Spottiswoode, New- Street- Square* ■ » To Davies Gilbert, Esq. an independent Senator, an accomplished Scholar, and, a liberal Promoter of Classical Studies, this Work, originally planned by himself, is respectfully inscribed by his humble Servant, John Carey. - ;v ADVERTISEMENT. The rapid sale of my " Latin Terminations" (or " Clue far young Latinists") has inspired me with a hope that this little volume of Greek Terminations, compiled on a similar plan, will experience an equally favorable reception from the public, as offering useful aid to the young student in surmounting the difficulties which the Greek language presents to him in the vast variety of its inflexions, particularly in the Dialects and Poetic Licences. While he enjoys the expected benefit, I wish him to remember, that, to Davies Gilbert, Esq. M.P. he stands, in great measure, indebted for it ; that gentleman having (as in the case of the " Latin Terminations") originally suggested the idea, and, by a spontaneous act of munifi- cence, promoted its execution. — At his express desire, I undertook the compilation, for the use of his son, Mr. John Davies Gilbert, a promising youth, now in his tenth year, who, having already made a creditable profi- ciency in the Latin language, intends soon to enter on the study of the Greek. The general plan of the work requires no explanation; a single glance at any one page being sufficient to show its nature and use. A few particulars, however, it may be proper to notice, VI ADVERTISEMENT. 1 . As the declensions have been differently distributed and numbered by different grammarians, and I wished to avoid clashing with any of the existing grammars, I have, therefore, divided the nouns into three " classes" corresponding with the first three Latin declensions — a distribution readily understood, and easily remem- bered ; the first class comprising the parisyllabics in -a, -ac, -yj, -ij£ (Mwcra, 4>jAja, Ta/juac, Tj/j^, TsAwvyjf, as, in Latin, Musa, JEneas, Nymphe, Anchises) — the second being confined to the parisyllabics in -©g and -ov (Aoyoc, AvAov,* as, in Latin, Dominus, Hegnura, Faphos, Barbiton) — the third embracing all the imparisyllabics, of whatever termination, forming the genitive in -o£, or Attic -«£, (as, in Latin, all those forming the genitive in -IS.) 2. With respect to the Dialects — Without descending to un-important subdivisions, I have contented myself with that general division of the language into Common, Attic, Ionic, Doric, and Poetic, which is sufficiently sanctioned by the authority of Busbey and Maittaire ; to the latter of whom I am bound to acknowledge my obligations ; having minutely searched his " Greek Dialects," page by page, and freely borrowed from him whatever suited my purpose ; insomuch that his work does not (I think) contain any one dialectic form of termination worthy of notice, which I have not included in this little volume. 3. As to the Accents — Although they might w T ell be dispensed with in a work confined to terminations, I have thought right to retain the Circumflex, because (as * The Attic -ws and -ov falling under the head Gi Dialects, Verbal Augments. vii a visible mark, independent of pronunciation) it may sometimes usefully serve to distinguish tenses and voices, or verbs from nouns, as TWoj/xj aorist, from Tutto^j future — Tu7nji passive, from Tuttvj active — <£jAc7 indica- tive, from <£*A=f imperative — 4>jAo7 verb, from 4>jAo/, noun substantive, &c. To conclude — As this is, I believe, (with the excep- tion of my " Latin Terminations") the first publication of the kind hitherto attempted, I hope the candid reader will indulgently pardon any imperfections which he may discover in it: and, even if found less perfect than might be wished, I flatter myself that it will nevertheless prove eminently serviceable to the youthful student. John Carey. West Square, October -20, 1821. P. S. Having some vacant space here remaining, I avail myself of it, to furnish the young Grecist with a few general hints respecting the Augments of Verbs — referring him to his Grammar and Lexicon for more minute particularities, exceptions, and anomalies.
