 1812. Died at Bowdoinham June 14, 1893. As a young man he was earnest and industrious, overcoming many diflBculties to gratify the desire for learning so characteristic of the Whitmores. He fitted himself for teaching and in his early manhood followed that calling most success- fully. After his marriage he devoted the greater part of his time to the manage- ment of tJie old Homestead on Bowdoinham Eidge which his grandfather Stephen Whitmore had settled in 1793 (and which is still in the family). This, however, was not his only interest, but in whatever pursuit he was engaged he gave his best energies. Most of his leisure time was given to reading, while always in touch with all the affairs of his day, he loved best to turn to his old favorite authors and his wonderful memory allowed him to quote at will from them. This ability to keep with him always the thoughts that he loved was a source of great pleasure to him, and a great aid to many young students, to whom he was always helpful, and who so often availed themselves of his ability to give them the quotation or date they wished. An ardent abolitionist, he espoused the cause of the Republican Party from its birth, continuing his loyalty to its principle while he lived. Public office held no attraction for him, and though repeatedly urged to accept them, preferred to use his influence as a private citizen for the success of more ambitious friends, never, however, lending it unless convinced of their fitness. He had a deep and loving pride in all that the name Whitmore meant, it was this love of family taught by him which prompted in me the desire to continue the research in which he found so much pleasure. The Keystone of his character was Honesty, honest in thought, in spoken word, and deed. He was fond of repeating those lines from Pope, "An honest man is the noblest work of God." An upright citizen, a broad-minded Christian, ever ready to help those who tJusted him, believing that from him to whom much is given, much is expected. Until the close of his life his mind was very active and he never lost touch with the interest of the day. At the age of 80 he passed away at the old Homestead, firm in the belief he so often expressed that we should all meet as one glorious family on the other side. Space forbids more than this brief tribute to his life, the memory of which should be an inspiration to all his descendants aa it will always be to his granddaughter. (J. W. Married Mary Alice Holmes. 760 Frederick M. Born at St. Louis April 15, 1857. Unmarried. Died at Quincy, 111., December 29, 1881. Henry moved from Newton to Illinois in 1835 and settled at Barry, where he built the first frame house in that section of the state. Then he opened a general store, which he conducted until 1844. He then removed to St. Louis and engaged in the flour milling business, with which he was prominently identified, having built and operated the Nonantum and At- lantic Mills of St. Louis, and purchased and operated the Park of St. Louis and the Harrison Mills of Bellville, 111., until 1864, when, owing to im- paired health, he retired. At the time of his retirement he was the largest and most widely known miller in that section, and was a director in several of the St. Louis banking institutions. At the time of his death he was the only surviving original member of the St. Louis Merchants Exchange. In 1870 he moved to Quincy, 111., where he resided until 1896, when he went to Wellington, Kansas, to visit his daughter, Mrs. Holmes. Here he remained until his death in 1901. In character he was of the old New England school, ex- actly correct in all his dealings and conversation, and tried to do to others as he would be done by. (Extracts from Quincv, 111., Herald.) Henry Rogers Whitmore, his son, was educated at Washington Uni- versity, St. Louis, was a member of the first class of the university, but, having enlisted in the Union Army at the outbreak of the Civil War, did not graduate. In 1870 he removed to Quincy, and while there we find him holding an important share in the work of the city — President of Quincy Club, Vice President Humane Society, and first President of the Board of Trade. He returned to St. Louis;, in 1889, and while he soon re- tired from active business, continues to take an active part in all public 98 aflfairs of the city with which he has been so long identified. Ha has been a member of the Executive Committee of the Trans-Mississippi Commer- cial Congress for fifteen consecutive years ; Vice President of the National Irrigation Congress ; Vice President of National Good Roads Association ; Member of Executive Couamittee of the Illinois River Improvement Asso- ciation (the original promoter of the deep waterway which now seems so far advanced to a successful issue). Again we find the trait so common to the Whitmores, for, active and prominent as he was in public affairs and politics, he steadily refused public office, preferring to use his influence as a private citizen. Early in 1865, in command of a detatchment of the Fifteenth Mame Volunteers, he was stationed at Georgetown, North Carolina, to protect the planters and establish law and equity in that region. On account of ill health he was obliged to leave the service in the summer of 1865 after three and a half years of continuous service. The history of the Fifteenth Maineregimentexpresses better thananywordsofminehisservice. "While at Georgetown the Fifteenth was compelled to part company with one of its most popular officers of the old line, and more recently promoted to the field Major James H. Whitmore. By reason of impaired health incident to his long service in malarial sections, he was compelled to tender his re- signation and was discharged July, 1865. Major Whitmore had been with us as a commissioned officer from the earliest organization, servmg faith- fully and gallantly for three and a half years, in the various grades of Lieutenant, Captain and Major, and performing considerable staff duty, as acting Adjutant, Assisting Adjutant General, etc. ^ Little Whit' was a universal favorite and his old associates parted with him with very keen regret." , , After the war he spent the greater part of his life in Lynn, where as in- spector in charge of the inspection of the city and national government buildings he did much for the substantial advancement of his adopted city Always active in his interest in public matters, he was an independent voter and had wide influence as a fearless leader of public opinion. His happiness was in his home, and only those privileged to know him there could get the true measure of the man. Friendship was to him a holy name ; his doors were wide open and he himself always at the service of of his friends. 453-703 George E. 8 —Born at Bowdoinham May 27, 1848. He was educated in the Boston Public Schools, and on completion of his course entered the employ of his father in the commission business, and but for a short break was with him for 25 years. In 1861-62 he was in the island of Mauritius in the interest of the firm and in the same interest visited Madagascar. On his way home made a short stay in Calcutta, re- turning by way of England, largely for the purpose of visiting the village of Whitmore. After his return home was seldom out of Massachusetts. In 1870 he studied law, but before he was admitted to the bar aban- doned this study for that of painting, which he followed for some time as the friend and associate of the artist Virgil Williams. lu 1874 was elected to Boston Common Council as a Republican, but soon quarreled with his party managers and became a Democrat. In 1877 was defeated as Democratic Candidate for Common Council. In 1878 was elected to Common Council and was President of that body in 1879. Re-elected in 1879, 1880, 1881, 1882, 1885, 1886. Trustee of Boston Public Library 1882, 1883, 1885, 1888. 1875-1892 Record Commissioner for city of Boston. 1892 appointed City Registrar of Boston and held this office until his death. Business and public office were, however, mere episodes in his life, which was essentially that of a man of letters in various forms. An anti- quary devoted especially to the study of genealogy and heraldry, in both of which branches he was an entluisiastic student, and a careful, critical author. He was for years a constant contributor to Nation, both in its book column and signed communications. In 1854 he joined the New England Historical and Genealogical Society, and in 1857, 1861, 1863, 1872 was on Committee on Publication of the New England Historical and Genealogical Register and a frequent contributor to its columns. The Committee of Heraldry was established in 1864 and he was made its chairman, in which position he continued until 1873. In May, 1879, he sent out a circular which resulted in the formation of the Boston Antiquarian Club, which dissolved in December, 1881, and was succeeded by the Bostonian Society, whose purpose is the study of the his- tory of the city of Boston and preservation of its antiquities. As Record Commissioner he assisted in the publication of 28 volumes of Boston's Vital Statistics. 126 By special vote of city governmeut, he edited, in two volumes, 1887- 1889, the Colonial Laws of Massachusetts, of which the introduction or biographical sketch was issued separately in 1890, and is probably his most careful and elaborate piece of work. He was the author of 12 books and did much of the work on 47 books, principally family genealogies. He arranged a naethod of charting gene- alogies much used at the present time. In 1867 he received the degree of Master of Arts from Harvard University. (From a memoir by W. S. Appleton.) 501-785 Wiiliam R. 8- (Frederick H. 7, Isaiah 6, John 5, Francis 4, John 3, John 2, Francis 1) 785-980 John Thobeau -Born at Farmington, Ct., April 27, 1861. In 1647 "Job Laine. my kinsman." is appointed executor of the will of Thomas 141 Hewall of Marshfield. October 19, in declining the position, he speaks of himself as a carpenter of Dorchester. Job married about 1654 Sarah. She died May 19, 1659, and he married in Maiden July 2, 1660, Hannah Reyner or Rayner. He lived in Maiden, as the records show, in 1649. The first mention of slavery in Maiden is in an order of the court concerning Job Lane's negro servant, Chedmeleck, who ran away from his master. In 1667 he bought a negro boy called Mercury from John Leverett. He called himself Job Laine of Maiden in the deed. He seems to have retained his interest in Maiden even while he lived in Billerica. He was selectman 1683 and 1686. He removed to Billerica about 1667 or 1668. Had several grants of land, one as late as May 30, 1695. Was house Wright and carpenter, an able and honest artificer. He signed an agreement September 11, 1658, to build the first meeting house, and in 1662 built a drawbridge. He built the great bridge in 1667. The contract made January 11, 1667, is still preserved. It requires the completion of the bridge by September 29th following. Form of structure and size of material are minutely specified ; arches to be 16 feet wide and flooring to be of oak plank 4 inches thick. Payment to be 7 score and 5 pounds sterling ; ten in cash, ten in wheat, the remainder in corn and cattle, not exceeding one half in cattle, which must be under seven years old, etc. His house in Billerica was built on the Winthrop farm, which he bought in 1664, being put in possession August 8, 1664. July 4, 1665, John Winthrop receipts for farm. He paid for the land by building a dwelling house and barns for Fitz John Winthrop in New London, Conn. He is said to have built his house soon after acquir- ing the land. The house is on the North Road, Bedford (Bedford having been separated ' from Billerica in 1729). It is still in fair condition and shows evidence of having been strongly built. It has a large fireplace, heavy beams, high wainscoting, a dungeon, chim- ney, cupboards and the usual good workmanship of the colonial period. The price paid was 230 pounds sterling. On the marriage of his son, 1680, he returned to Maiden and the house descended through John, remaining in the same family until about 1860. There is an interest about the Winthrop farm, which remained intact from 1630 until bought by Job Laine, 1664, and portions of which still remain in possession of Lane descendants. Job died in Maiden August 23, 1697, and left an estate inventoried — Billerica £800, Maiden £1138, personal £188 lis. 6d., total £2126 lis. 6d. (An- tiquarian Register, Lane Papers, Vital Statistics of Maiden.) 142 Col. John Lane, born October, 1661; died January, 1714-15. Married March 20, 1680, Susannah Whipple. He was the leading military man of Billerica, appearing in rapid succession as Lieuten- ant, Captain and Colonel. He was in command of a troop in 1693, and in 1696 or 1697, February 12, received orders from Major Jona- than Tyng of Dunstable: "Having advice from the Governor that at the spring now advancing it may be expected that the enemy will make fresh attack by land and sea, I do therefore order that you make inquiry into the state of the troops under your command, and see that every one of them be mounted on a good, serviceable horse for war, and furnished with a good, well-fitted carbine, besides pistolls, and to see that the whole troop be in readiness to pass upon duty in case of alarm upon discovering the approach of enemy by sea. You are hereby ordered with the several troops under your command forthwith to repair to the post or place within your county where alarum is first given, there to receive and attend to further orders." (Hazen's History of Billerica, p. 135.) He received land for Deputy service in 1707. Was Selectman 1693, 1696-1704, 1709. Mary seems to have inherited the warlike spirit of her father, for the following tradition is given authority by Hazen, he having it from a grandson of Mary Lane, Mr. Leander Homer: " During a period of alarum the family was left with only a man on guard. A certain stump excited the suspicion of Mary as she looked out of the windows, and she called upon the man to shoot it. He refused and laughed at her apprehension. At last she told him if he would not shoot she would take the gun and do it herself. This she did and the stump rolled over a dead man." In England we find a Laine on the roll of Battell Abbeys Barons. William the Conqueror founded this Benedictine Abbey in 1067, in honor of the battle of Hastings, October 14, 1066. Battle or Battell is six miles N. E. of Hastings. It is said Laine means wool, and shows French origin for the family. A Lane house was in Rickman- worth, Hertfordshire, a village twenty miles N. W. of London, 1542- 1758. It was at Sheppard's Mill End, and is said to have remained in the family until 1820, when it passed into other hands owing to failure of direct male heirs. There is a picture of it in volume 3, Lane Genealogies. Robert Lane or Laine of Rickman worth is in subsidy roll of 1524. The will of his son Thomas is proved June 14, 1587. The will of George, son of Thomas, is proved September 27, 1628. 143 James, son of George, married Katherine Russell. He inherited a house and two acres from his grandfather, Thomas, at Croxeby Green. Job Laine (1624) was son of James, and mention is made in his will of an interest in an estate in England. RE YNER 1. John Reyner of Gildersomme, Yorkshire, England. 2. Rev. John Reyner and Sarah Boyes. 3. Hannah Reyner, born 1632 ; died April 30, 1704. Married July 10, 1660, Job Lane. Rev. John was a graduate of Magdalen, Oxford, and in 1631 married Sarah Boyes. He came to this country on the ship James from Bristol to Boston in 1635. In 1636 he went to Plymouth as pas- tor of First Church and remained there until 1654, when he went to Dover, N. H., and remained there in charge of the church until his death in 1669. His will, made April, 1669, proved June of that year. August 7, 1660, a deed states John Reyner grants his son Jachim of Rowley, N. E., heir and co-partner, in the rights of his mother, de- ceased, to land in Edgton and Welburn, Yorkshire, John Reyner be- ing tenant for life. November, 1660, another deed reads, John Reyner of Dover, N. E., having a right to % part of land in Yorkshire, Eng., and hav- ing granted to his son Jachim % during life and the whole }i part at his death, Jachim on payment of £155 by Job Laine deeds to him said %■ part now in occupation of Thomas Boyes. August 5, 1662, John Reyner grants Job Laine yi of the rents of Edgton and Welburn. This estate came from Sarah Boyes' brother, who was killed 1643, in the war of the revolution, he being of the Parliamentary party under Lord Fairfax. WHIPPLE 1. Matthew of Bocking, England. 2. John, born in England 1605, and Sarah . 3. John, born in England 1628, and Martha Reyner. 4. Susannah, born 1660 or 1662. Married March 20, 1680, John Lane. Two sons of Matthew of Bocking, Matthew and John, came here with their families some time during the 1630's and settled in Ips- wich. John, born 1605, had a large grant of land in 1639. Freeman 144 in 1640. Held various offices in the town; was Feoffee of theGram- mer School; Deputy to General Court in 1640-1-2-6, 1650-1-2-3; Deacon and Ruling Elder of First Church. His wife, Sarah, died June 14, 1658. He married, second, Jennett, widow of Thomas Dick- inson, who survived him at his death June 30, 1669. Captain John Whipple, born 1628. Married, first, Martha, daughter of Humphrey and Mary Reyner (Humphrey was brother of Rev. John Reyner). She died February 24, 1679. He married, sec- ond, Elizabeth Cogswell Paine, June 28, 1680, and was survived by her at his death August 10, 1683. Captain John was Feoffee of Grammar School, Deputy to General Court in 1674, 1679, 1682, 1683; appointed by the Legislature February 21, 1676, as Captain of a troop to march to Marlborough against the enemy. He was with his troop in the fight against the Indians at Salisbury. Was County Treasurer in 1683. The family pride in the name John and Matthew has made the study of the Whipples confusing as well as interesting. We find the Johns in both families (Matthews and Johns) following each other in such rapid succession that they were forced to titles to distinguish them. Hence John of England, 1605, is Elder John; John, 1628, Captain John; his son John, Major John. In later generations we find Singer John, Signer John's John, Lieutenant John, Cornet John, etc. Some time prior to 1642 Elder John bought of John Jolly, Sam- uel Appleton, John Cogswell, Robert Muzzey and Humphry Broad- street, a lot of 2J acres, and there established his home. In 1650 we find a quit claim to the property signed by John Fownes, the original owner, and as Fownes' occupancy of the land ceased in 1638, it is probable that it was occupied by John Whipple at that time. The house built by him, and added to by his son, Captain John, has been restored to its original condition and is now the home of the Ipswich Historical Society. It is considered the best surviving example in New England of the earliest seventeenth century colonial architec- ture. Space will not admit a full description of the house and inter- esting documents of the Whipple family, which is given in delightful form in the tenth publication of the Ipswich Historical Society (which I would recommend to all the descendants) . I can not, how- ever, forbear an extract from "An Old Ipswich House" by Mr. W. H. Downes (p. 13-14) : "Now, here are the more interesting dimensions of the building, as it stands. Length, on the ground, fifty feet; width, thirty-six X45 feet. Great east room, ground floor, twenty-four by seventeen and one-half feet; height seven feet. Fireplace in this room, seven feet and three inches wide; two feet, nine inches deep. Dimensions of oak girders, fourteen by fourteen inches. Windows, diamond panes, and hung on hinges, five feet, three inches wide, and two feet six incheshigh ; three sashes each ; should be leaded glass. East chamber, same measurements as east room below. Fireplace in this room, six feet two inches wide, and two feet two inches deep. These figures may mean but little to the layman, but they are full of significance to the architect, the builder, and the antiquarian. The exterior of the Whipple house has nothing in its aspect that would serve to draw especial attention to it; but the interior possesses these two distinct points of architectural merit, remarkable massiveness of construction, and fine, dignified proportions. The two main rooms on the ground floor are in fact superb for their simplicity, size and solidity. The beautiful rich brown tone of the old oak posts, girders and joists gives the key of color. There is a white plastered ceiling between the joists, the plaster being put directly on the floor-boards of the second story. ... "One thing is evident, to any visitor who stands in the great east room, and contemplates the stately proportions of the interior; that is, that the Whipples must have been great swells in their day, to possess such a mansion. Indeed, no further proof of their status, so far as means are concerned, is needed than is furnished by the enter- taining inventory of Captain John Whipple's estate in 1683, with its painful particularity, itemizing each separate article of household use, apparel, tools, edibles, beverages, and even "Lawrence ye Indian," who was valued at four pounds, a sum which seems inexpensive, even where the supply of Indians exceeded the demand. It is enough to make collectors' mouths water to run over this list of old furniture, silverware, pewter, china, arms, andirons, brasses, coppers, gallipots, buckles and buttons, "kittles," warming-pans, trenchers, candlesticks, "tin lanthorns," beakers, flagons, "basons," piggins, "sully bub" pots, spinning wheels, and a score of other things, more or less phonetically spelled, after the excellent fashion of the epoch, when, as George Eliot remarks, spelling was mostly a matter of taste." HALL 1. Widow Mary of Cambridge. 2. John and Elizabeth Green Hall. Elizabeth was daughter of Percival and Ellen Green. 146 3. Lieut. Stephen, born September 28, 1680, and Elizabeth Fowle. 4. Mary Hall, born April 17, 1719. Married Francis Whitmore 22-84. (P. 35.) FOWLE 1. George and Mary Fowle of Concord. 2. James and Abigal Carter Fowle. Abigal was daughter of John and Elizabeth, granddaughter of Thomas and Mary Carter. 3. Elizabeth Fowle. WHITTEMORE 1. Thomas and Hannah . 2. Samuel, born in England 1647, and Hannah . 3. Samuel, born at Dover, N. H., July 27, 1696, and Elizabeth Spring. 4. Mary, born May 6, 1741. Married Stephen Whitmore 88- 198. (P. 46.) Thomas came to this country with his wife, Hannah, and several children about 1650, leaving in England his oldest son, Thomas. A son born to him after his arrival in America he also called Thomas, leaving two sons of that name at his death. In his will he states that his oldest son Thomas, living in England, having had his portion, he devises his estate to his widow, Hannah, (who afterward married Benjamin Butterfield), and his other children. He settled on a farm on the Maiden side of Charlestown, where he died May 25, 1661. Samuel, born in England 1647, married Hannah , and for a short time lived at Dover, N. H., where his older children were born, but soon settled on a farm in the southwesterly part of Charles- town, now Somerville, on the road from Winter Hill to Arlington. Samuel, born at Dover, N. H., July 27, 1696, died February 3, 1793. His wife, Elizabeth Spring, died in June, 1764, and he mar- ried Esther, widow of Thomas Prentice. His children were all by his wife Elizabeth. He inherited the homestead, but exchanged it about 1730 with Joseph Russell for an estate in Menetomie, on Main street, adjoining Alewife or Menetomie River. Both in body and mind he was a sturdy, energetic man. Selectman of Cambridge 16 years, between 1743 and 1762. He served on various important com- mittees, especially during the Revolutionary War. In his earlier days he was Captain of Dragoons in the King's army. Always outspoken, his talk at one time threatened serious results, for remarking publicly of a certain man, "Yes, he is elected (select- 147 man), but is no more capable of filling the office than my old horse." The newly-elected selectman had him arrested for slander, and also sued for £1000 damages. The courts released Samuel and dismissed the suit, whereupon he sued the selectman for false arrest and is awarded £200 damages ; so he freed his mind of his opinion and his opponent's purse of his surplus. In 1768, when the Government had refused to repeal the new tax list, which was so objectionable, and had ordered three regiments of troops to be quartered in Boston to enforce submission to the tax, the Boston patriots called a convention of the surrounding settle- ments to join in protest, and he was one of the two delegates from Cambridge. Again, in 1772, when it was decided, on the advice of Sam Adams, to embody the resolutions of that year in pamphlet form and have them read to all the colonists, he was one of the committee ap- pointed by the convention to see that the plan was carried out. With such a record of activity it was not strange, that, though nearly 80 years of age, the King's soldiers should have found him in his place at Lexington on that memorable April day, or that his place was such as to result in his being one of the wounded in the battle. Lossing's Field Book of the Revolution, in the list of martyrs and wounded, mentions him among the wounded. Some accounts place his birth as 1694 and age at time of the battle as 81, but this was in error, as the records place his birth in 1696. In spite of several severe bayonet wounds (the accounts say seven) he recovered and enjoyed many years of activity. The Columbian Centennial of February, 1793, says: "Died at Menetomie February 3, Samuel Whittemore. He left 185 descendants, some of the 5th generation." Thus, after nearly 97 years of life, he passed away, truly both Patriot and Patriarch. POTTER 1. William and Katharine Mustard Potter. 2. Elder James and Molly Spears. 3. Mary Potter, born October 12, 1776; married Samuel Whit- more 18-298. (P. 62.) Elder James Potter was so called because he was one of the early preachers of the Baptist Church in Maine. He was also called the miller from his connection with the mills at the falls. He resided at Topshan, Me. During the Revolutionary War he was in the Bagaduce expedi- tion acting as lieutenant in Captain Hinckley's Company. Hinckley being killed during the engagement, the command of the company devolved on Lieut. Potter. 148 ADDENDUM. PAGE 72-561 .
