NEW YORK, AND 211 & 213 WABASH AVENUE, CHIC>' -^ 7^^ *'(9/<3f Vienna^'' of the Midway Plaisance— that enlarged Ameri- ; can edition of the Nishni-Novgorod Fair — has existed in the 17th » and i8th century much as it presents itself here. It shows a large \^^^ market place and a quadrangle of houses, picturesque with gables, M^'^\ many shaped roofs and towers. There is no attempt at ostentatious show, but the whole tells of the patriarchal, domestic spirit, the well grooved mode of life of its denizens, narrow in their ways and views, I as are the diminutive windows out of which they espy their neighbors' ' doings. You enter by the City Gate, Old Vienna was well protected, en- circled by walls and bastions. The belated citizen could gain entrance only after being subjected to a tedious examination by the corporal of the watch. The City Hall first attracts our attention. Back of its colonnade is housed a collection of antique portraits painted in Egypt by Greeks more than 2,000 years ago. The '•'• House of the Golden Cup " stood on tlie ^'•High Market ^'''^ as it is seen here. It was the property of the jeweler Johannes Markx, the fame of whose wares had penetrated far beyond Vienna The arched way to the left '-'-Zum hochsten Heurigen " (This year's best) leads to the beer garden and restaurant of Mr. Seidl, a typical Viennese boniface. To the right of the City Hall a mural Painting indicates the '•^ House of Mary.'' ^ Next comes Job. Roetzer's hotel and restaurant "CV/y of Vienna^''^ and, terminating this side of the quadrangle, two cozy wine rooms with their cozy barmaids invite the weary stranger to tarry, chat of Vienna or whatnot and taste the excellent wines of Austria and Bohemia. Now cafes alternate with bakeries, wiih con- fectionery, fancy goods and souvenir stores, till we reach the Church. Even in this sanctuary the lower story is surrendered to trade, and the barmaid, ever present in Viennese life, has posted herself between our salvation-seeking photographer and the "golden gates." At the ^^Salvator^"*^ the lover of a glass of beer, good in quality and size, will find his heart's content. In the^avilion opposite a superlative Hungarian orchestra, who play during forenoon and noon hours, seem to captivate the American taste in particular. Little less do the pair of youthful cymbal artists, seated under a tent in the eastern court. Their- hands dance, hop and flirt with the most gracious ease over tlfis weird instrument, and it you feel tempted to possess one of their photographs, these same childish hands will inscribe on it the name and vocation of their charming owners. But see — or hear — Old Vienna, when Ziehrer and his regimental band of sixty artists strike off their soft, melodious tunes. The evening or many evenings you have spent there will prove the most cherished souvenirs you carry away from the great exhibition. Hear the thunderous applause, see the young ladies clap their hands man-fashion, and you know Ziehrer's music has touched a thousand hearts with a thousand reminders of dear old home.
