RAWING defigns, making out bills of fcantling, colleding materials, and flicking up fluff, are to be charged by the carpenter in proportion to the trouble. In taking dimenfions of floors of joifl in brick build- ings add nine inches, and in (lone buildings add twelve inches to the length of the joifl more than the clear of the wall. In frame buildings meafurc to the ends of the joifl: s by jthe clear of the buildings. Of rafters, take the length from the top to the back of the cornice, if pieced out ; but if not pieced, only to the other end of the rafter. — If the laths are fupported by pieces on the wall, meafure for the width of thofe walls ; but if they are not thus fupported, then only to the clear width between the wallg. In frame buildings all the fuperficial dimenfions of the fides and ends are to be taken, the length of all collar teams are to be taken on the underfide to the out-edge of the rafter, by the fame width they are meafured and added to their dimenfions. Of partitions, add three inches to the height of the flory, for nailing, and make no dedudion for door- ways. All fhingled roofs or boarded are meafured without any ^edudliqn for windows, doors or chimnies. — For cornice^ take the longeft fillet for the length, and for mantles girt the top with the cornice and bed-mould j but for kitchen mantles, take only from the top edge of the (helfj for the girt ^Q the bottom of the rail. — ^To meafure columns pr pilalters, tc»ke the length of the (haft of pilafter or co- lumn, and of the die of the pedeftal between the mould- inp;;: by the girt, take the length of the moft projecting fiiic^t, or part of the mouldings of the bafe or capital for the length, and girt into the mouldings for the breadth, and the fame method for the bafe and cornice of the pe- deilal , alfo girt the frieze and architrave for the breadth, by the upper fillet of the architrave for the length. — Girt the cornice, and take the length of the upper fillet of that member for its dimenfions.
