' 7 '( :l ■•(id:- PREFACE The author having recently revised his School Histo- ry of the United States, herewith presents a series of Questions adapted to the work, in its present improv- ed form. This he has done from two considerations, 1. That the method of teaching by means of written, or printed Questions, greatly diminishes the labor of the teacher, Avhile it serves as a guide and assistant to the pupil; and, 2. that the ' Questions and Supplement to Goodrich's History,' prepared by the late Rev. Joseph Emerson, are of no further use — his ' Supplement' being superseded by an enlargement of the text — and his ' Ques- tions,' by reason of various alterations and additions to the History, being no longer adapted to the work. The plan adopted in the present system is extremely simple. The Questions are distributed into Periods and Sections, corresponding to the periods and sections of the History. Those questions which answer to the smaller type are designated by the character §. According to this plan, the sections may easily be divided into lessons of convenient length, and the pupil may go through the His- tory, at first attending only to the larger type; and, on a second course, may attend to the smaller type, and the Miscellaneous Questions. These latter Questions are, in each case, framed upon the Period immediately preceding. They are, in some •ases, only a repetition of the questions, which the pupil lias answered, while studying the text; but in a varied and irregular form. Other and more general questions, however, are interspersed, designed to exercise the skill and judgment of the pupil, and to test the fidelity, with which he has attended to the study of the History. In the sequel, will be found a Plan for a General Re- view of the History, which the Author believes, experi- ence will pronounce to be peculiarly valuable, for the purpose for what it is designed. It admits of being limit- ed to the prominent events, &c. of the History, or extend- ed to greater particularity, according to the age, skill, and taste of the pupil. Similar tables may be constructed in relation to Arts and Manufactures — Trade and Commerce — Colleges, &c. The necessary explanations for reducing the Plan ot Review, here alluded to, to practice, will be found to precede the Outline Tables. QUESTIONS, &c, INTRODUCTION. 1.
