As time heals wounds, so it also obscures facts. What at that time in extent was included in this purchase was indefinite, un- known, unexplored. France, then ruled by the Man of Destiny, claimed this vast area, and Eng- land, striving to solve the destiny of this man, no doubt did much to influence him to cede what might have been a new empire to the United States. Pique, jealousy, envy, hate, the fear that England might wrest it from him is the real reason Napoleon sold so vast a domain for 60,000,000 francs, about $12,000,000. To the transfer was a 13 string — a condition, that the United States pay to the citizens of the territory the claims held by them against the French Government. These claims amounted to nearly $3,750,000, and were subsequently all paid. On the 31st of October, 1803, Congress passed an act authorizing the President to take possession of the Territory. The lower portion was formerly taken December 20, 1803, and the upper portion in March, 1804. It is, of course, now known that the Louisiana Purchase included what are now the States of Louisiana, Arkansas, Missouri, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, Minnesota, Colorado, the Indian Ter- ritory, North and South Dakota, Wyoming, Mon- tana and Oklahoma. The boundary lines of the country acquired were, however, not at that time very clearly defined. The Purchase was supposed to include the entire region between the Mississippi River and the Rocky Mountains, and extending from the north of Texas to the southern boundary of British America, but afterwards territory east of the Mississippi was included, and this caused some little friction in the State of Georgia, whose area then included what is now the States of Mississippi and Alabama. That* part of IvOuisiana east of the Mississippi River was always claimed by Georgia, and some considerable spirit of contention was at hand when all of the territory claimed by Georgia west of the Chattahoochee River was ceded to the general government the same year of the lyouisiana Purchase. In this transaction Georgia lost nearly 100,000 square miles, and out of this domain were formed the States of Mississippi and Alabama, so that there is some foundation for the claim that these two last named States were part of the lyouisiana Purchase. To President Thomas Jefferson, more than any other, are we indebted for a happy conclusion of the whole matter. Aided by Monroe and Madison and Robert lyivingston, the Purchase with France had been concluded, and Jefferson's Peaceful Policy soon adjusted the rights of contending claimants. As in the Alaska purchase, so criticism was rife against the policy of the administration, and the Republican Party, whose leader Jefferson then was, was denounced very much as the present administra- tion was as to the Philippine purchase and conquest. Troubles did arise with England growing out of the Louisiana Purchase, and it was not till after the Battle of New Orleans th^t Great Britain finally abandoned all of her claims to that part of the Mississippi Territory. Jefferson lived to receive the unqualified endorsement of his countrymen, and the lyouisiana Purchase is now regarded as one of the most important acts of his eight years' presidency, as well as the wisest. Those who opposed the Alaska purchase have passed away, and with them the sentiment of adverse criticism. Modern progress has demonstrated the vast wealth of Alaska, and the man who now raises his voice against its acquisition by the United States is unknown. In fifty years who will oppose the acquisition of the Philippines? In one hundred years the United States, aided by its two billions of patriotic citi- zens, will be celebrating the centennial anniver- sary of the event with more grandeur and greater enthusiasm than it now strives to commemorate the memory of the Louisiana Purchase. 18 15he Royal Bank Ne-w York 93 NASSAU STREET NEW YORK CITY HAS EVERY FACILITY FOR. LOUIS. 18 AINT LOUIS D HE City of St. Louis has done many things to keep itself in the public mind. Its geo- graphical situation is peculiarly attractive for commerce and manufacture. Long before Chicago had assumed the dignity of a metropolis, St. Louis was the wonder of the western country, and her trade and influence were felt and respected in all the vast territory north, west, south and southwest, and this trade and this influence have never waned. Commercially, in spite of booming rivals, St. Louis has steadily increased, and in its reputation for solidity and integrity, as well as enterprise and beauty, it has few equals — no superiors. In 1764, the site of what is now St. Louis, was a trading post established by Pierre La Clede Le- quest, and assisted by Auguste Chouteau, a small You Want a TYPEWRITER of Some Kind! These men and their followers were mainly iPrench Catholics, and until 1771 French manners and sentiments prevailed. These in time gave place to English customs, but the influence of Catholicism has never waned, and is to-day the most potent factor in the religious and political life of St. Louis. For nearly thirty years the Spaniards occupied and ruled the place, and in 1780, May 25, the Indians attacked the town, burned the buildings and killed the citizens. In 1800 Spanish rule ceased and the French again became the dominant power. In 1803 France ceded all of her right, title and inter- est to the United States. In sixty years the popu- lation was less than 6,000, but from 1830, hairing the period of the Civil War, the growth and pros- perity of the city have been steady and rapid. In 1849 fire destroyed most of its business blocks and public buildings, but Phcenix-like, it rose from its ashes more splendid than before, and today its commercial magnitude places St. Louis in the highest niche among the great cities of the West. Geographically, the city occupies a position on the west bank of the Mississippi River, twenty miles from its confluence with the Missouri River, 21 BROKERAGE CO. 302 CENTURY BUILDING NINTH AND OLIVE STREETS Bell, Main 371 A Klnloch, B 1730 \^ Do You Want An Hotel? In area it occupies about seventy square miles. It has twenty miles of river front and its greatest width is about seven miles. Thirty-one steam railroads enter the city, and 250 trains daily depart from the grand Union Station. It is connected with Illinois by the Eads Bridge and the Merchants Bridge. It is 192 feet above the water, and its foundations rest on solid rock nearly one hundred feet below the bottom of the river. Six years were occupied in its building and nearly ten million dollars have been used to pay for the work. ,The Merchants Bridge was commenced in 1889, and was opened for traffic in May 1890. In its wholesale grocery trade it is ahead of all other inland cities. St. Louis beer is- shipped to all parts of the world, and the best beer made in the United States is brewed here. The stock yards cover a space of nearly a mile square, and the mule market is one of the wonders of the world. More mules are sold annually in St. Louis than in all markets of the country. THE WORLD'S FAIR D HE Centennial Exposition held in Philadel- phia during the summer of 1876 marked the completion of the 100th year of the existence of this Government. Perhaps the most wonderful thing exhibited at that Fair was the Printing Press. In the Chicago World's Fair, seventeen years later, the most won- derful thing was the Telephone. On both occasions the wise man said that human ingenuity had reached its limit, and future World's Fairs will be lacking in practical inventive novelties. What wonder, then, will most astonish the thirty million visitors to the great St. Louis World's Fair. Will it be a perfect Baby Incubator, a perfect Type Set- ting Machine, or a perfect Airship? Perhaps none af these. Will it be an exhibition of Marconi's wireless method of transmitting messages, or will it be a telescope so powerful as to enable us to dis- cern the spires that adorn the public buildings of Mars? Whatever be the Wonder, be assured there is one, and may be several, and these will, more than ^. 31 32 anything else, help the beholder to retain a mem- ory of the great St. Louis World's Fair. On the extreme western limits of the city, adjoining Forest Park, are the Fair Grounds, riiey comprise 1,240 acres. Fifty million dollars have been spent in beauti- fying the grounds and in erecting the palace-like buildings for the exhibits. In its aggregate it is :he grandest and greatest in magnitude of any Exposition ever planned by man. Its attractions md wonders in part, may be summed up as follows: Forty-four States and Territories appropriated $5,812,000. [Jnited States Government, total appropriation, $6,473,000. TERMINAL RAILROAD ASSOCIATION. This is a combination of business men of St. Louis, )rganized to provide terminal facilities on the east side of he river; the Union Railway Transit Company was organ- zed to provide freight terminals on the St. Louis side, and mother company was organized and called the Union Depot Jompany of St. Louis, to provide passenger terminals. In, .889 all these were merged into the Terminal Railroad Association of St. Louis, the present company. This company grew and its business became more exten- sive year by year until it reached its present large propor- 161 3 ^ o H gg 162 tions. In September, 1894, the present big Union Station was opened. It is by far the largest raih'oad station in the conntry for the handling of through passenger traffic. To handle the expected World's Fair traffic it was de- cided to abandon the old tunnel and to construct a loop from the Eads Bridge south above the levee. With this improve- ment passenger traffic is greatly facilitated, for the tunnel has' been turned over to freight transportation. At the end of the loop near Washington Avenue a handsome and com- mo.dious station has been built, though all trains will as usual make the Union Station the St. Louis terminal. W. S. McChesney, Jr., is president and general man- ager of the Association, and Julius S. Walsh is chairman of the Board. PLACES OF AMUSEMENT. The most noted suburb adjacent to the city is East St. Louis. Its population is nearly 60,000. In it are located the large packing houses of Swift & Co., Armour & Co., and other large packing corporations. There is also located within its limits the famous St. Louis Mule Market and the Union Stock Yards. A few years ago East St. Louis was nothing more than a mud hole but modern enterprises have elevated it to the position of a high and dry city, and its street level is now thirty-seven feet above the normal water mark of the Mississippi River. On Cahokia Creek, in East St. Louis, is located the most remarkable and most wonderful tomb or pyramid in the world. It is nearly as large as the largest pyramid of Egypt and ever si ace the discovery of the country has been an object of wonder to the tourist. Within its confines are subterranean passages divided into vaults and cells in which lie buried the remains of prehistoric races. When these people lived is only conjecture, but they have left monuments which leave no doubt in the mind of the student that they were of a race of intellectual greatness and artistic superiority. East St. Louis may be reached by trolley car, and the visitor will find much to interest him. Ten miles south of St. Louis is the historic spot known as Jefferson Barracks. During the Great Rebellion the North and South occupied at different times this famous place, and among some of the distinguished officers who were seen within its confines may be named Gen. Robert E. Lee, Gen. Winfield Scott Hancock, Gen. Albert Sidney Johnson, Gen. Jubal Early, and that immortal hero of an hundred battles. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant. The scenery about the Barracks is beautiful, the river flows majestically at the foot of the bluff of the reservation, and here one can stand on a clear day and command for miles and miles a view of the mighty Mississippi as it flows to the ocean. Near the reservation is the National Ceme- tery, in which lie buried 8,000 heroes of the Civil War. Along the line of the 'Frisco Railroad and on the Subur- ban Trolley Line are such beautiful and attractive suburbs as Maplewood, Meramec Highlands and Frazier Park. Creve Ca?ur Lake is also considered one of the most famous suburban places of St. Louis. The Lake affords splendid fishing and boating, and in the winter skating is one of the popular amusements. A theatrical company has its head- quarters on the borders of the Lake, and has provided the visitors with entertainment for the summer. It may be reached by trolley or steam cars. Fern Glen is a picnic ground of great renown, about twelve miles southwest of the city on the Missouri Pacific Railway. An immense pile of earth, that has inspired speculative minds to wonder by whom it was constructed, is known as Monk's Mound, said to be the largest Indian mound in the United States. This mound is 1,080 feet long and 6,750 feet wide, and is supposed to contain the remains of the earlier inhabitants of our country. The oldest French village in the upper Mississippi val- ley is Cahokia, Illinois. It contains many quaint houses, and one of its objects of interest is a church edifice erected 162 years ago. Many of the houses in the town were built of walnut slabs, and they still defy the effects of time and pre- 179 r^ 180 sent a most pleasing as well as suggest an expensive exterior. To reach Cahokia, cross the river on the Carondelet ferry at the foot of Davis Street, and drive about four miles to the east. Another little village which attracts numbers of visitors is Florissant. It is on a branch of the Suburban Railroad in St. Louis County. Its houses are of the old French style of architecture. Most of them were erected long before St. Louis was founded. A suburb and point of interest is Kaskaskia, Illinois. This place may be reached by a pleasant steamboat ride on the river, and its appearance as well as historic associations suggest many things to the mind of the student. Kaskaskia was the first capital of the State of Illinois; now, however, it is only a fishing village. Near Kaskaskia is St. Genevieve, said to be the oldest town in the State of Missouri. - A few miles down the river is the city of St. Charles, an attractive and interesting place which may be reached either by steamer or by trolley cars recently put in operation.
