The Chrono- logical Table is absolutely reliable, records the events in their order, and mentions the men and women whose deeds have in this way written an indelible page into the history of the Jews of America. Many other phases of this great w^ork are not recorded here, not because they are unknow^n, but because the details have not yet reached me. This is an explanation of the omissions of many facts and portraits w^hich are not included in this book. This is not a history, but only a record of the facts that have come under my personal know^ledge and in w^hich I had the honor to participate. Sufficient is recorded here, however, to show that Jewry of Amer- ica has not only responded to every appeal for generous contributions of money, but has nobly responded to all the calls made by the United States Government at this critical time. A few facts are mentioned which show that not only have the Jews of America given gener- ously of their money, but that they have loyally and without stint offered their all, even their lives in devoted self-sacrifice. Through this great w^ork — Jew^ish War Relief — a world-w^ide philanthropy, American Jewry is now united as never before. I ven- ture to hope that this unity brought about at the call of duty will in time embrace all Jewish activities. New York, October, 1918. God of mercy and compassion. Unto Thee we lift up our eyes, while our hearts are torn with grief and sorrow^. We beseech Thee, look down from Thy Holy Habitation, from High Heaven. How dread and fearful the sight! Myriads of Thy children, created in Thy image, are contending on fields of battle, are filled with savage hate. In furious rage they slay and destroy one another with every implement of destruction. Rivers of blood deluge the face of Thy earth. We pray Thee, O Lord, have pity on the vvrretched children of men; remove evil pride and the spirit of tyranny from the hearts of their sovereigns and princes into whose hands their lot is entrusted; teach the rulers under- standing that they may recognize and know, that not the sword should control the affairs of States but only Justice and Righteousness. King over all, we pray Thee, in Thy great mercy make an end of the slaughter and massacre, and vouchsafe unto mankind the happy time foretold by Thy Prophets, saying, "No nation shall lift the sword against another nation and they shall not any longer learn war." May the eyes of all the children of men be opened that they may see that they are all brethren, children of one Father; may they dwell on earth in love and brotherliness, in peace and in harmony; may they serve Thee with a sincere heart and may the Redeemer come to Zion. JEWISH WAR RELIEF WORK IN AMERICA TEMPLE EMANU-EL, NEW YORK CITY Tne First Official War Relief Appeal Aadressea to American Jewr3>, October, 1914, 03) tne Central Relief Committee To the Jews of America : Our brethren are dying. Widows and orphans are wandering, homeless, naked and hungry. Women, old and young, with their little ones, and the aged find no refuge. In every land that we or our fathers once called home, bloody war w^ith all its unspeakable horrors stalks abroad; thousands of villages have been ravaged and great cities laid w^aste. Mourning, they lift up their eyes, whence shall come their help! More than half of the Jews of the world are overwhelmed in the present conflict. The condition of our brethren in Palestine, also, is past description. Its institutions can no longer be supported by the generosity of our brethren in Eu- rope, as to-day the Jew^s of Europe are themselves sore beset. Another most serious condition brought about by the war must not be over- looked. Thousands among us have regularly sent money to our families and friends "at home" to help our less fortunate kinsmen. All the world is looking to us for aid and direction. We will surely not be deaf to their prayers. We have therefore formed in New York a committee of representative rabbis and laymen to help our co-religionists in Europe and Palestine. This committee is extending its organization throughout the United States and appeals to you to join it. It asks you either to call a meeting in your syna- gogue, or to join w^ith others to call a meeting in your city, at which contributions shall be collected, local officers elected and representatives chosen to be added to our Central Committee in New York. We want at least tw^o representatives in each city of the United States to be in constant communication with us, in order to organize the Jews of America into one compact body, ready and w^illing to raise a large RELIEF FUND FOR JEWS SUFFERING THROUGH THE WAR REMEMBER — This w^ar has ruined hundreds of thousands of our brethren. REMEMBER — No one can tell, today, whether his own relatives are not refugees far from their own home. REMEMBER — That the assistance of this Committee may save the lives of those w^ho are near and dear to you. You cannot know w^here your own father or mother, sister or brother is. Your help through us, may help them. AND REMEMBER — That this w^ar w^ill cause an amount of suffering un- precedented in history. Ways and means must be devised to raise an enormous amount of money at once, and to continue the effort throughout the weeks and months, aye, possibly even through the next few years to come! This Committee is preparing plans w^hich w^ill enable every one to help daily, weekly and monthly, without taxing the resources of any one beyond his means. 8 JEWISH WA R RELIEF WORK IN AMERICA Join us at once. Send in your name and the names of those associated with you to the secretary of the committee. The Union of Orthodox Jew^ish Congrega- tions of America, The Agudas Harabonim, The Mizrachi and the Central Com- mittee of Palestine Institutions are all represented on this committee. A large number of collections have already been made in response to their appeals. All amounts should be remitted as soon as possible to the financial secretary of this committee; and checks draw^n made payable to the order of the treasurer. Five thousand dollars has been sent to a committee of Palestinian Jews, comprising Guedalia N. Broder, Isaac Chagis, Joseph Eliaschar, Behr Epstein, Saul Isaac Freund, Dr. Isaac Levy, Solomon Perlman, Alter Rivlin, Dr. Arthur Ruppin, Solomon Rubin, Wolf Schocher, Salmon Solovi^eitchik, Aaron Vallero, David Yellin. Five thousand dollars has been sent to the Israelitische Alliance, Vienna, for the relief of Galician Jew^s and one thousand dollars for the Yeshibath. In securing the services of Mr. Harry Fischel as Treasurer, the Committee has obtained the advantage of his wide acquaintance throughout the United States. All moneys received by him are deposited in The Guaranty Trust Company of America. Arrangements will be made through the accredited representatives of the U. S. Government to forw^ard money to our stricken brethren, as soon as w^e can get in touch "with responsible people in all the war zones, who will distribute it without favor for the immediate relief of the Jew^ish vs^idow^s and orphans, sick and w^ounded, aged and infirm, in short, to all those w^ho will die of hunger and cold, unless you promptly help. No crown adorns the head of him, who in the hearts of his brethren and the hearts of all men, is crowned the king of benevolence and charity. THREESCORE years and ten are this day completed since Thou, O Lord, in Thy great mercy, did give unto Israel this great and glorious son, who hath become the glory of Jeshurun, he who is known among men by the hon- ored name of JACOB H. SCHIFF. WITHOUT peer in kindliness of heart and nobility of spirit, faith hath ever been the girdle of his loins and deed-of-loving-kindness the longings of his soul. No one can count the eyes whence he has wiped the tears, nor can reckon the feeble hands that he hath upborne, nor the strength that he has brought to the countless ones that were w^eary. Who shall number the Houses of Worship and of Learning, of Mercy and Benevolence that he has upheld, and in whose behalf he hath lavishly poured forth his wealth, to help those who were unhappy, dow^n-trodden and wretched? So has he aided them — all those that needed spiritual comfort or material aid. Thus has he brought honor and glory upon his people and sanctified the name of Israel in the eyes of all the inhabitants of the earth. WE offer our thanks to Thee, O Lord our God, that Thou hast given to thy people Israel, and to all mankind, this man so exalted and so uplifted. From the depths of our hearts ■we pray unto Thee, O Lord, to shower the abun- dance of Thy blessings upon JACOB H. SCHIFF in the time to come even as Thou hast blessed him until this day. Account to him his good deeds and let the fruit of his hands reward him; prolong his life and grant him many years of happiness and peace. May he yet behold the redemption of his people and may consolation come unto Zion, unto Israel and all his brethren. And may this be Thy Divine will, and let us say. Amen. This special assembly of representatives gathered from all parts of the United States desire formally to put upon record their warm appreciation of the Joint Distribution Com- mittee and also to record their entire confidence in the Joint Distribution Committee and the opinion that the appropriations that have been made of this immense sum in all the war zones and in Palestine, have been made by the Joint Distribution Committee with the best foresight and judgment and consideration of the whole sad situation under which our brethren are laboring, as is humanly possible. Be it therefore resolved that the delegates assembled at this Special Assembly, held in New York City on October 28, 1917, representing the contributors to the American Funds' for Jewish War Sufferers, gathered together from all parts of the United States and repre- senting; all sections of Jewry, most gratefully and cordially endorse the past work of the Joint Distribution Committee. Henry and Mrs. Morgenthau, New York, a Reception and Testimonial was tendered the Hon. Otis A. and Mrs. Glazebrook, by the Jews of America. The Testimonial is inscribed as follow^s: PRESENTED TO HON. OTIS A. AND MRS. GLAZEBROOK BY MEMBERS OF THE JOINT DISTRIBUTION COMMITTEE OF THE AMERICAN FUNDS FOR JEWISH WAR SUFFERERS THE AMERICAN JEWISH RELIEF COMMITTEE THE CENTRAL JEWISH RELIEF COMMITTEE THE JEWISH PEOPLE'S RELIEF COMMITTEE THE PROVISIONAL ZIONIST EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE THE JEWISH WOMEN'S PROCLAMATION COMMITTEE REPRESENTING THE JEWS IN AMERICA AT A RECEPTION AT THE RESIDENCE OF HON. HENRY AND MRS. MORGEN- THAU, IN GRATEFUL RECOGNITION OF THE SELF-SACRIFICE AND DEVOTION OF DR. OTIS A. AND MRS. GLAZEBROOK, BY WHICH THE FUNDS SENT FROM AMERICA FOR THE RELIEF OF THE JEWS IN PALESTINE WERE MOST EQUITABLY AND WISELY DISTRIBUTED AND OUR CO-RELIGIONISTS THROUGHOUT THE HOLY LAND RECEIVED MUCH AID AND COMFORT DURING ALL THE TIME THAT DR. GLAZEBROOK WAS U. S. CONSUL AT JERUSALEM. NEW YORK January 31, 1918, KTatKan Straus Celebrates His Se\)entietn Birtnaa^) An Open Letter Addressed to Hon. Nathan Straus. D4ar Mr. Straus: The Central Committee for the Relief of Jews Suffering Through the War feels it its duty and priv- ilege to express to you, your beloved wife and family, its warmest appreciation of the Divine Mercy that has spared you to your people till this day upon which you reach the patriarchal age of three score years and ten. Filled as your life has been by deeds of benevolence; self-sacrifice; rich in acts of loving kindness for your fellow-men; actuated solely by the desire to ameliorate the lot of those who needed your aid; you have become remarkable even among the greatest of philanthropists for your generosity, self-denial and all-embracing benefactions. This Committee may not go outside of its own sphere of activity, to record your devotion to your high ideals. It is therefore our privilege only to pay tribute to you for the generous aid, whole-hearted support and valuable cooperation, both as a contributor to our funds, and as an example to others to contribute, for the relief of our brethren in the war zones and in Palestine. In your honor we have inaugurated a WEEK OF MERCY from January 2 7 to February 3. The date of the commencement of this WEEK OF MERCY recalls this epoch-marking proclamation of that date in the year 1916, the day upon which our nation was invited to give of its wealth, and its sym- pathy to our brethren in the war zones by the wise, benevolent, honored President of the United States. Woodrow Wilson thus endorsed our views when this Committee led the way in America, in collecting funds from Jews with the special aim of relieving the distress of the Jews, caused by the Vk^ar. Their distress was and is, we still regret to have to assert, greater than that of all those who have suffered through the war. They suffer as Jews, from all the horrors of war, besides suffering through prejudice, bigotry, and ignorant fanaticism. The Central Committee has been, is doing, and will continue to do, its share to aid them and it is therefore of happy augury that your Seventieth Anniversary falls during the week, we have brought to the attention of the Jews of America, by reason of it, including the anniversary of Jewish Relief Day, as proclaimed by President Wilson. We expect that the Jews of America will fittingly and generously respond to our appeal for funds in your honor. May your life be prolonged. May your health and happiness be complete. May the shadow of sor- row be far off. And may the Almighty, in His Mercy, show His Divine Mercy to you and yours in reward for the mercy which you and they so munificently have showered upon your fellow-men. We are taking the liberty to give this letter to the press, in order that our sentiments may enjoy the widest publicity. For the Central Committee for the Relief of Jews Suffering Through the War. RABBI ISAAC ALCALAY (Chief Rabbi of Serbia) JEWISH WAR RELIEF WORK IN AMERICA 55 Gold Loving Cup Presented to tKe Honorable Julius Rosen^N?alcl, April 14, 1918 Inscription: To the Honorable Julius Rosenwald Patriotic American, Faithful Jew and Far-seeing Philanthropist From the Members of the American Jewish, the Central and the People's Relief Committees, the Joint Distribu- tion Committee and the Jew^ish Welfare Board, as a Mark of Their Love and Esteem and in Token of Their Grateful Recognition of His Beneficient Generosity and His Compelling Initiative, Which Brought to a Triumphant Issue the Project, Unique in Jewish History, of Obtaining During the Year 1917, the Unprecedented Sum of Ten Million Dollars for Jewish War Relief and for Welfare Work Among the Jew^ish Soldiers and Sailors T nird Liberty Loan Celebration Meeting PRAYER for the President, his cabinet and advisers and the thousands of men who have answered their country's call, was offered Thursday night, April 25, by the Rev. Dr. Bernard Drachman, Rabbi of the Congregation and President of the Union of Orthodox Congregations of America, at a patriotic rally arranged in celebration of Liberty Day by members and seat holders of the Synagogue. The prayer also included an appeal to purchase Liberty Bonds of the Third Loan, to which the members and seat holders already had responded to the extent of a quarter of a million dollars. Hun- dreds of persons were unable to be accommodated in the building, which was crowded to its full capacity. Subscriptions at the meeting totalled $97,000. Among the subscribers being the Agudos Harabonim, who subscribed for $2,500 w^orth of bonds. The reason for celebrating Liberty Day a day before the date set by the President, Rev. Dr. Phillip Klein, Senior Rabbi, explained in an eloquent patriotic address was because of the Jewish Sabbath falling on the day named in the President's proclamation. Judge Otto A. Rosalsky in a stirring address asked each present to at least double the amount of his previous subscription, thus raising the total to half a million from the Synagogue. Albert Herskovitz heads the list as the largest individual subscriber, with $50,000. Following Judge Rosalsky's address, Morris Engelman, in charge of the arrangements, had sixty girls pass through the congregation to aid in obtaining the subscription. Third Liberty Loan Rally at Congregation OHab Zedek, New York City, April 25, 1918. JEWISH WAR RELIEF WORK IN AMERICA 57 Hon. Samuel S. Koenig, former Secretary of State, in his address complimented the Congregation. He said that not only was it a pleasure for him to be present at the splendid patriotic rally which had gathered so large a crowd full of genuine enthusiasm, but he wished to compliment the Committee on the perfect arrangements that had been made to make the celebration a success. Evidently the Congregation was not only 100% Con- gregation, but as was proved by the fact that it had given I 24 of its children to the service of its country, it was also 100% American. This was only a sample of American Jewry and confirmed his belief, w^hen the test comes, our Jew^ish people throughout the country w^ill be found with the Government "doing their bit." Other speakers included Moritz Neuman, President of the Congregation, N. H. Borenstein, Vice-President, and Congressman Isaac Siegel. The Rev. Josef Rosenblatt, cantor, and his choir sang "The Star-Spangled Banner" and "America." FEDERAL RESERVE BANK OF NEW YORK PUBLICAN COUNTY CON 0*ar Ur.. SPECIAL PRAYER FOR THE PRESIDENT AND THE GOVERNMENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA REV. DR. BERNARD DRACHMAN President Union Orthodox JeiOish Congregations of An LORD! God of mercy and compassion. Unto Thee we lift our eyes while our hearts are filled with con- tending emotions. We are living in a time of awful sorrow but also of solemn duty and stern resolution. MANY thousands of our brethren and sons have answered our coun- try's call and now stand shoulder to shoulder with the millions of our Na- tion and her Allies in defense of the right Thou hast given to all living flesh to live secure from oppression, safe from wrong doers, free to obey Thy Divine will. THY prophets have promised that the time shall come, when the senseless swords of war shall be beaten into fruit- ful ploughshares of peace. O God, grant that this day may soon dawn upon Thine earth that now welters in rivers of blood and grant O God, that this day shall see freedom once more rise erect from the ashes of dust created by the clouds of ignorance, prejudice and pride of wilful men, who deny in their arrogance Thy Supreme Law of Justice. I HIS day has been set by our hon-. ored President as the day upon which all the citizens of our country shall gather themselves together in their might and by mutual council and self- sacrifice pledge themselves again and their worldly possessions, in support of the finances of our country. We pledge ourselves to give hearty response to the demand that our citizens shall con- tribute their full quota to the Third Liberty Loan of the United States of America and so give tangible proof of our fealty and faith in the ideals of our Nation. \Y7E beseech Thee, O Father, vouch- safe Thy mercy unto all Thy chil- dren. And especially do we pray that Thy loving care may watch over the President of the United States, his Cabinet and Advisors and all those who are fighting Thy holy cause, so that they may so direct the destinies of our nation that victory may crown our arms and peace with honor prevail.
