The Alumni ot Ilobart College hereby constitute themselves an Association to be known by the name of "Associate Alumni of Ilobart College." 2. The object of this Association is declared to be to promote in every proper way the interests of the College, and strengthen the tie of confraternity. 3. In addition to the actual Alumni of this College, all persons who have been members of the Iloiise of Convocation, and all members of the Faculty of the College, shall be deemed members of this Associa- tion. And all who shall have received honorary or ad euiidem degrees at this College, and all Alumni of other Colleges, who have received degrees in course at this College, shall be eligible thereto. 4. The officers of this Association shall consist of a President, Vice-President, Secretary, Recording Secretary, Treasurer, and an Executive Committee. 5. This Association shall meet annually, on the day preceding the Commencement. Special meetings may be called by the Executive Committee. ^ 6. By-Laws and Regulations may be made at any regular meeting, by a vote of the members present. 7. Any proposition to alter or amend this Constitution must be made at an annual meeting, and lie over one year, and have the assent of two-thirds of the members present at the tinal vote. - cLssoclale jllumni, BY-LA\A.^S. ADOPTED JUNE ;3(), 1859, AS AMENDED. ARTICLE I. Of the Time of Meeting and Oedee of Business. Section 1. A meeting of the Associate Alumni shall be held at 3 ' o'clock p. M., of the day before the College Commencement in each^ year. Sec. 2. There shall be two Standing Committees (the first to con- sist of five persons, tlie second of three persons), to be appointed by the President, which shall be designated as follows : 1. A Committee on Deceased Members. 2. A Committee on the Condition and Prospects o; the College. Skc. 3. The order of business at each regular meeting shall be as follows : 1. The Secretary shall ascertain the names of the members present, by calling the Roll, or otherwise. 2. Reading of the minutes of the last meeting. 3. The Treasurer's Report, which is to be refei'red to an Auditing Committee, consisting of two members, to be appointed by the Presi- dent. 4. Report of the Executive Committee. 5. Report of the Standing Committees, in the order in which they are named in Section 2. 6. Reports of Special Committees previously appointed. 7. Appointment of Standing and Special Comniittees. 8. Miscellaneous Business. 9. Election of Officers, Executive Committee, Orator and Substi- tute. Sec. 4. The list of Officers, Executive Committee, and Standing Committees, shall be printed in tabular form, and prefixed to the printed proceedings of the Association for each year. Sec 5. In case of the absence of any officer from a meeting, his place shall be filled pru tempore by the Association, on the nomination . of any member. ARTICLE II. Of Officees, &c. Section 1. The Executive Committee shall consist of seven mem- bers, four of whom sliall be the President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Treasurer of tlie Association. Sobarf College. Sec. 2. The Executive Committee shall, thvoug'h the Chairman, report at each meeting-, and sliall make such suggestions and rec- ommendations as tiaey shall deem appropriate. Sec. 3. It sliall be the ving provisions, viz.: " From and after the second stated meeting ot the boai'd of trustees appointed to be held in eighteen hundred and seventy-four, the said board shall consist ot the president of the college, ex-officio, the liishop of that diocese of the Protestant Episcopal Ciiurch which includes the college within its boundaries, ex otficio, and twenty others. At the tirst meeting of the board of trustees held after the passage of this amendment, the trustees (other than the president of the college and the liishop as aforesaid) shall divide themselves by lot into five classes of four in each class. The term of office of one of sucli classes shall expire on the day ap^sointed for the second stated A-Ssoc'lale Alumni, meeting of the board in the year eighteen hundred and seventy four , of another of such classes on the corresponding day of the year eighteen hundred and seventy-five ; of another of such classes on the corresponding day of the year eighteen hundred and seventy-six ; of another of such classes on the corresponding day of the year eighteen hundred and seventy-seven ; of another of such classes on the cor- responding day of the year eighteen hundi-ed and seventy-eight ; provided, however, that every trustee shall hold office until his suc- cessor is elected and accepts. At said first meeting aftei- tlic passage of this amendment, the said board shall determine by lot the oi-der in which the several classes shall go out of office, as aforesaid, aijd if there be more than twenty of such trustees, the excess shall be added to the class going out of office in eighteen hundred and seventy-four. At the second stated annual meetitig- in each year, beginning with the year eighteen hundred and seventy-four, three trustees shall be elected by the board, who shall hold office until the second stated meeting in the fifth year from their election, until their successors are elected and have accepted. All elections of trustees shall be by ballot, " The alumni of the college may, in each year, elect one person from their own number, who shall be qualified to vote at such elec- tion, to the office of trustee. All aUimni of five years standing, who have received in course the degi-ee of bachelor of science, and all alumni who have received in coui'se the degree t)f master of arts, may have a vote at such election, but in (ither respects the trustees may, by by-law, regulate, from time to time, the mode in which such elec tion shall be made and authenticated to them. No election shall be made, except at a meeting at which at least thirty qualified voters shall be present, and if such a number be not present, the election shall lapse to the trustees ; but it shall be the privilege of the alumni, in such case, to nominate three of their number, from whom the trus- tees shall make their choice for the vacancy, provided that at least twenty qualified voters of the alumni are present to make such nomi- nation. If less than twenty alumni be present, the trustees may fill the vacancy by electing any alumnus of th^ college, rfuch trustee shall hold office until the second stated meeting in the fifth year from his election, and until his successor is elected and accepts. " Whenever any vacancy, by death, removal out of* the State, or otherwise, shall occur in the board, the trustees shall have the ])ower to fill such vacancy, and the person who may be elected to fill such vacancy shall hold office for the unexpired term of the trustee in whose place he was elected. The trustees shall have power to make and declare vacant the seat of any trustee vvho shall absent himself from five successive meetinsrs of the board." Hobart College. BY-LAWS, KEGULATING THE ELECTION OF TKUSTEES. Adopted at a Meeting of the Board of Trustees Held March 3, 1874. S.'s entitled to vote shall be made and certified by the Kegistrar of the College before June 1st in each year, and sent to the Secretaiv- III. The outgoing Irustee, in ])la('e of whom one is to be elected by the Alunini, shall be selected by lot in each year until 1879. The election by the Alumni shall take ])lace on the Wednesday before C\)mmencement in each year, in the Philosophical Room. The polls shall be opened at four o'clock iv m., and remain open until five o'clock. A majority of the votes cast shall be necessary to the elec- tion of a Trustee. Vs. One inspector of the said election shall be chosen by the Trustees and one by the Alumni, "^fhey shall be furnished by the Secretary with a ballot bo.\ and the certified list of voters. They shall report on the same day the numl)ei" of voters and the number of votes given to e.ach candidate, such repoit . The i^lace and date of death of those deceased. Occupations other than professional are not indicated except for special reasons. The Degree of B. A. is omitted whenever that of M. A. has been taken. The title C. E. is an abbreviation for Civil Engineer. Alumni engaged in instruction, when not otherwise desig- nated, are marked, Instr. Professional titles are j)laced in a ijarenthesis to indi- cate that the persons thus designated either never entered ujjou the practice of their jjrofession, or are known to have retired from it. Students of Theology, Law, and Medicine are resi^ectively indicated : [Theol.] ; [Law] ; [Med.]. Mili- tary titles are not given except iu the case of deceased Alumni, and of those in service at the i^resent time. Seigmund, M. A., Prof. Latin Language and Literature. Hobart College. 29 HOUSE OF CONVOCATION. STATUTES OF ORGANIZATION* ADOPTED BY THE TRUSTEES OF GENEVA COLLEGE, At a Meeting held August 1, 1848. Whereas, in the opinion of this Board the prosperity of Geneva College would be promoted by the adoption of such measures as are calculated to secure the active co-ojieration of its graduated .members in its behalf — it is therefore, in order to secure such co-operation, enacted as follows : Section 1. The Alumni of Geneva College are hereby constituted and declared to be a House of Convocation, with power to make by-laws and choose officers for their own government ; and according to said laws, to assemble from time to time, to consult and advise for the interests and benefit of the College, and to exercise such other powers and privileges as may be conceded to them by this corporation. Sec. 2. All persons who have received honorary or ad eundem degrees at this College ; all who are, or have been, members of the Faculty of the College, and all Alumni of other Colleges who have received degrees in course at this College, are declared to be eligible to the House of Convocation, by a vote of the members thereof at any regular meeting. '• Sec ■'.. The officers of the House of Convocation shall consist of a Presid- ing officer, to be styled the Dean ; of a Secretary, a Treasurer, and an Executive Committee. Sec. 4. It shall be the duty of the House of Convocation to meet regularly at the College on the day preceding the Commencement of the College, in each year. It shall also hold such special meetings as may, from time to time, be appointed by the Executive Committee of the Convocation. Sec. T). The House of Convocation at each annual meeting thereof, shall, either directly or by its Executive Committee, appoint one of its members as Orator, to address the Convocation next succeeding such appointment. It shall also appoint annually, at a regular meeting, a committee from its own body, of such members as may by the Convocation be deemed proper, to be styled a Board of Examiners, whose duty it shall be : 1st, to attend the regular examina- tions of the College classes, when required ; and 2nd, to report concerning such examinations to the Trustees of the College, and such report to embody such suggestions as to the Board of Examiners may seem necessary for the improve- ment of the instruction or discipline of the College : such report before being presented to the Trustees, to be submitted to a joint meeting of the Faculty of the College and the Boardof Examiners, at which joint meeting the President shall preside. .Sd, The members of the Board of Examiners shall have power individually to examine and decide upon the qualifications of apphcants for *A8 a matter of historic interest, the Statutes of Organization and By-Laws of tlie House of Convocation are iriveif b ilow. Both the Statutes and By-Laws are printed with all Amendments, subsequently made, incorporated . 30 Associate A.liinini, admission to the lirst term of the Freshmau class in the College ; and the certificate, in due form, after such examination, of a member of the Board of Examiners, that such applicant is qualified, shall be prima facie evidence of qualification, and entitis such applicant to admission to the Freshman class, on his complying in other respacts with tha existing rules and by-laws governing the admission of students to the College. Sec. (>. In addition to such other powers as are hereby conferred upon the Hoiise of Convocation, it shall have power to endow and institute Professor- ships, Fellowships, and Scholarships, and to make arrangements for enlarging the Library, Apparatus, and Cabinets of the College, to the use of which it shall be entitled upon the authority of the Board of Trustees. It shall also have power to recommend, from time to time, to the Board of Trustees, through the committee on Honors appointed from the Trustees, candidates for the several houoi-ary or other degrees. Sec. 7. For the exercise of the foregoing and such other powers as may be gi-anted hereafter, this statute shall be to the members of the House of Convocation herein specified, their sufficient constitution. July, 14th, 1852, the Trustees Rettolved, That the House of Convocation, at any of its meetings, shaU have the power to exclude, by ballot, from its meetings and all participation thereim, any member who may have made himself obnoxious by notorious crime, immorality, or the inculcation of Infidel or Atheistical opinions ; such exclusion to have effect until the matter can be brought before the Trustees of the College in due form of presentment, for their action thereon. BY-LAAVS OF THE HOUSE OF CONVOCATION. Adopted August 14, 1849. ARTICLE I. Of the Time of Meeting, and Order of Business. Section 1. The meeting of the House shall be held the day before the College Cominencement in each year Sec. 2. The order of business at each regular meetiuf^ shall be as follows : 1. The Secretary shall ascertain the names of the Members present, by calling the Roll, or otherwise. 2. Reading of the Mtnutas of the last meeting^ 3. The Treasurer's Report, which is to be referred to a'l Auditing Com- mittee, consisting of two members, to b3 apjDointed by the Dean. 4. The list of Officers, Execiitive Committee, and Standing Committees, shall be printed in Tabular form, and prefixed to the jirinted proceedings of the House for each yeai;. Sec. "). In case any officer is al^sent from any meeting, his place shall be filled, fro tetiipore, by the House, on the nomination of any member. ARTICLE II. Of Elections. Section 1. The officers named in the Statutes, and an Orator and Sub- stitute, shall be elected on the day of Commencement in every year, at 9 A. M., by ballot, unless dispensed with by the unanimous vote of the House of Convocation. Sec. 2. A phu-ality of the votes given shall elect the officers for whom such votes shall be given respectively. ARTICLE III. * Of Officers and their Duties and Powers. Section 1. The Executive Committee shall consist of seven members, of whom the President of the College, the Dean and Secretary of the House shall be inembers. The Dean shall be Chairman of the Committee. Sec. 2. The Executive Committee shall, through its chairman, report at each meeting, and shall make such suggestions and recommenciations as they shall deem approjiriate. Sec. o. The Examiners shall be appointed by the Executive Committee, and the number of Examiners shall be determined by the committee. Sec. 4. It shall he the duty of the Dean and the Secretary, as soon as may be conveniently done after each meeting of the House of Convocation, to prepare and puljlish in the Gos2>el Messenger, and in such other papers as they may think advisable, a report of the doings of the House, in such "form and to siich length as to them shall seem most conducive to the interests of the House, and the College with which it is connected. It shall be the duty of the Secretary and the Treasurer, to issue once in three years, and as soon as may be convenient after the Annual Meeting of the House, on each Triennial year, a a correct Catalogue of all persons who have taken degrees in the College with which the House is connected, whether in Course, Honorary or Ad Eundem, together with their titles and honors, etc., so far as they can be ascertained, in the us- ual manner of Trienniiil Catalogues, together with the Statutes, By-Laws and Rules of Order of the House, a list of its officers and of all who now are or have heretofore been officers, either in the Faculty or Board of Trustees, indicating the names of those who have dei^arted this life, with the usual sign of a star before them. Sec. <;. The Executive Committee are hereby invested with such powers as are conferred by the Statutes, and are not otherwise confen-ed by the By-Laws. Sec. 7. The annual Oration shall be delivered at such time and place as the Executive Committee shall determine. Sec. 8. Each membej- of tlu; House of Convocation shall pay into the Treasury the sum of fifty cents, to defray the contingent expenses of the House of Convocation. <^ NOTICE. Alumni will confer a veiy great favor by forwarding, for deposit in the Library of the College, copies of any books, pamphlets, or addresses, of their own produc- tion, that are in print. This Catalogue has been prepared under the supervision of the Secretary and the Treasurer of the Associate Alumni, who were appointed a committee for that purpose at the Annual Meeting held in 1874.
