Durham, Sec'y. Topeka, Kan., Oct. 1, 1888. £* ■ >• TV ^ Indiana Veteran A:: - //&*■ fe .-, f Kansas: In obedience to instructions of the Asso- ciation at their last meeting, held at Em- poria Oct. 7th, 1S8S, I have prepared and published the Roster of Indiana Soldiers resident of Kansas. The records of the Adjutant General's office have furnished the greater part of the names. Registry books of reunions have also been searched and names and addresses have been learned from individuals and by correspondence. Names have been compared with the muster rolls in the report of Adjutant Terrell of Indiana to avoid errors, and thus hundreds of corrections have been made. Still there are doubtless many mistakes, but in the main it is correct. As to the addresses, however, they cannot be altogether relied on, for the soldier, like a bird, does not always remain where first he settles. The addresses published if not now correct will give a clue to trace from and may thus lead to the present adcress. The work has been prepared with care, and the arrangement is in the most approved le, the Regiments being placed in numerical and the names oi the men in alphabetical order, giving company and rank if known. The work of preparing this Roster has been a iabor of love, and it is ihe desire of the author that the work may prove inter- esting and useful and go far towards per- fecting the spirit of Fraternity, Charity and Loyalty which should ever be found to between those who together fought and con- quered the element of disunion. Dear to each patriot's heart should be the name and fame of every other patriot, and especially dear those of our own glorious old si Indian There having been no fund provided for publication, there appeared no other have the Roster printed, than for the Secre- tary to become personally responsible, and to advance a large part of the pay, and for his remuneration to look to the appreciation of his comrades of the association, in buying a sufficient number of the books to pay the >f the publication. The number of Rosters printed being limited, it is hoped that all desiring trill \ copies at once, before the edition is exhausted. Respectfully submitted, T. \Y. Durham, Secret:. Muster Roll Indiana Veterans in Kansas. Note — The order of arrangement is : First, by regiments ; Indiana having furn- ished five regiments for the Mexican war, the number of the first regiment foi the war of 1861 was the sixth ; the regiments inclu- ding infantry, cavalry and heavy artillery were numbered consecutively Hum sIa. to one hundred and fifty-six. There were thirteen regiments o r a and one of heavy artillery; regiment twenty- one was the first heavy artillery. The 1st cavalry was the 28th, 2d 3d 4th 5 th 6th 7th 8th 9 th 10th nth 1 2th 13th 41st. 45 th. 77th. 90th. 71st. 119th. 59th. I2ISt. 125th. I26th. I27th. I3ISt. The remaining regiments were infantry. The light artillery were designated as bat teries by numbers from one to twenty-eig'u; — the last number being coloicd. Second, names are placed in alphabetic! order — first, name ; second, rank ; third, company letter; fourth, postoffice address- - all postoffices ; unless otherwise noted, being in Kansas. Where no rank is given it will be under- stood that the soldier was a private or that rank was unknown. The usual military abbreviations have been used for rank, and also s for sergeant, c for corporal, m for musician. SIXTH INFANTRY — 3 MONTHS AND 3 YEARS. Cols. T. T. Crittenden, P. P. Baldwin, H. The Governors of Ohio, Indiana, Illinois. Iowa and Wisconsin having offered to raise for the service of the General Government a force of volunteers to serve for ioo days, Governor Morton on the 23d of April, 1864, issued his call for Indiana's proportion ol that force. The troops thus raised were tff perform such military services as might be required of them in any state, and were to be armed, subsisted, clothed and paid by the United States, but were not to receive any bounty. These troops were designed to aid in mak- ing the campaign of 1864 successful and decisive, by relieving a large number o veterans from garrison and guard duty, and allow them to join their companions in arms, then about entering upon one of the v active and important campaigns of the war. Their places were filled by the ioo days men as fast as the latter could be organized into regiments and sent forward from the camps of rendezvous. The organizations from Indiana consisted of eight regiments, numbered consecutively from the I32d to the 139th inclusive. ONE HUNDRED AND THIRTY SECOND INFAN- TRY, ONE HUNDRED DAYS REGIMENT. Col.
