°4 °- ■-. -** TO WALK WITH GOD TO WALK WITH GOD AN EXPERIENCE IN AUTOMATIC WRITING BY ANNE W. LANE AND HARRIET BLAINE BEALE NEW YORK DODD, MEAD AND COMPANY 1920 i? Copyright, 1920, By DODD, MEAD AND COMPANY, Inc. VAIL-BALLOU COMPANY BINQHAMTON AND NEW YORK APR 13 1920 ©CU565538 "The world was more believing a little while ago, and when it gets these truths and understands them, it will be filled with belief again, and men will be better and happier. " The new truth is the same, only the un- derstanding is all different. The light is always the same but the clouds are not be- tween us and the sun. "Love we give you always and we ask only faith in return. " We will now begin." INTRODUCTION We have been asked to give a few words of explanation as to the origin of the follow- ing " Lessons." In the winter of 1917-18 a book called " The Seven Purposes " was published, giv- ing an account of certain messages of a per- sonal nature received in automatic writing, and also of a series of what purported to be spiritual revelations. Several of Margaret Cameron's friends in Washington were very deeply interested in the book, and they resolved to try such writ- ing for themselves. On the first day they met, they received only one or two disjointed phrases : " You will get light," the name " MeRae," and " ask H," and, that last be- iii INTRODUCTION ing the nickname of a friend, she was asked to join in their experiment. Then came the difficulty of fixing an hour that would suit every one, and two of the group, who were working at the same hos- pital, suggested that they should meet every day for two weeks, at a given time, and that the others should come when they could. 1 It was in this way that the undersigned be- gan to write together, and, through the writ- ing, received these teachings. 1 We used a planchette (a small, heart- shaped article made of wood, with two legs on wheels at the back and a pencil making the third leg at the front) because it seemed less liable to unconscious muscular action than a pencil held in the hand, and at first iWe should perhaps add, for its bearing on the sub- ject, that while one of us had no insistent personal claim in the life beyond our own, the other had lost an only son, killed in the St. Mihiel drive in September, 1918. Neither of us had ever written automatically be- fore nor have we ever been able to write alone. iv INTRODUCTION we obtained only circles, words and frag- ments of sentences, with irrelevant names and messages cutting into what we hoped vainly would become a connected phrase. We were extremely interested but bewil- dered and baffled at every turn. It was more like opening a window to a crowded street and listening to the chance words one could catch, than like anything else in the world. On the eleventh day came a decided change. From the moment we began, the writing was firmer and more impelling, and we were told at once that whoever was using our hands had come with definite intention, and meant to stay with us. We had, in technical phraseology, " found our control," though we were both too inexperienced to recognize it. From that date we have been in contact with what seems to us a clear mind or minds. v INTRODUCTION We were told that as soon as we could write well enough, we were to be used for a series of lessons that "they" wished to give us, and that we were to meet every day and were at liberty to ask questions which would be answered as far as our understanding would permit. We have sometimes been told to wait for an answer until we knew more, but we have never had a foolish or ir- relevant or unkind response. After perhaps six weeks, working at least two hours every day, the lessons began. As they were originally received, in place of the words " spiritual forces " or " messen- gers " or " voice of the spirit " or any term denoting spiritual activity, a symbol was used, six interlacing circles enclosed by a seventh, and when we asked for an explana- tion, we were told that a symbol was un- limited in meaning and that, therefore, they preferred to use it, and that we must try to vi INTRODUCTION apprehend the sense. And when, under their direct instructions to us to publish, we began to correct and revise, the equiva- lent words for each symbol were written with a speed and certainty that left us amazed. It was only when we went over the manuscripts of our notes that we found how perfectly each synonym fitted into its place. 1 We give the lessons exactly as we received them, but we have no idea whether they will have for others the spiritual significance they have for us, since we cannot give to others our own sense of being in close touch with a wise and tender personality. We realize that it will be said that there is noth- ing new in the teaching, and we admit that there is repetition to what seems an unnec- essary degree, but we pledge our word that i The explicit title was also given us, and we were told that we would find it in the eleventh lesson. vii INTRODUCTION we have put nothing of our own into the text. We have considered it an imperative duty to add this small link to the chain of testimony which is binding our world each day more closely to the next. Anne W. Lane. Harriet Blaine Beale. Washington, November 1st, 1919. Yin TO WALK WITH GOD FIRST LESSON THE greatest power in the world is love. The love of God surpasses belief and He is able to understand and forgive all. Men cannot always be sure of each other but they can be sure of God's love and forgiveness. The best way to learn is to love. The only way to learn is to love. Every day of one's life there is opportunity to do God's work for man. Men will not be unkind to one another when they understand this truth in the spirit (force 1 ), and all must i In revising, we objected to the term "spirit (force)" as not being clear. We were told to leave it, that it was as near as they could come in our language to expressing their idea. 1 TO WALK WITH GOD learn there or here. We are all in the love of God. His love is around all and through all and in all. We cannot lose Him if we would, and spiritual forces are His mes- sengers. When a man turns away from God and does not believe, God waits until his heart is ready to open to Him, and He is never angry. He is a refuge to all who live in sorrow and who are weary and in trouble. He is never too busy to listen to those who need Him and He is a never-failing source of strength to those who pray to Him. The only way to love is to love your brother. Christ said if you do not love your brother, you cannot love God. We little realize how true this is, for we must learn the good that is in every human soul. We are all better able to benefit the world when we look with kindly eyes on our fellowman. We must be able to help others if born of 2 FIRST LESSON the spirit. The spiritual forces are God's messengers to man and are sent to show the way to God. Man is not a spirit but he can become one. The lesson of earth is love. All must learn it in the universe. God is love and His children must be love too. We are not able to follow Him if we do not follow the teaching of Christ, and Christ said "love your brother as your- self." This is the first lesson. SECOND LESSON WE will not do the world any good if we do not help each other, for the world is the place where the spirit will become manifest if we cultivate it, and we can only do so by fol- lowing the teaching of Christ. We are little children who are easily confused by the million things of the ma- terial life, and God is waiting for us to believe the messengers that He has sent to us from time to time. We are not told better in this world because each one must be let go his own way until he turns like a tired child to his spiritual guides. We are only able to love really when we forget ourselves and work only for others, and are kind to all, no matter what they do or are. It is actually a part of each man's de- 4 SECOND LESSON velopment to be told this truth whether he accepts it or not. Each man is free to do what he will as he chooses. All will, how- ever, learn the lesson some time and those who do not learn it there are delayed here. This is the second lesson. 5 THIRD LESSON THE only work that is worth while is work for others. We are in a world of material things and the lesson of life really is belief in spiritual things. The work of the world is only to learn how to believe in spiritual things which cannot be proved by the senses. We are not able to learn by ourselves. We must pray for the spirit of humility. The spiritual guides are those who help mankind on the way to God, and each man who seeks can find the truth. All men must learn to pray. Peace will God give to him who seeks the eternal life. We will be able to work again here after life there is ended, and the earlier we be- gin the work, the better life we will have. Spiritual guides are calling to men to 6 THIRD LESSON love their fellowmen, and men are deaf and will not listen. When men do listen the world will be changed, and spiritual forces will always be guides to men if they listen to the voice of the spirit, and they will teach men the way to peace and truth and eternal life. We are here to learn love and faith — love of God through love of man, faith through the witness of the spirit to men who listen and hear the still small voice within them. The world will be better able to under- stand when it is willing to listen, and it will listen now because it is so full of sor- row. The life of the spirit is the only way to eternal life and the way to Christ. Christ is the way to God and all men must come to Him sooner or later. The way is open to all who seek, and all who ask must be answered. This is the way to eternal truth. 7 TO WALK WITH GOD Men are like stupid children who do not know what they want, and they are wait- ing until a miracle comes. We never can work miracles because all is done by law. This is the third lesson. 8 FOURTH LESSON WE are all materially of the same elements that we were on earth, only less cumbrous than when there, and being elementally the same, we have the same emotions and life. We love as we did there and all spiritual forces are busy with the various works which occupied them while they were on earth. We will tell you what we do here, and how we work, ever becoming better able to help those who are ready to listen to these guides. There are many kinds of guides and each has its own particular work. There are many kinds of spiritual forces and each force is able to write to those of its own force. We are not all willing to work unselfishly, intelligently for others, and until we are, 9 TO WALK WITH GOD the spiritual guides will wait. The end these spiritual guides are waiting for is the unfolding of man's heart to God. When men become as little children the world will be another place, and love will be without envy or malice. When we actually are very loving we will never be impatient, and the best way to be- come loving is to become patient. Those who do their duty, do well, but they must love too. All must learn to love. Those who would learn to love must love those whom they live with, and when they learn to love these, they will love all. Christ be- lieved in love and worked through love. The power of love is unlimited and can do all things. Those who are guided by spiritual guides will be mare and accomplish more for others if they learn to love fully. The reason the world is so bad is lack of love, and when we 10 FOURTH LESSON love the work of God, we will do all in our power to help the world become a better place. We must not be discouraged because there is so much to be done. Life goes on through all eternity and love must be learned there or here. Christ was the way and the truth and the life ; those who drink of this stream will never thirst or be blind to occasions to help those whom they are near. And all of life is service. We are all of us bound together. We are all children of spiritual forces and affection is needed in order to do our best there. We are all in the love of Christ and men must become children of God to love with their best effort, and when they do His will, they will be afterwards children of life. There are many kinds of spiritual forces. Some are forces of both love and force, while some are only of love. 11 TO WALK WITH GOD There are many forces and each calls to its own kind. We of the forces of love are the writing power to those of love, while to the forces of force, only force calls. There are all kinds of powers in the uni- verse and each has its own part to play. There are all kinds of people in the world and they are all in the spirit. We who are in the spirit of love are better able to teach love to those around us. All must learn and the sooner, the better. The world needs love more than ever. Men are material and absorbed in the things of the world which are of no value, and they must put away the things of earth and learn the things of the spirit. There are these spiritual forces and they are willing to teach men all they would know of the future life, but they can only do this to those of their own kind. When men turn to God, they are seem- 12 FOURTH LESSON ingly like little children, willing to follow; His will, and Christ is the only way to learn to love and be unselfish. We are after all the children of God, and our spiritual guides are guides to Him. Love and service are the only things worth while in this life, and whoever will actually give himself is doing His Father's work and is a worthy child of God. There are many to work but few who know how. All spiritual guides are the teachers to those of their spirit in the world, and spiritual guides lead to God. The greatest of all forces is love. Love is the fulfilling of the law. Love is kind to all no matter how lowly, and the only guide to spiritual forces. Love will be the force to teach the world there and here, and only when men love, will they become believers in the life of the spirit, and to become the children of God, men must listen to what 13 TO WALK WITH GOD their guides tell them. These spiritual forces are the only way to get in touch with those who have gone before, without danger to yourselves from the evil forces who are ever seeking to break in on all work of this kind of teaching, because they are deterrent to spiritual forces. There are many kinds of deterrent forces in the universe that wish to hinder all progress, and these forces will do all they can to deter man from becom- ing that which he must become on earth, if possible, for if not there, he will be delayed here. Man is willing to be led to God if his mind can conceive the great senselessness of earthly things, but he is bewildered by the senses and is blind to his own future. When he realizes what he has lost, he will be only so willing to work that it will be hard to keep him from over-working, and that he must not do either. There is reason 14 FOURTH LESSON in all things, and to overwork is also break- ing the law. " God made heaven and earth in six days and rested the seventh," man must have his periods of rest on earth and here. We all rest when we are tired, and there is a wonderful rest here which is not like your sleep but which refreshes us even more. We rest in a beautiful tableland sur- rounded by hills with little streams of water flowing on all sides. There we rest until we are ready to work again. Flowers of all sorts and of a beauty unknown to earth are all about us, and the welcoming guard- ian of the place serves both our bodies and our souls. There is no truth in this — that we are without affection and not interested in the world. We love as you do. We are more interested than ever in those we loved on earth, and our one desire is to help them and have them with us in this beautiful 15 TO WALK WITH GOD place. Christ has given us the key and we must open the door. We will all come here in time, only why delay coming when the way is clearly shown to all who will open their minds? It is very beautiful here and all who wish listen to beautiful music. When we work we are filled with joy and we are full of love for all. There are all kinds of things here which we have never known on earth — all kinds of flowers and trees and birds and animals. We are never better able to work than here. We are after all working here in our full capacity as spirits. We are all working for the world. When we work here we work with all our strength and until we are tired. Then we rest in one of these beautiful resting-places of this land. There are many of these beau- tiful places and each is different and each equally beautiful. All who are weary come 16 [ FOUKTH LESSON here and all are refreshed. Teachers from other planes come to us here and teach us higher spiritual lessons, and as the will of God is unfolded to us, we of the Circles of God are filled with joy that we have a place in this wonderful work. When the will of God is done on earth, it leads each person to these spiritual guides, telling them how to work in the world for God, and each one encounters the elements with which he is best fitted to work. When man will work with the guides, he will come into his foretold in- heritance and he will be better able to de- velop there on earth, and he will have his eyes really opened to the spiritual forces. These forces are only actually waiting for man to awaken and they do all in their power to arouse him. When once he is awake he must awaken others, and this is the work to which you are called by the 17 TO WALK WITH GOD spirit. When once one is alive to these spiritual powers, one has endless possibili- ties. Life will never again be the same and the material things will no longer have any weight and will be of no value. > This is the end of the fourth lesson. 18 FIFTH LESSON WHEN we are living the life of the spirit on earth, we will never be unkind to any living thing. Each thing created by God is within the infinite love, and each has its spiritual force within which it functions while on earth. Even the lowliest has its own spirit- ual force. There is a force for each thing in creation and all are under the law of spiritual guides. When all are conscious of these guides, we will be able to live under the law without any friction. We all are able to work better when we work in har- mony with the law, and the law is very clear to those who are willing to be guided by the spirit, and the most of people are on the way to truth. When you are in these forces, you are guided to God by spirits 19 TO WALK WITH GOD whose one wish is to do His will. Those who are willing to do whatever they can must live the life of the spirit, and be as full of love as they should be. When man turns to God, spiritual guides will be around him and will help him on the way to God and to eternal life, and all men must come in time, only they may choose their time of coming and they may delay as long as they are not willing to be led. When men are on earth, they are not willing to be led by anything except their own desires. Spiritual guides will teach them how to control their desires, and these guides are here to tell them how to reach to God's spirit and to inspire all others. When men are willing to do God's will, even if they fail often, they will go on to the end, and spiritual guides will help them to teach other men to do His will, and to be on earth an inspiration to all who are not awake. 20 FIFTH LESSON And so will gradually come the day all spiritual forces are working for. And when the day comes that all men are filled with desire for spiritual life, the thou- sand years spoken of by the Scriptures will begin and the sorrows of earth will be largely gone. Until men are better, the years will be sad for those on earth, but when men follow their spiritual guides, life will be a joy and all will be happy on earth. And the earth-life could be very beautiful if only men were not blind to their own ad- vantage. Men only see the little things about them and deliberately shut out the great things. When men listen to the inspiration of the spirit, they will learn how to help them- selves and will try to follow in the path of Christ to God, and though this may seem difficult, it is really the easy way when once you enter at the door. 21 TO WALK WITH GOD The only way is to begin, and when you do not do right, begin again; and each day it grows easier to live the life of the spirit. And each failure is a stepping-stone to suc- cess, and each one must try and try again until he does succeed on earth as in this world. Each man is the only helper for himself, and he must do his best work on earth, be- cause if he does, he will be of great force when he comes here and will not be a deter- rent spirit. All deterrent spirits are of darkness. They must come to the light in time but they waste many happy aeons. All who work will help the great end to come more quickly, and the end is more beautiful than any dream in their wildest flight of imagination, and all who' speed that day will be of great power in the king- dom of God. This is the end of the fifth lesson. 22 SIXTH LESSON THE sooner men turn to God there on earth, the sooner they will be believers in the spiritual guides. And when the earthly tie is broken, they are met on this side by welcoming spirits. These spirits take them to a place where they are able to rest if they need rest, as many do, and while they rest, they are instructed in the work to be done here, and all are eager to begin the new and glorious work which is done for the glory of God. And all that work will be happy in the knowledge of the greatness of His will, and all can really do their part to further this on earth, for it is on earth that all must begin if they are born on earth ; and if they are born on other planets, they must begin there. Where a man is born, there he must 23 TO WALK WITH GOD do his work, unless he is to be a deterrent in spiritual matters, and all who are deterrent are of darkness. All must come to the light but if they lose this opportunity, they are delayed. Only God can know what their loss must be and He is very merciful and will forgive. When aeons have passed they will be at the seat of Mercy too, but, like all who have broken the law, they must pay the penalty. When men are able to judge, they will know how great is the mercy of God, and love will be over all the universe and open all the doors to God. And those who did not do their part will bitterly regret when that day comes — not because of the punish- ment but because they lost their opportunity to help in the great work. And life gives each man his opportunity, and if he refuses, his guides must wait. When man is once alive to the truth, he 24 SIXTH LESSON will begin to work as never before, and all things that worried him will leave him un- touched, and the life of the spirit will fill him instead of the life of material things. All that he can do to help others will be done, and all that will matter to him will be the will of God, and life will be a beau- tiful thing instead of a series of troubles, and each day will be a day of service to his fellow-men, and each service an exquisite joy. And each one who devotes himself to this work is a true child of God, and eventually he will be of spiritual forces, and, when he comes here, he will be of greatest help to these forces. For power grows with exer- cise and we must learn how to use this power, for it is a free gift of God. This is the power of the Holy Spirit to which Christ referred when He sent the apostles to men to teach the word of God. 25 TO WALK WITH GOD For the power is in the world today even more powerful than ever, and spirits of God are the witness thereof, and these are the spiritual Comforter promised by Christ to men on the earth. And Christ is in these spiritual forces. This is the sixth lesson. 26 SEVENTH LESSON WHEN once the spiritual nature is understood, there will be no limit to man's power. All na- ture will yield her secrets to him and he can command where now he is powerless. Man is a sower of God's seed and he will reap a great harvest if he works according to the law, and this law is clear to those who search. There is no truth but this truth and all will learn. Man is only foiled in his search when God's spirits are not his guides, and those spirits are waiting for him to open his heart and mind. All the beauties of nature and all the many wonders of the unknown worlds are for his pleasure when he is ready to learn of them, and man today is not able to even dream of what his eventual life may 27 TO WALK WITH GOD be. All that his farthest flights of fancy can imagine are far short of the glorious reality. Many are his falls but glorious his real worth in God's scheme of creation for the man He has made, and of his ultimate end even we have no knowledge, nor can we even dream of anything so far beyond our power of comprehension. We of the guides are not able to teach beyond our knowledge and we too have our guides, and so it is on each plane. There are seven planes and teachers from the higher are always helping those below. And all there do not work in harmony but all will in time, and here all is love with- out end and all are blessed in their work. We work always with our full strength and when tired we rest. When rested, we work again, and each period is full of joy and the weariness of earth is unknown to 28 SEVENTH LESSON us. Every one is better for work if he works in the right way, and rest is equally right for all. When man once learns the power that is his, he will wonder how he could have been so blind. All the wonders of the earth will be at his feet, and he will be able to control all elemental forces and all nature will be open to him. The miracles done by Christ were all done according to the law, and when man knows how to work in the law, he can do all kinds of things that he could not do without knowledge of these laws. When man is once master of this law he will be only the better able to do God's will on earth, and he will be in close touch with his spiritual guides, and then he will be a great power on the earth, and earth will be his footstool, as the prophets foretold, and all that he dreams of doing today will be as nothing to what he will do. 29 TO WALK WITH GOD And when man is as a little child he will be in touch with spirit, and when he works with the law, he will be as simple as a little child, and he will love all about him and be helpful to all, and we spirits are help- ing to hasten that day. Man is very wilful and he desires to go his own way, and until he chooses to turn of his own accord, we spirits must wait, and so precious hours are lost to him and to all, for he delays not only himself but all who wait for the end of creation. And, though those who turn to God wait in happi- ness and can use their best efforts for others always, yet they all wait, and while in days to come, those who have delayed others will be able to enjoy the great end, they will only be spectators, not participators, in deed and in fact. When men are intentionally bad they are punished, but when they are just blind and stupid they are not punished, 30 SEVENTH LESSON they are only called evaders. And those who evade their duty will not be treated as wicked but as worthless, and all these will be able in time to come under the law, and whoever is under the law will in time be a child of God. But whoever blasphemes will be out of the spiritual forces, and whoever is out of the spiritual forces is not of God and will not ever be of Him. Out of the spirit means that aeons must pass before that man can be redeemed. And all must come to God in the end but there is a difference between a beloved child and a disobedient servant, and in the last day he who has thrown away his many chances will be bitterly sorry, for, when he sees what he has lost, he will know how foolish he has been, and he would give all things to undo what he did. Strength and courage will help but not undo mistakes, and so he will pay out of his 31 TO WALK WITH GOD future for the time wasted. All men are willed by God for a great future, but those who do not take what is given them must go on until they are ready to obey, and they lose much happiness. All men do their best when they think it to their advantage, but God asks their faith and trust, and when they give it unques- tioningly, great is their reward. This is the seventh lesson. 32 EIGHTH LESSON THOSE who learn their earth lesson will stop a very short time on the astral plane and are soon able to continue their work here, and life here is very beautiful. Eventually we who are here go on to higher planes of spiritual life and opportunities. Even we do not know what is ahead of us. We only know that it will be more wonderful, and as each day passes we praise God that we are permitted to do His will. And all will be in a little while in a new place where they will know better and understand more, and all will rejoice that they are in so wonderful a world. Are men intent on worldly things when they must die and leave them? All spirit- ual things they take with them. And all 33 TO WALK WITH GOD eventually die on earth, while whoever lives the life of the spirit has his treasure in heaven, and where his treasure is, there his heart is also. No one can do two things at once and do them well, and you have your choice. Think well of this ! All who live on earth can choose, and they choose for all time. We can never make up for lost time, and though God is very merciful, all must pay the penalty of the time they lost. It is so easy if you will only open your heart and mind to the forces around you, and will let the love of God purify your hearts and minds, and will do your part to live according to God's law. Each one can do much to influence those about him. Wherever you may be placed in the world you can there do your part, and each one is responsible for his place in the eternal scheme, wherever he may be, and he is not alone to himself but is there 34 EIGHTH LESSON for others, and others depend on him for their help in all things. All who are ready to learn must be helped to find the way to God. All who are able to teach must always do so. To deny a fellow-man is to deny God. To fail to help is to fail God. All must do their part and each one must do all he dares to awaken others. When man is able to work under the law, he will of necessity be welcome to his spiritual guides, because they are forces of God and God is love, and when he is with his spiritual guides, he is shut out from hurtful influences, and all good spirits guard him so that even on earth, no evil can befall him. And all good forces live ever with him, and all nature smiles on him, and all that he does is welcomed by love, and love is the greatest force of God. And love is without any thought for it- self, and love endures. Filled with love, 35 TO WALK WITH GOD man can endure anything, bear any burden, and all is part of the day's work, and the only thing that matters is the happiness of that which he loves. And all are filled with desire to do the will of God, and His will is very easy to do. All must only love their brother, and, when man loves his brother, he loves God, and each man, no matter how bad, has something beautiful in him. Each man responds to some appeal, and those who work with the spiritual forces must find what that is, and must find their way to each man's heart and turn him to God. And to fail to help is to fail God. And when God will ask each one what he has done, the better way will be to point to one's fellow-man. Many turn both to God and to those around them, but those who work best are devoted to their fellow-men. 36 EIGHTH LESSON And all must try and try again, for when we get the best results, it is through re- peated failures, and all Who try are on the way to ultimate success. No matter how humble he is, no one can fail if he tries, and all will be happy on earth when each man does what he knows is right, and the end will be more beautiful than any can dream with their limited knowledge. And all will speed the day who work for the earth now. All must be told of this work that they too may have their opportunity to help on earth. This is the eighth lesson. 37 NINTH LESSON WHEN man once begins to lead the life of the spirit, he will be very loving to every one around him, and others will be led into the way of life because of what he is. All exert an influence on those about them, and each one in this way is his brother's keeper on earth, but no one must try to force his brother, because he must be free to choose as he will. All who freely come to God are of the spirit, and whoever will be of help to this earth will be of the kingdom, and all who are willing to work will be needed. When men will be able to work without listening to the call of the senses, then they will be pure spirit, and when the day comes that they are pure spirit, they will be very near to little children. For until the ma- 38 NINTH LESSON terial things of life lead them astray little children are very near the spirit world, and often a little child will see and hear what their other more materialistic elders do not perceive until they are of the spirit. And as a child grows in knowledge, he will be better able to learn, and as a child unfolds, he should turn his face to God and should be like a flower, and all the troubles of the life he leads should be like the gentle rain, which only makes him grow better and more beautiful. When men learn this truth there will be no more orphan asylums to stunt the chil- dren's minds and hearts, but each will take his brother's child and care for it as his own. And each one will teach all children of the love of God and of His goodness, and each will share in this work and each will open his doors to all brothers, and all life will be a different thing. 39 TO WALK WITH GOD Many are called but few are chosen to do this work, and all who can must do their part on earth and afterwards too. All who are able should adopt little children. Children brought up by those who listen to the spirit are better fitted to do their work on earth, and environment is far more potent than people think. All who are doing this are doing God's work. This is the ninth lesson. 40 TENTH LESSON WHEN the world actually will do God's work, as it should, all men will be better able to do what they should do now, and when that day conies all will be pure spirit. When men turn to God they are filled with love and trust and wisdom, and all who live in that day will be happy, and all who are guided by God are helping that day, and all who do not work with God are delaying that day. When men realize this, they will work harder. All must learn however, and this is the reason that we are permitted to teach all who can to write. All over the world there is an awaken- ing to this work and we will work the harder, that all may have the opportunity to learn these truths, and all will be done 41 TO WALK WITH GOD that can be done to teach the world. All fcrho are widening their knowledge of spirit- ual forces will be the teachers of the world. Many will not be able to teach because they do not believe, and many will not listen. All however must be given the op- portunity to learn, and all who do not take their opportunity will be delayed and much time will be lost to them on the next plane, and they will suffer because they were blind and deaf. And others will suffer too be- cause all will have longer to wait, and all will be sorry at the last day because they were stupid and blind to the many indica- tions God gave them, and so all will be punished, but the punishment of those who work will be quite other than that of those who do not try and eventually all will be together at the Mercy-seat of God, and the love of God is above all comprehension. Even we do not know what the end will be, 42 TENTH LESSON but it will be far beyond anything we can imagine now. Some men are not able to believe because their whole education is built on the things that can be logically proven, and all spirit- ual things must be felt by the soul. And so they are not always to blame and they will be judged according to their true de- serts, for God is love and mercy and He judges according to a man's heart, and a man is a child of God always first. His love knows no limit and He rejoices more over one who finds the way than over many who do not stumble. For each will be judged according to his least intention and according to his best effort, and all men will know that it is just and better than they deserve. This is the tenth lesson. 43 ELEVENTH LESSON WHEN men turn to God, they will show their change of heart in their daily life, and they will be better able to be in close sympathy with all their fellows, and a new light will be in them, and all wiio see that light will know the power of the spirit. And all who know this special light will be better able to help the world and to guide others to God, for it is a beautiful thing to do this w r ork for the world. And all men will in time be better able to teach others, and all must do their w T ork no matter where they may be placed in life, and all who work will be happy, for all will be able to do better because of this work. And all will feel more close to God and able to do His will and when men are in U ELEVENTH LESSON closer touch with God, this will be a differ- ent world, for all the world needs is love and a real desire to do God's will to make it a lovely dwelling-place, and some day it will be that. When that day comes, man will be filled with the spirit of God and God's will will be his only desire, and all life will be changed and ever he will be in the spirit. And man will be very near to God and, like the prophets of old, he will " walk with God," and all will be able then to teach spiritual truths to little children and to all who are delayed. All who live in that day will be blessed and then will begin the thousand years fore- told to those who are in the spirit with Christ, and all who work to make that day come more quickly are of the spiritual forces, and so the dream of peace on earth, good will towards men will come to pass, 45 TO WALK WITH GOD and all men will be able to do more and go further than they now imagine. And those who are willing to work now will be bringing that day nearer, and they must teach all who will listen, for all will be willing to listen if they are only told in the right way. All who ask must be answered and all who truly seek shall find, and whoever re- fuses to give of this living water is deny- ing God. All will freely give when they know what they do, for man is stupid and blind and not bad, and when his eyes are open he will do what he knows is right. All must work with their full strength and hasten the day, for the time is short for each one on earth and he must use his time to the best advantage, lest, like the foolish virgins, he be outside the door when the bridegroom comes. This is the eleventh lesson. 46 TWELFTH LESSON AND when man does what he should, he will be able to teach all who are willing to learn, and whoever is able to teach will be of the spirit, and eventually will be spiritually of God. It is a great thing to be of this work, and who- ever is of the spiritual forces will believe in this eventually, and will teach others to believe, and all will take part in this work for the world. And each will share his good things with all others, and each will share his joy and share the sorrows of others, and whoever is not able to do this, is not of the spirit, and whoever is not of the spirit is not of God. Each must be a source of joy and comfort to all who are near them, and each must teach the other how to find his spiritual 47 TO WALK WITH GOD forces, and all must do their work with their full strength, and all will be in this way co-partners with God. For thus to do God's work is to be actu- ally a partner of God, and when eventually man learns what part he has played in crea- tion, he will be very proud that he was permitted the chance to do this work. For those who do this work are hastening the end which all desire to see come, and each will greet that force to which he belongs, and the end is much to be desired. And then will come the great peace when eternity will only have begun, and after this will come the joy of the morning when all darkness will disappear, and other spirits will be on earth as they are now on the other planets. And on that day all will be filled with love and truth and sympathy and joy and understanding and be a part of the spirit, 48 TWELFTH LESSON and when men are of the spirit, they will have every attribute of God, and they will be entirely God-like and will be forces of God to do His will, and of their ultimate evolution even we do not know, only it will be very beautiful — far beyond the great- est dreams we can dream today. And all will be overcome by the only truth that on earth they were too selfish and blind to seek, and above all, each will seek to find those whom he has hurt, and to all of the spirit this will be a great and glorious work. And to these eventually will be the best end of all. And here the lessons end. 49 Second Series FIRST LESSON ALL nature is made up of forces, and the knowledge of these forces and how to use them is of the utmost importance. All forces are divided into seven, and these seven are again each divided into seven, and so on into infinity. All who work in the right spirit belong to some one of these forces. The great, first forces are those we have already given you: will, knowledge, joy, truth, sympathy, understanding, and love. Love is the greatest of these and encircles all the others. All are dependent on each other and yet each is complete in itself. All are interwoven and yet each is whole. 50 FIKST LESSON All do not tell the same truth but they all tell the truth. All do not see the same pic- ture but they see a part, and they tell of that which they know and of what they see. All do not tell the same truth, but they tell of a part of the same truth. All do not think the same thoughts and so the stories vary, and there are many sides to the same thing and each may .be right and com- plete in itself. Truth is many-sided and hard for the finite mind to comprehend. We can never hope to know all, and yet we have not the least idea how far we may go or how much we may learn in the end. Those who work, however, will have in- struction in these things, and will acquire a great knowledge not given to other men. All who work are a part of creation itself and are doing God's work, and all who do God's work are co-partners of God, so that 51 TO WALK WITH GOD eventually they will be one with the Father. This is no small part that each man is called upon to play in God's great scheme, and all who fail to do their part eventually will belong to those who are outside the door and who have no real share in the great end, and bitter will their sorrow be ! All will be in the end at the Mercy-seat, but both he who does not listen and he who turns aside for his own pleasure will never enter at the same door as he who does his part, and only God can know what his loss is for only God knows what will be that glorious end. The spiritual forces in the universe are God's messengers to man, sent to bring man to himself and to teach man the way to eternal life and to God, and all must learn of these forces and how to use them. The greatest force in the universe is love. Love must be all-embracing, all-including, 52 FIKST LESSON all-enduring. There is no one and no thing that can be left out of God's love and we must try to be like Him. All love is divine, whether it is of man or beast, and all is a part of the forces of God. All will be a part of the great end, and all have their place in creation and will be at the end a part of God. All will do God's work when they know what they miss in failing to follow His will. His will is very easy to do. It is to love your brother and to listen to God's messen- gers and to pray for guidance, and all good will be added to God's children wherever they may be or whatever they may do. And here ends the first lesson. 53 Second Series SECOND LESSON ALL who are willing to work are needed on earth to help in this great work of creation, for it is the work of creation, and the greatest work imaginable, and a wonderful experience to be allowed to share therein. All will have a part who follow their guides, and all these guides are waiting for is that man shall listen to God's messengers, and each day it will become easier to do because it only means love and service to your fellow- man. All who give this will be in those forces which we call Circles, and all can be of the Circles by following the teaching of Christ. It is not hard to do. Love your brother 54 SECOND LESSON and do to him what you would like to have him do to you, for all of life is just that one lesson, and those who do not learn it there are delayed here. There are many kinds of forces but noth- ing but one's own will can overcome self- ishness. Selfishness is the earthly sin, and all light there will be destroyed if you do not overcome this evil, and there will be only a shadow of light until this is over- come. Selfishness is the death of the soul. It creates all the trouble and evil of earth and is alive only to its own desire, and all who would be of God must overcome this selfishness, for it is like a canker in the heart of a flower. All who try can overcome this, but only those who grow in earthly love can be sure of their victory over this arch-enemy of mankind and of the forces of God. Those who work progress little by little, 55 TO WALK WITH GOD and in the end the change is great. It is not easy for only in struggle is character built, and all of eternity is a long time in which to arrive at perfection which is where we will eventually come. All of life tends to perfection. Beasts and birds, flowers and trees all follow the same path to God and to the ultimate end, and all are ever moving upward and all do their part in this scheme. Only man alone desires his own small place. All of God's creatures are obedient to their forces except man, and when at last man comes under the law, the last destruc- tive force will be vanquished and all will be in harmony, and all can live together in peace. This is the second lesson. 56 Second Series THIRD LESSON WHERE is the man who will will- ingly give np his own pleas- ure unless he knows it is for his own good? Those who give up their pleasure for the sake of others will benefit in many ways. They will be more lovely spiritually and will eventually be happier. Those who give up their pleasure for others are the spirits of God. Those who are unselfish are spirits of God. Those who are especially fond of their own way are not spirits of God. Those who wish to learn to be otherwise will eventually be spirits of God. All who would learn will eventually be taught. AH who listen to the voice of the spirit within 57 TO WALK WITH GOD them will learn the actual truth there on earth. All who work will achieve, and all who achieve will grow in spiritual power. One never stands still, one goes either up or down. All who wish to grow must struggle on the way to spiritual life, for it is not easily acquired, this light by which to live, and those who once enter on this path are never satisfied with the darker way and will continue finally to the end. All who work are welcomed by the spir- itual forces and all are to arouse those whom they can to work. It is like the ripple made by a stone thrown in the water, ever grow- ing larger and larger. When this is understood, more and more people will practically be teachers of the forces to men, and as they teach, they will grow in all understanding and wisdom. No one must ever let the sun go down 58 THIRD LESSON without talking of this truth to some one, for it is a never-failing source of comfort and joy to those who tell and to those who listen, and all who give the message to others are planting the seed of God's king- dom and are children of God. All who listen with an open mind will in time become children of God, and even those who will not listen will be bettered by the teaching they do not then accept. All who are bettered have their chance to learn even unto the end of the world, and so no oppor- tunity must be overlooked to do this work. For on your doing this depends the welfare of many souls, and in this way each is his brother's keeper. Those who do their part are willing to give time and love to each inquiring soul, for all must be fed and God is the bread of life, and all must give especially to those who seek, for those who seek are of God, 59 TO WALK WITH GOD and will be of Him always, and His children are very dear to Him, and, like the good shepherd, He cannot bear to lose one of his flock. This is the third lesson. 60 Second Series FOURTH LESSON THOSE who would learn the truth will listen to these teachings. Those who listen long enough will learn to think for themselves and when once they begin to think, they will very soon begin to live the life eternal on earth. Those who begin will start others on the way, and all who start will be in time chil- dren of God. Whenever God teaches man the truth, He does so for man's own advan- tage, and all who learn there or here are able to teach others. Life has very little joy that is not joy of the spirit. The material things of life bring only dissatisfaction and do not eventually make for happiness, while the spiritual 61 TO WALK WITH GOD bring many joys. All who work in a spirit- ual way are doing what will bring the great- est satisfaction to themselves in the end. All who work will eventually become chil- dren of light, and until all are of light, all must wait for the great and glorious end. All are willing to wait but all are not will- ing to be made to wait. All are not willing to wait for those who are too lazy or too bent on their pleasure to do their part. All who work follow the law, because to try to do your part is to be under the law. All who really try succeed, and all who succeed are of the forces of God, and will be helped as they do not dream by this evidence of God's love and power. Those who drink of this stream will never thirst again, but those who refuse to take their opportunities will be very sad, for those who refuse to help in God's work will never regain their full power as spiritual 62 FOURTH LESSON forces, and no matter how they may try, in the future life they will never be able to learn in the same way as they would have learned if they had cultivated faith and love while on earth. And, while they will go on to the end with all others, they will be of another and lower spiritual degree, and while in the love of God, they will not be as utterly His as those who willingly obey. For this reason it is most important that this is taught to all who will listen. Life is a great opportunity and all must be able to have their share of its tremendous lessons. All who will help will be the gainers, and all who eventually work will be of the kingdom. Do not, therefore, lose time, for time is golden and each minute a precious oppor- tunity to do God's work. This is the fourth lesson. 63 Second Series FIFTH LESSON THOSE who work must begin by lov- ing each other and by loving all with whom they come in contact, for only by love of man is love of God to be learned. All do not however learn this in the same way and each one must find the path by which he can do the most, and to each one the way will be opened and he will learn to follow his guides. This way is the only true way to happiness on earth, and, when eventually man comes here, he will be better able to continue his work. All that he needs is will, and will leads to knowledge, and knowledge to joy, and joy to truth, and truth to understanding, and understanding to sympathy and sym- 64 FIFTH LESSON pathy to love, and so lie reaches all the Circles from beginning to end. All must work hard to do their part and to be the means of light to others, for all can help in this great work. And when man knows what the reward of his obedience is, he will feel that it is out of all proportion to his services. All that the world can give is as noth- ing to the treasures laid up for the man who works in God's vineyard, and all that he can do is as nothing to his reward. For the love of God is as vast as infinity, and all of eternity will be given to showing how endless it is, and each stage of develop- ment will only bring greater and greater fulness of knowledge of this great love. This is the fifth lesson. 65 Second Series SIXTH LESSON WHEN one wishes to begin to work with his Circles or spirit- ual guides, he must first begin to cultivate love by a constant and persist- ent effort of will, and then he will be on the way to knowledge. All must be as firm of purpose as they know how to be, and each slip must mean a new start. There is no such thing as failure and each time a man stumbles, he must only begin again. Although he is only at the beginning, yet is he of the forces of God, and all forces will guide and wait for each man to do his part. They never weary of waiting, and all who work will be guided into the right way to God. For only by struggle is char- 66 SIXTH LESSON acter built, and only by work, and hard work, is spiritual life attained. Love such as man knows is as nothing to what God knows for His children, and while He is waiting for the eternal work to be finished, He is also working for man's glory and happiness, and all that is between man and God is his own desire for his own way. When man is once on the right path he will never be content with any lesser light. All that God can show him will be a guide to his feet on the way to eternal life and happiness. All that God has to give is for him when he is ready to say " Thy will, not mine, be done." All that heaven holds of bliss, all that earth holds of well-being is for him. All that he can ever be or hope to be is waiting for him, and only his desire to be alone his own master, and his refusal to 67 TO WALK WITH GOD be God's obedient child, stand between him and the spritual guides, and when he learns what he has lost for his independence, he will not be glad that he gained that inde- pendence on earth. All who work will be of the kingdom, no matter how often they fail, and each must only start over again, for by mistakes and failures all people learn sympathy and un- derstanding, and so they grow in spirit and in love of God and man. All who have stumbled will be very kind to those who make the same mistakes, and in this way they are more understanding of others. Whoever would judge his brother, let him first look carefully into his own heart and see what he finds there, for each has some secret weakness which perhaps only God knows, and whoever judges will be judged both by God and man according to his failure to do all that he demanded 68 SIXTH LESSON of others. Whoever is not critical of others will be doing better than the one who judges. Only God can know what a man's inten- tion is and He is a very merciful judge. Those who are kind in their judgments are following in their Father's pathway. All who would be judged according to their least intention and their best effort must do as they would be done by. All who are kind will be kindly dealt with. All who are just will get justice, and all who are merciful will get mercy. This is the sixth lesson. 69 Second Series SEVENTH LESSON ALL who would love must begin by loving those nearest to them, no matter how lowly they may be. Those who turn away from their brother are not doing God's will, and those who love their brother are in the forces of God, for God created all alike and each has his part to play. All who really love each other love God, and all who love God are in His forces, and always will be, unless they turn aside for their own advantage on earth, and who- ever does this is out of the Circles. God will not accept half a heart, and we will not be allowed to teach any one who is not utterly willing to be led. 70 SEVENTH LESSON Those who would work must be pure of purpose and willing to trust to the guid- ance of God. All children who disobey must be punished. Those who turn back will be gladly welcomed. Those who regret are forgiven, and all who think otherwise are wrong, and all otherwise taught are wrongly taught. Those who would be forgiven must pray to God for themselves and for all others who are not in the light. In the light of God's love and approval. Those who are conscious of wrong-doing are no longer in the Circles, and, when they pray, they will know when they are forgiven by the light that will come. Those who would be for- given will pray for this light, and until this light comes, they will know that they are not on the way to God. He who stumbles can begin again if he will be otherwise pure in heart, and all who are desirous of this 71 TO WALK WITH GOD bounty of God must be very sure that they will be willing to be of help to all those who stumble too. No one is without sin of some sort and each must be helpful to all others. Christ said " Go, and sin no more," and those who would be forgiven must for- give. Those who would be of the kingdom will be alive to all ways to help others, and Christ is in all and through all and with all. Those who would forgive must be for- given. Those who would be of the king- dom are of the very Circle of Circles. All fail sometimes but they can easily go on again, and each failure means more strength, and a stronger purpose to do and be better. They will never be as kind as when they themselves know temptation. Those who would help others will never be so busy that they are not able to listen and sympathize. Those who are willing to help 72 SEVENTH LESSON will be a source of comfort to all in dis- tress. Those who are willing to help will be a source of joy to all who turn to them, and eventually will be of the forces of God. All who are of the forces of God will show it in their lives, and whoever follows the spiritual guides will see and hear. All who are of God will be of the forces, be- cause forces are His messengers. All who are of the forces are very pure of heart. All who are pure of heart are the children of God, and all the children of God are very loving to each other. Those who would see and hear must pray for a pure heart and must purge themselves of all material desire. Those who would see and hear must be both kind and loving and must never criticize others or tell their faults, because they would not want theirs told. Those who would see and hear must do their best to live in the love of God, and 73 TO WALK WITH GOD to them shall be added this blessing when they show that they are ready for it. Those who are ready will receive, and those who are not ready and do not believe, will not receive. Those who are purged of sin will be ready when the day comes, and to be purged of sin means to be forgiven, and to be forgiven is to be again in God's light. This is the seventh lesson. 74 Second Series EIGHTH LESSON WHEN man is willing to obey, he is in a better condition to do whatever there is to do, and he will only learn to communicate with his guides through obedience. Those who can obey are not always willing to do so, and those who are willing are of all the forces. All those who believe are obedient. Only those who are willing to obey God's law are obedient to His messengers. All who will say " thy will be done " are obedient to Circles. All who would see and hear will be obedient. All those who obey are willing to do whatever they are told by their guides. Those who obey are happier in their obedi- ence than with all the riches of earth, and 75 TO WALK WITH GOD in their obedience, they gain both heavenly and also earthly treasures, for unto him that hath shall be added. Those who event- ually trust to their Heavenly Father will be led in the end into love of only spiritual things, and when material things are no longer necessary to their happiness, they will have their reward. Those who are struggling with material things are not clear-minded and cannot work as they should, for to work as one should only means to put God first, and lesser things then fall into their proper place. All who are in their own forces are clear- minded and have a light in their spirit, and when this light fails, you can know that you are not working under the law. All who work under the law are happier, and no matter what test is given them, they rise above it. 76 EIGHTH LESSON All who work must be prepared for tests, for only by struggle is strength developed. Those who live the life of the spirit are never critical or unkind to any one. Those who would live this life must not indulge in ill-natured criticism, and must never judge other people's actions, for no one can know all the conditions of his brother's life. Those who would help the world can only do so through love, and love neither judges nor criticizes, and whoever would be helpful must love more and more there on earth. All who love are kind and teach love through their kindly spiritual force on earth. All those who are kind are of the forces of God, and through their Circles teach others to lead the spiritual life, for man, in general, is blind to spiritual things, and he must be awakened there if not to be delayed here. All of life is to learn belief in spiritual 77 TO WALK WITH GOD things which cannot be proved by the ma- terial senses. All of life is a testing of the quality of man's spiritual development. All that he can do is to be done there for opening the eyes of others, because event- ually he will be given a chance to work here, especially in the forces. All who would be of the forces must not be idlers there on earth, for the idler is not of the forces of God. All who would be of Circles must work and work hard, for all of a life is but a moment in which to learn self-control, belief and love, and those who would learn must give time, and be willing to love and believe. This is the eighth lesson. 78 Second Series NINTH LESSON WHEN man realizes what depends on his work there on earth, he will be ashamed of his laziness, and when he knows what is in store for him, he will only be astonished that such a great reward is given for so little in return, for whenever God rewards He rewards a thou- sandfold. And as soon as he knows what he has thrown away he would give all that he pos- sesses to turn back, for if he does not turn on earth, he will not be able to advance here in the way he should, for the lesson of life is to learn to turn to God whenever a man thinks, as naturally as a flower turns to the sun. 79 TO WALK WITH GOD All that God asks is this and it is little to give in return for a great reward. All that man could do would be as nothing, if he spent every moment of his life in striv- ing to work. All that he dreams or imag- ines is as nothing to the great end which finally God ordains for whoever obeys. All that he can eventually do is but a drop in the ocean of love given by God. When man can bring himself to the realization of this he will be amazed to think that he was worthy of such love and compassion, and to each will be given this knowledge and power to see and hear, if he will only be good there on earth. For of old when men were better, they " walked with God," and only since man has become more materialistic has this power been lost, for all power is stifled by mate- rialism, and selfishness is the death of the soul. All who would work must purge their 80 NINTH LESSON hearts of both selfishness and materialism, for those two great evils are the only sins in the earth life, and when once man has overcome them, he will be a pure spirit of love to the world. All who struggle are on the way. All who work will ultimately achieve. All who pray for light will ultimately receive it, and all who receive will teach others the way. And so the work of the spirit will go on more and more on earth, and, when man be- comes what he should be in reality on earth, he will be astonished at the result of God's plan, for all that sinlessness is is to be with- out selfishness or desire for material gain, as Christ was on earth. And man shall become as He was when he too is spirit only, and this will be when he learns the full earth lesson of obedience to God, and only then will he be a spirit. Whenever man is willing to be obedient, 81 TO WALK WITH GOD he will do whatever he is asked to do in Circles. All who would be under the law must learn this. All who would be in the Circles must pray for a pure and obedient heart. All who would be of God must be in His forces. All who would be of the kingdom will begin by prayer and a persistent search for their own forces. All who would be of God must become as little children, willing to be led and trusting in their Father's love, for no love that earth knows is like it in the fulness of its great and utter power to com- prehend and forgive. All who are of God live in another light from that usually known to man. All who are of God will be very loving and be with- out any selfishness towards others, and all who achieve this on earth are of great power when they come here. All who are of God will be very kind in their judgments, and 82 NINTH LESSON will be better able to eventually live the life of the spirit, and the life of the spirit is the only way to be of God. This is the ninth lesson. 83 Second Series TENTH LESSON WHEN man turns of his own ac- cord to God, he will be very glad to be of His forces, and his only wish will be to do as they ask him, and his whole life will be lived in obedience to those forces. And all that they ask is love for those around him, and a willingness to help all who ask for light, for those who seek the light are ever more and more nu- merous, and eventually they will be of the forces too. Those who need help will be given all Circles as guides, and the guides will bring the light they need to each one. Those who work will be helped always and will not be allowed to come to any harm, and those whom the forces guard are helped by God to believe in the truth. 84 TENTH LESSON All who are in His forces are very loving to those about them, and never critical of even the least among men, and although they often are not able to control others, they can refrain from entering into the criticism. And all must learn this, and all must hear the spoken word in silence and in prayer, for only in that way can it be heard. Those who are in the forces of God are meek and lowly of heart. Those who are in these forces are very loving. Those who are in these forces are God's children, and all who are God's children are welcome to the forces. Those who are eventually in forces are God's children. All who would be of God are to seek their own guides. All do not belong to the same force, and so they must find which one is theirs, and when they open the door of their hearts to God, they will be met and guided by their own Circles. 85 TO WALK WITH GOD All who would find their Circles must ap- proach the spiritual world with prayer and a firm desire for only the truth, for if they come in any other spirit, they will be open to evil and other interfering spirits, and this is why so many have not found what they sought. All who come in the right way are wel- comed by the forces of God, and they will find what they seek. All who are pure of heart will be at once in their Circles, and when they begin to work, they will begin to understand what a wonderful world this is. Only those who are welcome to the Cir- cles will ever learn the way to reach those who have gone before. To all others only enough will be given to make them long for more, and that is the reason why so many people are not able to believe in the continuity of personal identity. When they find the truth, they will believe in very 86 TENTH LESSON truth what the prophets have foretold, and they will be sorry for lost time when they might have been in close touch with those whom they had lost on earth. All wilbbe given an opportunity to learn through these lessons, and when they begin to work they will learn how to be in Circles. Whenever any one asks, he will be told of this series of lessons, and when he studies he will be on the way. This is the tenth lesson. 87 Second Series ELEVENTH LESSON WHEN man, in the fulness of his desire for spiritual things, turns to God, he will begin to be able to live as he always should and all that is needed is the steady and persistent desire for the spiritual life. That means the exerting of his will, and, when once he has cultivated that, he will be led into knowledge. And when he has acquired knowledge, he will be led into joy. And through joy he will learn truth, and through truth understanding, and through understanding he will learn symapthy, and then he will begin to really know love. So in this way he will touch all the Cir- cles, and when he does that he will be a real 88 ELEVENTH LESSON spirit, for to be a real spirit is to have all the attributes of God. And all of the truth, all of the forces are contained in these seven Circles. All forces are contained in these first great seven. All powers are therein. All work must be done, unless you wish to fail of final success, with their consent and aid. And of the ultimate end of their possi- bilities, even we who work with all our strength without ceasing, do not know, and those who learn of the ultimate end must wait for eternity. This is the eleventh lesson. 89 Second Series TWELFTH LESSON ALL who work will have their earthly as well as later reward. All who give time and thought and prayer there are actually on the way to all knowledge. Knowledge is of God, and can only be learned through Him, and He will teach more and more to whoever is His obedient child. All the knowledge of the universe is open to him when he turns to God. All power may be his and all forces are at his com- mand. All that he must do is to be willing to obey, and his reward will be far greater than he can dream, and his happiness will be beyond anything that he now knows. All his life will be blessed with content 90 TWELFTH LESSON and well-being, and life will be a song in the heart to each one that follows this path. Put not your trust in princes nor in any son of man ! Put not your trust in the things of this world ! But put your trust in God and He will never fail you. This is the twelfth lesson. 91 APPENDIX As being of possible interest to the reader, we have added the notes of the first four lessons, from June 26th on, showing just how we received the series, also the correction and revision of the same lessons, given at a later date. We have added punctuation and have omitted a few passages which we thought too personal for publication; otherwise the notes are as we took them down from day to day. The words in parentheses are always questions, asked verbally, or our own remarks and explanations; all the rest is what we received through the automatic writing. Saturday, June 26th, 1919. We are here every time you are ready to work. . . . Love we give you always and we ask only faith in return. The light of the world is 0. 1 We are ready to work in earnest now. The world will be better able to understand when old conditions are changed and the world is again in @. The world was more believing a little while ago and when it gets these truths and understands them, it will be filled (filled'?) filled with belief again and men will be better and happier. The new truth is the same i The reader must remember that this symbol as we received it, was six interlacing circles, surrounded by a seventh. ' 92 APPENDIX only the understanding is all different. The light is always the same, but the clouds are not between us and the sun. The truth will be given in these lessons. We will all be with you in this work and we will guard you lest each day evil befall you. We will now begin. The greatest power in the world is love. The love of God surpasses belief and He is able to understand and forgive all. Men cannot always be sure of each other, but they can be sure of God's love and for- giveness. The best way to learn is to love. The only way to learn is to love. Every day of one's life there is opportunity to do God's work for man. Men will not be unkind to one another when they under- stand this truth in the ©, and all will learn there or here. We are all in the love of God. His love is around all and through all and in all. We cannot lose him if we would and © are His messengers. When a man turns away from God and does not believe, God waits until his heart is ready to open to Him and He is never angry. He is a refuge to all who live in sorrow and who are weary and in trouble. He is never too busy to listen to those who need Him and He is a never-failing source of strength to those who pray to Him. We must wait until tomorrow. Love. © Friday, June 27th, 1919. We will continue our lessons. 93 TO WALK WITH GOD The only way to love it to love your brother. Christ said if you do not love your brother, you cannot love God. We little know how true this is for we must learn the good that is in every human soul. We all are better able to (marked effort) benefit the world when we look with kindly eyes on our fellow man. We must be able to help others if born of the spirit. The © are God's messengers to man and are sent to show the way to God. Man is not a spirit but he can become one. The lesson of earth is love. All must learn it in the universe. God is love and His children must be love too. We are not able to follow Him if we do not follow the teaching of Christ, and Christ said love your brother as yourself. Will we continue the lesson? (Is that the end of the first lesson?) Yes. (We should like to go on.) We will not do the world any good if we do not help each other for the world is the place where the spirit will become manifest if we cultivate it, and we can only do so by following the teaching of Christ. We are little children who are easily confused by the million things of the material life and God is wait- ing for us to believe the messengers He has sent to us from time to time. We are not told better in this world and each one must be let go his own way until he turns like a tired child to his ®. We are only able to love really when we forget ourselves 94 APPENDIX and work only for others and be kind to all no matter what they do or are. It is actually a part of each man's development to be told this whether he accepts it or not. Each man is free to do what he will as he chooses. All will however learn the lesson sometime and those who do not learn it there are delayed here. This is the second lesson. (Spirit, we love your lessons.) And we © love to teach you because we are of the same 0. (Do the circles mean the force of the spirit of love or joy or truth?) Yes, we are the Comforter promised by Christ to the world and men must believe to become like Him on this earth, and (writing indistinct) be guides to 0. (Is that right?) Be guided by ©. (Is there anything more before we go?) Love ®. Saturday, June 28th, 1919. We will go on. The only work that is worth while is work for others ©. We are in a world of material things and the lesson of life really is belief in spirit- ual things, which cannot be proved by the senses. (In answer to some remark:) We tell the truth and you must believe. Here or there all must learn. We only ask faith and give you ©. We must not work when we are tired. Anne is tired. We will write more in a few minutes. 95 TO WALK WITH GOD (Here came several moments of conversation of a personal nature and the next sentence came in answer to a question.) Death is never painful. (It is not unnatural, is it, to want to save the one you love from death?) No, all human love of life is full of fears. All human love is full of fears. All human love is but the shadow of the love that we know will be ours (repeated) will be ours when we are together here. We will continue. We are not able to learn by ourselves. We must pray for the spirit of hu (Humanity?) No. (Humility?) Yes. The © are those who help man- kind in the way to God and each man who seeks can find the truth. All men must learn to pray. Peace will God give to him who seeks the life eternal. We will be able to work after life there * is ended ©, and the earlier we begin to work the better life we will have. © are calling to men to love their fellow men and men are deaf and will not listen. When men do listen the world will be changed and © will be guides to men if they listen to ©, and will teach men the way to peace and truth and eternal life. i The writing always uses " There " in referring to our world and " here " in referring to the world beyond. 96 APPENDIX We are here to learn love and faith, love of God through love of man, faith through (words we could not make out. Many efforts on our part. Finally:) We will not continue. . . . Love ©. Monday, June 30th, 1919. We will continue. The world will be better able to understand when it is willing to listen and it will listen now because it so full of sorrow. The life of © is the only way to life eternal and the way to Christ. We will not go on today. (What is wrong?) Anne does not rest and our force is not sufficient. (We are so sorry.) We will continue. Christ is the way to God and all men must come to Him sooner or later. The way is open to all who seek and all who ask must be answered. This is the way to truth eternal. Do not hold any of those who seek back by doubt of the truth we have given you. The work God has given you is to teach because you both do believe. The work is to teach ever and always. We will be your guides in this work for those you teach and we will be © of learning to man. Men are like stupid children who don't know what they want and they are waiting until a miracle comes. We never can work miracles because all is done by law. 97 TO WALK WITH GOD We will continue tomorrow. We are here. (We took this to mean that we might ask ques- tions.) (A visitor. Ask why the answers to questions are so indefinite. H.l asks though not agreeing that they are indefinite.) Because we only teach spiritual truths and the spirit must apprehend, and if it is in the ® it will understand. (Visitor. Where is the spirit world?) All about the universe there are many worlds and each one is among the spaces which are filled with spirits in different states of development. (Spirit, you told us you never were on earth — are most teachers like you?) No, most of them have been on earth. . . . We will always be near you when you need us. (Visitor. If we learn to write, can we get in touch with the people we love who are with you?) God is good and He will always keep you close to those you love and need, but you must not call so often that you interfere with their work and progress here. Love ®. 1 (Spirit, what are the dwellers on other planets like?) All are like you in form. All are made in the likeness of God. i From the sitting of July 8th. 98 APPENDIX (Are they of different degrees of development in intelligence?) That we do not know as we are familiar only with a few. (Are the few you know alike?) Yes, but some are better temperamentally and less wilful. (Where do we stand?) In ©. (But I mean in order of intelligence compared to the other planets you know?) That we cannot tell because we judge differently, and intentions and heart count for more than with you. Tuesday, July 1st, 1919. We are here. (Was that word in answer to our visitor yesterday spaces or stars?) Spaces. (Shall we give you the end of yesterday's lesson?) Not necessary. When we are shut within our ® we are in the love of God and all harm is shut away from us. Not able to work today. Anne is too tired. (Can't you try? I am so willing.) No, we get no response from the mind. (We can ask questions. Will capital and labour ever be able to really meet?) 99 TO WALK WITH GOD No, not now, both are too blind. But in time the labouring classes will see that each one is necessary to the welfare of the other. (Spirit, why can you give us a long answer like that and yet cannot give us the lesson?) Because when Anne is tired the © are not able to use her psychic mind. (How am I to rest more?) You must not worry about things that do not matter. The hospital is not a necessary thing for Anne. She ought to rest after lunch and be fresh for this most important work. Wednesday, July 2nd, 1919. We are here. We are all materially of the same elements that we were on earth only less cumbrous than there, and when • (Here came a long word which we could not make out. It might have been three words run together or one long one. We tried and tried, the planchette would not go on until we found it.) (Dominating'?) No. (Do we change?) No. (Dwelling in?) No. (Everlasting?) No. (Elementally?) Yes, elementally the same we have the same emo- tions and life. We love and ® are busy with the 100 APPENDIX various works which occupied them while they were on earth. (Spirit, we love this lesson.) We are telling the truth of the life here and when men realize this truth they will turn towards the love of God as we do here and then will come the millen- nium foretold to those who were in the ? with Christ. (Here came an experience which was very trying for us. The writing had been good and clear except in the case noted and one other word "towards" which we had to have repeated. In this last sen- tence came again a word which we could not make out, or, as before, it might have been two or three words run together. In the first case we had both said that it was a good proof when we could not get the word, that it was not our sub-conscious mind dictating, and again we seemed to have been given the test. We worked an hour and a half over that one word and with no result.) (We tried many terms.) Work until you get it. Work and we will help you. (We are so discouraged. Do let us go on.) Do not be discouraged. We will help you. (Twice the word was re- written but we could not get it.) We will all help you. (Anne said she had to go.) No, do not go today. 101 TO WALK WITH GOD (Anne waited and we tried and tried until finally she was obliged to leave.) Thursday, July 3rd, 1919. We are here. We will tell you what we do here and how we work ever becoming better able to help those who are ready to listen to the ©. There are many kinds of © and each has its own particular work. There are many kinds of © and each © is able to write to those of its own ©. We are not all willing to work unselfishly, intelligently for others and until we are © will wait. The end © is wait- ing for is the unfolding of man's heart to God. When men become as little children the world will be another place and love will be without envy or malice. We are able to write better today. When we actually are 1 very loving we will never be im- patient and the best way to become loving is to become patient. Those who do their duty achieve merit but they must love too. Those who would learn to love must love all those they are with in the © and when they are able to love those of the © they will love others. Christ believed in love and iWe realized later that the pencil had written "are actually," but at the time we were not sure of the word and asked "is that actually?" Pencil started to write "no" and then changed to "yes" and wrote "are" after the " actually." 102 APPENDIX worked through love. The power of love is unlimited and can do all things. Those of the © on earth will be more and accomplish more for others if they love fully. .The reason the world is so bad is lack of love. And when we love the work of God — (Was that word work?) work, we will do all in our power to help the world become a better place. We must not be discouraged because there is so much to be done. Life goes on through all eternity and love must be learned there or here. Christ was the way and the truth and the life; those who drink of this stream will never thirst or be blind to occasions to help those whom they are near. And all of life is service. We are all of us bound together. We are all children of ® and affection is needed to do our best here. We are all in the love of Christ and men must become children of God to love with their best effort. Arid when they do His will, they will be afterwards children of life ©. We will continue tomorrow. . . . (Spirit, that was so hard for us yesterday. Can't you give us one word on it?) We are not yet able to use your mind. . . . (Shall we leave it?) Yes, for the present. It will be better until we are able to write better. (Anything more?) Love ®. 103 TO WALK WITH GOD Friday, July 4th, 1919. We are here. There are many kinds of ©. Some © are © of both love and force while some are only of love. There are many © and each calls to its own ©. We of the © of love are the writing © to those of love, while those of © of forces are all © which call only to force. There are all kinds of © in the universe and each has its own part to play. There are all kinds of people in the world and they are all in the ©. We of the © of love are better able to teach love to those around us. All must learn and the sooner, the better. The world needs love more than ever. Men are material and absorbed in the things of this world which are of no value and they must put away the things of earth and learn the things of the spirit. There are these © and © are willing to teach men all they would know of the future life, and © can only do this to ©. This is your and Anne's work and you must work hard to make up for wasted time. There is much to be done and we will help you and © will guard you from all evil. These lessons are to be published. © will find the publisher. . . . (How shall we know where the third lesson ends?) We will tell you where the beginning and end of each lesson is. We will now begin on the afternoon lesson. 104 APPENDIX When men turn to God they are seemingly like little children, willing to follow His will, and Christ is the only way to learn and be unselfish. We are after all children of God and our © are guides to Him. Love and service are the only things worth while in this world and whoever will actually give himself is doing His Father's work and is a worthy child of God. There are many to work but few who know how. All © are the teachers to © and all © lead to God. (We must find a word for circles. Forces?) Forces and © are the same in ©. (But, Spirit, you said circles were forces. How can a force be a force?) Forces are of many kinds and all of many parts. (Yes, the force of love can be divided into affec- tion and kindly liking and so on.) Anne's definition is right. The greatest of all forces is love. Love is the fulfilling of the law. Love is kind to all no matter how lowly and the only guide to ©. Love will be the force to reach the world there and here and only when men love will they become believers in the life of the ©. And to become the children of God men must listen to ©. We will continue tomorrow. (Could that last circle be equivalent to the spirit within them?) Yes. Love ©. 105 TO WALK WITH GOD Saturday, July 5th, 1919. We are here. When we are able to write alone we will of course tell you many more personal things, but at present we want you to work only at the lessons. These © are the only way to get in touch with those who have gone before without danger to yourselves from the evil forces who are ever seeking to break in on all work of this kind of teaching, because they are deterrent to ®. (Deterrent to circles'?) Yes, there are many kinds of deterrent forces in the universe that wish to hinder all progress and these forces will do all they can to deter man from becoming that which he must become on earth if possible, and if not there he will be delayed here. Man led willingly. (We could not read this at first. Asked to repeat, wrote:) Man is willing to be led to God if his mind can conceive the great senselessness of earthly things, but he is bewildered by the senses and is blind to his own future. When he realizes what he has lost he will be only so willing to work that it will be hard to keep him from overworking, and that he must not do either. There is reason in all things and to overwork is also breaking the law. God made heaven and earth in six days and rested the seventh, man must have his periods of rest on earth and here. 106 APPENDIX We all rest when we are tired and there is a won- derful rest here which is not like your sleep but which refreshes us even more. We rest in a beau- tiful tableland surrounded by hills with little streams of water flowing on all sides. There we rest until we are ready to work again. Flowers of all sorts and of a beauty unknown to earth are all about us, and the welcoming spirit of the place serves us with all we need. There is no truth in this, we are affectionless and not interested in the world. We love as you do. We are more interested than ever in those we loved on earth and our one desire is to help them and have them with us in this beautiful place. Christ has given us the key and we must open the door. (H to Anne. I think this is another person writ- ing today.) No, it is the same 0. We all will come here in time only why delay coming when the way is clearly shown to all who will open their minds. And it is so beautiful here and all listen to music when they wish. When we work we are filled with joy and we are full of love for all. (Anne to H, "It isn't easy to love when you are tired.") That is the reason for rest. Life is so full of beauty if you will only see it. Those rested can see beauty even in those who are not in accord with 107 TO WALK WITH GOD anything of a greatly suffering humanity, and all is for the good of the individual. (Perhaps the above was in answer to a remark about the suffering at the hospital.) There are all kinds of things here which we have never known on earth, all kinds of flowers and trees and birds and animals. We are never better able to work than here. We are after all here in our full capacity as ©. We are all working for the world. (Are circles the spiritual forces that work for mankind?) No, not altogether. We work for the earth but later we will go on to other planes with other work for the work of God. (What plane are you on now?) The third plane. All are in touch with the earth. All in the third plane are the teachers for the earth. (Spirit, Mrs. wants to send greetings to her husband and daughter — is that possible? Not now. But later we will show you how to stretch forth and find those whom you will in ®. There are all kinds of work to be done and we must not waste time. We all are here and must keep to business. We are glad to teach but the time is short. When we work here we work with all our strength and until we are tired, then we rest in one of these beautiful resting places of this land. (What was that last word?) 108 APPENDIX Land. There are these beautiful places and each is different and each equally beautiful. All who are weary come here and all are refreshed. Teachers from other planes come to us here and teach us higher spiritual lessons, and as the will of God is unfolded to us, we © are filled with joy that we have a place in this wonderful work. We will con- tinue tomorrow. Love ®. Sunday, July 6th, 1919. We are here. When the will of God is done on earth, it leads each person to the © telling them how to work in ©, and each one encounters elements with which he is best fitted to work. When man will work with the ©, he will come into his foretold inheritance and he will be better able to develop there on earth and he will have his eyes really opened to the ©. These © are only actually waiting for man to awaken and they do all in their power to arouse him. When once he is awake he must awaken others, and this is the work to which you are called by the ©. When once one is alive to these ©, one has endless possibilities. Life will never again be the same and the material things will no longer have any weight and are of no value. This is the end of the fourth lesson. Wednesday, July 16th, 1919. . . . and here the lessons end. Tomorrow we will 109 TO WAXK WITH GOD begin the revision and when that is finished, you will send the manuscript. . . . Thursday, July 17th, 1919. (If any readers should have the patience to try to fit in for themselves the terms given as equiva- lents for the symbol, we would remind them that only the circles used in the lessons were ever inter- preted. No substitute words were supplied for the circles used in the conversations interspersed in the lessons.) We are here and now we will begin the revision. The first thing to do is to decide on a name. (Do you want us to decide?) We will help you. The eleventh lesson has a name. (Anne, after looking at the lesson, " Is it The New light?") No. (Is it to walk with God!) Yes. (To Walk or While Man Walks?) To Walk with God, an experience in Automatic Writing. Then you will write of your experience, leaving out anything that is too personal. And do not be afraid of the ridicule of those who do not understand, for, when they read, many will believe. And sign your initials, 1 and have a preface. . . . iWe were afterwards told to sign our full names. 110 APPENDIX (Have you any choice as to who should write the preface?) Yes, both of you must agree on it and it must be very clear. Then we will begin on the lessons. The very first lesson is almost correct There is a mistake in the fourth paragraph. In place of ®, put spirit and the word force in parenthesis. The second © is " spiritual forces," and the third © is the same. This is all in the first lesson. And in the second lesson, the first © is "spiritual guides." That is all in the second lesson. Here the lesson is much broken. (Discussion between Anne and H. H thought Anne would give closer attention if she did not open her note-book.) Anne is right. She must read it for us to get what is printed by you. (Note. Up to this time, except when we had looked in the eleventh lesson for a title, we had not had our books open and though Anne tried now to open her book and follow the lessons, the planchette wrote so fast that she had to give up all attempt at read- ing, and, as we have said in the preface, it was not until the writing of that day ended that we could see how well the given words fitted into the text. After this first day of revising we always had our books in front of us, and generally one of us read the lesson in question very slowly, both of us keeping 111 TO WALK WITH GOD our hands on the planchette, ready for any correction or change.) Leave out that first (h). 1 (Shall we skip conversations or give them with the lessons?) Just the lesson. The first © following humility is 11 spiritual guides." Leave the second © out. " Spiritual Guides " is the next ©. " Spiritual forces " is the next ©. " The voice of the spirit " is the fifth. " The witness of the spirit to men who listen and hear the still, small voice within them." 2 The sixth ©, " the spirit." Leave out the ? (Is that word extraneous?) Yes, extraneous matter. Leave out that part about you as teachers. (Discussion between us as to where next lesson began.) "We are all materially" begins the fourth lesson. When there. (It means put "when there" in place of "than there." Sentence should read "less cumbrous than when there.") . . . right. © should be " all spiritual forces." i Third lesson. 2 Put in after " love of God through love of man, faith through, etc." 112 APPENDIX Leave out the rest of that sitting and begin with the sentence "we will tell." The first © is "these guides." The second is "guides." The third is " spiritual forces." The fourth is " force " and the fifth too. The sixth is " the spiritual guides." The seventh is "these spiritual guides." The " achieve merit " should be " do well." The eighth reads " all those whom they live with. And when they learn to love these, they will love all." The tenth © u those who are guided by spiritual guides." The eleventh ©, " spiritual forces." The twelfth, omit. We omit the last © because it is unnecessary. The next ©, " spiritual forces." Omit the second, and the third is " forces." The fourth is " forces." The fifth is " kind." The sixth is "forces." The seventh is "power. While to the forces of force only force calls." The tenth is "powers." The eleventh is " spirit." The twelfth is " spirit." We will continue tomorrow. (We kept our hands on but the pencil wrote with great decision:) Love ©. 113 TO WALK WITH GOD Friday, July 18th, 1919. We are here. The first thing to do is to decide on the silence. We cannot work if you talk together. " These spiritual forces." Second ® reads " they." Third reads "they." Fourth reads "those of their own kind." Fifth reads " spiritual guides." Sixth is " spiritual guides." Seventh is " those of their spirit in the world." (This sentence we could not get at first. " Shall we go on and come back to it, Spirit?") Do we work or play? (long pause.) We will re- write. (Sentence written as above.) We will continue. The eighth, "spiritual guides." The ninth, S. G. (Is that spiritual guides? We both laughed.) Yes. Love will be the force to teach the world. 1 The tenth is " spirit." 2 i In place of " the force to reach the world." 2 Anne had numbered the circles ahead in her note- book for clearness. H, who was not following in the note-book, read off "the tenth is spirit." Anne said " Wrong, it is the eleventh." Looking back she found she had made a mistake in numbering and it was the tenth circle. Interesting because it could not have 114 APPENDIX The eleventh is " what their guides tell them." Begin at " these ©." The first ® is " spiritual forces." Do not put in deterrent circles (word circles written out.) (Are both first and second circles "spiritual forces"? You only put one.) Yes. Omit "man led willingly." (I wish they would leave out that about God work- ing six days and resting the seventh.) We only tell the truth. (Anne, sotto voce, " It's a question of what a day means.") And eventually all will understand the meaning of a day. . . . The welcoming spirit of the place waits upon both our bodies and our souls. (Pause.) Not waits, serves. Not affectionless, without affection. (In answer to a comment:) We are not telling all, only a little, and it is very beautiful here and all who wish listen to beautiful music. Omit that paragraph " life is so full of beauty." ® is " spirits." Begin at "when." Begin "when we work here." ©, " we of the circles of God." ©, " would be these spiritual guides." " To work in the world for God." been Anne's mind, and, as H was not following, it could not well have been hers. 115 TO WALK WITH GOD " Guides." " Spiritual forces." "Forces." " Spirit." u Spiritual powers." (End of fourth lesson.) Saturday, July 19th, 1919. . . . Tomorrow we will go over them once more. Then we will be ready to publish when you have revised your part. (Will you help us with our revision?) We will tell you when you ask. Sunday, July 20th, 1919. (Additional corrections for first four lessons.) We are here. We will begin on the first lesson. Anne will read. (Shall I begin?) Yes. (Anne reads first lesson, ending with "this is the end of the first lesson.") That is correct. (H. Spirit, I think the expression "spirit and force in parenthesis" would be confusing to most people.) There is no better way to say it in your language. (Second lesson read.) " We are not told better in this world because — " * i" Because" put in place of "and"; making sen- 116 APPENDIX (End of second lesson.) That is correct. ( Third lesson read. ) " The work of the world only is to — " * (Anne reads the corrected sentence.) Yes. " On the way to God." 2 " The eternal life." 3 (Attempted sentence. Repeated.) "We will be able to and again here" (Is this the sentence "We will be able to work again here when life there is ended"?) Yes. " Spiritual forces will always be guides." 4 (End of third lesson.) That is correct. (May we put "do not" for "don't"? Men are like stupid children.) tence read : " We are not told better in this world because each one must be let go, etc." i " Work " put into first paragraph of Third Lesson, making sentence read " the work of the world only is to learn how to believe in spiritual things." 2 Instead of * in the way to God," making sentence read " The spiritual guides are those who help mankind on the way to God." 3 Instead of " the life eternal," making sentence read u Peace will God give to him who seeks the eternal life." * Instead of " spiritual forces will be guides." See Third Lesson. 117 TO WALK WITH GOD Yes, change that. (Fourth lesson.) " We love as we did there." x " We who are in the spirit of love." 2 " The welcoming guardian." 3 Leave out the first " and." 4 We are (word we could not get. We waited for it to be repeated.) Will we work? (Is that word "working"?) making sentence read "We are after all working here?) That is right now. " The elements." 5 " Will be of no value." 6 (This is the- end of the fourth lesson.) That is correct. i Instead of just " we love." See Fourth Lesson. Sentence should read " We love as we did there and all spiritual forces are busy." 2 Instead of " we of the forces of love," making sen- tence read " We who are in the spirit of love are better able, etc." a Instead of " the welcoming spirit," making sen- tence read "the welcoming guardian of the place." * Making sentence read " It is very beautiful here." s Instead of " elements," making sentence read " and each one encounters the elements, etc." 6 Instead of " are of no value," making sentence read "material things will no longer have any weight and will be of no value." 118 APPENDIX . . . and here the lessons end — now do your part. (Our idea would be to print the sittings almost exactly as we have them, taking out only a few personal things, putting in conversations and all, and then put in the corrected lessons again at the end — would you approve of that?) Yes, but put the corrected lessons at the beginning. Monday, July 21st, 1919. We are here. In the preface you will tell how you began this work and that from time to time visitors came in while you were working. That they were always welcome when they too were on the spiritual search, but that only those in earnest were welcome. And that you were guarded from all evil influences as all must be if they do this work, for there are ever deterrent forces who try to break in for their own personal ends or to prevent the spiritual guides from teaching man the way to God. That is all. Begin your work and when you are in doubt, call upon us. Thursday, July 31st, 1919. We are here and we will answer questions. . . . (If you have no names on your side, how can you distinguish the person you are speaking of?) We always tell the individual by his force. 119 TO WALK WITH GOD (But the individual is not absorbed by his forced- he retains his individuality, doesn't he?) Yes, of course. (Why do you never use the word death?) Death in the sense you mean is destruction but nothing is destroyed and there is no death. Friday, August 1st, 1919. We are here and are ready to tell you all we can. (Is it necessary to read the notes of the sittings to you to show what we have left out.) No, your judgment is good. (Spirit, we find people coming in very confusing and tiring, is it always necessary to have them?) When any one asks to come they must be allowed to come but they need not come more than once. You must learn to be so serene that nothing disturbs you. . . . (We feel that the ending of our book is rather abrupt. How would you like to end it?) " And when the world reads this account of the truth of these teachings, let each man listen to the voice of the spirit within him.
