In presenting to the members of the Union Philosophical Society this Catalogue, the committee would remark that they have endeavored to make it as complete and accurate as possible. But, after having made the best use they could of all the information which they could turn to account, it is but just to say that implicit confidence ought not to be placed in every statement. The peculiar difficulties with which such a work is necessarily attended must be their excuse for its imperfections. Errors will, doubtless, be noticed in marking the places of residence and the deaths of members; and, perhaps, some names may be omitted. But it is hoped that members will take pleasure in correcting the mis- takes and supplying the omissions of the present Catalogue, that the Society may avail itself of them in a subsequent edition. JOHN WILSON, J. W. MARSHALL, JAMES HAMILTON, J. S. BOWMAN, P. M. LEAKIN, Committee of Publication. historical Sketcl). The Union Philosophical Society of Dickinson College owes its origin to the enterprise of some students of the Institution, who felt the need of such an association to qualify themselves fully for the duties of active life. They accordingly met together, and resolved to form themselves into an association for u mutual improvement in science and literature," and appointed a committee, consisting of John Chew, Robert Smith, Thomas Peachy, and Thomas McComb, to prepare a constitution and code of laws. At a subsequent meeting, this committee presented a report, which was adopted, and the organization was fully completed on the 31st of August, 1789, by the election of proper officers. After these prelimi- nary proceedings, the exercises were commenced and conducted with great spirit and zeal; and the records of the Society show that a desire for self-improvement was the motive that actuated its founders. This they expected to obtain only by rigid discipline and untiring industry. Hence, we find no inactive member. At every meeting, each one had some duty assigned him, and seems to have taken pleasure in perform- ing it. At an early day, the nucleus of a library was formed by the purchase of books, and by donations from the members and friends of the Society. This library has gradually increased, until, at the present time, it com- prises about four thousand three hundred volumes, including nearly all the standard works in the English language. For many years, the meetings of the Society were open to all who chose to attend them ; but, subsequently, it was thought best to have them attended by members only, who were, by its laws, forbidden to disclose any of its proceedings. This rule is in force at the present time. The badge of the Society is a white rose, worn upon the left arm, and its seal is an impress of Minerva, with the motto, " sapientta omnibus praestat" In 1844, some changes were made in the organization of the Society. Prior to this time, it was composed of under-graduates of the college, graduates, and honorary members. But, in order to strengthen the bonds of union between the graduate and honorary members, and the acting Society, " to promote the interests of the latter and of Dickinson CoiJege," it was deemed advisable to divide it into two branches, the Acting and the General Union Philosophical Societies. The Acting U. P. Society is composed of under graduate members of the College ; but all " Unions" have the privilege of attending its meet- ings, which are held in its Hall, on Wednesday afternoon, weekly, during College sessions. The anniversary of the Society is celebrated on the Fourth of July in each year; on which occasion, an anniversary address and five orations are delivered by members elected by the Society. The General U. P. Society is composed, 1. Of graduate members of the Acting Union Philosophical Society of Dickinson College. 2. Of such persons as from time to time have been elected to honorary membership in the Acting Society, and of those who may hereafter be elected honorary members of the Society at its annual meetings. 3. Of such under graduates as leave the Institution without taking a full academic course, and who have received diplomas from the Acting Society, according to the provisions of its constitution. The General U. P. Society meets annually, on the day preceding the College Commencement, at nine o'clock A. M., and its public anniver- sary exercises are held on the evening of the same day, when an oration and a poem are delivered by members of the Society, elected at its last annual meeting. The Union Philosophical Society has now been in existence sixty-one years, and eight hundred and thirty regular members have enjoyed its advantages. Of the deceased, not a few proved their worth, while living, by adorning the highest stations of honor and influence in Church and State ; and, among the living, there are many names which, we are as- sured, "the world will not willingly let die." The expectations of its founders and early members have been more than realized in its past his- tory; and its present prosperous condition, though furnishing but little to narrate that would be attractive to any but a " Union," gives promise of a glorious future. " Happy is the people whose history is uninteresting." (Officers of tlje (Benttai Union JJhilosojilikal Sotietg. PRESIDENTS. 1844. Thomas Verner Moore. 1845. James Hamilton. 1846.
