Fair Marblehead, how calm and still thou lie'st Lovingly cradled in old ocean's arms, Kissed are thy shores by many a boundiuf; billow, Gifted the pen that would recount thy charms. Thy morning sun in glorious splendor rising Fills thy whole region with its glittering train. It tips each grass blade with its dew-diopped jewels. And forms a mirror of thy crystal main. Blue are the vaulted skies above thee. And, when at night, star-gemmed they brightly shine, Vieing with lights upon thine harbored vessels, They make the .spot a realm almost divine. Green are thy fields decked bright with Flora's treas- ures. And hidden safe in many a wooded dell. The eager searclier finds her rarest blossoms. And for his labor is rewarded well. Thy gorgeou.s sunsets, how can pen describe them, How paint each tint of blue, and gold, and grey? How catch the glimmer of the golden shadows As fades from sight each glistening, lingering ray. Viewed from thy hilltops, the surrounding country. Touched by its gold, at twilight grows so dim I fancy that the pearly gates of Heaven Have opened wide and let earth's grandeur in. Ofttimes thy waves, swept by the winds in fury, Beat in their anger 'gainst thv rock-bouud sliore; They cannot fright, thee in their wildest tumult, But woo to slumber with their ceaseless roar. Twice hath the fiend of fire waved o'er thee His riaming sceptre with relentless hand, What e'er it touched it turned to blackened ashes And spread its ruin o'er thy peaceful land. That dreary wa.ste, now rank with vegetation, Where desolation broods above the place. Will, on removal of its forced restrictions, Bioom once again with architecmral grace. Fair Marblehead. in dreams I see thee growing. Gaining fresh vigor with each passing day, I see each blot that inars thy beauteous landscape Slowly but surely swept from earth away. We would not change th.y quaiut, old-fashioned dwellinos. Against time's ravages ntay they stand secure. Thy fathers building ever well and wisely. Firm on the rocks, made their foundations sure. Thy narrow streets we would not widen. We love to tread those siimous winding ways, Tliy verv dust beneath our feet .seems bpating Willi the brave .spirit of time-honored days. The sun that gilds each arched and gotnic struc- ture Of otlier lauds, mid far more genial climes. Sheds inelloweil lustre on thine ancient hindmaik. Those str iige reminders of "ye olden times." Famous art thou, it. legend and in story. Thy records shine with deeds of bravery bold. Performed alike upon the land and ocean. By valiant men, those worthy sires of old. Thy children, taught in youth those lessons That make of men brave patriots and true, Bear smouldering sparks of thiit heroic fire That quickened by danger, will fiame forth anew. Surely the prowess and undaunted courage That rowed an army o'er the waters cold With muffled oars, all silent in the darkness, Is not all buried in those graves of old. It is meet our nation's gallant cruiser O'er the broad seas should bear thine honored name, Fit recognition of those deeds of glory That stamp thy history with immortal fame. Long may thy colors from her standard tiying Float o'er a staunch and ever loyal crew. No spot or stain its blood red stripes defiling. Or dim its stars upon their field of blue. The crimson blood that o'er thy country's altar Flowed in deep streams and made our nation free. Bids thee guard well with ever jealous honor The priceless heritage bequeathed to thee. Thy fathers' God still reian as king above thee And guide thy people iu the paths or right Till safely gathered in that laud immortal They roam triuuiphant in those tields of light. Mrs. H. M. S. And "1 lacker" was their rallying cry. Kiilroad and bridges they repaired, And on hard bread long time they fared; And as each hardship was passed by "Hacker" would be the rallying cry. The road to Annapolis wai secured; Fatigue and hunger they endured; Yet upward went their voices high, And "liacker" was their rally cry. The "Constitution" did they save, And took her out upou the wave — Had rusty pork to grease their cracker, But still their rallying cry was "Hacker." Our far-famed capital was saved, And nobly all the "Eighth ' behaved ; They knew no fear, but onward rolled, While the cry of "Hacker" ne'ergrew old. Old "Hacker" was a familiar' name, And in the Eighth he gained a fame; For as each company went to dine, On pans and plates they'd "Hacker" chime. Aug. l.Stb, 1S61. The following is taken from the Essex Register of June 4th, 1817 : Died, at Marblehead, on Friday last, Capt. John Selman, aged 73, of apoplexy. A man of great integrity, uncommon in- dustry, and inflexible patriotism. He dis- tinguished himself early in the American Revolution, and was one of the first ad- venturers upon the ocean. Of the two schooners which first sailed for the gulf of St. Lawrence, Capt. Selman commanded the one and Capt. Broughton the other. From the beginning, after the severest losses and the greatest privations, he never had a doubt of the duty he owed his coun- try. In Marblehead he has been often one of the selectmen and a representative of the town, and he always behaved in a faithful, conscientious and disinterested manner in every trust reposed in him. In the fishery he has been active, and was well acquainted with all its concerns. In private life he had the utmost confidence and respect, and gave his presence and favor to every useful and social and relig- ious institution. He possessed a firm con- stitution of body and mind and an ability to endure the severest labors, and never desisted till the last stroke took him at once from life and usefulness. It seldom comes to our lot to speak of a more valu- able man, or more truly the opinion of all our good citizens. He has left a worthy family to feel this bereavement. The funeral procession amply proved the inter- est his fellow-citizens had in this event. A. C.
